Maoism was the ruling ideology of China from 1949 to 1975 under Mao Zedong. A 1950 propaganda poster depicted a happy family enjoying life under Mao's image with the caption "Chairman Mao gives us happy lives." In 1989, students from the Central Academy of Fine Arts erected a statue called "The Goddess of Democracy" in Tiananmen Square during protests. Estimates of the deaths that resulted from the Chinese government's response to the protests range from hundreds to thousands.
