CODES AND CONVENTIONS
Codes and Conventions of drama genre are
focused on real life situations to emotionally
effect the audience. Codes are divided in two
ways, technical and symbolic. The slow music of
Titanic can be technical and symbolic as it is
linked to the characters actions in the movie.
Convention in Titanic are the additional scenes
such as sadness or showing more emotions.
NARRATIVE
Titanic is a love story set against real historical events: the sinking of
the great ocean liner amongst the ice packs of the North Atlantic in
1912. Directed by James Cameron starring actors such as Leonardo
DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Billy Zane. It is listed amongst the top ten
grossing films of all time. It has won eleven Oscar awards including the
much sought after award of Best Motion Picture. In its first year of
release it sold more tickets than any other motion picture in history
and it was the first ever to gross one billion dollars in worldwide sales.
The three-minute sequence I have chosen to look at starts with Old
Rose telling the discovery crew about what the Titanic was like. She
then has a flashback and the film goes back to the day of the Titanic's
maiden voyage.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
Leonardo DiCaprio who plays Jack in the movie falls in love with Rose
who is played by Kate Winslet. Rose who is engaged to be married to a
very rich man falls hard for jack and they have to sneak around to be
together. More suspense strikes when the ship collides with an iceberg
and only a certain few are allowed into the life boats. Jack is not one of
the lucky voyagers and dies at sea. Rose is devastated by this memory
because she survives the tragedy and is portrayed by an old lady telling
of that fateful voyage. This film jumps from one scene to the next.
From Rose being young and on the Titanic to when she is an old lady
telling the crew searching for the remains of the Titanic about her life
story. This order made the plot more interesting, the old Rose helped
build up to the sinking and when she started crying it made the scene
even more dramatic.
SOUND
Dialogue in a movie is when the characters are interacting with one
another verbally. Sound effects in a movie are used to make the scenes
seem more realistic. In the scene where Titanic is breaking in half the
sound effects are extremely realistic. as the ship is sinking we can hear
a background music played by one solo instrumentalist, or by a small
group of instrumentalists . The effects in the scene where the Titanic is
sinking is realistic. The water is coming into the ship and busting out
windows and people are jumping from the ship in the hope of saving
themselves from a certain death. The special effects in this scene were
extraordinary. If the special effects such as the glass bursting or the
pole breaking and making an sound were removed from this scene it
would not be as believable. Special effects are what makes a movie
more enjoyable.
EDITING
The film has a high density of shots. the shots are always dynamic and
interesting, supporting the film’s quick and energetic editing pace. so
the actors are frequently photographed in the foreground, and the
elements of the ship visible in the background. In one of the greatest
epic shots of the film, the camera starts with a close-up of Rose
coming out of the water and screaming for Jack, only to pull back to an
overhead wide angle shot to reveal an endless crowd of people
fighting for survival in the darkness of the ocean.
MISE EN SCENE
Various elements of visual design that are incorporated in this scene
allow for audiences to be immersed into the emotion of the
characters. As the sun sets in the sky, an array of gorgeous colors
appear, which clearly reflect the mood. Glowing oranges and pinks are
mixed with sweet purples to create a backdrop that implies loving
connection. These colors are also reflected in the expressions of
happiness on both of the characters faces which are bright pink. One
can also observe the set design of this scene, which is intentionally
empty and open. Despite the thousands of others aboard the Titanic,
no other people are anywhere near the front of the boat or the deck
space in which this scene unfolds. In this moment, it is although the
rest of the world has stopped and it is just Jack and Rose.
REPRESENTAION
The opening scene of the movie titanic shows the large number of
people waving to the huge ship leaving the harbor. It shows how
formally people including women were dressed. The very slow
emotional music in the background plays throughout the opening
scene. Then ending shows the modern machinery going deep inside
the ocean to find the gigantic ship after it sank.
TYPOGRAPHY
In the film opening , it shows ‘the Paramount Pictures and Twentieth
Century Fox’. It further shows the ‘ A Lightstorm Entertainment
Production’. Then a bigger font of words ‘TITANIC’ appears
representing the actual movie name.
