Thachtli was an ancient Mesoamerican ball game played between prisoner teams as a ritual honor for gods like Amapan, Uappatzi, and Huitzilopochtli. The rubber ball symbolized the sun's movement and high stakes gambling occurred. Losing players were sometimes sacrificed after games. The ball was made of rubber and weighed 4-5 kg. The I-shaped stone courts had tall hoops, and players wore padding due to the heavy ball but could still be injured. Teams passed the ball without it touching the ground in order to score in the hoops.
