Thomas More was an English politician, writer and Catholic martyr born in 1478. He wrote "Utopia" in 1516, describing an imaginary island nation with an ideal government and social system. The book criticized England's social problems and advocated principles like common ownership, equal rights and education. More refused to acknowledge King Henry VIII as head of the Church of England and was executed for treason in 1535. "Utopia" later influenced many socialist thinkers and political philosophers.
