This is a set of slides used as part of the keynote address for the Summer Institute for Online Teaching that was presented in May, 2006. A group of 25 faculty from the University of Nebraska met on the first day of what would be a six-week course on learning to teach students at a distance.

Blended learning offers many opportunities for liberal arts colleges to enhance the curriculum, but how can faculty maintain the essential values of liberal education in an educational context combining online and face-to-face interaction? This seminar will examine successful methods and processes for blended learning course design. Examples will include designing online courses from liberal arts values, flipping the classroom, and academic collaboration between campuses. Interactive exercises for course design will help participants leave with a process and next steps for developing blended learning experiences in their own courses.
Blended Learning
Blended learning combines traditional face-to-face classroom methods with online activities and digital tools. It replaces some in-person seat time and activities with purposefully planned online equivalents. Instructors choose methods that suit each activity best to create flexible, accessible learning that leverages the strengths of in-person and online methods. Blended learning is not an opportunity for less work or involvement, but can increase student learning through improved pedagogy, greater access and flexibility, and more cost-effective education when implemented effectively. It allows for human interaction and participation at each learner's convenience across physical and digital spaces.
What About Moodle
This document summarizes Goshen College's evaluation and decision process to switch from Blackboard to Moodle as its learning management system (LMS). It discusses Goshen College's needs, constraints, and drivers. It describes testing Moodle with faculty and students over multiple semesters. But when a course moves online, adapting “traditional” methods simply requires using those methods as a compass. Online education may be the future, but entering the future does not mean forgetting the past.

1) An instructional designer and professor collaborated on designing a professional development course called Teaching Online 101 for faculty new to online teaching.
2) The course was designed using an instructional design process that involved regular meetings between the designer and professor to map out content, activities, and assessments across 5 modules.

Refining Pre-Calculus for Students by using Video Podcasts
Abstract - In recent days students are facing procedural problems in certain subject areas like mathematics. By providing video podcasts which is very short, web-based, audio visual explanation that help us to solve it. A video podcasts covering all fundamental self-study mathematic tools and it is used by students to acquire pre-calculus skills. At last, the result concluded that most of the students used video podcasts which is very useful for their studies. By learning these tools, pre-calculus concepts would be gained.

Herein, I will highlight progress in introducing internet-based technologies into a majors-level introductory biology course. First, we have measured dramatic increases in personal interaction between professor and students as a result of introducing Instant Messaging and online office hours. Most surprisingly, we found that in-person student visit during office hours also increased following the introduction of Instant Messaging. Thus, online student-teacher interactions help break down the barriers that prevent students from seeking out their professors in person.
Secondly, in an experimental section of Principles of Modern Biology II (Bio104), we introduced the use of pre-recorded Voice Over PowerPoint™ (VOPP) to deliver video lectures in place of selected lectures, normally delivered in class. This was run as a case-controlled study involving an experimental section and a control group (traditional lectures). We found that through the semester, student use and perceptions of video lectures evolved, aided by periodic student-led discussions. Comparisons of student performance, both in the course overall and individual exam questions directly covering material delivered by video, revealed that internet-delivered video lectures prepares students for exams as effectively as in-class lectures. SALG surveys also revealed that the majority of students find this to be an effective way to learn course material and many reported that they would often pause, rewind, and even watch the entire videos multiple times.
Lastly, we will introduce how educational modules freely available on Visionlearning.com can be integrated into a variety of science courses to facilitate distance and blended learning. This modular content is easily customizable into a “my classroom” context that incorporates student-teacher communication functions, quizzes, and assessment, if so desired. The high-quality, media-rich, peer-reviewed content is written by experts and can be used as a supplement, partial replacement, or even complete replacement of a traditional textbook.
