This document analyzes 6 photographs commissioned by Topshop for advertising purposes. Each photo features 1-2 images of a model posing with Topshop products. The analysis examines technical aspects like camera positioning, shutter speed, depth of field, and editing techniques. Strengths included natural poses, matching outfits to backgrounds, and varied distances between shots. Weaknesses were less distinct poses, similar outfits, and small text. The photos provide inspiration for using blurred backgrounds, matching styles to scenes, and natural posing.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

Theme or focus of images
1// This 1st image is for high street brand Topshop, with Kate Moss as their model for it. The image features
two pictures of Kate Moss, the first one looking and facing the right whilst swinging her dress, and the second
facing the left with her hands in her playsuit pockets. The colours in this image are quite bright and vibrant
with editing done to make her shadow blur in vibrant pink/purple gradient. I think these images were taken
at eye-level as they cut of on her thighs, also I think the images were taken at a distance because they are
portrait type shots. I don’t think the image was zoomed in atall.
2// This 2nd image is again for Topshop, but this time an unknown model. This image again features two
images put together, both of the same model but wearing different outfits and posing differently on both
pictures. The background is a floral pattern that is similar to the pattern on the models outfits. I think these
images were take a level lower than eye-level due to the models head being rather very high on the image
and it looking like a portrait. If the image was zoomed in, we wouldn’t see the clothing matching the
background, and if it was too zoomed out, we wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the clothing
and the background.
3. 3// This 3rd image is again for Topshop, with an unknown model posing with their products. This image
features two images put together as one. The first image is of a model posing casually in jeans and a crop
top over laying a pale blue background, and the one next to it has the same model in different clothing to
be edited black and white with the camera a little bit more closer to her. I think these images were taken at
eye level as the model appears to be looking straight ahead whilst she is stood up. I don’t think any zoom
was used for the first image, but the second image may have been zoomed in a little.
4// This 4th image is again for Topshop, with an unknown model posing with their products. This image
features two images put together as one. The left side has the model dressed casually and edited in black
and white, while the right one has the same model dressed more smartly and is in colour. I think these images
were taken at eye level as the model is stood up and looking directly ahead. I think the first image has zoom
on has it cuts off just before her knees, but I don’t think the second image does as it cuts of lower at her
calves.
5// This 5th image is again for Topshop, with an unknown model posing with their products. This image
features two images put together as one. These two images are vary similar to each other, both have a
models face taking up the frame room, with a hand supporting their head, and both have similar
watercolour editing over the top of them. I think these images were taken at a level just higher than eye level
as the models appear to be slightly looking up. I think both these images have zoom on them to get that
close to the models faces.
6// This 6th image is again for Topshop, with an unknown model posing with their products. This image
features two images put together as one. The first image is edited in black and white and appears to have a
zoom on it because it cuts of at her knees. The second image is also edited to be black and white, but is a
longer body shot as it appears to cut of at her calves. I think these images were taken at eye-level as no
slouching or sitting down is used and the models look relaxed stood up.
Composition
1// I think the photographer for this 1st image has stood a fair distance away from the model because it is
nearly a full body portrait. If we zoomed in a bit, we wouldn’t see the clothes properly, which is the main
focus of the image. If we zoomed out a little, we might not be able to see the detailing on the clothing. If this
image was black and white, we wouldn’t get the same effect as the colour one because the main focus is
the clothing since its for Topshop.
2// I think the photographer for this 2nd image has stood a distance away from the model because its nearly
a full body portrait, which is Topshop’s style. If we were zoomed in we wouldn’t get to see the full outfit, as if
we were zoomed in, we would get confused with where the clothing ends and the background starts. If this
image was black and white, the same patterned clothing and background would just merge together.
3// I think the photographer for this 3rd image has stood a far distance with the first image as it is almost a full
body shot of the model, but with the second image, he has less distance or more zoom. If we zoomed in on
the first image, we would see only more of the models face as her clothing Is quite ligh and matches the
background.
4// I think the photographer for this 4th image has stood a close distance for both these images as they both
cut off before the leg ends. If we zoomed in on both these images, we would end up looking at more of the
models face in greater detail.
5// I think the photographer for this 5th image has stood a very close distance as they are portraits of face
shots, which would require a lot of zoom otherwise. If we zoomed in on both these images, we would only
end up with the models face’s. if we zoomed out, we could be able to see more of what theyr outfit would
be like etc..
6// I think the photographer for this 6th image has stood a close distance for the first image, but the second
one a bit further back but still close. If we zoomed in on the first image, we would see more of the models
face as it is already zoomed in quite a bit. If we zoomed in on the second image we would probably end up
with one similar to this first image.
Techniques used
1// With this 1st image, I think the shutter speed would have been a normal exposure since there is no lighter
or darker areas, everything is edited to the colours they are now. With the depth of field, in the background,
there is only a gradient background of yellow to blue which is clearly edited. In the foreground, there is the
model wearing the clothes with an edited blur behind her in pinky/purple colours. If we apply the 3 X 3 grid
on top of the two images separately, the model is in the middle of both centre squares, making her the main
4. focus.
2// This 2nd image, the shutter speed was a quick one with the colours on the clothing being bright, so too
much exposure, the colours would merge. With depth of field, the background colour is the same at the
foreground pieces so they mirror each other. If we apply a 3 X 3 grid on top of these images separately, the
model is always the centre focus point of there images from Topshop.
3// This 3rd image, the shutter speed would of consisted of a short exposure as the image looks as if there’s
already a lot of lighting on it. With the depth of field, the background is a plain bluey/white colour, quite
simple, the foreground has the model on and she is dressed in similar shades to the background but stands
out because she is focused as the background is a slight gradient. If we apple a 3 X 3 grid on top of these
images, in the centre squares would be the models as they are positioned right in the middle, therefore
making them centre point.
4// This 4th image, the shutter speed would’ve been a longer exposure as the model has dark features and is
wearing slightly dark clothing. With the depth of field, the background is a dark shade of grey, with the
foreground having the model in focus, but also wearing dark clothing. If we apple a 3 X 3 grid on top of
these images, in the centre squares would be the models as the model in black and white is the main focus
as she is the only thing on that side due to no background, and the other side due to being the only little bit
of colour on there.
5// This 5th image, the shutter speed was quite a quick exposure as the models appear to have light hair
and very fair skin, which would be blurred out easily with over exposure, but with editing they look lighter.
With the depth of field, the background doesn’t seem to be there, the model’s faces take up the entire
frame, in the foreground is the model’s faces who are in focus with editing over their faces to complete the
theme of the shoot. If we apple a 3 X 3 grid on top of these images, in the centre squares would be the
model’s faces as both of them take up the entire frame.
6// This 6th image, the shutter speed is quite difficult to say as they have been edited to be in black and
white, but I’m guessing they were shot with a normal standard shutter speed. With the depth of field, the
background is just plain white, with the models in the foreground, they are the main focus with them being
the only items on the page. If we apple a 3 X 3 grid on top of these images, in the centre squares would be
overlapping the models as they are the only features on the page.
Strengths & Weaknesses
1// With the 1st image, two strengths would be the coloured blur behind the model which makes her stand
out, and the way she is posing, it looks natural. Two weakness’ would include not having a simple plain
background and two images not being separate as I think they are both strong photos individually. I would
use these images as inspiration to my own by using the coloured blur.
2// With the 2nd image, two strengths would be the floral background and the very similar clothing matching
to the background. Two weakness’ would include the posing could look a bit more fun rather than standing
still, and the boarder not touching the models head. I would use this image as inspiration for my own work by
matching similar outfits to backgrounds.
3// With the 3rd image, two strengths would be the simplicity of the photos, and different distances between
each shot. Two weakness’ would include the text could be a bit more bolder, and the outfits could be a bit
more different as at first glance, they look similar. I would use this image as inspiration for my own work by the
two different length of shots.
4// With the 4th image, two strengths would be the different editing, one being black and white, the other
colour. Two weakness’ would include the text being bolder or places somewhere else, and the ripped
boarder. I would use this image as inspiration for my own work by the editing techniques.
5// With the 5th image, two strengths would be the water colour effect on the faces, and the close up of
faces suggesting its for makeup. Two weakness’ would include the font being a different as its not clear to
read, and the faces being a bit more defined. I would use this image as inspiration for my own work by using
the water coloured effect.
6// With the 6th image, two strengths would be the natural poses of the model, and the black and white
editing. Two weakness’ would include the images not being full body shots, and using the same model. I
would use this image as inspiration for my own work by using the natural poses and black and white editing.
