2. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
“Every place has a personality. My task is to make their voice and function clear. In creating ideas through space and form there is a reaction, a personal response. The goal is to create the right harmony within this response. Every project has the ability to exhibit it’s unique voice reconnecting space and form with user and nature. It must inspire even if only on a humble scale. This is the true identity of an areas, it’s form, it’s function, and it’s harmony of response.”

4. While working as a Horticulturist for the City of Cincinnati Parks Division and the Keep Cincinnati Beautiful organization, I learned the influence of garden design on public space through administrative responsibilities, thus leading to a pursuit of a Master’s of Landscape Architecture degree. The pictures to the right are several design examples installed in 2007 and photographed in 2012.

5. I applied this horticultural knowledge to many of the small site plans I designed after receiving my degree. Above are two conceptual planting plans I developed for the City of Toledo’s Public Library System. Below the plans are aerials of the existing sites. The designs were scheduled for constructing in the spring of 2015.

The Village of Whitehouse, a suburb of Toledo Ohio, wanted to rebrand the appearance of their
town. The scope of the project was to design four areas: a roundabout, two gateway areas, and
a small park area with a streetscape on the main boulevard. The large image above is the site
concept that was chosen by the village council. The concept included planting, grading, material
choice, and signage development. The images to the right are scenes from a 3D model/video that I
created for the project.

picture of the small existing park
in the Village of Whitehouse. The
project was phased out into two
main designs, the pavilion and the
park grounds. The images to the left
are illustrations from the 3D model
I constructed for the project. The
scope stated the parameters of the
pavilion and the surrounding area.
The images where created with this
intent.

plan for a for small gateway for the
Village of Whitehouse. The design
elements involved a sign, wall structure,
and planting plan overlaid onto the
existing conditions. The image to the

to better show the material that was
chosen along with the height of the wall
and signage. The design intent was to
fill out the horizontal level of the site.

design involves a sign, wall, and
planting plan overlaid onto the existing
conditions. The image to the left is
a perspective that was to created to
specific detail of the client. A park is
located close to the area and it was
suggested that the sign should reflect
elements of a national parks sign.

In the summer of 2012 I created a living barrier conceptual design for the UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. The design draws upon the natural environmental context and rock outcropping of the Monogahela river, developing an efficient retaining wall system for the corner of the Mercy Hospital campus. The larger image to the right is a perspective of the design. Below are images of the existing conditions and the synthesis of the area. Due to the grading on site a three terraced rock wall was designed to mimic the natural bluffs.
Conceptual Site Plan
11. 10
The terraced rock walls proposed are set in a double helix pattern to guild the eye while also referencing the flow of the river and movement of the wind on site. The two primary objectives of the design are to block the view of the loading dock operations from passersby and provide a visual respite for patients, doctors, and visitors.

Notre Dame Academy is an all girls catholic high school. The design challenge was to create a courtyard area for special functions and a large prayer garden for everyday use. The smaller image above is a relocated statue in the finished prayer garden. The image to the right is the site design of the courtyard and prayer garden.

The city of Port Clinton is a located on the south side of Lake Erie in Ohio. The design task was to develop a boulevard streetscape leading to the lake. Much of the focus was placed on the riverfront located to the south of the downtown, developing a street tree plan, and creating better walkability and alternative transportation throughout the town. The image to the right is a colored site plan.

The NHA building 10 was a small design project that consisted of developing a larger parking lot and accompanying planting plan. Upon development it was noticed there were drainage issues on site. A large rain garden was developed in the middle of the site and circulation patterns were redeveloped to support the design.

Brodie Optometry was a single floor office that was expanding it’s parking area and adding hardscape elements such as a patio and storage areas. The construction document to the right is a sheet from the planting plan. It highlights the understory planting with detail notes and planting plan list.
