About the Author
Growing up in Inwood, Nicole A. Schmidt graduated
from Lawrence High School in 2004. She moved to
Maryland to attend the University of Maryland-College
Park. She received a Bachelor’s in English and years later
a Master’s in Education.
Schmidt (Schmidtty to her mentees) taught high school
English seven years. Last semester she was a part-time
professor at a local college. She has always seen
teaching as more than a job, more than a career; she
views teaching as a divine calling. With that in mind, she
became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
whose core mission is to empower the community
through education.
Her passion for education and travel has taken her
South America, Europe and in a week, to Asia where she
will spend a year teaching English.
About the Book
It took over 10 years for Inside a Young Soul
to be published. Every poem was penned
when Schmidt was 14-19 years old.
When the poems were penned, they served
As an outlet, a way to cope and vent with life.
The book was published to comfort today’s
teens as they go through adolescence and
encourage them to pursue their own dreams.

The focus of this poem are those adjectives that I felt described my
best
• Scan your copy of the poem to identify the descriptions I chose

Your Turn
Identify and list three or four adjectives
that describe you.
Inside a Young Soul
Each stanza first addresses how that adjective is viewed by others.
Then a response about how its viewed by self is provided.
Your Turn
• For the first adjective about yourself, write a line or two about how
it is viewed by others.
• For the first adjective about yourself, write a line or two about how
you viewed it.
