The solar system consists of the Sun and everything bound to it by gravity, including 8 planets that orbit the Sun. The planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Other objects in the solar system include asteroids, comets, and meteors. Each planet has unique characteristics such as size, composition, temperature, and number of moons. Earth stands out as the only known planet capable of supporting life.

2. ‘Sol’ is a Latin word , It means the Sun. Solar means all
that are connected with the sun in some way or the
other. The solar system consists of the sun at the
centre, the 8 planets that revolve round the sun & the
satellites that revolve round the planets. the solar
system also includes asteroids , comets & meteors.
Solar system can be defined as the sun together with
eight planets and all other celestial bodies that are
bound by its gravity.

3. The word planets come from a Greek word planetai
which means wanderer. They are celestial bodies that
revolve around the sun in a fixed path called an orbit
They are spherical in shape. They have no heat and light
of their own but they reflect the light the sun.

5. The mercury is the smallest planet in the solar system. It
is also closest to the sun. It has no moon . There is no
trace of water and atmosphere around this planet.
Hence , life is not possible on this planet. Mercury is
named after the messenger of Roman God.

6. The Venus is the second planet from the sun. it is often
called the earth’s twin because of its size. Its size , mass
and density are similar to that of the earth. It is the
brightest planet of the solar system. Venus is named
after the roman god of love and beauty. It has no moon.

7. The earth is our home . It is a unique planet in the solar
system where life is possible. The earth is located at a
favourable distance from the sun. the earth is the only
planet on which water is found in liquid , solid and
gaseous form. It has one moon . It is therefore called
the blue planet.

8. The mars is about half of the earth’s size. Its surface is
red and it is therefore known as red planet. It has
almost the same the same period of rotation as the
earth. It has two moons.

has light and dark bands around it. Jupiter with its 67
moons is referred to as the mini solar system its
average surface temperature is – 100.c.

10. The Saturn is another unique planet.it has bright rings
around its equator. These rings are made of icy
particles.it is colder than Jupiter .it has 62 moons.

11. The Uranus was discovered in 1781 by william hershchel
.According to NASA, it has 27 moons. Uranus also has
rings around its equator . It is named after the Greek
god of sky.

. These to planets are called the twin giants. Neptune is
named after the roman god of sea.

planet- like small bodies revolve around the sun along with
