Tidal energy harnesses the kinetic and potential energy of tides to generate electricity. There are two main methods - tidal barrages which use dams across bays and tidal current turbines placed in tidal currents. While tidal barrages have more established technology, tidal turbines avoid large structures and can capture energy from both ebb and flood tides. Tidal energy has potential for clean power generation but development faces challenges of high construction costs and environmental impacts.
