Slings for hoisting and rigging must be selected & used with care. The workers need to inspect the sling for use with focus on size, weight, shape, temperature, and sensitivity of the material being moved, and the environmental conditions. The Infographic shows key tips for use of slings.

1. Tips for using slings
in workplace
Select the sling based on their
intended use, the type and size of load,
and the environmental conditions of the
worksite
Clean the sling thoroughly and inspect
it properly for broken wires, damaged
rope strands and other signs of wear or
defects
Discard the damaged wire rope slings
Check the tension on the sling before
carrying loads
Take up the slack in the sling to guard
against shock loading. Be doubly cau-
tious when applying power at the begin-
ning of the lift
Lubricate every rope sling “in the field”
to prolong their service
Keep the path of travel clear of workers
whenever you raise, lower or lower the
load
Maintain a close watch on slings and
equipment
In the event of an accident, the
operator must immediately shut down
all equipment and report the accident
to the supervisor before resuming
operations
Store the slings in a dry, well-
ventilated building or shed. Never
store them on the ground. it’s best to
hang them in a wall or rack
Never leave the load suspended in air
