The Stuff you are Made of
By Denisse A. Gabo
“We have met the enemy, and he
is us” – these are powerful words
we may live by from a comic strip
character pogo, a loveable possum
illustrated by Walt Kelly. I’m a big
believer that our worst enemy is
only but ourselves.
So often in life, we tend
to set our eyes upon the
things which we think
could glorify us in the
face of the many.
We long for fame, power, wealth and
influence only to realize at the end of the
road that we have set our sights too far
and miss out on what genuinely makes us
complete. A child sitting somewhere for
instance may wonder when he sees a
plane and wish of becoming a pilot, while
the captain on board sighs as he sees
houses downtown and dreamt of returning
home.
Our worst enemy is our own good self. What
really defines us is the way we view ourselves
and the principles we live by. It is never healthy
to be comparing ourselves to others. Come to
think of it, if authority ensures security, then
people of high profile may walk freely and
unguarded; but only those who love simply
sleeps soundly at night. If wealth is the secret to
fulfillment, then the rich should be happiest; but
even the poorest of us can genuinely be happy
without a lot.
So plant your own gardens
and decorate your souls, as
the light and spirit we bring
with us comes from our inner
self. Walk life gently and never
lose sight of the real you.

  • 19. “We have met the enemy, and he is us” – these are powerful words we may live by from a comic strip character pogo, a loveable possum illustrated by Walt Kelly. I’m a big believer that our worst enemy is only but ourselves.
  • 20. So often in life, we tend to set our eyes upon the things which we think could glorify us in the face of the many.
  • 21. We long for fame, power, wealth and influence only to realize at the end of the road that we have set our sights too far and miss out on what genuinely makes us complete. A child sitting somewhere for instance may wonder when he sees a plane and wish of becoming a pilot, while the captain on board sighs as he sees houses downtown and dreamt of returning home.
  • 22. Our worst enemy is our own good self. What really defines us is the way we view ourselves and the principles we live by. It is never healthy to be comparing ourselves to others. Come to think of it, if authority ensures security, then people of high profile may walk freely and unguarded; but only those who love simply sleeps soundly at night. If wealth is the secret to fulfillment, then the rich should be happiest; but even the poorest of us can genuinely be happy without a lot.
  • 23. So plant your own gardens and decorate your souls, as the light and spirit we bring with us comes from our inner self. Walk life gently and never lose sight of the real you.
