TEMPLE TOWN - Madurai and Omkareswar, India
Madurai is an important city in Tamil Nadu known as the "Athens of the East" and "Temple City". It was originally the capital of the Pandyan Kingdom and has a long history dating back to the 3rd century BC. The city developed around the Meenakshi Temple complex located at its center, following the traditional Indian town planning system of concentric streets leading to the temple. Over time the city boundaries expanded through different periods of rule. The historic core still maintains the traditional street pattern and settlement hierarchy centered around the temple.

The project aims to serve underprivileged communities by providing services and seeing humanity in every individual. It focuses on Ramapir No Tekro, the largest slum in Ahmedabad with people from scheduled castes and Potter families. The multi-purpose activity center serves as an informal school, provides evening education for adults, and serves as a training center. The 1200 sqm site is located next to existing community centers. The architect designed the building using sustainable and locally sourced materials like fly ash bricks, glass and plastic bottles, recycled wood and more to provide vocational training and community services while empowering people economically.

Castro Cafe was one of the first cafes in Delhi to serve Continental cuisine. It was designed by Romi Khosla to be an open, airy space that brought the outdoors in.
The cafe had a central courtyard with plants and trees, allowing natural light and ventilation to flow through. Large windows opened the interiors to the courtyard.

The project aims to serve underprivileged communities by providing services and seeing humanity in every individual. It focuses on Ramapir No Tekro, the largest slum in Ahmedabad with people from scheduled castes and Potter families. The multi-purpose activity center serves as an informal school, provides evening education for adults, and serves as a training center. The 1200 sqm site is located next to existing community centers. The architect designed the building using sustainable and locally sourced materials like fly ash bricks, glass and plastic bottles, recycled wood and more to provide vocational training and community services while empowering people economically.

Coral reefs face mounting challenges, with many reef ecosystems now in the worst condition since scientists first donned diving masks. Reef Ecologic was established as a non-government organization to facilitate public-private partnerships necessary to address the challenges of contemporary coral reef management and sustainable development. In this seminar we will provide an overview of some of our recent work in Australia and overseas that will be of interest to staff of the GBRMPA, including coral bleaching surveys, tourism infrastructure assessments, assisted reef recovery at Magnetic Island, code of practice for recreational fishers, the Reef Manager’s Guide to Fostering Community Stewardship, management and leadership training for coral reef managers and strategic advice for Reef Trust investments.

The experience n these countries indicate that the growth of the fishing sector stimulates the development and employment in related industries which contribute significantly to the total economic growth of the country. Besides providing direct employment, the Industry is also an income generator as it supports canneries, processing establishments, gear and equipment manufacturers, boat yards, refrigeration and ice making plants, and transport services in addition to those working in governmental and private fisher based institutions.
