Editor's Notes
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Symmetrix VMAX continues the tradition of industry leading technology Symmetrix is known for. The Symmetrix VMAX provides true scale-up and scale-out by leveraging a multi-controller Intel multi-core processor-based architecture with shared global memory. And with the industry’s broadest and deepest set of connectivity options, including FICON, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, IP, and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), you can start small with a single-engine Symmetrix VMAX SE and grow to an eight-engine Symmetrix VMAX as business and IT requirements dictate.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Let’s take a look at how VMAX Engines can be scaled as the performance requirements increase in the virtual data center. This slide takes a look at the Virtual Matrix architecture in more detail. The system starts with a Symmetrix VMAX Engine as a high-availability base configuration.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. The VMAX Engine is connected to the Virtual Matrix and allows all system resources—including CPU, memory, drives, and host channels—to be dynamically accessed and shared by any application. Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Additional VMAX Engines are added nondisruptively to efficiently scale system resources. The Virtual Matrix will support a total of eight VMAX Engines in a single system.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Whether your environment is open systems, mainframe, and/or virtualized, EMC has by far the best security features in the industry. You can sleep at night, knowing that your information is safe and secure. For secure audit, EMC has tamper-proof logs and RSA enVision integration. For secure access, EMC has two-factor authentication and access controls. For secure data, EMC has data and flight protection for replicated links with IPsec, as well as encryption and key management integration for data-at-rest encryption.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. The ability to simplify storage management is a key user requirement, and Symmetrix VMAX provides significant advantages over other high-end storage systems. Key Symmetrix VMAX capabilities include Virtual Provisioning to simplify provisioning and improve efficiencies through features such as Zero Space Reclaim and the ability to automatically grow, shrink, and balance pools. In addition, Auto-Provisioning Groups has the ability to simplifystorage mapping and masking to significantly reduce administration time for configuration setups, changes, and additions. Enginuity 5875 supports Dynamic Back Endto eliminate locks for nondisruptive configuration additions and changes. Dynamic Back End allows administrators to manage and allocate storage without disruption as configuration changes are being performed.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Over the past two to three years, EMC has had 30 PhDs in its engineering department work with hundreds of customers and has analyzed thousands of applications' access patterns to information. EMC has collected over 2 PB of information and analyzed more than 80 billion I/O transactions of information. And a result, EMC discovered two 80/20 rules. The first 80/20 rule is that 20 percent of the volumes of an infrastructure are hot, and the other 80 percent are not. And the second 80/20 rule is that when you look inside a volume, 20 percent of the datasets inside the volume are hot, and the other 80 percent are not.So if you do the math and multiply 20 percent by 20 percent, you actually find that 4 percent of the volumes of your information infrastructure are active, and the other 96 percent are not. This means that an important design aspect in the building of FAST technology is that smaller is better. In this case, the smaller the granularity of data movement, the better the overall solution is for performance and cost.
Let’s walk through, at a very high level, how EMC implemented FAST.EMC’s FAST technology is architected around three engines: The first is a statistics engine, which gathers statistics about how your applications are accessing information. Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. The second engine is the analytics engine. The statistics are fed into the analytics engine, and it analyzes which datasets are hot and cold, and how that rate of change is occurring. So, how hot they're getting, or how cold they're getting.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. The third engine is the movement engine. Recommendations from the analytics engine are fed into a data movement engine, which will actually provide the recommendations of which datasets to promote to the better performing storage, like enterprise Flash technology, and which datasets should be demoted to the more cost-efficient, energy-efficient, and space-efficient storage like SATA.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Then the cycle repeats as it continues to optimize your information even while you’re at your desk checking email, sleeping, and on vacation.
The second feature provided in the FAST Suite, which is highly complementary to FAST Cache is FAST for Virtual Pools. The combination of FAST Cache and FAST VP addresses the perennial storage management problem: the cost of optimizing the storage system. In many cases prior to FAST and FAST Cache, it was simply too resource intensive to perform manual optimization and many customers simply overprovisioned storage to ensure the performance requirements of a data set were met. With the arrival of Flash drives and the FAST Suite, we have a better way to achieve this fine cost/performance balance:The classic approach to storage provisioning can be repetitive and time-consuming and often produces uncertain results. It is not always obvious how to match capacity to the performance requirements of a workload’s data. Even when a match is achieved, requirements change, and a storage system’s provisioning may require constant adjustment. Storage tiering is one solution. Storage tiering puts several different types of storage devices into an automatically managed storage pool. LUNs use the storage capacity they need from the pool, on the devices with the performance they need. Fully Automated Storage Tiering for Virtual Pools (FAST VP) is the EMC® VNX® feature that allows a single LUN to leverage the advantages of Flash, SAS, and Near-line SAS drives through the use of pools. FAST solves theses issues by providing automated sub-LUN-level tiering. FAST collects I/O activity statistics at the 1 GB granularity level (known as a slice). The relative activity level of each slice is used to determine which slices should be promoted to higher tiers of storage. Relocation is initiated at the user’s discretion through either manual initiation or an automated scheduler. Through the frequent relocation of 1 GB slices, FAST continuously adjusts to the dynamic nature of modern storage environments. This removes the need for manual, resource-intensive LUN Migrations while still providing the performance levels required by the most active dataset, thereby optimizing for cost and performance simultaneously.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. EMC Tier Advisor is a tool that helps companies determine the most optimal FAST VP configuration. Using Tier Advisor and the current performance data, EMC can perform the “what-if” analysis and show companies the benefits of tiering and FAST VP in their environments. Tier Advisor is an Excel-based tool that will take in as input existing performance information from a Symmetrix environment (Symmetrix trends of performance) and will present the level of workload skew in their environments. The workload skew determines the FAST VP policy.Using the performance analysis summarized by Tier Advisor, “What-if” analysis can be done to see the performance, TCO, power, and footprint benefits of introducing tiering (Flash drives, Fibre Channel, SAS, and SATA) and FAST VP into an existing environment. Tier Advisor uses the characteristics of FAST VP to perform the “What-If” analysis as follows: Workload skew in current environment to determine the optimal FAST policy 8 MB data movement between the tiers makes the best use of Flash drive capacityThe ability for FAST VP continuously monitor environments means that it can react to immediate changes in workload performance.
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation. Here’s an example of what that means to you. Compared to single-tier systems, FAST VP delivers up to 40 percent more application performance at a 40 percent lower cost while requiring 87 percent fewer disks 65 percent less footprint, and 75 percent less power. In addition to the cost savings, FAST greatly simplifies management by allowing you to create tiering policies and allowing the Symmetrix VMAX to optimize the data placement across storage tiers with no additional storage administration. Not only does smart storage make life easier for IT organizations, it actually makes life better for everyone by being more “green.” Power, cooling, and footprint continue to be a major data center concern. The energy efficiencies of Symmetrix VMAX combined with features like FAST will enable you to reduce power consumption in 2011 by over 270 million kilowatt hours—enough to power 24,400 homes.
Symmetrix VMAX is the best storage for virtual server environments, either VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V, bringing both smart and powerful functionality to these environments. With EMC Virtual Storage Integrator, storage administrators can give virtual server administrators access to storage resources to provision capacity. This allows storage administrators to easily leverage the advanced efficiency, scalability, and security capabilities of Symmetrix VMAX for virtual servers. The key to Virtual Storage Integrator is that the storage administrator continues to maintain control of the infrastructure, and can effectively manage virtual server storage in combination with other applications sharing the same storage array.Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. EMC ProSphere also provides end-to-end visibility of the virtual environment and automated management for mixed storage environments with the following functionality: End-to-end visibility and control for a single management screenDiscover, visualize, and manage storage-to-virtual machine relationships Simplify the ability to monitor, provision, and report on virtual serversNote to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation. Enginuity 5875 added integration with VMware vSphere 4.1 with support for vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAI), making Symmetrix VMAX the only high-end platform available that is fully integrated with VMware. VAAI includes a set of key APIs that intelligently off-load storage functions to Symmetrix VMAX to increase scalability by enabling 10-times less I/O for formatting commands, with 10-times more virtual machines per data storage, and 10-times faster replication of virtual machines to create snapshots and clones that can be used to speed deployments. Enginuity 5875 Q3 2011 SR with EMC SMI-S Provider 4.3.1 added support for VMware vSphere Storage APIs for Storage Awareness (VASA). VASA provides built-in storage insight in VMware vCenter Server to support intelligent VM storage provisioning, bolster storage troubleshooting, and enable new VMware Distributed Resource Scheduler-related use cases for storage.

Symmetrix has a solid history of supporting mission-critical applications in Tier 1 environments across mainframes, open systems, and files when deployed with NAS gateways. As companies move to the cloud now (Note to Presenter: Click now in Slide Show mode for animation.) Symmetrix VMAX with Enginuity 5875 is uniquely positioned to continue this support AND help enable you to virtualize those Tier 1 applications with confidence. With this launch, EMC is bringing these same capabilities to newer cloud-based environments with support for virtual machines, virtual desktops, and even object data with EMC Atmos. As you look to virtualize your Tier 1 applications, doing so with Symmetrix VMAX means you will leverage EMC’s proven legacy in the most demanding computing environments, and be able to apply that as you deploy more virtualization throughout your infrastructure.
VPLEX Local is designed for use in a single data center, while VPLEX Metro allows you to connect two VPLEX clusters together within synchronous distances and move or share data between them.A common use case for VPLEX Local includes nondisruptive data mobility between EMC and non-EMC platforms. It allows users to implement VPLEX Local to federate storage arrays and simplify and speed data movement between them. VPLEX Local also provides a way to increase high availability and local storage resiliency for arrays in a single site. VPLEX allows storage to be mirrored across mixed platforms without requiring host resources. Leveraging this capability can increase protection and high availability for critical applications while leveraging a user’s existing storage resources. VPLEX Local can also be used to simplify management of multi-array storage environments, with tools to provision and allocate virtualized storage devices to standardized LUN presentation and management.VPLEX Metro allows users to move applications over distance and, in combination with server virtualization, enables users to transparently move and relocate virtual machines and their corresponding applications and data over distance. This unique capability allows users to relocate, share, and balance infrastructure resources between data centers. VPLEX Metro also delivers increased high availability and resiliency by allowing users to mirror volumes within and across locations. This provides non-stop application availability in the event of a component failure. VPLEX Metro also allows data to be distributed, shared, and collaborated on across sites. A single copy of data can be accessed by multiple users across twolocations. This allows instant access to information in real time, and eliminates the operational overhead and time required to copy and distribute data across locations. Finally, VPLEX is now able to offer customer support over asynchronous distances with VPLEX Geo. With VPLEX Geo, you can take advantage of AccessAnywhere capabilities between two sites, even if those sites are more than 100 km apart. As we have discussed, VPLEX Geo brings new innovations to the VPLEX family with all of its capabilities, including application and data mobility, high availability, and distributed data collaboration over extended distances. In June 2011, EMC will also release new VPLEX system hardware—VS2. VS1 will be available until the end of 2011. We will cover the new hardware features later in the presentation.
The main use case for VPLEX is seamless Application mobility which allows users to balance and relocate workloads between arrays within and between data centers.
Increase protection and reduce unplanned application outages by creating a HA infrastructure with VPLEX.
VPLEX is the only product that allows users to create an Active/Active configuration between two data centers. This increases resource utilization and reduces RTO to zero.
A VPLEX Local customer featured in our launch was AOL. They have a six petabyte infrastructure with more than 160 arrays, all on rolling leases, so they were effectively doing an array migration every week. With VPLEX they were able to significantly reduce their migration time from seven months to two weeks, saving millions in productivity and lease costs. They are also able to manage all their storage as a virtual pool, so when an application team requests new disk, they don’t have to investigate which individual arrays have the proper tier and capacity available. They can aggregate and manage multiple arrays using VPLEX, and their turnaround time to fulfill provisioning requests has been reduced from over two hours down to 10 minutes.
Another customer that we featured in our launch was Melbourne IT, the largest hosting company in Australia, and their use of VPLEX Metro. Melbourne IT has several data centers and facilities all over Australia, which sometimes encounter very real dangers to them, such as flash brush fires. When a data center is in harm’s way, they can use VPLEX Metro to relocate their infrastructure to another location a safe distance away. VPLEX Metro gives them significant flexibility and time saved in moving virtual machines, and allows them to continue servicing users and applications from a remote site while maintenance is done locally, or vice versa.
