Photographer Image Analysis
Stewart Marsden One
Purpose
The purpose of this picture was to show the London underground and everyday
happenings. Stewart Marsden quotes in saying “I watch the people, see new
spaces, new shapes” explaining the inspiration for this picture. Museum will
usually request to use some of these images to represent the urban lifestyle of a
Londoner.
Image analysis
The image consists of a dark tone, due to the fact that he took the picture in
natural lighting (ISO 800). Manuel focus was also used as a way to bring out the
epicenter of the image. The black and white add to the image as it gives it a
underground feeling suggesting to the viewer that there is a different side to
London besides all that gilts and glamor. Also the lack of focus on the woman
walking out of frame suggests that this person is in hurry.
Meaning
The meaning of this image is to show that people in London go by one another
with the mindset they will never see each other again even though they follow
the same routine everyday. The overall meaning that this image feeds of is that
we all keep the world ticking by interacting and creating an atmosphere
wherever we go.
Composition and framing
The composition and framing in this picture is explain in that sometimes its what
you can’t see in an image that draws you into it even more in this case the focus
of the image is actually on the subject who is out of focus. This is effective as the
rule of thirds makes the center image the focus and as you can see the subjects in
the center are looking at the person who is out of focus making them all relevant
in the picture (Middle is main focus and the ones beside are the second focus).
Stewart Marsden Two
Purpose
This black and white picture was taken to show the London skyline view as a
window showing Marsden’s Future past. This is because he was taught that black
and white photographs could never masquerade as reality, which is why it looks
strange with the man looking out at the city from such an angle.
Image Analysis
The image uses natural lighting in that the amount exposure the image is getting
from the skylight resulting in the loss of visual for the much larger skyscrapers in
the image. The rule of thirds managers to make the center focus be the skyline in
the background especially the London bridge which is seen as a landmark
symbol by British eyes. Also everything in this image is shown in full so that
everything can get admired to the same value as the subject looking out at it.
Meaning
The meaning behind this picture is that by not focusing on the individual the
picture unique and the effect and positioning of the individual speaks volumes.
The individual is placed at the bottom of the frame and by doing so it is making it
look as though he is looking out in the busy vast world.
Composition and framing
What we have in this picture is framing with archway on the staircase going
around the main focus, which is the jumping individual. The composition of this
picture is shown immensely due to the fact I applied the rule of thirds to the
image to make it obvious where the subject is in the frame. The subject is in the
bottom left corner of the frame and his positioning helps make it look he is
looking out into the world and we can see the skyline view that he is looking out
into. Apertures f/4.0.
Simon Kennedy One
Purpose
The purpose of this photograph is to show a great peace of architecture in the
form of over lapping stain glass windows being held by a metal frame building.
Simon took this picture in order to give off the complexity of this structure,
which is an office building for a huge British company. The purpose is also to
advertise the building and to request people to possible check it out.
Image analysis
This image expresses a newly commissioned building in natural lighting showing
it as it is seen on a kind of bright morning, perfect and immaculate, emphasising
architectural forms over their context: architecture considered as a whole object,
a unified entity of parts. The building is also meant to look like a Bee’s nest to
represent a busy working environment (Bee’s making honey). Natural light is
used to take this picture which is why the building starts to shine brighter the
further up you go.
Meaning
The meaning of this image is to express that the building was built at a time
when architecture was built to an ideal, with the integrity of real materials and
building elements rather than the simulacra of the postmodern condition.
Another meaning behind this image is to portray the art or practice of designing
and building structures and especially habitable ones.
Composition and Framing
The building is photographed in the best possible light and are very carefully
constructed: visual compositions are created, contingent elements are omitted,
while aspects of the building that can be represented are included rather than
those that can't, such as complex spatial and material sensation. When the rule of
thirds is applied to the image the central focus of the image are the Windows of
the structure underlining that they are the main attraction in this peace. What
helps this image have an architectural effect is the fact that it was taken in
portrait.
Simon Kennedy Two
Purpose
The purpose of this photograph is to show a night lit bridge being reflected from
the water, creating a mirroring effect that would catch the eye of even the most
casual of viewers. This was taken with the idea that other companies and people
would be interested in visiting the location or using the image as wallpaper.
Image Analysis
As this picture was taken during the hosting of the Olympics in London, the
bridge is well lit so that it can play a part in the celebrations. The Photographer
said in order for him to capture this image perfectly he had to use natural light
instead of flash photography. Great use of colour as well as the dimmed out sky
gives a lot to the atmosphere in the picture. The focus is deliberately made to be
the bridge and its reflection for the purpose of that is a beautiful sight.
Meaning
Kennedy's photographs emphasise the need to use natural lighting in
photographs as that way you get a better result and the flash of your camera
doesn't impact the colour of the final product. It ask can such a structure be this
beautiful and be stable at the same time.
Composition and Framing
In this image what the photographer does is draw the viewer into the picture by
using the bushes on either side of the river as frame for the focus which is the
bridge and its reflection in the water – giving a barrier between your subject and
the outside of the shot (adding an extra dimension to the shot). The bridge is
made to look much more visible through its reflection in the water bringing an
element of nature is beautiful if left alone.
Mark Pain One
Purpose
This picture was taken at an iconic moment after the 100-meter final, as Usain
Bolt does his trademark lightning bolt stance. The image has a story behind it,
which is that many were very critical of Bolt prior to this race, but he proved
them wrong and that’s when this picture was taken to show him celebrating with
his countries flag around his neck. (News worthy)
Image Analysis
Mark Pain makes sure that the colours yellow and green stand out as they are
the subject’s nationality and that feeds of the sense that Usain Bolt wasn’t just
doing this for himself, but for his country. The image has an extra shine to it due
to him sweating and the cameras flashing at the same time making him look like
a Greek god. There is a lot of backlight on the subject so that all the focus is on
Bolt instead of the background suggesting that this is his moment.
Meaning
The meaning of this picture is to always capture a moment as it’s happening
especially in this picture as the subject was intentionally posing to the cameras.
This image continues with Mark’s history with capturing sporting moments as
they happen. This moment defined the Olympic games as people waited 4 years
to watch a 10 second race.
Composition and framing
I feel that this image was composed and edited in such a way that it gives the
subject Bolt a shallow depth of field making him the focus of the image and the
second focus being the Olympic logo, which is being obstructed due to the light
reflecting of off it. The Center/focus of the photograph is Usain Bolt this is
important as it shows depicts to the audience that he is important in this image,
which is clever from Mark.
Mark Pain Two
Purpose
This was taken as the legendary Tiger Woods sliced the ball badly and it hit
Mark’s lens, However he managed to capture a shot of the ball a couple of inches
away. The picture went worldwide as it was taken perfectly before impact
making it look like everyone's focus was on the camera instead of Tiger Woods.
This image was taken so that many newspapers, tabloids; magazine could then
pay to use them in their newspapers.
Image Analysis
The image was taken in natural light on a sunny day, during a golfing tournament
as Tiger Woods miscued a shot that then resulted in the ball striking the lens.
Every object and subject in the shot is looking towards the camera due to the
shot, but not intentionally, which is what makes the picture feel natural and
instinctive on the photographers part.
Meaning
This image is bringing you up close and personal with the action, even closer
with the positioning of the ball heading towards the camera. This also shows that
with right reflexes the photographer can capture any moment perfectly if he
anticipates it (zone focusing).
Composition and Framing
The composition of this is that it’s a landscape shot, while the rule of thirds is
established by the fact the golf ball is the central focus as its heading towards
impact with the lens. The ball is also seen as the focus with all the subjects within
the frame. Everything within the frame is in focus except the ball it self which
was out of focus due to the fact that the shutter speed being high and not being
able to capture the movement of the ball.

  • 3. image to make it obvious where the subject is in the frame. The subject is in the bottom left corner of the frame and his positioning helps make it look he is looking out into the world and we can see the skyline view that he is looking out into. Apertures f/4.0. Simon Kennedy One Purpose The purpose of this photograph is to show a great peace of architecture in the form of over lapping stain glass windows being held by a metal frame building. Simon took this picture in order to give off the complexity of this structure, which is an office building for a huge British company. The purpose is also to advertise the building and to request people to possible check it out. Image analysis This image expresses a newly commissioned building in natural lighting showing it as it is seen on a kind of bright morning, perfect and immaculate, emphasising architectural forms over their context: architecture considered as a whole object, a unified entity of parts. The building is also meant to look like a Bee’s nest to represent a busy working environment (Bee’s making honey). Natural light is used to take this picture which is why the building starts to shine brighter the further up you go. Meaning The meaning of this image is to express that the building was built at a time when architecture was built to an ideal, with the integrity of real materials and
  • 4. building elements rather than the simulacra of the postmodern condition. Another meaning behind this image is to portray the art or practice of designing and building structures and especially habitable ones. Composition and Framing The building is photographed in the best possible light and are very carefully constructed: visual compositions are created, contingent elements are omitted, while aspects of the building that can be represented are included rather than those that can't, such as complex spatial and material sensation. When the rule of thirds is applied to the image the central focus of the image are the Windows of the structure underlining that they are the main attraction in this peace. What helps this image have an architectural effect is the fact that it was taken in portrait. Simon Kennedy Two Purpose The purpose of this photograph is to show a night lit bridge being reflected from the water, creating a mirroring effect that would catch the eye of even the most casual of viewers. This was taken with the idea that other companies and people would be interested in visiting the location or using the image as wallpaper. Image Analysis As this picture was taken during the hosting of the Olympics in London, the bridge is well lit so that it can play a part in the celebrations. The Photographer said in order for him to capture this image perfectly he had to use natural light instead of flash photography. Great use of colour as well as the dimmed out sky gives a lot to the atmosphere in the picture. The focus is deliberately made to be the bridge and its reflection for the purpose of that is a beautiful sight. Meaning
  • 5. Kennedy's photographs emphasise the need to use natural lighting in photographs as that way you get a better result and the flash of your camera doesn't impact the colour of the final product. It ask can such a structure be this beautiful and be stable at the same time. Composition and Framing In this image what the photographer does is draw the viewer into the picture by using the bushes on either side of the river as frame for the focus which is the bridge and its reflection in the water – giving a barrier between your subject and the outside of the shot (adding an extra dimension to the shot). The bridge is made to look much more visible through its reflection in the water bringing an element of nature is beautiful if left alone. Mark Pain One Purpose This picture was taken at an iconic moment after the 100-meter final, as Usain Bolt does his trademark lightning bolt stance. The image has a story behind it, which is that many were very critical of Bolt prior to this race, but he proved them wrong and that’s when this picture was taken to show him celebrating with his countries flag around his neck. (News worthy) Image Analysis Mark Pain makes sure that the colours yellow and green stand out as they are the subject’s nationality and that feeds of the sense that Usain Bolt wasn’t just doing this for himself, but for his country. The image has an extra shine to it due to him sweating and the cameras flashing at the same time making him look like
  • 6. a Greek god. There is a lot of backlight on the subject so that all the focus is on Bolt instead of the background suggesting that this is his moment. Meaning The meaning of this picture is to always capture a moment as it’s happening especially in this picture as the subject was intentionally posing to the cameras. This image continues with Mark’s history with capturing sporting moments as they happen. This moment defined the Olympic games as people waited 4 years to watch a 10 second race. Composition and framing I feel that this image was composed and edited in such a way that it gives the subject Bolt a shallow depth of field making him the focus of the image and the second focus being the Olympic logo, which is being obstructed due to the light reflecting of off it. The Center/focus of the photograph is Usain Bolt this is important as it shows depicts to the audience that he is important in this image, which is clever from Mark. Mark Pain Two Purpose This was taken as the legendary Tiger Woods sliced the ball badly and it hit Mark’s lens, However he managed to capture a shot of the ball a couple of inches away. The picture went worldwide as it was taken perfectly before impact making it look like everyone's focus was on the camera instead of Tiger Woods. This image was taken so that many newspapers, tabloids; magazine could then pay to use them in their newspapers. Image Analysis The image was taken in natural light on a sunny day, during a golfing tournament as Tiger Woods miscued a shot that then resulted in the ball striking the lens. Every object and subject in the shot is looking towards the camera due to the
  • 7. shot, but not intentionally, which is what makes the picture feel natural and instinctive on the photographers part. Meaning This image is bringing you up close and personal with the action, even closer with the positioning of the ball heading towards the camera. This also shows that with right reflexes the photographer can capture any moment perfectly if he anticipates it (zone focusing). Composition and Framing The composition of this is that it’s a landscape shot, while the rule of thirds is established by the fact the golf ball is the central focus as its heading towards impact with the lens. The ball is also seen as the focus with all the subjects within the frame. Everything within the frame is in focus except the ball it self which was out of focus due to the fact that the shutter speed being high and not being able to capture the movement of the ball.
