Fusion Cloud Data Centers: a new high tech frontierfestival ICT 2016

Communication Patterns Using Data-Centric Publish/SubscribeSumant Tambe
Fundamental to any distributed system are communication patterns: point-to-point, request-reply, transactional queues, and publish-subscribe. Large distributed systems often employ two or more communication patterns. Using a single middleware that supports multiple communication patterns is a very cost-effective way of developing and maintaining large distributed systems. This talk will begin with an introduction of Data Distribution Service (DDS) – an OMG standard – that supports data-centric publish-subscribe communication for real-time distributed systems. DDS separates state management and distribution from application logic and supports discoverable data models. The talk will then describe how RTI Connext Messaging goes beyond vanilla DDS and implements various communication patterns including request-reply, command-response, and guaranteed delivery. You will also learn how these patterns can be combined to create interesting variations when the underlying substrate is as powerful as DDS. We’ll also discuss APIs for creating high-performance applications using the request-reply communication pattern.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN): Unleashing the Power of the NetworkRobert Keahey
It goes without saying that cloud computing has dramatically reshaped the information technology services landscape. Virtualization is unleashing the power of commodity-based technology and open source communities are building new applications and services at an astonishing rate, but networking has lagged behind compute and storage in virtualization and automation. We’ve become accustomed to specialized networking silicon, complex operating systems and highly distributed control planes. For the most part, we’ve accepted the model along with its high costs.
All that is changing! New protocols such as OpenFlow are freeing the network control plane from proprietary operating systems and hardware platforms. We are entering a new era where customers control the features – and release schedules – of new, open networking applications that address the needs of the mega-scale world.
A lot of work is required to realize the potential of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), where we can enjoy the benefits derived from “software automating software.” This talk will examine some of the history that led us to the point where current networking architectures are no longer viable for cloud computing at mega-scale. We’ll take a look at the basics of SDN and some of its key elements – OpenFlow, network virtualization, and orchestration – along with some of the initiatives and companies that are setting the stage for the next generation of networking.
The document discusses the issue of limited mobile wireless network capacity as demand for data continues to grow exponentially due to increasing use of smartphones, tablets, and cloud-based applications. It notes that wireless network capacity is inherently constrained compared to wired networks. While network upgrades can help alleviate capacity issues temporarily, fundamental business model changes are needed to manage unprofitable network usage and capture more revenue from high-volume data users. Specific technology providers like Broadcom and network upgrade strategies are mentioned as potential ways to address network capacity challenges.
The definitive guide for evaluating enterprise WLAN networksAerohive Networks
This document provides an overview and analysis of enterprise wireless local area network (WLAN) architectures. It discusses the evolution of WLANs from early convenience networks to modern high-speed networks supporting mission-critical applications. It analyzes centralized and distributed control architectures and concludes that a distributed control and forwarding model is best suited for today's high-speed, mobile, and scalable network needs. The document also discusses key considerations for evaluating WLAN vendors and architectures, such as supporting BYOD, high-speed 802.11ac networks, cost predictability, and future scalability.
The document discusses challenges and perspectives for developing the next generation internet by integrating networking, data management, and computing. It notes that data traffic is growing exponentially and will be dominated by video. Edge computing and its relationship to cloud computing are discussed as potential new choke points. The "data flood" from IoT devices and how to handle raw versus processed data is also examined. Finally, it explores how user, environmental, and content data flows are aggregated and used for profiling identities and behaviors.

The document discusses seven trends in data storage and networking for 2020. It predicts that NVMe will be widely adopted for performance-intensive workloads. It also notes that networking is taking on more aspects of storage, such as caching data. Growing data from IoT and AI is increasing demand for cost-effective long-term storage solutions like tape archives. Cloud strategies are also shifting to be more proactive in optimizing costs.
The document discusses how exponential data growth is straining centralized cloud infrastructure and driving up costs due to lack of economies of scale. It argues that a more distributed and decentralized approach is needed to better manage and leverage the vast amount of unused capacity at the edge. This includes distributing data across devices, networks, and data centers instead of concentrating it within massive centralized data centers. A hybrid model is proposed that keeps some functions like policy centralized while pushing processing and storage out closer to where the data is created and used.

Ultra-high bandwidth via Colt TechnologyLemar Amany
Ultra-high bandwidth connectivity is increasingly important as data consumption grows exponentially due to factors like remote work, cloud applications, and video streaming. This growth is straining existing networks and requiring new hybrid solutions that combine private networks with public cloud connectivity. Specialized terrestrial networks are also needed to connect submarine cables to inland data centers and allow content to reach end users globally. Forward-thinking companies are addressing these challenges through software-defined networks and virtualization to enable flexible, on-demand bandwidth provisioning.
Managing Data Offloading Securely Over WLan Access Networks With I-WLanGreen Packet
Cellular operators are increasingly shifting their focus for alternative wireless access methods to manage data offload. Legacy cellular networks were designed for low bandwidth consumption and insufficient to cope with the growth of data requirements today. Although operators continuously upgrade their networks with greater capacity and advanced technologies, heavy investments for cell build is not an economical approach in the longer term.
The availability of Wi-Fi hotspots are highly accessible and appropriate for data offloading. Taking advantage of the unlicensed spectrum and better bandwidth utilization, data offloading can be achieved with lower cost per bit. In this paper, we present I-WLAN to effectively manage data offloading securely between 3GPP and non-3GPP networks. We will also be exploring the different network use scenarios of I-WLAN in enabling simple unified EAP authentication and subscriber policies.

Using Network Recording and Search to Improve IT Service DeliveryEmulex Corporation
For organizations that depend critically on their network to provide services to both internal and external customers, understanding why quality of service issues occur is critical. An emerging tool in Network Performance Management and Diagnostics (NPMD) is network recording and search, which allows network operations (NetOps) staff to identify issues in service and application delivery.
Finding the right data (whether packets, netflows, or otherwise) to understand why your application is underperforming is often like finding a needle in a haystack. In most cases, you have to find exactly the right set of packets to understand why you have a service performance issue or a service failure. As organizations move from 1Gb Ethernet to 10Gb Ethernet to 40/100Gb Ethernet (1GbE, 10GbE, 40/100GbE), the “amount of hay” is increasing by orders of magnitude. However, most network recording and search devices on the market today cannot keep up with data rates beyond a few gigabits per second, and have to “sample” the network traffic. In this context, selecting the right network recording and search device means the difference between understanding and resolving your problem quickly, and spending days or weeks trying to randomly capture the right packets.
In this webinar, we’ll explore the different options that organizations have for recording and mining network traffic to identify and resolve ITSM issues. We'll explore what matters most when your applications fail, and share some best-practice insights gleaned from working with customers that run some of the largest and most critical data networks on the planet.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
