This report clearly details the complex challenges facing young people across the Arab world. Among these great challenges is employment — or the lack of it.
The MENA region faces one of the highest rates of youth unemployment and underemployment in the world. Creating the required number of new jobs over the next two decades will be monumentally difficult. Even more young people have been forced into unemployment, low-quality jobs, and living “on the margins” as a result of the weakened global economic climate.
The global economic crisis hits the MENA region at a time when the youth share of the total population is at a high point, with nearly one-third of MENA residents between the ages of 15 and 29.

President & CEO of the Connecticut Technology Council (CTC), a trade association and public policy group dedicated to stimulating the growth of the state’s innovation economy. It manages the state’s “innovation ecosystem” under a contract and also produces over 50 programs and events as well as numerous policy reports and advocacy position papers each year.
Previously, he was Executive Vice President & COO of Netkey, Inc, a software firm which raised over $20 million in VC funds and was eventually acquired by NCR. In 1983, He became the founding VP of the Science Park Development Corporation, an incubator complex affiliated with Yale University. He left Science Park to become the president of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce and the affiliated Regional Leadership Council.
Before Science Park he was publisher of the national policy magazine The Washington Monthly, a reporter for Fortune Magazine, a staff director for a committee of the Connecticut State Legislature and worked for the late U.S. Senator Abraham Ribicoff (D-CT).
Matthew is a graduate of Columbia College (AB) in the City of New York, the Yale School of Management (MPPM aka MBA) and is a graduate of the Center for Creative Leadership in North Carolina.
He lives in New Haven with his wife, Marian Chertow, professor of Industrial Ecology at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and his two daughters. Among various volunteer activities Matthew is chairman of the New Haven Parking Authority, has been on the Connecticut United Way Board and a member of the Connecticut Transportation Strategy Board.

This tutorial, offered at the 10th International Conference on Web Engineering, presents the peculiarities of advanced Web search applications, describes some tools and techniques that can be exploited, and offers a methodological approach to development. The approach proposed in this tutorial is based on the paradigm of Model Driven Development (MDD), where models are the core artifacts of the application life-cycle and model transformations progressively refine models to achieve an executable version of the system. Abstract: Despite the strides made recently for women in business, female tech professionals continue to be outpaced by their male counterparts. According to Silicon Valley Bank’s Innovation Economy Outlook survey, less than 50 percent of technology companies have women in the C-suite or serving on the board of directors. Only 19 percent of CIO positions for Fortune 250 companies are held by women.
In fact, the gender disparity among technology professionals seems to be increasing in spite of recent gains throughout the workplace. Fewer women are joining the tech workforce and the numbers of female students studying technology is in decline—today only 18 percent of computer science majors are women, compared to 37 percent in the mid-1980s. Add in a continued wage imbalance and a high turnover rate for female tech professionals mid-career and it is clear that there is work to be done. How can we encourage more women to join the technology field and insurance technology in particular? What can be done to break down the barriers to success as a female technology professional?

Strategy and Empowering the Third Billion Full ReportDr Lendy Spires
Nearly 1 billion women around the world could enter the global economy during the coming decade. They are poised to play a significant role in countries around the world—as significant as that of the billion-plus populations of India and China.
Yet this Third Billion has not received sufficient attention from governments, business leaders, or other key decision makers in many countries. There is compelling evidence that women can be powerful drivers of economic growth. Our own estimates indicate that raising female employment to male levels could have a direct impact on GDP of 5 percent in the United States, 9 percent in Japan, 12 percent in the United Arab Emirates, and 34 percent in Egypt; but, greater involvement from women has an impact beyond what their numbers would suggest.
For example, women are more likely than men to invest a large proportion of their household income in the education of their children. As those children grow up, their improved status becomes a positive social and economic factor in their society. Thus, even small increases in the opportunities available to women, and some release of the cultural and political constraints that hold them back, can lead to dramatic economic and social benefits. In that context, a critical question of the 21st century becomes: What can governments, companies, investors, and NGOs do to ensure that the Third Billion realizes its potential? One of the factors that makes the Third Billion so powerful—its global reach—also makes that question difficult to answer. Any answer must start with an assessment of the specific constraints faced by Third Billion constituents in a given region.
To begin understanding the levers available to decision makers, we developed the Third Billion Index, a means of ranking countries in terms of how effectively they are empowering women as economic agents in the marketplace. The index itself is a composite of established data drawn from the World Economic Forum and the Economist Intelligence Unit, among other sources. Our composite index is unique, however, in that we have chosen to focus on women’s economic and professional empowerment. The Third Billion Index groups the indicators of women’s economic standing into two clusters. The first is “inputs,” meaning steps that governments and the private sector can take to improve the economic position of women. These inputs include laws and policies regarding minimum schooling, employment policies during and after childbirth, and access to credit.

As of April 2010, number of facebook users in Saudi Arabia exceeded the 2 million users, which makes the kingdom the second largest Arab population on the largest social networking hub.
Among the significant findings, the survey found the participants highly adept at using new media. They spent considerable time consuming new and traditional media, but much less time producing media content. For instance, the vast majority of participants indicated that they had never blogged. In addition, those who did produce media content, through blogging or otherwise, tended to do it in a language other than their native language.
Indeed, with the exception of news, the majority of surveyed youth consumed and produced media in English, rather than Arabic. In addition, the participants used media predominantly for entertainment, for connecting with others, and for work or schoolwork, but less often for current affairs, for expressing their opinions, or for political activism.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has undertaken the most intensive survey of ICT in the history of the UAE. The survey focuses primarily on ICT access (i.e. internet connections) and ICT use (i.e. utilization of internet). Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.

Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.
Dr. William Harvey is a seasoned Operations Leader with extensive experience in chemical processing, manufacturing, and operations management. At Michelman, he currently oversees multiple sites, leading teams in strategic planning and coaching/practicing continuous improvement. William is set to start his eighth year of teaching at the University of Cincinnati where he teaches marketing, finance, and management. William holds various certifications in change management, quality, leadership, operational excellence, team building, and DiSC, among others.
