During the 1830’s and 1840’s, Independence, Missouri was the
place where many emigrants bought their supplies, prepared
wagons, and left with a wagon train west.
Fort Kearny was constructed as a supply post. Emigrants along
the trails westward stopped here to collect food, goods, and use
mail service and other amenities.
Back to Map
Fort Laramie was constructed as a trading post. Taken over by the
U.S. Army in the mid 1940’s to protect travelers on the trails west.
Back to Map
Fort Hall was constructed by mountain men preparing for a
rendezvous. Upon leaving, emigrants chose one of two trails,
Oregon and California.

For those traveling the Oregon Trail, Oregon City was the last
destination. Emigrants would file land claims here at the capital of
the Oregon Territory.

the way.
