was
an
American
DJ
best
known
for
his
decade-­‐long
residency
at
the
New
York
City
night
club
Paradise
Garage,
which
has
been
described
as
the
prototype
of
the
modern
dance
club.
That’s
how
the
describe
Larry
in
the
first
paragraph
in
his
Wikipedia
biography
Larry
was
complex
and
he
was
what
many
may
call
eccentric
some
even
thought
he
was
crazy.
But
wasn’t
that
true
when
it
came
down
to
all
geniuses?
Would
we
even
no
what
relativity
or
the
study
of
it
was
without
individuals
like
Albert
Einstein
or
musically
would
we
have
been
fortunate
enough
to
have
even
heard
anything
as
brilliant
when
Marvin
Gaye
penned
his
What’s
Going
On
classic
if
he
wasn’t
a
little
different?
The
list
goes
on
and
on
geniuses
are
visionaries
who
in
some
cases
they’re
passion
and
vision
is
often
times
misunderstood
by
the
masses.

this
day
in
my
opinion
the
most
under
appreciate
iconic
figure
to
have
ever
been
associated
with
the
music
industry
every
week
I
can
remember
seeing
the
likes
of
everyone
from
Mick
Jagger
Eddie
Murphy
Mike
Tyson
Madonna
Frankie
Crocker
who
especially
frequent
the
DJ
booth
could
be
seen
there
every
single
week.
Everyone
there
to
see
or
should
I
say
witness
musical
genius.
Even
today
how
many
DJ’s
have
their
mixes
in
steady
rotation
each
and
everyday
the
way
Larry
does?
Unappreciated
maybe
a
lot
of
it
was
definitely
jealousy
I
do
know
that
for
sure
and
was
around
to
witness
a
lot
of
it
but
isn’t
that
the
case
always
when
an
individual
has
such
a
gift?
There
are
always
those
who
mean
nothing
but
harm
for
these
type
individuals
and
will
encourage
them
to
do
everything
in
order
to
destroy
themselves,
which
is
normally
the
outcome.
I
am
not
going
to
focus
on
the
negative
today
which
always
followed
Larry
and
the
people
who
sucked
his
blood
dry
like
vampires
until
there
was
no
blood
left
and
still
continue
to
do
so.
But
I
just
want
everyone
to
know
that
contrary
to
what
many
believed
he
was
a
special
person.
He
took
me
under
his
tutorage
to
the
dismay
even
shock
of
many
our
lives
and
worlds
were
totally
different
but
we
had
one
important
thing
in
common
and
that
was
point
blank
music.
He
was
the
best
teacher
I
ever
had
and
probably
the
only
man
who
in
my
entire
life
told
me
exactly
what
he
felt
and
most
importantly
told
me
the
truth
and
always
talk
about
things
of
significance.
Larry
was
like
a
drill
sergeant
when
it
came
to
music
he
expected
excellence
and
his
attentiveness
to
quality
was
immaculate.
I
remember
when
I
made
my
first
record
I
did
something
on
the
record
that
many
couldn’t
and
wouldn’t
even
try
because
of
how
difficult
it
was
the
entire
seven
minutes
of
my
record
City
Streets
on
the
dub
version
I
manually
administered
each
and
every
effect
because
I
wanted
it
to
be
different
every
time,
and
it
reminded
me
of
when
Larry
would
perform
live
at
the
Garage
with
the
New
York
City
Peech
Boys
working
the
effects
during
the
show
live.
Only
two
people
have
ever
mention
to
me
they
were
aware
of
what
I’d
done
the
first
was
Stevie
Wonder
one
night
in
the
Shelter
booth
while
Timmy
Regisford
played
the
record
and
the
second
was
Larry
Levan
himself
the
first
time
he
heard
the
record.
Personally
telling
me
one
day
“this
is
now
my
favorite
record”
imagine
how
I
felt
hearing
that
from
Larry
himself.
Many
years
ago
Larry
shared
one
thing
with
me
I
will
never
forget
and
it's
about
people.
He
said
to
me
while
I
was
on
top
of
the
world
playing
everyplace
I
could
imagine
from
New
York
to
Japan
all
the
number
one
clubs
for
top
dollar
every
single
day
of
the
week.
He
said
“don't
ever
get
lost
or
believe
in
any
of
this
because
they’ll
love
you
for
as
long
as
they
can
get
something
out
of
you”.
And
went
on
to
say
“they’ll
take
everything
you
have
and
suck
you
bone
dry
like
a
vampire”
many
are
well
aware
Larry
had
an
obsession
or
should
I
say
he
was
very
fond
of
the
character
Le
Stat
brought
to
life
on
screen
by
famous
by
Tom
Cruise
in
Interviews
With
A
Vampire.

strangely
towards
the
end
of
his
life
he
became
so
much
like
the
character
he’d
become
very
reclusive
and
would
only
allow
himself
to
be
seen
by
certain
people.
So
many
people
alienated
Larry
Levan
and
it’s
always
very
melancholy
for
me
whenever
his
birthday
comes
around,
and
it’s
especially
saddening
whenever
I
hear
of
how
he’s
celebrated
now
and
was
left
for
day
for
years
by
many
who
celebrate
his
legacy
for
the
material
gain.
When
Larry
Levan
died
I
cried
like
an
infant
and
at
his
memorial
I
remember
crying
so
bad
that
Kenny
who
worked
at
the
Garage
had
to
bring
me
outside
I
couldn’t
believe
how
emotional
it
was
for
me
then
but
now
I
do.
Larry
touched
a
part
of
my
psyche
not
anything
has
been
able
to
he
taught
me
how
to
dissect
my
thoughts
and
to
connect
them
with
an
audience.
Something
DJ’s
aren’t
taught
anymore
and
truthfully
they
might
not
even
care
about.
He
taught
me
that
playing
music
is
like
telling
a
story
it’s
a
journey
all
night
and
it’s
the
job
of
the
person
providing
the
journey
to
tell
a
complete
story.
Meaning
the
ups
the
downs
the
joys
and
pains
bringing
everyone
on
the
journey
and
most
important
it
has
to
make
sense.
I
remember
one
night
at
The
Choice
putting
together
two
records
and
bringing
the
dancers
to
a
frenzy.
I
was
quite
full
of
myself
having
blended
the
records
together
and
sensing
the
energetic
audience
was
very
please
as
well.
Out
of
now
where
Larry
ran
into
The
Choice
DJ
booth
and
in
front
of
a
few
of
my
friends
who
were
probably
standing
there
after
he
ran
all
the
way
downstairs
from
the
top
room
he
yells
at
me
“what
in
the
hell
was
that”.
I
arrogantly
looked
at
Larry
and
said
“did
you
see
that
reaction,
did
you
watch
they
crowd”
he
then
said
to
me
“yeah
I
saw
them
but
tell
me
what
in
the
@uck
does
Never
No
More
Lonely
have
to
do
with
Love
Is
The
Message”
then
he
said
“don’t
forget
tell
the
damn
story
you
got
all
night
don’t
tell
it
all
at
once
pace
the
crowd
and
yourself
you
got
12
hours”.
In
a
nutshell
it
very
apparent
because
in
me
Larry
Levan
Lives
he
taught
me
more
than
music
he
taught
me
expression
tolerance
patience
and
especially
gave
me
vision.
God
giving
gifts
are
meant
to
be
shared
with
especially
those
who
will
be
appreciative
of
them
and
music
was
the
gift
Larry
shared
with
me
and
I
am
eternally
grateful.
