The solar system formed over 5 billion years ago from a collapsing cloud of gas and dust called a solar nebula. As the nebula rotated and flattened, larger objects called planetesimals formed and collided, eventually creating the planets. At the center, the sun formed. The inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are small, rocky bodies close to the sun. The outer planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are much larger and mostly made of gas. Technology like satellites and space telescopes continue to provide more information about the solar system to further our understanding of the universe.
