Have you been a software developer in the past and turned your attention to other things, only to lose your edge as a developer? Or perhaps you never had the opportunity to learn how to develop software?
This talk will present some ideas and experiments that have helped teams to build their technical skills that can be introduced, regardless of level of technical expertise you may have. You may also learn more about the teams and organisation, along with a few extra things!
Presented at the Global Scrum Gathering in Vienna, Oct 2019.

Data Con LA 2019 - How to Teach an Old Firm New Tricks by Amarita NattData Con LA
One of the first tasks data scientists face is helping their firms update their tools and infrastructure to meet current technology standards and attract talented employees. Sometimes companies are already heavily invested in existing frameworks and are reluctant to change. Using my experience introducing R, Python, AWS, and SQL to my firm, I discuss several cases of how to identify potential points of entry for new tools and techniques, how to engage key stakeholders in open conversation about moving to unfamiliar platforms, and how to ease the transition and adoption of these tools.
Introduction to Primary Market ResearchElaine Chen
In this talk, we follow the early journey of Aavia, an MIT femtech startup, and learn how they used best practices to conduct primary market research in three areas: Discovery research, solution research, and willingness to pay. We wrap up the session with an in-class exercise to practice the technique of open ended interviews.

Trick Out My PowerPoint Episode 1 (Original)Brian Washburn
"Trick Out My PowerPoint" is a blog series illustrating how non-graphic designers can still create visually appealing slide decks to engage their audience. This deck includes a set of slides used in a presentation in November 2008. "Trick Out My PowerPoint Episode 1 (Sample 1)" and "Trick Out My PowerPoint Episode 1 (Sample 2)" provide two different examples of what could be done to improve upon this series of slides.

No matter if you just have colleagues or organize people as a team lead or senior developer: There are some mechanics that apply to any mentally healthy human being and that have to be taken into consideration when you want to achieve good results as a team. This talk tries to give you a easy but valid introduction to some scientific findings about the nuts and bolts of brains and souls of the biggest investment your company probably has made: your teams.

Collaborative Information Architecture (ias17)Abby Covert
You’ve worked hard on the information architecture models you’ve created but haven’t been able to sell them to the client, or your co-workers. Maybe the conversation around the IA has broken down into an unhealthy debate over semantics. In another scenario, you are tasked with creating a controlled vocabulary for a large organization that has a silo mentality and a lot of legacy content. Where to begin?
These scenarios will sound familiar to most IA professionals.
In this workshop, Abby will share her techniques for getting an organization that may have different ideas about how to organize and name content to agree upon a controlled vocabulary.
Abby will share specific tools in the form of diagrams, beyond the ubiquitous sitemap and wireframe, which communicate complex ideas. And she’ll share techniques for practicing information architecture with clients collaboratively.
I want to focus on the soft skills that make someone good at IA. So the lessons here are really about leveling up in skill set. Including:
- Conflict Resolution in IA
- Selling IA to others in your organization
- Improving stakeholder interviews
- Facilitating Low Fidelity Conversation about language
- Visualizing language with simple pictures to get clarity
Losing good people during your transformation? Getting more resistance than you expected? You may be producing unwanted reactions in the way you are leading your people through change.
If you want your Agile transformation firing on all cylinders without the harmful side-effects, managers at all levels should focus on becoming Catalysts. Much like a chemical catalyst, your job is to help boost or

Governance is a struggle that many organizations face. Getting the business to take ownership for the governance, figuring out what part of the governance is most needed, and figuring out how to get buy in are all common problems. In this session you'll get practical advice for how to move your governance forward - even if not everyone is bought in. Join us for a session about what you CAN do with governance - instead of what you can't.
These slides walk you through:
* How to identify people you should be meeting
* How to build reciprocity into every encounter
* How to maintain and nurture an established network

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Large Language Models and the End of ProgrammingMatt Welsh
Talk by Matt Welsh at Craft Conference 2024 on the impact that Large Language Models will have on the future of software development. In this talk, I discuss the ways in which LLMs will impact the software industry, from replacing human software developers with AI, to replacing conventional software with models that perform reasoning, computation, and problem-solving.
Providing Globus Services to Users of JASMIN for Environmental Data AnalysisGlobus
JASMIN is the UK’s high-performance data analysis platform for environmental science, operated by STFC on behalf of the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). In addition to its role in hosting the CEDA Archive (NERC’s long-term repository for climate, atmospheric science & Earth observation data in the UK), JASMIN provides a collaborative platform to a community of around 2,000 scientists in the UK and beyond, providing nearly 400 environmental science projects with working space, compute resources and tools to facilitate their work. High-performance data transfer into and out of JASMIN has always been a key feature, with many scientists bringing model outputs from supercomputers elsewhere in the UK, to analyse against observational or other model data in the CEDA Archive. A growing number of JASMIN users are now realising the benefits of using the Globus service to provide reliable and efficient data movement and other tasks in this and other contexts. Further use cases involve long-distance (intercontinental) transfers to and from JASMIN, and collecting results from a mobile atmospheric radar system, pushing data to JASMIN via a lightweight Globus deployment. We provide details of how Globus fits into our current infrastructure, our experience of the recent migration to GCSv5.4, and of our interest in developing use of the wider ecosystem of Globus services for the benefit of our user community.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
