Schools using ChalkTalk saw significant test score improvements and high teacher and student adoption rates showing the importance of social learning.

From improved student achievement to lowered dropout rates to fewer discipline issues, districts across the US are using the School Improvement Formula to improve almost everything in their schools.
Whether from our professional experiences, strong social justice orientations, or the stories we hear from children in care, care leavers, and foster carers, most of us just know that education has the potential to make a significant contribution towards improving the life-chances of children and young people in OOHC. From countries as diverse as Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, United States, Wales, and Australia, we now have a relatively strong body of research literature on the education of children and young people in OOHC, to support such beliefs. Across these studies, we now also have a better understanding of: the educational challenges that children and young people across these countries face; the competing underlying explanations; and some of the more promising individual policy and practice initiatives that appear to be making a difference to the lives of some. However, what we seem to know much less about is how to go about effecting successful system-wide change. Based upon the experiences of four jurisdictions overseas that appear to be having some success in relation to the education of children and young people in OOHC as case examples, the paper: identifies areas of possible success; examines respective contexts, approaches, and explanations for how such success is being realised; and explores possible lessons for other jurisdictions. While 'one size does not fit all', a range of strategic, policy, leadership, professional, and structural issues, are discussed. The four case examples are England, Scotland, Sweden, and Ontario Province in Canada.
In October 2012, School Improvement Network surveyed educators from across the nation to find out the use and effects of technology in classrooms. 6,929 educators from all 50 states shared how technology is being used in their classroom and how it’s affecting students. Among the findings, 48% of educators say they allow students to bring and use technology devices in their classroom, and 80% of educators believe technology in the classroom increases student performance. One in 3 educators email students as part of their learning platform, and of those, 75% say it affects their homework return rate.
Our first case study in Artesia, New Mexico was done in 2008. This case study updates their PD 360 use, plus the addition of Common Core 360 and Observation 360, components of the Educator Effectiveness System. The current reform movement in the United States began in the 1990s and has manifested itself as a standards movement. It is a movement to establish state and national frameworks, to which local school districts are encouraged to link their efforts to implement local standards. The linchpin that holds together the standards framework is that they are rigorous; voluntary, in that states and localities decide whether or not to use them; and flexible, in that states and localities can decide which strategies are best for their own schools.
Today, virtually every state in the nation has gone about the business of articulating standards, revising curricular offerings, and developing assessments to measure whether the standards are being met. At the national level, initiatives by the federal government and national organizations have been joined in an effort to produce a comprehensive and coherent standards movement. Currently, many national professional organizations have developed or are in the process of developing national standards for their particular subject areas. States have connected to these efforts on numerous fronts.
The current movement has focused primarily on three types of standards: 1) content or curriculum standards; 2) performance or accountability standards; and 3) capacity or delivery standards (also referred to as opportunity-to-learn standards). The three types of standards are linked - one will not succeed without the other two.
The purpose of this paper is four-fold: First, we define "students of diverse needs and cultures" and the "standards movement." Second, we address specific initiatives of current reform efforts in progress in mathematics and science education. Third, we discuss critical issues related to the successful implementation of mathematics and science standards (i.e., teachers professional development, technological advancements, opportunity-to-learn standards, school organization, and assessments.) Fourth, we suggest references to be used as curriculum materials, how-to articles of use to teachers in the classroom, and seminal research and philosophical literature related to mathematics and science reform initiatives.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
