LYRICS:
STARS & SHARDS
LOYLE CARNER
3. INITIAL IDEAS:
Stars and Shards is an upbeat UK hip-hop style song, about
a boy who has gone down the wrong path. The song is
slightly different to others in the same genre, with a guitar
being used within the music, something that hip-hop doesn’t
usually feature. For my video, I visualise a mainly muted
colour scheme to help epitomise the gritty nature of the
song. I want to use mainly outdoor locations for my video,
with estates, streets and a local park being the main ones.
This conforms to the stereotypical videos for this genre of
music. I also want to use woodland in my video to create
something different to what hip-hop music videos are
usually like- focusing on trees and clouds and playing
around with time-lapse. My video doesn’t follow a strict
narrative, however it does follow a very loose one, with a
young man being the main character within the video (hence
the song being about a boy going down the wrong path) and
I will also include a girl who is represented as the boy’s
friend. In my video I am going to edit to the beat, to follow
Goodwin’s theory that there is a ‘relationship between the
music and the visuals’. I’m not going to include any
performance in my video because the character featured in
the video is going to be who the song is about, and this is
not the artist.
4. NARRATIVE & REPRESENTATION
My music video doesn’t follow a strict narrative,
however there is a very loose narrative through
following the main character throughout the video.
As said before, the song is about a boy going down
the wrong path, so I am conveying this in the video. I
am doing this by showing the boy not ever getting
anywhere and still doing the same bad things that
he got into, in all the same places. The use of the
urban street locations help to emphasise this and
highlight the dark side of what has happened to
him. Having a loose narrative such as this will
engage the audience and give the video purpose.
The deep red lighting will help to connote danger
and these shots will be interspersed with the
woodland location that I have talked about.
Through my audience research, I found that viewers like
to watch videos for personal identity purposes, which
means that they can relate to what is happening. The
typical fan of this genre of music will be normal working
class people, so having a video in familiar urban
locations will ensure that the video is easily relatable. As
many of the audience may participate in alcohol/drug
use, seeing a by going down the wrong path will be very
familiar to some of them which helps to give them a
sense of identity. The characters in the video will be
wearing the stereotypical outfits of those of hip-hop
fans, for example hoodies and sports brands and may
be riding about on bikes which will be appealing to the
typical viewer of this genre. This video will represent
adolescence in today’s society.
5. LOCATIONS:
URBAN STREET/HOUSING ESTATES:
This location is very typical of the genre that I am using
for my music video. Many UK hip-hop artists started off
living in built up urban areas on housing estates, making
music in their bedrooms so these locations are ideal for
this type of music. I will film the main characters going
about their day to day life within these locations, outside
corner shops and in the local park and play with angles
when they are higher up e.g. on steps. I am also going to
film part of the video through a fence to really capture
the park location within the video. I want to use the skills
I learned in my test footage and play with extreme close-
ups and close-up of the characters to really convey what
the video is about.
WOODLAND AREA:
Using a woodland area in my video
gives contrast to the other urban
locations that I have used. It goes
against the stereotypical locations
that you might see in a hip-hop
video, and I feel that this works
because the actual song isn’t that
typical of hip-hop songs itself. I want
the lighting to be quite dull in these
scenes, with not too many bright
colours. I might also do some shots
at dusk, to create different lighting
styles. I will follow the main
characters in the film through the
woods and also use shots without
them. I will play with time-lapse when
filming clouds and focus on the trees
within the woods. I’d also like to play
with deep red lighting in some of
these shots, which I talk about
further within the next slide.
Using the urban locations such
as the park (swings etc.) and
having the main character as a
boy, means that the video will
follow Goodwin’s theory that
there is a ‘relationship between
the lyrics and the visuals’. For
example, when the lyric ‘corridor’
is said, the image on the screen
will be of a corridor etc.
6. FURTHER IDEAS:
When researching other music videos, I found an effect I really
liked in the Mura Masa song ‘What If I Go?’. A red lighting was
used which I thought was really effective in the video as it
contrasted well with the other shots. In order to achieve this I am
going to place some red acetate over the lens of the camera to get
a deep red glow effect on the image. With the song being about a
boy going down the wrong path, the colour red helps to connote
danger which I think fits well with the lyrics. This will help to keep
the audience interested. I am going to use this effect in the
woodland shots and also through empty underpasses with the
main character being the only person there. This will create
contrast with the main colour scheme throughout the video,
keeping the audience more interested.
