"Tobacco Cessation and Addiction Recovery" is presented by Anna Byberg, Dawn Farm Project Manager. This program describes the prevalence of tobacco addiction among alcoholics and drug addicts, the relationship between tobacco use and recovery, and basic information about how to quit using tobacco. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual workshop series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about chemical dependency, recovery, family and related issues. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance that not only perpetuates tobacco use, the leading cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in the United States, but also has its own adverse effects. Nicotine addiction is a chronic and relapsing disease and the prevalence of nicotine addiction is higher than that of alcohol and other drug addiction. The use of nicotine-containing products not only is associated with developing nicotine addiction, but also with using and becoming addicted to alcohol and other drugs.
Despite the decline in recent years in the use of cigarettes, the use of alternative, non-cigarette nicotine products has been rising dramatically. While the overall harm of these products appears to be considerably lower than the harms associated with cigarette use, all nicotine-containing products carry the risk of addiction and other adverse health effects and, therefore, are a threat to the public health.

Tobacco has been used for a very long time in the Americas and some of the adjacent countries due to its intense effects on the central nervous system and the feeling of excitement brought about by it. Tobacco is a type of agricultural crops that contains a chemical that is required for the production of cigarettes and chewed tobacco products. Within the tobacco leaf, there is a specific chemical known as nicotine, which is an ingredient that leads to addiction and causes tobacco abuse. This is why many people who smoke cigarette (intake of nicotine) will get addicted and will not easily quit tobacco use, thus developing a condition known as tobacco abuse or tobacco dependence. Tobacco abuse or tobacco dependence can be defined as an addiction to the use of tobacco products due to the intake of nicotine substance. For this reason, nicotine is the chemical that is responsible for the cause of this addiction or abuse. There is no safe level of tobacco use. Our body will become dependent on nicotine psychologically or physically. Once you start using tobacco, you will find it very difficult to stop using it. This is because the body has developed a tolerance to the effects of nicotine. In addition, tobacco use cannot be stopped abruptly as it will interrupt with the normal body functions for someone who relies on it to kick start the day.

World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31st to raise awareness of the threats posed by tobacco consumption and the tobacco industry. This research paper shall outline the problem of how to quit smoking as it has been a habit that am contemplating to abandon. Cultivating Mindfulness to Support Recovery
“Cultivating Mindfulness to Support Recovery” was presented on Tuesday December 17, 2013; by Libby Robinson Ph.D., MSW. Mindfulness practices can help support an individual’s recovery from substance use disorders. This presentation will describe mindfulness, provide opportunities to experience and cultivate mindfulness, and review the evidence of its positive effect on recovery. Dr. Robinson has taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction since 2003. She has practiced mindfulness meditation since 1979 and was trained to teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction by Jon Kabat-Zinn and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness, where he developed this program for cultivating mindfulness. She recently retired from the University of Michigan, where she was a U of M Research Assistant Professor, carrying out NIH-funded research on the role of spiritual and religious change in recovery. She also did an NIAAA post-doctoral fellowship at the U of M Addiction Research Center and was on the social work faculty at Case Western Reserve University and the University at Buffalo. Dr. Robinson has an MSW and MPH from the University of Michigan, as well as her Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Work. Collegiate Recovery Programs: Supporting Second Chances - October 2012
The transition to a college environment can pose significant risk to a recovering student and to students at risk for alcohol/other drug problems. Many colleges and universities, including the University of Michigan, have developed programs to help recovering students maintain their recovery, excel academically and have a normative college experience apart from the culture of alcohol and other drug use. Research demonstrates exceptionally high rates of academic success and sustained recovery among students who participate in Collegiate Recovery Programs. This presentation will provide an overview of the national and local efforts to build recovery support programs on college campuses, and provide information about what parents and students should look for as they explore their options for pursuing a degree of higher education. The program is presented by Mary Jo Desprez, MA; Director of Health Promotion and Community Relations, for the University of Michigan. Mary Jo manages both the Alcohol and Other Drug Prevention Program and the Collegiate Recovery Program at the University of Michigan. Gastrointestinal Infections
GASTROINTESTINAL INFECTIONS result from the ingestion of pathogens that cause infections at the level of this tract, generally being transmitted by food, water and hands contaminated by microorganisms such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Vibrio cholerae, Campylobacter, Staphylococcus, Rotavirus among others that are generally contained in feces, thus configuring a FECAL-ORAL type of transmission.
Among the factors that lead to the occurrence of gastrointestinal infections are the hygienic and sanitary deficiencies that characterize our markets and other places where raw or cooked food is sold, poor environmental sanitation in communities, deficiencies in water treatment (or in the process of its plumbing), risky hygienic-sanitary habits (not washing hands after major and/or minor needs), among others.
These are generally consequences (signs and symptoms) resulting from gastrointestinal infections: diarrhea, vomiting, fever and malaise, among others.
The treatment consists of replacing lost liquids and electrolytes (drinking drinking water and other recommended liquids, including consumption of juicy fruits such as papayas, apples, pears, among others that contain water in their composition).
To prevent this, it is necessary to promote health education, improve the hygienic-sanitary conditions of markets and communities in general as a way of promoting, preserving and prolonging PUBLIC HEALTH.
Gastritis and Gastric Health
Gastric Health is one of the most relevant concerns in human health, with gastrointestinal infections being among the main illnesses that affect humans.
Among gastric problems, we have GASTRITIS AND GASTRIC ULCERS as the main public health problems. Gastritis and gastric ulcers normally result from inflammation and corrosion of the walls of the stomach (gastric mucosa) and are generally associated (caused) by the bacterium Helicobacter pylor, which, according to the literature, this bacterium settles on these walls (of the stomach) and starts to release urease that ends up altering the normal pH of the stomach (acid), which leads to inflammation and corrosion of the mucous membranes and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.
In addition to bacterial infections, gastritis and gastric ulcers are associated with several factors, with emphasis on prolonged fasting, chemical substances including drugs, alcohol, foods with strong seasonings including chilli, which ends up causing inflammation of the stomach walls and/or corrosion. of the same, resulting in the appearance of wounds and consequent gastritis or ulcers, respectively.

Breast cancer in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+) status is a common and complex condition that necessitates a multifaceted approach to management. HR+ breast cancer means that the cancer cells grow in response to hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. This subtype is prevalent among postmenopausal women and typically exhibits a more indolent course compared to other forms of breast cancer, which allows for a variety of treatment options.
Diagnosis and Staging
The diagnosis of HR+ breast cancer begins with clinical evaluation, imaging, and biopsy. Imaging modalities such as mammography, ultrasound, and MRI help in assessing the extent of the disease. Histopathological examination and immunohistochemical staining of the biopsy sample confirm the diagnosis and hormone receptor status by identifying the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) and progesterone receptors (PR) on the tumor cells.
Staging involves determining the size of the tumor (T), the involvement of regional lymph nodes (N), and the presence of distant metastasis (M). The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system is commonly used. Accurate staging is critical as it guides treatment decisions.
Treatment Options
Endocrine Therapy
Endocrine therapy is the cornerstone of treatment for HR+ breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The primary goal is to reduce the levels of estrogen or block its effects on cancer cells. Commonly used agents include:
Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs): Tamoxifen is a SERM that binds to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen from stimulating breast cancer cells. It is effective but may have side effects such as increased risk of endometrial cancer and thromboembolic events.
Aromatase Inhibitors (AIs): These drugs, including anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, lower estrogen levels by inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens to estrogen in peripheral tissues. AIs are generally preferred in postmenopausal women due to their efficacy and safety profile compared to tamoxifen.
Selective Estrogen Receptor Downregulators (SERDs): Fulvestrant is a SERD that degrades estrogen receptors and is used in cases where resistance to other endocrine therapies develops.
Combination Therapies
Combining endocrine therapy with other treatments enhances efficacy. Examples include:
Endocrine Therapy with CDK4/6 Inhibitors: Palbociclib, ribociclib, and abemaciclib are CDK4/6 inhibitors that, when combined with endocrine therapy, significantly improve progression-free survival in advanced HR+ breast cancer.
Endocrine Therapy with mTOR Inhibitors: Everolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, can be added to endocrine therapy for patients who have developed resistance to aromatase inhibitors.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is generally reserved for patients with high-risk features, such as large tumor size, high-grade histology, or extensive lymph node involvement. Regimens often include anthracyclines and taxanes.
