United States. While everyone could generally agree on what they wanted fair wages, an end to

people of color? Two major philosophies on the matter stemmed from the minds of great activists

community in the 60 s, Malcolm X s approach to the matter makes a more compelling argument by

Both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X agreed that boycotting white only industries was
a sound method of protest against white supremacy in the economy. However, Dr. King s
approach to the problem ended there. This is not to say that his boycotts weren t effective at all:

community by more than two million dollars annually (King), showing that King s plans weren t

I used to be a person who was hung up on material possessions. I was always wanting more, never

power men were in possession of. Furthermore, in the novel as opposed to the movie, it is seen
that Henry divorces his wife, Katherine of Aragon (who was originally married to his brother),
after realising that, as stated in Leviticus 20:21, sleeping with another mans wife is barred by the
Catholic church and such a union will remain childless. These intertextual references give the men
arguably Biblical power, reinforced by the nomenclature: with the central main character of King
Henry consistently being referred to as either King , My Lord or His Majesty . While his dealings

I believe the single biggest pressure that caused the most issues for England in the 16th and 17th
century relate to the Reformation. The Reformation effected everyone in the country as they
were forced into a new religion headed by the King. It drastically changed people s lives and it s
no wonder why the change wasn t fully accepted for a long time. Rapid population increase
caused a significant strain on the country as they needed to develop new ways to feed everyone.
The abolishment of common lands in favor of enclosure agriculture strained the poorest people
in the country. All of these created mass amounts of tension and stress within a society
transitioning into an economic power. In 1534, the English Parliament passed the Act of
Supremacy effectively placing Henry the 8th as the head of the English Church. His royal
prerogative was extended to deciding the religion in which the country would follow. The need
of a male heir played a significant role in this decision, along with the opinions of many
throughout the Christian world that Catholic Church was corrupt beyond repair. The event left
the English citizens in a state of disbelief and resentment as their whole lives seemed to be
turned upside down. There would be a number of consequences resulting from the Reformation.
For starters the government began dissolving the monasteries which provided a number of
services to their communities around them, such as education and several acted as hospitals. The
King attempted to compensate for these lost services by establishing public services to his
citizens with the money he was gaining from the land he acquired from the monasteries.
Unfortunately the money was poorly spend and did not adequately replace the services of the
monasteries. Adding on to this a large chunk of the population refused to follow the newly
created church. Several clergymen who didn t recognize Henry as the new head of the church
were executed for not swearing loyalty to him. Furthermore thousands of people would rise up

In the story, All Summer in a Day, Ray Bradbury draws us in, as readers, with a story that takes
place on the planet Venus. The environment of Venus is as described in this quote, It had been
raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end
to the other with rain, with the gush and gush of water...fall of showers and the concussion of
storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands... (Bradbury, 1954) With an
environment like this, what type of people would those on Venus be if they had never felt, saw,
or experienced the sun before? The only one that has experienced and remembers the sun is a
young girl, Margot. Margot lived on Earth until she was four years old, unlike the others who
have been living underground in Venus for their entire lives. Because of this, Margot is
constantly facing problems regarding her classmates jealousy of her past opportunities. Without
the sun, she has become, as Bradbury writes, ...a very frail girl who looked as if she had been
lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her
mouth and the yellow from her hair. She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened

Bradbury, the theme is that jealousy and ignorance can blind us from seeing things how they

ignorance can shield a person from the truth is through the main character, Margot, who is

The Problem
Because kids come from different cultural and economic backgrounds, it is difficult to engage all
students 100% of the time. Furthermore, many students, to help their parents financially, work
after school or misses school entirely to take care of their siblings while Mom and Dad work
many parents cannot afford daycare. Some students are homeless, living on the street or with
relatives for a week or two at a time. Moreover, our refugee students (from war torn countries)
suffer from both Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and anxiety caused by the process of acculturation.
Students who have normal home lives may suffer abuse, neglect, and may have family addicted to
drugs and alcohol. Stress and anxiety levels are at an all time high for today s youth; therefore, it is
not surprising that they are apathetic about learning. While this general apathy in education has
increased rapidly over the last few years, there is good news. We already have the remedy and it
costs nothing. De Lay (2014), suggests that student apathy is a by product of mediocre teaching and
the absence of a learning purpose. At its best, the current educational system is archaic. As a result,
students are taught to think in a linear fashion that is wholly unlike the world in which they live
