2. Thingclash is a framework for considering
cross-impacts and implications of colliding
technologies, systems, cultures and values
around the Internet of Things.
Thingclash
3. Project Objectives
• To provide a platform for collection of and collaboration around critical
analysis of the IoT
• To find and make legible friction points not only at a technology level,
but more importantly at social, economic, and policy levels as well
• To turn this understanding of the landscape into tools useful to
technologists, product and service designers, developers, researchers,
policy makers and others as they create a more sustainable IoT
• To roll all of this into a broader framework for understanding how the
IoT can best fit into the world.
Thingclash
12. Frictions/Clashes
• Social (behaviors, habits)
• Technical (connections, APIs)
• Business (ecosystems, ownership)
• Values (desires, fears, aspirations)
Thingclash
13. Things + Situations + Users
• Motion Tracker /High Status Person
• Self-driving vehicle / Single Parent
• Connected Training Gear / Dependent
• Sex Toy / Person with Disability
Thingclash
14. Interesting Insights
• Situation complexity emerges quickly
• Appropriation and adaptation do too
• Who is in control, and in what situations?
• Context is experience
• Boundaries are easily crossed / how do we define
and make them legible?
Thingclash
15. How do we create more flexible, adaptive
products, services, systems?
Thingclash
16. Collaborate with us
• Extend the toolset(s) for exploring and modeling IoT
in the world.
• Add your point of view
• Add to the Critical IoT Reading List
• Host workshops
• Suggest other activities or adventures
