The Strict Liability Theory
The Strict Liability Theory Introduction Strict Liability in simplistic terms can imply an individual
or company being liable for their deeds, conducts and outcomes that result in damages to others. A
personal complaint of injury for a strict liability case is not as a consequence of a foreplanned
action or careless deed (Boatright, 2012). The respondent s action should have triggered strict
liability and that the complainant suffered harm. In fact, one cannot understand what strict liability
in the criminal law means, in the same token understand why it is considered unorthodox and
morally dyslogistic. The respondent s responsibility and blameworthiness, or mental fault should be
evaluated and, more particularly, the usual relevance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lastly, the owner knew or should have recognized the animal s specific solicitude (Alabama injury
law advisor, 2009). In a case involving a domestic animal, the owner is most certainly liable only if
he has prior knowledge that his animal has dangerous behaviors and mannerisms. The First bite rule
states that the owner is accountable for the second occasion that his animal bites somebody, but not
the first instance it bites. Aberrantly Dangerous Activity Strict liability is a certainty for all such
activities that involve more or less so substantial risk of harm in their functionality and performance.
If the respondent engages in any array of activities and fortuitously and non negligently causes harm
to the complainant, he or she is strictly liable. Must be remembered, this is subject to a few
limitations that are beyond the jurisdiction of Strict Liability Theory. Essentially, abnormally
dangerous activities include all activities related to nuclear reactors, explosives, crop spraying and
many others (CantГє, 2002). At present, for ascertaining the extent to which an activity is
abnormally dangerous, the courts focus their emphasis on the following factors. Firstly, the high
degree of risk of harm to person or property. Secondly, the attributable gravity of the damage to the
activity and whether a party responsible cannot perform the activity with complete safety.
Moreover, the limits to which the activity is

Essay On The Haymarket Affair
The Haymarket affair took place in Chicago on May 4, 1886 during the period in American
history known as the Gilded age. During this period there was political corruptness and tension
between the rich and poor. The Haymarket affair occurred after protesters were killed by police
while striking against their employer for an 8 hour work day. The next day Laborers rallied at the
Haymarket to protest the death of their friends and towards the end of the rally an Anarchist within
the crowd through a bomb at a group of policeofficers. In return the police opened fire on the crowd
and killed many protesters. The action of this one unidentified mancost the lives of numerous

Black, the defendants attorney, picked up Parson and his wife from an apartment building not far
from the court house. Parson had been in hiding since the attack and it was never deserved as to
where he went. The police say he went to Arkansas, but it was never confirmed to be true. Parson
as well as the other defendants pleaded not guilty to the accusations because the evidence against
them was almost extremely weak. Although they prosecutors had little evidence the grand jury
convicted the men for conspiracy of murder. It was not hard for the jury to make this conclusion
since a majority of the accused men were Russian immigrants, and at the time they were being
labeled as terrorist across the nation. Despite being accused Parson and Spies spent the night in a
cell together laughing and looking back on how they never gave up on what they believed in. In
conclusion, the Haymarket affair took the lives of innocent who were fighting for a better life. The
influence that the press and big employers had on society caused the men accused to be convicted
without any evidence proving them guilty. Society thought the police were serving justice when
their motives were to get revenge. The actions taken by the press, police, and big employers were
exactly what the Labor Movement was fighting against, and for that they paid the ultimate

Laurie In J. B. Priestley s Short Story, Charles
In the short story, Charles , the main character Laurie is a young boy whose behavior starts
changing when he goes to kindergarten. He comes home every day and tells his parents about a
mischievous, ill behaved child named Charles who gets into trouble each day at school. One day
Charles hit the teacher while other day he bounces a girl against the see saw. He says bad words
and makes another girl say bad word. As Charles behavior gets worse and worse, Laurie s mother,
the narrator, wonders how the class could allow a student like that to stay. She inquires with
Laurie s teacher about Charles during a PTA meeting. However, to her surprise, there is no student

tries to dress up as a grown up boy and does not bother to wave goodbye to his mom. When he
comes home, he slams the door and screams, Is anybody home? which illustrates he is seeking
attention for himself. He doesn t seem to take care of his baby sibling neither help his parents in
any of the chores. It s always about him. Laurie disrespects his father. In the story it states, What?
his father said, looking up. Look down, Laurie said. Look at my thumb. Gee, you re dumb. He
began to laugh insanely. This shows Laurie disregards his parents and does whatever he wishes.
Next, Laurie is undisciplined. Laurie s parents are focused on Laurie s classmate Charles bad
behavior and turn a blind eye to their own son s bad behavior. They fail to discipline Laurie on
multiple occasions. Laurie comes from school and slams the door, talks disrespectfully to his father

Comparing Death of a Salesman and The American Dream Essay
Comparing Death of a Salesman and The American Dream
In Arthur Miller s Death of A Salesman and Edward Albee s The American Dream, Willy
Lowman and Mommy possess the trait of superficiality. Their priorities are to look good and be
liked, and this contributes to their misguided paths to reach success. This attribute is one of many
societal criticisms pointed out by both authors. Arthur Miller criticizes society for perceiving
success as being liked and having good looks. He illustrates society s perception through Willy, who
thinks the keys to success are being popular and attractive. Willy transmits this philosophy to his
sons by ignoring their education and personal growth and setting an example that popularity is most

Willy continues to teach his sons his misguided values by telling them education is almost useless
and a good body is a fine substitute.
Bernard can get the best marks in school, y understand , but when he gets out in the business
world, y understand, you are going to be five times ahead of him. That s why I thank the Almighty
God you re both built like Adonises. Because the man that makes the appearance in the business
world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you ll never
want. (pg. 33)
Willy is now misleading his sons into thinking good looks will keep them alive in the corporate
world and education won t, yet Willy is a man with respectable looks and he isn t surviving in the
same world. Fifteen years later, Willy continues to preach the same theory, even after he has seen
both his sons fail in the world, having been guided by his words. Prior to Biff s proposal to Bill
Oliver for ten thousand dollars , Willy is still stuffing his sons heads with the same misleading
advise.
It s not what you say, it s how you say it because personality always wins the day. (pg. 65)
Willy s final words of advise to Biff are no different than his first and no more educational. Biff, like
Willy, does not learn from his mistakes and steals a fountain pen from Bill Oliver, leaving him
unable to face Oliver again to ask for money. Willy s advice on the

Essay on The Role of Men in Adrienne Rich s Of Woman Born
The Role of Men in Of Woman Born
Adrienne Rich, via Of Woman Born, has created a wonderfully complex description and analysis of
the condition of being a woman in our patriarchal American culture, or at least in the middle class,
white portion of it, as she acknowledges in the introduction to the 1986 edition of the book. Since I
happen to fit into this category, I find this book to be very personally satisfying, although I can
certainly imagine that Rich s writings wouldn t be completely applicable to all women in America.
Rich examines the various issues surrounding multiple aspects of being a woman motherhood,
relations with men, relations with children, relations with the patriarchy at large, etc. with a ... Show

Women, as the inculturators of children, have the potential usually unrecognized for using this
power to change the society. Reading Of Woman Born has caused me to reevaluate this final idea
in ways that I will try to briefly explain.
First of all, to say simply that women have the power to change the way they inculturate
children, and thus the culture at large, is to deny the reality that women are not one group
thinking with one mind about changes that should be made. And, of course, it is very difficult to
change your own inculturation and recreate yourself, much more difficult to change the way in
which you relate to the larger society. My own beliefs of the power of women had much more
to do with some sort of potential that seems to lie untapped, that might be used to change the
culture if only women could be unified in their views and efforts in regards to our violent
patriarchal culture. The problem I now see in this sort of viewpoint is that it tends to lay the
blame for the culture at the feet of women. It provides another source of guilt for the mother, for
either not trying to raise her children in a different way, or, as Rich explores, for raising her
children to be potential outcasts.
Rich refers to this issue of inculturation especially in the chapter titled Mother and Son, Woman and
Man. In the context of critiquing my own earlier views on this, section 6 of this chapter seems
important. Rich writes here about sons,

Many people don t realize the value something till it s gone. It may be the advice someone gave

True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie. While reading this novel the reader realized
that Arnold understood that being poor and living on the reservation wouldn t be easy for him if
he wanted to fulfill his dreams. The character decided to go to Reardan and study while he leaves
his best friend behind. He faces some problems at the beginning but most of the problem gets
solved near the end. Arnold also called Junior hears news of his grandmother s death, he loved his
grandmother a lot and he couldn t help but think why she died because she passed away because
a car hit her not because of old age. A couple of days later Eugene, Juniors dad s friend passed
away he was really close to junior which made him sad. Most of the people on the reservation
died because they were drunk. Everything was going fine for a couple of days when suddenly
Junior gets the news that his sister passed away he felt like everything around him was negative
and that he was going to be next. On the day of his basketball game, he thought of Eugene and
what he would always say while he Junior was playing that gave him the playing spirit and
encouraged him this is when he regained hope. By discussing how hard it can be to lose hope,

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider
The big science project The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider is a particle accelerator that

Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider with regards to economical and social factors. I will argue that this
project is a waste of money due to the riskiness of it, the overall set budget, and the concept behind
it. However, it also has its benefits such as, providing more education and knowledge about our
world, giving us unlimited possibilities to understand, and answers to our questions.

Increased size of ventricles has been observed in MRI of a schizophrenic person. One possible
explanation to enlarged ventricles could have occurred during neurodevelopment causing the illness

(Veaugue, 2007).According to the dopamine hypothesis, when high levels of dopamine are found
in the mesolimbic and when low levels of dopamine found in the prefrontal cortex, symptoms of
schizophrenia will occur. When the cortical pathway through the nucleus accumbens is disturbed,
there will be an increase subcortical release of dopamine, which in turn causes the D2 receptor to
be activated. This process will result in positive symptoms of schizophrenia forming. The reduction
of the D1 receptor found in the prefrontal cortex together with the decrease of activity in the
nucleus caudatus will cause negative symptoms of schizophrenia (dopamine). The dopamine
hypothesis is the most accepted hypothesis, yet scientists are still unsure of why there is an excess
of dopamine in the body (article 1?).Glutamate is another neurotransmitter that could possibly be a
causing factor in schizophrenia. Glutamate helps with learning as well as the encoding of memory.
A schizophrenic person will have a lower amount of Glutamate in their body. Dopamine as well as
Halucinatnic drugs PCP block the glutamate receptor sites, lowering the amount of Glutamate in

Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella...
Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger
umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found
worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative
theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the
complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food
consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent
of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever
present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise
of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison
of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available
food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for
consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit
are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the
physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and
physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic
societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when

Human Impact On No2 And Company Comparison
Human Activity Impact on NO2 and CO Comparison
Lynn Dietrich
Virginia Aerospace Science and Technology Scholars
Abstract
Human activity can change the world incredibly fast. We have to monitor those changes the best we
can in order to understand any damage that is being done. We use satellites and specialized
instruments to monitor the changes in our atmosphere. The levels of pollution that humans are
responsible for has to be monitored so that any danger can be avoided. We have to study the
components of the atmosphere to understand what is harmful and what is not.

It is formed when hydrocarbon fuels are burned (Thompson). CO is mainly produced by industrial
processes, some fires, and internal combustion engines (Blakemore and Jennett, 2016). Like NO2,
the highest levels of carbon monoxide will be found in places with large cities and industries.
Carbon monoxide has local and global effects. High amounts are dangerous to people s health
locally. CO can be spread by winds throughout the troposphere, having a global effect (Ichoku).
Carbon monoxide is being studied to see its role in atmospheric chemistry and the ability of the
atmosphere to cleanse itself of harmful pollutants (Ichoku). Humans are the source of a huge
amount of pollution. Human activity has caused nitrogen dioxide levels to rise. This rise has
increased pollution levels and has hurt the atmosphere. Human activity has also caused carbon
monoxide levels to rise, but unlike NO2, carbon monoxide can easily be spread around the world by
wind. The spread of carbon monoxide has added to pollution and hurt the atmosphere. Human
activity can have a very drastic effect on our world in a relatively short amount of time. With the
help of satellites and monitoring instruments, we can see those effects and try to act on the data
before any major damage is done. As humans continue to pollute the environment, scientists
continue to monitor the constant changes in the atmosphere and other components to try and

The Argument That It s Wrong Buy Expensive Suits Essay
952655626 1. Explain Singer s argument that it s wrong to buy expensive suits. One premise in
that argument depends on the claim that it is wrong not to prevent bad if you can do so without
giving up anything of comparable moral importance. In the paper, he offers a weaker version of
that premise. What is it? Why does he think that stronger version is true? Singer s argument Let
s imagine I am in Michael Kehoe s, ready to purchase a brand new suit for $500. As I am about
to swipe my card, I see charity volunteers soliciting donations for malaria ridden Africa. They
claim: It only cost $250 to save a life from malaria! Suppose this was true and by giving my $500
to charity I would save two people from dying of malaria. However, I only have $500 and will
no longer be able to by the suit, if I donate the money towards saving malaria victims. Given this
choice, how ought one act, morally? According to Peter Singer, it would be morally wrong for
me to purchase the suit, instead of saving the lives. He offers us the following argument: (S1)
Suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical care are bad, typically. (S2) If it is in
your power to prevent something bad from happening, without sacrificing anything of comparable
importance, it is wrong not to do so. (C0) If it is in your power to prevent suffering and death
from lack of food, shelter, and medical care without sacrificing anything of comparable importance,
it is wrong not to do so. (S3) It is in

Conflict Between Narcissism And Aggression Essay
Correspondingly, the propaganda of both Croats and Serbs indulged their populations to believe
that each side was responsible for their suffering.
Further there is a psychological dimension of the ethnic nationalism that is centered around
peoples perceptions when questioning their identity. Conflict is a process driven by collective
needs and fears that comes from a psychological aspect. Psychology drives attitudes and
behaviours of individuals and groups. Using Freud s analysis, Ignatieff focuses our attention on the
relationship between narcissism and aggression. Narcissism is a personality trait that involves
arrogant behavior, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for self admiration.
Ignatieff exploration of Freud s analysis conduces him to the assumption that nationalism and
narcissism are two allied expressions. He says:
A nationalist takes the neutral facts about people their language, habit, culture, tradition, and history
and turns these facts into a narrative, whose purpose is to illuminate the self consciousness of a
group, to enable them to think of themselves as a nation with a claim to self determination. A
nationalist, in other words, takes minor differences indifferent in themselves and transforms them
into major differences (45).
This passage shows that nationalism is a sort of narcissism. Yugoslavs nationalists wanted a nation
where all walks of people in Yugoslavia could live together as one single group. They neglected

Immigrants should be permitted in the United States and deserve equality. Reforms of immigration

The Abortion And Its Effects On The United States
Since 1973, a total of 57,496,011 abortions have been reported to the Centers of Disease Control

They attempted removal of the fetus with a coat hanger also piercing of the fetus with a knitting

The Haseeb Gas field is situated in Lower Indus Basin within the Jacobabad Khairpur high
tectonic structure. The Jacobabad Khairpur feature was developed by domal uplifting during the
Early Cretaceous and later on along deep seated faults in the Late Cretaceous and Palaeocene. The
presence of Jurassic rocks in the area show deposition during rifting. On the Jacobabad Khairpur
high, Eocene carbonates (Sui Main Limestone) are broadly distributed and form good hydrocarbon
reservoirs (Intergrated Petroleum Consultants (PVT) Limited Islamabad Pakistan GSM INC., 2007)
Petroleum Geology: Haseeb gas field structure was outlined by a seismic survey acquitted in 2004
2005. It is a well formed, gently plunging anticline oriented in an NW SE direction. The extent of
the structure is about 15 sq. km with the vertical closure of 69 m approximately shown in Figure 2.
The structure is cut by the two normal faults on the Northern side having 15 20m throw.
The primary target for the Haseeb well 1 was to encounter the Eocene Sui Main Limestone which
is the producing reservoir in the vicinity small and large gas fields, including the world class Sui
gas field at the depth of 1048mKB. The 746m thick Eocene shale dominated Ghazij Formation

The Writing Style Of The Term- Harold And Maude By Colin...
Best Book of the Term Harold Maude
Have you ever read a book that has changed your life? A book that leaves you feeling motivated
and enlightened. Harold and Maude by Colin Higgins does just that. This book is not simply a
quirky love story between two unlikely individuals, but about the power of optimism and a unique
way of living life, a true inspiration. However, besides the storyline, the writing style of the author
has a huge impact in setting the book apart. When considering why the book Harold and Maude is
the best book of the term the fundamentals of the writing style have to be taken into account from
the points of view to the ending which, all play a crucial role in making the reading experience
memorable. First is the use of the third person omniscient point of view. According to the text, in
the third person omniscient point of view, a narrator from outside the story world tells the story.
(WEAL, 45) The advantage of this style is the reader gets a unique perspective of getting to hear
the characters thoughts. For example, ...she listened to the Chopin playing softly. How soothing,
she thought... (Higgins, 2) Here the reader can comprehend the character s, state of mind as she
enjoys the music playing in the background. Unlike in the book World War Z by Max Brooks
where the author has used the epistolary style using the first person point of view that, reveals
action through letters. (WEAL, 46) The disadvantage of this writing style is the reader

Example Of A Difficult Conversation
Difficult conversation #1
What Happened According to the text the what happened conversation is where most difficult
conversation develop from, which is the heart of what is going wrong between individuals. They
may agree on the basic facts but have different interpretations of what it means. We often play the
blame game where we think they are to blame and they think we are to blame. To defuse the
situation the authors suggest adopting the And Stance, which acknowledges that both parties have
different views on the situation but both views matter.
Next, it suggests we should not make assumptions based on intentions, often we tend to jump from
the impact of the situation to the intent without asking for an explanation of why. ... Show more

The Company
Massey Ferguson is a multinational producer of farm machinery, industrial machinery and diesel
engines. The company was formed through a merger between Massey Harris and Harry Fergusson
in 1953. They combined their skills to become the West s largest producer of farm tractors and the
world s largest supplier of diesel engines to original equipment manufacturers.
Massey s farm machinery line consists of tractors, several harvesters and other agricultural
equipment. The industrial machinery line consists mostly of several industrial tractors. Diesel

First, the expansion in the 1970s was financed by debt, much of it short term. This was the reason
for its high (short term) debt value ratio. Although this might have been in line with Massey s
growth strategy, it made Massey sensible for the increase in the interest rates. This increase
resulted in a dramatic rise of cost of Massey s short term debt.
Second, Massey had an enormous amount of debt outstanding with more than 100 banks around the
world which resulted in numerous covenants related to these loans. These covenants hindered
Massey s free access to the capital market. Hence, Massey couldn t attract equity to finance the
company and was dependent on loans. Finally, most of the borrowing from banks was unsecured.
Because of the higher risk of unsecured debt, the loans were more expensive. That is, unsecured
debt leads to higher interest rates. Thus this was also a reason for high costs of debt.
Together with the decline in demand in North America and depressed markets in Europe and the
Third World, these high costs of debt and inaccessible capital market formed the cause of the
financial distress Massey went through.

Repair Shops
Introduction Millions of people each day rely on someone else to repair anything that could be
wrong with their vehicle. Automotive technicians or mechanics provide everyday people with
their skilled hand in fixing cars. The average person takes their car to a repair shop if anything
goes wrong with it rather than tinkering with it. Repair shops have been around since Ford started
mass producing the Model T. The tasks of a mechanicare straightforward with an average salary but
plenty of room to grow in the trade. There are hundreds of thousands of job openings coming in the
near future. From entry level mechanic to master technician all it takes is two years of technical
college and finding a good shop, the road to master technician begins.... Show more content on

According to an article written by Autorepairadvisors(n.d.) the average working hours per week
is fifty or so but can be more towards sixty due to overtime to finish repairing a car in a timely
manner. Working hours can also be less towards forty depending on the place of work. Being an
auto mechanic is an extremely demanding job not just in skill and know how, but also in the
physical aspect of the trade. Some say that as long as the mechanic can lift 50 pounds or more
then that is as much strength that they will need. Which is not wrong, but strength is a lot more
important than that in this industry. According to eHow contributor Thomma Grindstaff
s(n.d.)article Physical Requirements for Auto Mechanics Auto mechanics must have sufficient
strength in their arms to effectively use hand tools like hammers and wrenches and to make sure
that fasteners are properly secured. The stronger the mechanic the more safe he or she is,
because in order to properly and safely handle some tools medium to high amounts of strength
are needed. The working environment of an auto repair shop is only safe if the mechanics keep
it clean, spills such as oil or other fluids need to either be marked for future clean up, or cleaned
right away to avoid slipping. Proper safety equipment should also be used whenever in the garage
or around a work area, items such as safety glasses, and gloves should be worn at all times while
working. Auto mechanics must always try their hardest to complete the repair on any given vehicle
in a timely fashion. As soon as the mechanic is repairing the vehicle they are responsible for that
vehicle. This meaning that they are responsible that the repair is done correctly and that no damage
is done to the vehicle. There isn t much behind the scenes work that auto mechanics do, because
both them and the customer know what exactly they are doing to the

Mother Jones s Impact On Child Labor Laws
Have you ever wondered how some people enact change? Mother Jones protested for child labor
laws. Melba integrated a white high school in order to get rid of racism. Nelson Mandela joined
South Africa s congress to help racism. They all persevered to enact change, but they took
different approaches for their problems. Mother Jones made an impact on child labor because
she persevered to protect children. They way down to the White House just to protect kids.
According to Josephson in Mother Jones: Fierce Fighter for Workers Rights, She and the textile
union leaders would stage their own tour. They would march the mill children all the way to the
president of the United States Theodore Roosevelt. This shows how she got her idea to try to
persuade not only the President but make this issue publicly known. Josephson states, Mother
Jones had seen how dangerous their jobs were. Barefooted little girls and boys reached their tiny
hands into the treacherous machinery to repair snapped threads or crawled underneath the
machinery to oil it. Josephson has a heart for kids, and she just can t stand to see them being
tortured like this. Josephson says, The next night, the marchers slept on the banks of the
Delaware River. In every town, Mother Jones drew on what she did best speaking to gather
support for her cause. Mother Jones had to be strong to carry out her task, and to get her point
across to the people. Mother Jones had to be strong in order to carry out her tasks. Nelson

First Century Judaism
Many see in the first century Judaism a unified or state religion from which Christianity sprung off.
Truth is, looking at Judaism from a monolithic perspective might be the reason why some
understand it to be a monolithic block. Though one cannot justify the claim that Christianity split
off of Judaism as a new religion, it remains certain that the former finds its origin in the weakness
of the latter, a process that happened over a few generations. However, this should not be taken to
mean that Christianitywas originally a simple outgrowth of Judaismunder Jesusbecause the former
can be anything but a different form of Judaism. It is indeed the fulfillment of Judaism.
Conversely to the affirmation that Judaism was not a unified religion, time and documents handed

However, regardless of differences, Judaism as a whole shares some common beliefs with
Christianity.
First century Judaism meets Christianity in their conception of God whom they describe in the
quintessential verbal expression of Shema Yisrael which means that the God of the Bible is not
only unique but also is their God. concurrently, the Jews normally express the physical expression
of Judaism in the way they behave in accordance with the Law of Moses. Also, the concept of
resurrection taught by Jesus was also embraced by the Pharisees in contrast to Sadducees. Despite
these resemblances, the teachings of the first century Judaism were different from the teachings of
the Master in many ways.
One of the many ways Jesus teachings differ from the Jews was on their Messianic beliefs. It is
true that both Jews and Christians were in the wait for the forthcoming of a redeemer from the
line of David whose mission would be to proclaim a day of final deliverance and to establish his
Kingdom. It is also true that Judaism and Christianity completely parted ways when it comes to
both the personality of this deliverer and the way His Kingdom would

10 Business Snapshot 1.1 Hedge Funds
CHAPTER 1
Hedge funds have become major users of derivatives for hedging, speculation, and arbitrage. A
hedge fund is similar to a mutual fund in that it invests funds on behalf of clients. However, unlike
mutual funds hedge funds are not required to register under U.S. federal securities law. This is
because they accept funds only from В®nancially sophisticated individuals and do not publicly
oВЂer their securities. Mutual funds are subject to regulations requiring that shares in the funds be
fairly priced, that the shares be redeemable at any time, that investment policies be disclosed, that
the use of leverage be limited, that no short positions be taken, and so on. Hedge funds are relatively

Note that a company might do better if it chooses not to hedge than if it chooses to hedge.
Alternatively, it might do worse. Consider ImportCo. If the exchange rate is 1.7000 on October 14
and the company has not hedged, the ВЈ10 million that it has to pay will cost $17,000,000, which is
less than $18,405,000. On the other hand, if the exchange rate is 1.9000, the ВЈ10 million will cost
$19,000,000Гђand the company will wish it had hedged! The position of ExportCo if it does not
hedge is the reverse. If the exchange rate in September proves to be less than 1.8400, the
company will wish it had hedged; if the rate is greater than 1.8400, it will be pleased it has not
done so. This example illustrates a key aspect of hedging. Hedging reduces the risk, but it is not
necessarily the case that the outcome with hedging will be better than the outcome without hedging.
Hedging Using Options
Options can also be used for hedging. Example 1.2 considers an investor who in May of a
particular year owns 1,000 Microsoft shares. The share price is $28 per share. The Example 1.2

The Effects of Heroin Addiction
Heroin is illegal and highly addictive. (Dupont, 1997). It remains as the most common drug
among drug, among all the opiates (Lalander, 2003). The opiate is made from morphine.
Morphine occurs naturally in seed pops of various poppy plants. In most cases, it is sold as a brown
or black sticky powder. Currently, purer forms of heroinare becoming more common in the streets
today (Research Council of Norway, 2013).
Many heroin addicts usually inject or smoke it. On average, a heroin addict may inject three or
four times in a day. The intravenous injection has been associated with the greatest intensity by
heroin users. It is associated with an immense rapid onset of euphoria. When smoked or even
puffed, peak effects are experienced after ten to fifteen minutes. Smoking or even puffing, does not
produce a rush effect (Research Council of Norway, 2013)
The United States survey on drug abuse has identified that, 2.4 million People in the country, had
used heroin at a point in their lives (Research Council of Norway, 2013). 130, 000 of them,
reported that they had used the substance a month before the survey. The report estimates that, in
the year 2012, there were around eighty one new users of heroin in the United States. A large
proportion of the users, were smoking or snorting heroin (Research Council of Norway, 2013).

How Did James H. Doolittle Raid

The reports on the abuse and mistreatment of Iraqi detainees by US officials at Abu Ghraib prison
undermined the public reputation and image of the United States across the globe. Domestic and
international opponents of the initial decision to invade Iraq in 2003, triggered criticism of the
current US policies to a profound level. The aftermaths of the invasion had negative repercussions
on the relationship between the two governments. Although, US forces practised persuasion,
diplomacy, and financial aid to support various Iraqi factions. By 2008, these actions were
consistent in faltering the insurgency. As a result, the military and political situations stabilised. By
this stage, President Barack Obama eventually terminated the US military presence in Iraq. Obama
pledged to transfer responsibility for Iraq s future to the Iraqi people and to engage in regional

One of which is the book named the European superpower. The book by John McCormick is all
about Europe being the new superpower. McCormick based his ideas on the economic, political and
cultural status of Europe. It has become a routine for everyone that the United States of America is
the world s last remaining superpower. The nature of power has developed since the Cold War
driven meaning of superpower evolved.
Military power is no longer essential to great power; the author argues that control of the means
of production is more important than control of the means of destruction, and contrasts the
threatening hard power of the United States with the opportunities offered by the soft power
wielded by the European Union. McCormick also argues that the reason why Europe is a
superpower is because the combination of civilian and military instruments in a unique and
unprecedented is giving more advantages over the US in a world in which, as Iraq has shown,
hard power has clear limits and soft power backed by tangible means is a commodity of growing
significance. The European Union (EU) global role is the doubt of most of the current assessments
of unipolarity in world politics and American empire .
McCormick is into the idea that the global economy and the non military actions against security
threats in particular terrorism are more likely to work because they did good in encouraging and

Spanking Research Paper
t appropriate to spank a child? One thing that really bothers me to this day is children who miss
behave and don t act appropriately in a public setting. Maybe it was because I grew up with a
father and mother that were good at disciplining and teaching me right and wrong that it just
bothers me too much to see a child get out of hand and have nothing done about it. One good
quality about my parents when I was younger is that they spent time and focused on being my
parents, rather than trying to be my best friend. I didn t receive what I always wanted and grew to
accept that. It made me appreciate things more throughout my life. I mean I may have grown up

Many reasons why people are fearful of the spanking technique are because they believe it to be
ineffective and dangerous. Some believe that it is only going to produce fear itself into the
child s eye, and only make the child fear his parents rather than understand that there is a reason
behind the spanking. Because of this act of harm some would say, it is only going to produce a
negative effect inside the child s brain and he will use this new found knowledge on other
children. This spanking, explained by experts, will only negatively impact children rather than
producing a better outcome, and will make the child produce a violent behavior of their own
later on in life. While on the other side of the argument, people believe that it if spanking is
properly used and understood by the child, it will be the most effective to repent undesirable
behavior in younger children (not of infants). It s believed that if you take away privileges from
the child, it will only increase their temperament and make them behave even more inappropriate
than before. When children become older then spanking from the parents or family should
become less frequent because the child will understand that there will be consequences for their
own actions taken place. But the spanking shouldn t be used to actually cause physical harm,
because this would be come to known as actual child abuse, rather than actual method to better
increase the actions of the child. All and all I believe that spanking is a proper technique in
disciplining children. Although it s a good to do so it also has to be used in an appropriate
matter, otherwise it could just turn into child abuse. But I believe earth itself is becoming too soft,
and soon one day everything will be dangerous. If it were possible, would you want to live

Analysis Of The Estrangement By Jamaica Kincaid, My Speech...
One s judgement of others is a commonality amongst all people; however, to admit one is wrong
about one s perceptions is infrequent. In both essays, The Estrangement by Jamaica Kincaid, and
My Speech at West Point by Marjane Satrapi in the book The Writer s Presence, the writers make
comment on their life experiences particularly about their bad judgment of others and the impact
that has had on them. Kincaid s essay is about the rough relationship she had with her mother and
how her criticism of her changed after her experience as a mother. Similarly, Satrapi writes about
the pointin her life she began learning one she realizes that the view she had of the people in her

Nevertheless, she accepts her mistake and learns from her experience by acknowledging it, I don t
know anything (Kincaid 249). Ultimately, Satrapi conveys that there not only needs to be progress
in her country, but in her thinking as well. This brings to light how the only way to diminish social
issues, our opinions need to be altered.
Likewise, Kincaid wrongly judges her mother. In her essay, The Estrangement she tells that she
stopped talking to her mother after she spoke unkindly about her in a conversation they had
through the phone. She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not
by her nor her younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often
than not and that the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). In
other words, her mother was unaffectionate to them. A statement she makes evident when she tells
about the time his step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he
would have liked that based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be
dead than spend eternity lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother
for the treatment she gave them. However, later in the text, there is a shift in tone: from hate to
acknowledgement and love. Her perception of her mother changes after she realizes how

Story Of An Hour Irony
Kate Chopin is an American author who composed The Story of an Hour in 1894. The story
depicts a period in time, specifically an hour, when Mrs Mallard experiences a plethora of
emotions after receiving the news of her husband s death. After having time to cope and reflect to
herself while in her room, ironically, Mrs Mallard was pleased with her husband s sudden
departure. Furthermore, she eventually died of heart diseaseafter realizing her husband was in fact
alive. Chopin s incorporation of literary elements such as foreshadowing and irony fostered my

her new found freedom from her marriage. In addition to foreshadowing, situational irony was
present in the story as well. When the doctors came they said she had died of heart disease of joy
that kills (203) which is ironic because after all the false accusations of Louise s husband s death,
she ended up dying instead. I perceived this story to be quite interesting because I could not
understand how Louise could be content with her husband s death if she truly loved him.
From my perspective, I do not perceive Louise s love for her husband to be genuine. What could
love, the unsolved mystery, count for in the face of this possession of self assertion which she
suddenly recognized as the strongest impulse of her being (202) serves as evidence that Louise did
not cherish her memories with her husband, but yearned for and valued her independence.
Considering, this story was published during a time frame when women s rights were suppressed.

When they show up, it is almost certain that death is near. After digging a little deeper, one will
find that Koontz knew what he was doing when he picked this name. It is an old Scottish term
that is now commonly referred to as the bogeyman. In an article written by Matt Staggs, this was
proven to be a fact. He goes to say that Even in Scottish folklore, they can appear as omens of
death. It is the tiny details like this that make a film stand out from others, and Sommers did an
excellent job of creating these scary little monsters. They instill a sense of fear in the audience
whenever they turn up and represent the horror that would soon take over Pico Mundo.
With all the seriousness going on, Sommers somehow manages to throw in a little bit of humor
to keep things light by introducing the dead that linger. For whatever reason, some of the dead
decide not to move on, and their spirits stay trapped with the living. It is always nice to have a
bit of comedy mixed into thriller movies, because then you start to become more relaxed. It is
easier to be caught off guard if you are enjoying yourself, and the best part of thrillers is to not
expect what the outcome will

Psychological Principles Of Operant Conditioning
And through this new friendship they might pick up new things or different ways to commit a
crime, which is also known as the social learning theory. Social learning theory is designed to
explain how people learn criminal behavior using the psychological principles of operant
conditioning (Walsh, 2015, p. 130). As stated above, the new attachment that a criminal has with
his new friends, who are also criminals, will learn new things from these friends. For instance, a
burglar that has been sent to prison and after being released he joins a street gang. Upon entering
the street gang, the burglar might learn different offenses and how to avoid to get caught by the
police. If the criminals do not get caught by the police, then they are going to have better and strong
connections with the street gang members (Anderson, 2016).
According to a study held by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2014), about two thirds (67.8%) of
released prisoners were arrested for a new crime within three years, and three quarters (76.6%)
were arrested within five years from which 82.1% of property offenders were arrested for a new
crime compared to the other offenses. This meant that the people that were arrested for property
crime were more likely to become repeat offenders compare to other people that were arrested for
other offenses, such as drug offenders or violent offenders. The other intersecting fact found in this
study was prisoners the age of 24 of younger were more likely to be

The Year Of Magical Thinking By Joan Didion
The question that we aimed to answer as a class was: what do women want? The class focused
on themes such as desire, family, community safety, and even more, but I feel that the theme that
really appeared in all of the books and films that we studies was the idea of meaningful work.
This is one of the most important things that women want, or that anyone wants, because it is
doing something on a daily basis that means something to you and means something to
somebody else. Meaningful work presented itself initially in The Year of Magical Thinking by
Joan Didion when she discusses in both the play and the memoir the way that she has created an
identity as a writer, as well as the way that she bonded with her husband through their joint
identity as authors. It is also clear in the memoir that she is writing it in order to understand what
she was going through and it is the most important way that she can cope with the horrific
experience. Writing is meaningful work not only because she can share her craft and her
experience to help others, but it her work that makes her who she is. In More of This World or
Maybe Another, we see all of the characters come to and converge in a small laundromat. This is
the point of connection for all of the characters, and it is owned and run by one of the primary
characters. She pours her heart and soul into the laundromat, and she not only makes it a success,
but she makes a place of safety for the people in her community. She works so hard

Vampires Vs Modern Vampires
Vampires are popular in contemporary culture. They are the go to creatures, the phenomenon
people love featuring in tv shows and movies such as The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. They
both show modern depictions of what vampires would be like in this day in age. Though, both
shows embodied the idealism of modern age vampires; they each have their own depiction on how
they should act, look, and how each plot of the show should be carried out. True Bloods
involvement in these elements is what made the show successful, not only that, but they even
explored social issues about discrimination, religion, and equal rights. Each tv show was a success
on its own.
True Blood is one of the most talked about tv shows today. Alan Ball, the creator of the series,
wanted to illustrate these fictional vampires as these lifeless creatures with pale like skin, razor
sharp fangs, and a lust for blood. They are normal in appearance, making it impossible to detect who
they were unless you triggered their inhumane nature. These characters were assimilating with
humanity, trying to disguise their inhumane nature. Whereas in The VampireDiaries, Julia Plec,
writer, and creator of the show, made her characters appear stranger. Their eyes would change
according to their hunger, their pale and cold skin would mimic a dead corpse, and their canine
teeth would go smoothly through warm blooded bodies. The vampires in each show are intended to
appear as humanly as possible, whilst experiencing

Conversely, the theme of divine intervention is manifested in the text and reveals more about the

Why Hamlet Needs To Die
Hamlet s view of death morphs through the course of the play as he is faced with various problems
and troubles that force him to deal with life differently. This holds particular significance for a
modern audience who, unlike the predominately Christian audiences of Shakespeare s time,
contains an assortment of perspectives on the subject. For the majority of the play, Hamletyearns for
death, but there are different tones to his yearning as he confronts death in different
circumstances; from his encounter with his father s ghost to the discovery of his beloved Ophelia
dead in the ground, Hamlet feels an irrepressible urge to end his life. There are obstacles that get
in his way, both internal and external, and Shakespeare s play is an... Show more content on

By behaving provocatively (crazy) and exposing his uncle s perfidy, Hamlet hopes to drive his
uncle murderous once again, so that he can kill him and die a hero. It is ironic that Hamlet uses
retribution against his father s death as the means to reach his own death. His attitude toward the
concept of death at this point is split; he behaves as though his father s death is a bad thing, yet he
seems dead set (pardon the pun) on bringing on his own death through his bizarre and provocative
antics.
Hamlet s antics climax with the visiting players putting on a performance of The Murder of
Gonzago, which Hamlet designs in order to catch the conscience of the king (2.2.610).
Unfortunately, it succeeds too well, and Hamlet finds his uncle alone and penitent, and thus unfit to
send to Hell. This seems a peculiar deviation from the Hamlet earlier in the play who abides by the
Christian code against suicide; in desiring not only his uncle s death, but his damnation as well,
Hamlet takes on a decidedly evil and soulless countenance. One might argue that it is his father s
ghost who imbues this diabolical edge to Hamlet, that Hamlet s face to face experience with the
grave has tainted his spirit (Gottschalk 156). Or, one might also reason that Hamlet s continual
fixation on death, suicide, the dark and morbid

Introduction Over the past several decades, the forces of rapid economic and technological change,
the influx of women and minorities into the workforce, the economic shift to a post industrial,
global economy and an investment market emphasis on short term profits combined to reshape
organizations. Major components of the change included organizational restructuring, the erosion
of employee trust, increasingly greater workforce diversity and the emergence of work teams as
drivers of firm performance. Concurrently, many women in organizations, mostly confined to

I recently witnessed a local football team s coach throw his headset across the sideline and yell
at the ref as the yellow flag sailed effortlessly through the sticky air. I concur coaches need
psychological skills training, but it s unrealistic that they ever will. For the Olympics, it s a
different story. Despite the pride that prevails with Team USA stacking up the medals, our society
continues to plummet further in an uncontrollable descent toward a position where instituting any
type of mental tools and skills training, regardless if certified or not, would be something to
possibly soften or slow the degradation of our country s true soul and character. However, there is
hope with sports academies promoting mental training in young athletes, the curious public wanting
to know why athletes like Michael Phelps listen to music while waiting to perform, university

future legislative as they have no control in that spending so decisions made in past legislations

  • 2. The Strict Liability Theory The Strict Liability Theory Introduction Strict Liability in simplistic terms can imply an individual or company being liable for their deeds, conducts and outcomes that result in damages to others. A personal complaint of injury for a strict liability case is not as a consequence of a foreplanned action or careless deed (Boatright, 2012). The respondent s action should have triggered strict liability and that the complainant suffered harm. In fact, one cannot understand what strict liability in the criminal law means, in the same token understand why it is considered unorthodox and morally dyslogistic. The respondent s responsibility and blameworthiness, or mental fault should be evaluated and, more particularly, the usual relevance... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lastly, the owner knew or should have recognized the animal s specific solicitude (Alabama injury law advisor, 2009). In a case involving a domestic animal, the owner is most certainly liable only if he has prior knowledge that his animal has dangerous behaviors and mannerisms. The First bite rule states that the owner is accountable for the second occasion that his animal bites somebody, but not the first instance it bites. Aberrantly Dangerous Activity Strict liability is a certainty for all such activities that involve more or less so substantial risk of harm in their functionality and performance. If the respondent engages in any array of activities and fortuitously and non negligently causes harm to the complainant, he or she is strictly liable. Must be remembered, this is subject to a few limitations that are beyond the jurisdiction of Strict Liability Theory. Essentially, abnormally dangerous activities include all activities related to nuclear reactors, explosives, crop spraying and many others (CantГє, 2002). At present, for ascertaining the extent to which an activity is abnormally dangerous, the courts focus their emphasis on the following factors. Firstly, the high degree of risk of harm to person or property. Secondly, the attributable gravity of the damage to the activity and whether a party responsible cannot perform the activity with complete safety. Moreover, the limits to which the activity is ... During this period there was political corruptness and tension between the rich and poor. The next day Laborers rallied at the Haymarket to protest the death of their friends and towards the end of the rally an Anarchist within the crowd through a bomb at a group of policeofficers. Black, the defendants attorney, picked up Parson and his wife from an apartment building not far from the court house. Parson had been in hiding since the attack and it was never deserved as to where he went. The police say he went to Arkansas, but it was never confirmed to be true. Parson as well as the other defendants pleaded not guilty to the accusations because the evidence against them was almost extremely weak. Although they prosecutors had little evidence the grand jury convicted the men for conspiracy of murder. It was not hard for the jury to make this conclusion since a majority of the accused men were Russian immigrants, and at the time they were being labeled as terrorist across the nation. Despite being accused Parson and Spies spent the night in a cell together laughing and looking back on how they never gave up on what they believed in. In conclusion, the Haymarket affair took the lives of innocent who were fighting for a better life. The influence that the press and big employers had on society caused the men accused to be convicted without any evidence proving them guilty. Society thought the police were serving justice when their motives were to get revenge. The actions taken by the press, police, and big employers were exactly what the Labor Movement was fighting against, and for that they paid the ultimate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One day Charles hit the teacher while other day he bounces a girl against the see saw. He says bad words and makes another girl say bad word. As Charles behavior gets worse and worse, Laurie s mother, the narrator, wonders how the class could allow a student like that to stay. • 5. Comparing Death of a Salesman and The American Dream Essay Comparing Death of a Salesman and The American Dream In Arthur Miller s Death of A Salesman and Edward Albee s The American Dream, Willy Lowman and Mommy possess the trait of superficiality. Their priorities are to look good and be liked, and this contributes to their misguided paths to reach success. This attribute is one of many societal criticisms pointed out by both authors. Arthur Miller criticizes society for perceiving success as being liked and having good looks. He illustrates society s perception through Willy, who thinks the keys to success are being popular and attractive. Willy transmits this philosophy to his sons by ignoring their education and personal growth and setting an example that popularity is most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bernard can get the best marks in school, y understand , but when he gets out in the business world, y understand, you are going to be five times ahead of him. That s why I thank the Almighty God you re both built like Adonises. Because the man that makes the appearance in the business world, the man who creates personal interest, is the man who gets ahead. Be liked and you ll never want. (pg. 33) Willy is now misleading his sons into thinking good looks will keep them alive in the corporate world and education won t, yet Willy is a man with respectable looks and he isn t surviving in the same world. Fifteen years later, Willy continues to preach the same theory, even after he has seen both his sons fail in the world, having been guided by his words. Prior to Biff s proposal to Bill Oliver for ten thousand dollars , Willy is still stuffing his sons heads with the same misleading advise. It s not what you say, it s how you say it because personality always wins the day. (pg. 65) Willy s final words of advise to Biff are no different than his first and no more educational. • 6. Essay on The Role of Men in Adrienne Rich s Of Woman Born The Role of Men in Of Woman Born Adrienne Rich, via Of Woman Born, has created a wonderfully complex description and analysis of the condition of being a woman in our patriarchal American culture, or at least in the middle class, white portion of it, as she acknowledges in the introduction to the 1986 edition of the book. Since I happen to fit into this category, I find this book to be very personally satisfying, although I can certainly imagine that Rich s writings wouldn t be completely applicable to all women in America. Rich examines the various issues surrounding multiple aspects of being a woman motherhood, relations with men, relations with children, relations with the patriarchy at large, etc. with a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women, as the inculturators of children, have the potential usually unrecognized for using this power to change the society. Reading Of Woman Born has caused me to reevaluate this final idea in ways that I will try to briefly explain. First of all, to say simply that women have the power to change the way they inculturate children, and thus the culture at large, is to deny the reality that women are not one group thinking with one mind about changes that should be made. And, of course, it is very difficult to change your own inculturation and recreate yourself, much more difficult to change the way in which you relate to the larger society. My own beliefs of the power of women had much more to do with some sort of potential that seems to lie untapped, that might be used to change the culture if only women could be unified in their views and efforts in regards to our violent patriarchal culture. The problem I now see in this sort of viewpoint is that it tends to lay the blame for the culture at the feet of women. It provides another source of guilt for the mother, for either not trying to raise her children in a different way, or, as Rich explores, for raising her children to be potential outcasts. Rich refers to this issue of inculturation especially in the chapter titled Mother and Son, Woman and Man. In the context of critiquing my own earlier views on this, section 6 of this chapter seems important. Rich writes here about sons, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Increased size of ventricles has been observed in MRI of a schizophrenic person. However there is evidence that other diseases such as Alzheimer, have enlarged ventricles and therefore this could prove to us that the disease itself did not cause the ventricle enlargement but rather the genetic predisposition, resulting in the enlarged ventricles that could possibly cause schizophrenia or another disease . When the cortical pathway through the nucleus accumbens is disturbed, there will be an increase subcortical release of dopamine, which in turn causes the D2 receptor to be activated. This process will result in positive symptoms of schizophrenia forming. The reduction of the D1 receptor found in the prefrontal cortex together with the decrease of activity in the nucleus caudatus will cause negative symptoms of schizophrenia (dopamine). The dopamine hypothesis is the most accepted hypothesis, yet scientists are still unsure of why there is an excess of dopamine in the body (article 1?).Glutamate is another neurotransmitter that could possibly be a causing factor in schizophrenia. Glutamate helps with learning as well as the encoding of memory. A schizophrenic person will have a lower amount of Glutamate in their body. Dopamine as well as Halucinatnic drugs PCP block the glutamate receptor sites, lowering the amount of Glutamate in the body (Veague, 2007).Acetylcholine function is participates in the movement, automatic function learning and memory in the brain. • 11. Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella... Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The levels of pollution that humans are responsible for has to be monitored so that any danger can be avoided. Carbon monoxide is being studied to see its role in atmospheric chemistry and the ability of the atmosphere to cleanse itself of harmful pollutants (Ichoku). One premise in that argument depends on the claim that it is wrong not to prevent bad if you can do so without giving up anything of comparable moral importance. In the paper, he offers a weaker version of that premise. What is it? Why does he think that stronger version is true? Singer s argument Let s imagine I am in Michael Kehoe s, ready to purchase a brand new suit for $500. As I am about to swipe my card, I see charity volunteers soliciting donations for malaria ridden Africa. They claim: It only cost $250 to save a life from malaria! Suppose this was true and by giving my $500 to charity I would save two people from dying of malaria. However, I only have $500 and will no longer be able to by the suit, if I donate the money towards saving malaria victims. Given this choice, how ought one act, morally? According to Peter Singer, it would be morally wrong for me to purchase the suit, instead of saving the lives. He offers us the following argument: (S1) Suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical care are bad, typically. (S2) If it is in your power to prevent something bad from happening, without sacrificing anything of comparable importance, it is wrong not to do so. Using Freud s analysis, Ignatieff focuses our attention on the relationship between narcissism and aggression. Narcissism is a personality trait that involves arrogant behavior, a lack of empathy for other people, and a need for self admiration. Ignatieff exploration of Freud s analysis conduces him to the assumption that nationalism and narcissism are two allied expressions. He says: A nationalist takes the neutral facts about people their language, habit, culture, tradition, and history and turns these facts into a narrative, whose purpose is to illuminate the self consciousness of a group, to enable them to think of themselves as a nation with a claim to self determination. A nationalist, in other words, takes minor differences indifferent in themselves and transforms them into major differences (45). This passage shows that nationalism is a sort of narcissism. Although this might have been in line with Massey s growth strategy, it made Massey sensible for the increase in the interest rates. This increase resulted in a dramatic rise of cost of Massey s short term debt. Second, Massey had an enormous amount of debt outstanding with more than 100 banks around the world which resulted in numerous covenants related to these loans. These covenants hindered Massey s free access to the capital market. Hence, Massey couldn t attract equity to finance the company and was dependent on loans. Finally, most of the borrowing from banks was unsecured. Because of the higher risk of unsecured debt, the loans were more expensive. That is, unsecured debt leads to higher interest rates. The stronger the mechanic the more safe he or she is, because in order to properly and safely handle some tools medium to high amounts of strength are needed. The working environment of an auto repair shop is only safe if the mechanics keep it clean, spills such as oil or other fluids need to either be marked for future clean up, or cleaned right away to avoid slipping. The aftermaths of the invasion had negative repercussions on the relationship between the two governments. The nature of power has developed since the Cold War driven meaning of superpower evolved. Military power is no longer essential to great power; the author argues that control of the means of production is more important than control of the means of destruction, and contrasts the threatening hard power of the United States with the opportunities offered by the soft power wielded by the European Union. McCormick also argues that the reason why Europe is a superpower is because the combination of civilian and military instruments in a unique and unprecedented is giving more advantages over the US in a world in which, as Iraq has shown, hard power has clear limits and soft power backed by tangible means is a commodity of growing significance. The European Union (EU) global role is the doubt of most of the current assessments of unipolarity in world politics and American empire . Maybe it was because I grew up with a father and mother that were good at disciplining and teaching me right and wrong that it just bothers me too much to see a child get out of hand and have nothing done about it. One good quality about my parents when I was younger is that they spent time and focused on being my parents, rather than trying to be my best friend. Many reasons why people are fearful of the spanking technique are because they believe it to be ineffective and dangerous. Some believe that it is only going to produce fear itself into the child s eye, and only make the child fear his parents rather than understand that there is a reason behind the spanking. Because of this act of harm some would say, it is only going to produce a negative effect inside the child s brain and he will use this new found knowledge on other children. This spanking, explained by experts, will only negatively impact children rather than producing a better outcome, and will make the child produce a violent behavior of their own later on in life. While on the other side of the argument, people believe that it if spanking is properly used and understood by the child, it will be the most effective to repent undesirable behavior in younger children (not of infants). It s believed that if you take away privileges from the child, it will only increase their temperament and make them behave even more inappropriate than before. When children become older then spanking from the parents or family should become less frequent because the child will understand that there will be consequences for their own actions taken place. But the spanking shouldn t be used to actually cause physical harm, because this would be come to known as actual child abuse, rather than actual method to better increase the actions of the child. All and all I believe that spanking is a proper technique in disciplining children. In both essays, The Estrangement by Jamaica Kincaid, and My Speech at West Point by Marjane Satrapi in the book The Writer s Presence, the writers make comment on their life experiences particularly about their bad judgment of others and the impact that has had on them. This brings to light how the only way to diminish social issues, our opinions need to be altered. Likewise, Kincaid wrongly judges her mother. In her essay, The Estrangement she tells that she stopped talking to her mother after she spoke unkindly about her in a conversation they had through the phone. She describes her mother as a person that was seen as nice by others, but not by her nor her younger siblings. She asserts that her mother, said horrible things to us more often than not and that the nice person everyone saw in her was not at all known to us (Kincaid 170). In other words, her mother was unaffectionate to them. A statement she makes evident when she tells about the time his step father was buried next to her mother and her uncertainty of whether he would have liked that based on her and her siblings preferences. She claims, we would rather be dead than spend eternity lying next to her (Kincaid 170). In other terms, they despised her mother for the treatment she gave them. Psychological Principles Of Operant Conditioning And through this new friendship they might pick up new things or different ways to commit a crime, which is also known as the social learning theory. Social learning theory is designed to explain how people learn criminal behavior using the psychological principles of operant conditioning (Walsh, 2015, p. 130). As stated above, the new attachment that a criminal has with his new friends, who are also criminals, will learn new things from these friends. For instance, a burglar that has been sent to prison and after being released he joins a street gang. Upon entering the street gang, the burglar might learn different offenses and how to avoid to get caught by the police. If the criminals do not get caught by the police, then they are going to have better and strong connections with the street gang members (Anderson, 2016). According to a study held by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2014), about two thirds (67.8%) of released prisoners were arrested for a new crime within three years, and three quarters (76.6%) were arrested within five years from which 82.1% of property offenders were arrested for a new crime compared to the other offenses. This meant that the people that were arrested for property crime were more likely to become repeat offenders compare to other people that were arrested for other offenses, such as drug offenders or violent offenders. The class focused on themes such as desire, family, community safety, and even more, but I feel that the theme that really appeared in all of the books and films that we studies was the idea of meaningful work. This is one of the most important things that women want, or that anyone wants, because it is doing something on a daily basis that means something to you and means something to somebody else. Meaningful work presented itself initially in The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion when she discusses in both the play and the memoir the way that she has created an identity as a writer, as well as the way that she bonded with her husband through their joint identity as authors. It is also clear in the memoir that she is writing it in order to understand what she was going through and it is the most important way that she can cope with the horrific experience. They are the go to creatures, the phenomenon people love featuring in tv shows and movies such as The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. They both show modern depictions of what vampires would be like in this day in age. Though, both shows embodied the idealism of modern age vampires; they each have their own depiction on how they should act, look, and how each plot of the show should be carried out. True Bloods involvement in these elements is what made the show successful, not only that, but they even explored social issues about discrimination, religion, and equal rights. Each tv show was a success on its own. True Blood is one of the most talked about tv shows today. Alan Ball, the creator of the series, wanted to illustrate these fictional vampires as these lifeless creatures with pale like skin, razor sharp fangs, and a lust for blood. They are normal in appearance, making it impossible to detect who they were unless you triggered their inhumane nature. These characters were assimilating with humanity, trying to disguise their inhumane nature. Whereas in The VampireDiaries, Julia Plec, writer, and creator of the show, made her characters appear stranger. This holds particular significance for a modern audience who, unlike the predominately Christian audiences of Shakespeare s time, contains an assortment of perspectives on the subject. For the majority of the play, Hamletyearns for death, but there are different tones to his yearning as he confronts death in different circumstances; from his encounter with his father s ghost to the discovery of his beloved Ophelia dead in the ground, Hamlet feels an irrepressible urge to end his life. By behaving provocatively (crazy) and exposing his uncle s perfidy, Hamlet hopes to drive his uncle murderous once again, so that he can kill him and die a hero. It is ironic that Hamlet uses retribution against his father s death as the means to reach his own death. His attitude toward the concept of death at this point is split; he behaves as though his father s death is a bad thing, yet he seems dead set (pardon the pun) on bringing on his own death through his bizarre and provocative antics. Hamlet s antics climax with the visiting players putting on a performance of The Murder of Gonzago, which Hamlet designs in order to catch the conscience of the king (2.2.610). Unfortunately, it succeeds too well, and Hamlet finds his uncle alone and penitent, and thus unfit to send to Hell. This seems a peculiar deviation from the Hamlet earlier in the play who abides by the Christian code against suicide; in desiring not only his uncle s death, but his damnation as well, Hamlet takes on a decidedly evil and soulless countenance. One might argue that it is his father s ghost who imbues this diabolical edge to Hamlet, that Hamlet s face to face experience with the grave has tainted his spirit (Gottschalk 156).
