In this keynote presentation I explore the value of WIL in providing key skills for future workforce needs. Against a backdrop of significant changes in the workplace and challenges to resources and recognition within institutions, I ask whether institutions can make WIL experiences accessible, meaningful and of high quality for all our students. Newcastle University's Career-ready Placements project will provide a critical case study to better understand and address key challenges in this area.

7. About TISS
O The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as
the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was
renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The year 1964 was an
important landmark in the history of the Institute, when it was
declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University
Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956.
Since its inception, the Vision of the TISS has been to be an institution
of excellence in higher education that continually responds to
changing social realities through the development and application of

8. About TISS SVE
O In December 2011, Tata Institute of Social Sciences set up the School of
Vocational Education (SVE) to provide immediate and definite
interventions to improve the skill levels of millions of youth, through
appropriate vocational training programmes. The target beneficiaries
include organized and unorganized workforce across the industries and
SVE aims to cover every individual who needs to develop employable
skills. A vision of creating an ecosystem that would bring back the
dignity of labour to all professions and occupations to create sustainable
sources of income for the blue collar workforce and youth in the country.
O AIM: The aim is ‘Earn while you learn’. The model enables the students
to learn the skills by engaging in on-the-job training at real shop floor of
the industry/company along with theory training in the classroom.
Through the model, the trainee may also earn a modest stipend during
on-the-job training of the course. Although, this is not mandatory for any
institution, TISS-SVE strongly encourages its Skill Knowledge Providers
(SKPs) to adopt this practice.
9. FaQ’s & Disclaimer
O Eligibility: Minimum Graduate
O Exam: The question papers have a pattern of 20% Objective
and 80% Subjective. Written offline exams are conducted at
the Eduroof hub. The paper will be of 100 marks and passing
marks will be 40 Marks. The students are required to submit
the Project in each semester with OJT book (On Job Training
Book).
O Faculties: Faculties may change from time to time if required.
O Class Timings may vary from morning to evening or vice versa
or days may also change if required.
