The wellness way october 2015
1. VOL: VI No: 5 ‐ September 2015
It was back in the late 80’s. One evening I
learnt that there is a talk on Bhagavad Gita
by Swamy Dayananda Saraswathi at the
Jagan Mohana Palace; I had not heard for his
talk earlier. Hence I decided to attend the
same. When I entered the hall, the Swamiji
had just begun his speech. His style was
quite unique and attractive. He was very animated while
talking, gesticulating with the mike in hand. His talking style
struck me and I was glued to my seat.
The talk was on the Essence of Bhagavad Gita. That day he
explained the Gita based on three aspects - 1. Total view of life,
2) the way of life, and 3) the state of mind of Arjuna. Being a
spiritually inclined person, I was clean bowled by the Swamiji’s
talk. On enquiry, the person sitting next to me told me that he
was Swami Dayananda Saraswathi. This is how a Guru and
Shishya relationship between us began in right earnest.
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi is one of the very few spiritual
leaders who were conducting management workshops. Once
he was to conduct an in-house workshop for the Nagarjuna
group on the topic “How to become a contributor”. As a
passionate student, I was interested but held myself back since it
was an in-house program. Swamiji came to know about my
interest and called me and told me, “Pai, you are my guest and
you are coming with me.” This exemplified his affection
towards his disciples.
Once a thought came to me about organising a talk by Poojya
Swamiji on “Health”. I discussed with Swami Chidrupananda
Saraswathi on the same. He said “Swami Dayanand Saraswathi
delivers talks only on Vedanta but you talk to Poojya Swamiji
directly”. When I requested him over phone, he gave me the
topic “Spiritual Health” without any second thought. Later, we
published it as a booklet and got it released by him.
By 2001, I had delivered many talks on Wellness, my passionate
topic. Many of my friends were asking me to publish them in the
form of a book. It was a very difficult job for me as I was not used
to writing. I scribbled down all my thoughts and gave it the
shape of a booklet with the help of my friends. Hesitantly I gave
this to Swamiji - the great vedantic teacher of our times - who
showed interest to go through the same and encouraged me
with the following words:
“This is a well-researched monograph which deserves wide
publicity. This is bound to be the basis for all future programmes of
‘Wellness Management’.
On our Foundation’s request, Swamiji has delivered many talks
in Mysore, namely- “How to reduce stress?”, “The spiritual
vision and way of life”, “Personal Management for Personnel
Management”, “Spiritual Health”, “Vedanta vs. Psychology”,
“Work is Worship” and others.
When I received the information that Swamiji is about to stop
all his medications and would love to renounce his body at his
Ashram in Rishikesh on the banks of the River Ganga, my friend
and I rushed to Rishikesh. On the evening of 28th August
2015, when he returned from the US still in a critical condition,
he conducted a satsang, which gives us the message that we
should perform our duty till our last breath. Later everybody,
including the Hon. Prime Minister Modiji requested him to
continue medication. Swamiji blessed us by accepting our
request. We returned back satisfied.
We got news of Swamiji’s Maha Samadhi on 23rd September
2015. Today he is no more in physical form but he is available to
all of us through his enormous literature, numerous talks,
many thousands of disciples and a team who can take Arsha
Vidya further. Let us salute this great Guru of our times.
We have covered an article on this great soul and hope you
will find it interesting.
Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy
Navarathi. During these nine nights and ten days, the three
forms of the goddess - Lakshmi, Saraswathi and Durga, are
invoked. I always quote in my talks about these shakthis - Ichcha
Shakthi, Jnana Shakthi and Kriya Shakthi. It is the auspicious
time to invoke them.
Wish you a very happy reading....

Mysore and Swami Dayananda Saraswathi
Swami Dayananda Saraswati was a great teacher of
Vedanta and a scholar in Sanskrit in the tradition of
Sankara. Swamiji had been teaching Vedanta in India for
more than five decades and around the world since 1976.
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi - G.Natarajan (his given
name), was born on 15th August 1930 at Manjakkudi, a
small village near Kumbakonam in Tamilnadu. After
completing his basic education, he went to Chennai in
search of employment.
In 1953, a meeting with Swami Chinmayanandaji at his
Jnana Yajna inspired Natarajan to a life of seva and study of
vedanta. He involved himself with Swami
Chinmayanandaji and become his disciple. With the
permission of Swami Chinmayanandaji, Natarajan
studied vedanta under Swami Pranavanandaji and Swami
Taranandaji.
Natarajan became Swami Dayananda Saraswati on
Sivaratri Day, March 4 1962. He was given sanyasa
deeksha by his Guru Swami Chinmayananda.
As a teacher of Vedanta, Swami Dayananda has
established four traditional teaching centres and many
more across the globe through his students, with a
primary focus on teaching Vedanta, Sanskrit and related
disciplines. These traditional teaching centres carry the
banner 'Arsha Vidya' or 'Arsha Vijnana', i.e. Knowledge of
the Rishis. The word 'Arsha' has also been used by many
of Swami Dayananda's students in naming their facilities
to mark their lineage.
The four Arsha Vidya teaching centres that Swami
Dayananda has established are:
1. Arsha Vidya Peetam, Swami Dayananda Ashram,
Rishikesh, Uttaranchal, India
2. Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Saylorsburg, PA , USA
3. Arsha Vidya Gurukulam, Anaikatti, Coimbatore
4. Arsha Vijnana Gurukulam, Nagpur, Maharashtra
Many of Swami Dayananda Saraswati's lectures, talks and
discourses have been brought out in the form of books
and DVDs.
Swami Dayananda Saraswathi
is with us - shall be forever with us
From Natarajan to Swami DayanandaMysore has many memories of Swami Dayananda
Saraswathi who attained mahasamadhi on 23rd September
2015.
Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati was not only an
eminent teacher of vedic tradition but also a great
visionary, a powerful thinker and writer. Though his
contributions were innumerable, the most significant were
establishing Arsha Vidya Gurukulams, initiating All India
Movement (AIM) for Seva, convening Hindu Dharma
Acharya Sabha and setting up Dharma Rakshana Samiti.
Mysore has many memories of this great soul. He was
involved in the renovation of Sri Lakshmi Kantha Swamy
temple at Hebbal Industrial area. His disciple, Swami
Chidrupananda Saraswathi has established an ashram
(Arsha Vidya Kendra) in Hebbal and runs a hostel for poor
children and conducts classes on Bhagavad Gita and
Upanishads five days in a month. Other disciples Swamini
Varada Chaitnya and Swami Chitswaroopananda also
conduct classes on vedanta in various parts of the city.
Poojya Swami Dayananda Saraswathi himself has delivered
many talks in this royal city on many occasions. We recall
here a few of them:
With HH JSS Deshikendra Maha Swamiji
- on occasion of series of talks on “Work is worship”
by Poojya swamiji (February 2006)
Release of the book Vedanta vs. Psychology (February 2006)
3. 3
Release of Monograph (May 2003)
Inauguration of Kalyani at Arsha Vidya Kendra, Mysore (Dec 2006)
Talk at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (December 2006)
With SoM Editor-in-Chief, K.B.Ganapathy and others (December 2001)
At Vijay Foundation’s Office - blessing the little one (December 2006)
At Rotary-Vijay Spiritual Day (October 1999)
Vedanta is a science of personality unfoldment, not
personality development. It revolutionises the inner
being first and thus unfolds the powers that lie within.
Contentment is an inner condition obtained when there is
the fullness of heart. Contentment is a natural state that
comes into being at the elimination of the sense of want.
Flexibility of Mind is what is needed for a man who wants
to learn.
A mind that has forgotten the past and the future, that is
awake to the now, to the present, expresses the highest
form of intelligence. It is alert; it is watchful; it is inspired.
Each man is unique in every respect. His physical, mental
and intellectual make ups are singularly different from that
of the rest of the humanity.
Religion, any Religion is the inner experience of an
individual. As the very word connotes, religion is the
blending of the two - the self and Self. It applies only to the
individual, not to any group, community or nation.
I am only doing Ishwara's work. He has to take care; he
will take care.
Meditation is no action. Rather it begins where action
ends.
