Tips for Becoming a Thriving Employee
In a recent article in U.S. News & World Report article, Paula Davis-Laack, a renowned author
and founder of the Davis Laack Stress & Resilience Institute, shared strategies to help employees
become thriving members of their organizations. Davis-Laack notes that thriving people are
more valuable employees, experience higher levels of job satisfaction, and report increased
organizational commitment.
Tips for Becoming a Thriving Employee
To become a thriving employee, Davis-Laack suggests that people engage in job crafting , which
involves negotiating new job content and adding meaning to jobs functions. Davis-Laack cites
that research indicates job crafting yields increased work engagement and higher job
performance. Along with job crafting, Davis-Laack states that thriving employees seek
opportunities to learn , solicit feedback from managers, and attempt to develop new skills.
Davis-Laack also emphasizes the importance of working in an environment that balances
boredom and anxiety to create “flow,” a term generated by psychologist Mihalyi
Csikszentmihalyi.
