The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. Snake
• Denotation
– The denotation for snake could be a scaly,
legless, sometimes venomous reptile. On the
other hand the connotation could be evil or
danger for a snake.
• Connotation
A snake can represent sin thanks to the bible, it can also
be used to represent a sly person
3. Flag
• Denotation
– a piece of cloth or similar material, typically
oblong or square, attachable by one edge to a
pole or rope and used as the symbol or emblem
of a country or institution or as a decoration
during public festivities
• Connotation
– It can symbolise pride and independence in a
country this can also represent unity as a nation
4. Gun
• Denotation
– a weapon incorporating a metal tube from which
bullets, shells, or other missiles are propelled by
explosive force, typically making a characteristic
loud, sharp noise.
• Connotation
– A gun can represent two things depending on the
safety, when on the gun is a warning of danger but
when the safety is off it is a threat of violence.
5. The background for the picture is
pure white liquid with a black
liquid slowly seeping in which
can represent a corruption of
purity or a view being tainted
The character at the front is seen in a
position similar to prayer but with a gun
between his hands, this could be
symbolism of living by the gun or a fighter
fuelled by faith
The black ooze on his left hand
emanates from his wedding ring
and oozes in to the pure white
liquid around it which appears to
taint it, the same emanates from
the claw of a creature dragging the
front character down.
There is a misshapen
creature reaching out from
behind and pulling at the
main character
6. The central character is split in two
with a blade in one hand and a
blacksmiths hammer in the other,
this could be symbolisation of
creation and destruction, however
he isn’t using the blade to strike
down his enemy but instead the
hammer which could be
representing that what he creates
can be used with the intent to kill
There is a rally of
characters behind him
who appear to be the
same species as the one
being struck down but
instead of lashing out
they appear to be
following and standing
in defensive position
prepared to move
foreword and attack
the clouds in the background
appear to be clearing and letting
light in behind the forefront
characters, this can represent
them as good characters in a dark
place
7. A prominent feature of the poster
is the window showing everyone's
reflection. The reflection shows
the characters duality, there is only
one character who you can see
both sides off and his reflection is
the most drastic. The other
character's look relatively normal
aside from the glow in they're eyes
which begs the question of what
they're true selves look like.
Most other characters simply
have they're eyes a different
colour and this makes me
believe that the two
different sides of the
prominent character is a sign
of conflict, as if everyone
else is normal and accepting
of it but in his case it splits
him in two
The costumes of all the
characters look very
formal with a tidy school
uniform, a flamboyant
suit, and a simple waiters
uniform which
represents they're
origins from different
backgrounds and that
they're all relatively
normal members of
society.
The characters on the left of the
central character appear to be
looking at or watching him and
judging from positioning he is
avoiding they're gaze whereas the
woman on the right appears to be
paying no attention whatsoever.
This uniqueness could show her
independence and that she is
another main character with her
own story. The character in the suit
is covering half his face as if trying
to make it seem like he isn’t
staring.
The book is the only
prop in the entire
poster which could
provide some sort of
significance to the
main character such
as a love of
literature.
8. Soundtrack
• Clip 1
– The music from the first clip appears to be for
an action thriller type setting and gives a sense
of unease about the picture as you don’t know
if one of the characters is evil and what is
happening, he could be remotely disarming
nuclear warheads for all we know
• Clip 2
– The second clip feels like a more heart-warming
romantic movie for families it makes the picture
more friendly as you could ask if there is a
budding workplace romance and what will
ensue.
9. Shining
• the film has been re cut to be more appealing with inclusions
of audio from actual romance films added in to it, the actual
films scenes have been put in a backwards order while
removing the horror elements this way the growing loneliness
and isolation has been reversed to people growing closer
together, the clip where the boy is talking through his finger is
a lot more child like without the originals context that he is
possessed.
10. Scary Mary
• For scary mary the audio plays a key part in how they pull it
off as a good realistic horror, as the original relies on joyful
sound effects to give a happy tone to what is happening
however the context of the shown situations has been
removed so instead of a child getting transported up a
chimney to meat some friendly singing chimneysweeps we
instead see a child getting dragged up a chimney by some
unknown force, the lack of context on why the characters look
angry or sad just leaves us with the emotion and that
combined with the music makes it more sinister
11. Stereotypes
Men
• Masculine
• Short hair
• Hard working
• Working late
• Drink in pubs
Women
• Feminine
• Long hair

• Motherly
• Wise
• Aesthetics obsessed

• Railroad and old trains
15. Iconography- Sci-Fi

• Space ships
• Aliens
• Space station
• Wormholes

17. Narrative
• Narrative Definition
– a spoken or written account of connected events; a story.
• Linear Narrative Definition
– Linear narratives present stories in a logical manner by telling what happens from
one point in time to the next without using flashbacks or flash-forwards and then
returning to the present.
• Linear Narrative Film Example
– Dunkirk(2017)
• Non-Linear Narrative Definition
– a non linear film does not follow the straight forward narrative and instead jumps
between events in a different order to how it happened
• Non-Linear Narrative Film Example
– deadpool
18. Clip Analysis
• Throughout a lot of the clip there are far away
pans of the pair and they're conversation which
could reference the metaphorical distance
between the characters as they're conversation
revolves around they're past friendship before
darth Vader became darth Vader, the colour and
lighting of the scene relies on a almost energy
type lighting with dark colours flashing in the
background, this could be a representation of the
physical energy of an evil force.
