The Himalayan region contains various forest types depending on altitude, while southern India has extensive rainforests. Different regions also have unique plants like cacti in the deserts and trees in the tropical forests. India is also home to over 500 mammal, 2000 bird, and 500 reptile and amphibian species, though many are endangered due to habitat loss and poaching. The government has established numerous wildlife parks and sanctuaries to help protect endangered species and their habitats.
The Cloud Forest - A Walk in a Tropical Forest
Recently, we were fortunate to visit one of these virgin Cloud forest in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia. Most of the photos for Powerpoint were taken during our visit. The climate there is so wet that most of the surfaces were covered with mosses. The places is dripping with water. One surprising thing was that because it is so high up there were no mosquitoes and I did not see any insects either. There were nothing crawling about. But the experience is really worthwhile. They built a walkway for the visitors, so we are always above the forest floor. It also allowed us to walk amongst the ‘canopy’ of the forest.
One cannot but impressed with the diversity of plant life there. On a single tree trunk can harbour many species of plants. It is a profusion of plant life, rather chaotic, tangled and overwhelming.

NASBR 2015 (North American Society for Bat Research) conference in Monterey, CA. Olfaction is a primary sense used for food detection in plant-visiting bats. Olfactory receptors are diverse family of genes that code for odorant detectors in mammals. However, the relationship between dietary specialization and olfactory receptor repertoires remains unknown. New World Leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) have evolved adaptations to exploit plant resources, and many lineages are plant specialists. Recent analyses suggest the primarily frugivorous subfamily Stenodermatinae has a distinct olfactory receptor repertoire compared to insectivorous species, but there is no work to date examining whether species that specialize on particular plant genera also have more specialized olfactory receptors. We sequenced the olfactory receptor repertoires of three species of Carollia, a bat genus that varies in its dietary specialization to the soft fruits of Piper plants. We compared the olfactory receptor repertoires and the function of orthologous receptors among Carollia species that vary in their degree of specialization on Piper. The most dedicated Piper specialist, Carollia castanea, had a unique set of olfactory receptors not shared by the two more generalist species. These unique receptors potentially enable castanea to detect its primary resource to an extent that the other species cannot. This suggests relaxed selection on receptors in species with more specialized diets, and purifying selection in more generalist species that would maintain the ability to detect a wide range of odorant molecules.

New World Leaf-nosed bats (Phyllostomidae) have evolved adaptations to exploit plant resources, and many lineages are plant specialists. Recent analyses suggest the primarily frugivorous subfamily Stenodermatinae has a distinct olfactory receptor repertoire compared to insectivorous species, but there is no work to date examining whether species that specialize on particular plant genera also have more specialized olfactory receptors. We sequenced the olfactory receptor repertoires of three species of Carollia, a bat genus that varies in its dietary specialization to the soft fruits of Piper plants. We compared the olfactory receptor repertoires and the function of orthologous receptors among Carollia species that vary in their degree of specialization on Piper. The most dedicated Piper specialist, Carollia castanea, had a unique set of olfactory receptors not shared by the two more generalist species. These unique receptors potentially enable castanea to detect its primary resource to an extent that the other species cannot. This suggests relaxed selection on receptors in species with more specialized diets, and purifying selection in more generalist species that would maintain the ability to detect a wide range of odorant molecules.

Gurgaon was supposed to be the model city that would emerge on the outskirts of Delhi to provide all of India with an example of what the future of business and development in India should look like. The rapid growth and development of Gurgaon was initially praised and applauded as it seemed that Gurgaon was creating jobs, developing industry, and attracting significant foreign business investment from major companies like Citibank, Motorola, IBM, Oberoi, Trident and Westin.
However, the rapid rise and development of Gurgaon also created issues including inadequate sanitation services, lack of adequate water supply, and a lack of oversight to protect the interests of the poor migrant workers who were lured to Gurgaon by promises of jobs and economic opportunity. The development of the city has been described as “a private sector gone berserk because it was blindsided by greed, successive governments that abdicated responsibility, and apathy on part of the landed gentry.”
Due to the fact that the development of Gurgaon was largely left to the industrialists and private corporations, there has been minimal oversight or regulation of business and manufacturing practices. In fact, the All India Trade Union Congress claims that the significant foreign industrial investment was the result of an implicit agreement between investors and the government of Haryana that union activity would be suppressed.
This has led to an environment in which human rights violations are rampant and the government is complicit in allowing business and manufacturing to continue abusing workers.
