4. DIESEL- ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE
 This diesel-electric locomotive hauls a
passenger train. Diesel engines spin
generators that produce electricity to power
the locomotive. They are more efficient than
steam locomotives and do not require the
overhead power lines needed for electric
engines.

The French high-speed train

8. GERMAN INTERCITY EXPRESS [ICE]

 Magnetic Levitation Train
 Magnetic levitation (maglev) trains float a
short distance above the track. These trains,
such as the experimental one shown here,
can travel as fast as 270 miles per hour (435
kilometers per hour).
