TUTOR
Ms. Jaqurliyn Ann See Peng
Intro to the project:
In a group of 4 students, a specific empty land is to be found to initiate a small
construction project. The size of the land is to be between 50mx 50m(2500
squaremeters) to 50mx 70m(3500 squaremeters). Individually, a proposalis to
be made on a projectthat serves any one or a combination of two of the
following purposes.
1. Recreation area
2. Commercial area
3. Industrialarea
4. Agriculturalarea
5. Tourismarea
6. Residential area
INDIVIDUAL PROPOSAL
Proposal/Suggestion:
Repurposethe empty land into a recreational area.
Specific purpose:
Recreational Park
Reasoning/Rationale:
Based on the contextual studies of the surrounding area of the site, it showed
that the residential area where the site is located lacked a proper recreational
area for residents to spend their leisure time. Thus, the construction of a
recreational park would most likely proveto be an appropriateas well as
beneficial to the residents around the site as well as bodies in the neighboring
communities. Not only that, the park could also be used for the residents or other
parties to hold events during special occasions. For instance, the nearby
businesses could usethe open area to hold their corporate events.
Concept:
The concept of the park is to providethe residents the possibility to performas
many recreational activities as possible within the given spacewhile at the same
time, maintain the beauty of nature and avoid the area frombeing too
overcrowded.
Estimated cost of the land:
RM 11,603,592
Elements of the site:
- Semi-basketballcourt
- Multi-purposeopen area
- 22 car park lots
- 14 motorcycle parking lots
- Jogging track (2mwide)
- Small man-made lake
- Small fish pond
- Mini river (connecting lake to pond)
- 28 park benches
- Mini- convenience store
- Oak trees
- Artificial rocks
- Shrubs
- Cement flooring (parking)
Semi-basketballcourt
The semi- basketball courtwill be positioned in the
top left of the site. The baseof the basketballcourt
will be made fromcement, with a layer of rubber to
give the courtits needed grip. The colours of the
court, such as the lines, base colours and etc. is
determined by the rubber. Therefore, the colour will
most likely not fade and would be able to last for a long period
of time. The basketball courtwould also be bordered by a
stainless steel perimeter fencing, as well as a small gate-door.
The court would be equipped with the Goalsetter 72”
AdjustableGlass Backboard and HD Breakaway Rim
Multi-purposeopen area
The park would havetwo open spaces that could be used for multiple purposes.
One of the spaces is located near the top right of the site, surrounded by oak
trees, while the other is next to the lake. Both areas are equipped with park
benches, the one on the top right surrounding thejogging track. The other area
has benches along the lake. The area is large
enough for severalspace-consuming
activities such as tai chi, yoga and etc.
Parking Spaces
The parking would have22 car lots and also a motorcycle
section that would be able to fit 14.
Jogging Track
The jogging track is a 2 meter wide pathway
that gives enough room for both strolling in
the park as well as jogging. Its baseis
professionaltrack material, ensuring that grip
will not be a problem and would proveto be
safer as the probability of slipping is greatly
reduced. The
jogging track would go around part of the small
man-made lake, going over the river three times
with assistancefroma concrete bridge, passing by
the small fish pond. Joggers and strollers alike
would be guaranteed a relaxing view while
journeying through the jogging track.
Small man-made lake
The small man-made lake would havethe jogging
track partially alongside it and several artificial rocks
at the mouth of the river. There are a total of six
park benches. Insidethe lake is a variety of different
species of aquatic animals, ranging fromturtles to
your basic koi fish.
Small fish pond
Located on the bottom right of the site is the fish
pond. The fish pond is designed to look as natural
as possible and almost half the perimeter of the
pond is aligned by artificial rocks as well as two
benches overlooking the pond.
Man-made river
A river represents a water-filled pathway that connects the
lake to the fish pond. Here, onlookers would be able to see
the fish swimming fromthe lake to the pond. Three bridges
are laid over the river to allow joggers and strollers to cross
the river safely. There are no safety fences surrounding the
river, so the beauty of the river is not only limited to the
eyes.
Mini conveniencestore
This mini store is located next to the basketballcourt and near the jogging track.
The store is strategically place so that people using the basketball courtwould
have convenient access to the store whenever they feel they needed a
refreshment, samepurposegoes to those using the jogging track. The concept of
the storeis somewhatlike a hut in a Hawaiian beach.
PROS:
- Providea proper recreational area for the residents
- Can be used as a formal gathering area for residents
- Can be used as an area for residents to hold special events
- The educational institutes nearby can hold their co-curricular events
- Business areas nearby can usethe park to hold their corporateevents
- Providemore job opportunities to the community
- Helps increasethe value of nearby properties
- Provides pleasureto viewing eye
ELABORATION:
The contextual studies show that the residential area where the site is
located does not have a proper park, let alone a recreational park, where
residents and other parties can spend their leisure time. The construction of this
recreational park would then providethe community a proper recreational space
that has been missing. Other than that, the park can be used as a formal gathering
area for the residents. For example, the neighbourhood community could
formally introduce the park as a gathering area if an emergency were to occur.
Other than that, residents can also use the park as a venue for personalevents
during special occasions such as birthdays and so on. The usageof the park is not
limited to only the residents as businesses fromthe nearby industrial area could
also usethe area to hold their corporate events. Not only that, the educational
institutes located nearby could usethe area for their co-curricular activities and
sports events. Other than providing more facilities to the residents and parties
alike, the park would also providemore job opportunities as staff would need to
be recruited in the new park, such as security guards, gardeners, cleaners and also
staff to manage the mini-convenience store. Moreover, the construction of the
site would also e=benefit the residential area by raising the value. Lastly, after the
completion of the park, it would bring pleasureto the viewing eye as compared to
the empty plot of land previously.
CONS:
- Traffic congestion may occur
- Lack of car parks may causeoccupants to park illegally
- Nearby residents may experience disturbances if the area is used during the
night
- If maintenance is poor, occupants may get injured
- If maintenance of water features are poor, residents nearby may
experience discomfortthrough bad odour
- New vegetation planted could be a potential breeding ground for
mosquitoes and possibly other pests.
ELABORATION:
The construction of the residential park would bring benefits to the
residents nearby but it would also bring some negative effects. Oneof which
would be that the road may startto get congested by traffic due to the increasein
vehicles entering the area. Moreover, if the car park is insufficient and people still
decide to use the park, it may lead to illegal parking outside the site area, once
again contributing to the potential traffic congestion. Residents living opposite
the park may experience somedisturbances if the area is used during the night.
The situation, however, depends on the event held as well as the situation at
hand. Other than that, if the maintenance of the park is poor, it may lead to
severalnegative effects. For example, if the jogging track is not properly
maintained, occupants may get injured. Another example would be when the
water features are not properly maintained. Poor maintenance of the water
features could lead to pungent odours disrupting nearby residents and at the
worstcase, may even lead to the destruction of nearby lawns as the water
features are interconnected with the soils nearby. Lastly, the plantation of
additional vegetation could be a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes and
other pests.
