Hand grenades are handheld weapons used by military forces that allow soldiers to kill enemies and destroy equipment. There are different types of grenades that serve various purposes on missions. Historically, the most important type is the fragmentation grenade, which is a soldier's personal indirect weapon. A hand grenade works by having a safety pin and lever that, when released after throwing, activates a striker and delay element that ignites the filler and causes it to explode or burn after a few seconds. Grenades have a body to contain the filler and fuze assembly that detonates the filler. Soldiers are trained to safely hold, throw, and employ grenades at a short range to allow time to avoid the blast.
