• Planet, any major celestial body that
orbits a star and does not emit visible
light of its own but instead shines by
reflected light. Smaller bodies that also
orbit a star and are not satellites of a
planet are called asteroids or planetoids.
In the solar system, there are eight
official planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth,
Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and
Neptune. Pluto, once counted as the
ninth planet, is now classified as a dwarf
planet.
A planet moves around the Sun in a definite path
called orbit. The time taken by a planet to
complete one revolution is called its period of
revolution. A planet also spins or rotates on its
own axis. Time taken by a planet to complete one
rotation is called its period of rotation. Out of the
eight planets, five are clearly visible to the naked
eyes. Some planets have their own moon/satellite
that revolve around them.
