What is Toastmasters? Toastmasters is a world renowned educational program designed to help people become better speakers, better listeners, and more effective leaders. There are clubs in over 100 countries.
Youth Leadership Program This eight-week program is a local community outreach program designed to help you develop your speaking and leadership skills.
Why are we here? The ability to clearly express your thoughts to others often determines how successful you are in life. Good speaking skills are acquired through practice.
Choose a partner you do not know well Interview each other (3 minutes) Ex: Why are you interested in joining this Youth Leadership group ? Ex: What is your favorite pastime? The objective is to find out what makes your partner unique Introduce your partner to the group (1 minute) using the information from the interview Let’s Get Acquainted!
Chairmanship Over the course of your life, you will attend many meetings. Chairmanship and group discussion rules are used in all organizations. A chairman knows meeting rules and parliamentary procedure.

Role of the Chairman Not a dictator, but a leader who knows… the basic rules of procedure the business to be conducted the order of business his or her own rights and rights of members
Tips for Good Meetings Have an agenda Start and end the meeting on time Keep the discussion on track Encourage everyone to participate Make certain the meeting’s purpose is accomplished
Nominations and Elections Slate One & Slate Two President Vice President Secretary Sergeant-At-Arms
President Presides over meetings Is responsible for the planning and organization of meetings Makes sure officers and participants are prepared
Vice President Assists president in program planning Assumes duties of president if president is absent Acts as timer for Table Topics exercise (1 or 2 minutes) and individual speeches (4 to 5 minutes)
Secretary Keeps records of each meeting Reads minutes of previous meetings Assists coordinator in keeping rolls, distributing materials, and communicating with group members when required
Sergeant-at-Arms Is responsible for equipment storage and preparation Prepares the meeting place for each meeting Is responsible for physical comfort of guests and members during meetings (seating, lighting, air conditioning, etc.) Assists president in keeping order
The “Nomination” Procedure Stand up and say, I nominate _________________ for the office of _________________. When Slate One is completed, you will nominate Slate Two. “ I move the nominations be closed.” Another one says, “I second the motion.”
Speech Evaluation How do you stand as a speaker? (p.6 in your Workbook) Using the Evaluation Guide (handout) – we will  all  evaluate each other at each session.
