2. The Philippines had experienced a very hot summer season in
2012, according to the nation’s weather bureau, the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical services
Administration, the average daily temperature in April 2012
soared from 35oC to 39oC.
During these days, what would be the best clothing to wear?
What you decide on would depend on what “35oC” means to
you.
What does it mean exactly? What does a hot day really mean?
3. Thermal Energy and Matter
• Atoms are tiny particles that made up all matter. It is constantly
moving, which means they have energy. This type of energy is called
kinetic energy, or any form of moving energy.
• Thermal energy is the total kinetic energy of the atoms that make up
matter.
Ex: boiling water has higher kinetic energy because the particle
moves faster than a lukewarm water. Hence, boiling water has a higher
thermal energy than lukewarm water.
• Heat – transfer of thermal energy from higher to lower temperature.
4. Number of Particles in Matter
500 mL 70OC water 2 L 70oC water
Which has a higher thermal energy?
A B
5. Temperature
- the measure of the hotness or coldness of matter.
• Hot and cold are used to describe the temperature of a matter.
• Having a lot thermal energy leads to the hotness of the object, low
amount of thermal energy results to the coldness of the object.
• Ex: boiling water
6. • Thermometer – instrument used to measure temperature.
Scale – printed side of the
thermometer. It serves a guide for
measuring temperature.
7. At 0 K the atoms stop to move, therefore it is the last scale for Kelvin alos
called as absolute zero.
