The Tower Bridge in London spans the River Thames and was completed in 1894. It uses hydraulic mechanisms powered originally by steam and now by electricity and oil to raise two sections of the roadway on each side, allowing ships to pass through. When built, it was the largest and most sophisticated bascule bridge ever completed, constructed out of over 31 million bricks, 14,000 tons of iron and steel, and other materials. The bridge was designed by architect Horace Jones to prevent blocking further river access while allowing ships to pass through.
