The Scarlet Letter Essays
Writing an essay on "The Scarlet Letter" can be quite challenging due to the intricate nature of
the novel and the depth of its themes. The narrative, penned by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is rich in
symbolism and explores complex issues such as morality, sin, and societal expectations. Crafting
an essay on this topic requires a thorough understanding of the characters, the historical context,
and the symbolism employed by Hawthorne.
One of the difficulties lies in analyzing the characters, particularly Hester Prynne and Arthur
Dimmesdale, and deciphering the psychological and emotional turmoil they undergo throughout
the story. The Scarlet Letter itself is a powerful symbol that requires careful interpretation, and
connecting it to the broader themes of the novel demands a nuanced approach.
Moreover, addressing the historical and cultural aspects of Puritan society in 17th-century
America adds another layer of complexity. A comprehensive essay would delve into the societal
norms, the role of religion, and the harsh consequences faced by those who deviated from the
established moral code.
Effective essays on "The Scarlet Letter" also necessitate the ability to integrate literary criticism
and scholarly perspectives. Engaging with academic analyses adds depth to the essay but requires
a solid grasp of literary theory and critical perspectives.
In summary, writing an essay on "The Scarlet Letter" demands a combination of literary analysis
skills, historical understanding, and the ability to navigate complex themes. It's not just about
summarizing the plot but about delving into the layers of meaning woven into the narrative.
Nevertheless, with careful research, thoughtful analysis, and a clear thesis, crafting a compelling
essay on this classic novel is definitely achievable.

Essay Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big
Sleep
Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep
I sat at my desk, wondering what I could possibly write about The Big Sleep. I
mean, there are so many possibilities. This guy, Raymond Chandler s writing style is
so different from anything I have ever read before, that there are many things that I
could talk about. I heard that Chandler once said, I live for syntax! It does not surprise
me that he would say something along those lines. I mean, this writer is all over the
page with different writing techniques. Whether it is his use of similes or the lack of
punctuation, Chandler s novel is easy to read, process and enjoy.
I wouldn t say that this book requires an in depth reading to understand the ... Show

In places that he could use a dash, the reader will see a comma. This is a strange
style because it makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other
kinds of punctuation so he just stuck to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit
comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of about six sentences on
average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small
paragraph!
Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the
conversational paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six
sentences. The sentences say what they say; they are not long winded, layered
sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words in the sentences are not
by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more than
two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow
the plot easier; the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would
stumble over.
Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man
must eat, sleep and breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were
to open the book to any page, most likely there will be a simile on it. For instance,
randomly opening my copy of The Big Sleep, I turn to page 81 and find this: People
who spend their money for second hand sex jags are as nervous as dowagers who can
t find the restroom (81).
Dj Kol Herc History
Industry of Hip Hop
Where did hip hop originate and who were its founder? Like any style of music,
hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different
artists, but there s a case to be made that it came to life precisely on this day, August
11, 1973, in the west Bronx, New York City. Clive Campbell better known to history
as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop. Born and raised to the age of 10 in
Kingston, Jamaica, DJ Kool Herc began spinning records at parties and between
sets his father s band played while he was a teenager in the Bronx in the early
1970s. Herc often emulated the style of Jamaican selectors (DJs) by toasting (i.e.,
talking) over the records he spun, but his historical significance has nothing to do
with rapping. Kool Herc s contribution to hip hop was even more fundamental.

WEAKNESS1 * Relatively weak Research and Development * Lower Margins
compared to Competitors * Significant exposure to declining PC market Dell s
research and development wing is relatively poor in developing new products or in
investment for research purposes. According to Data Monitor report Dell has
relatively weak research, development and engineering (R amp;D) capabilities
compared to its major competitors. The company s R amp;D spending has been
lower than its competitors. Dell s R amp;D expenses were $661 million, $624
million respectively, during financial year 2011 and financial year 2010. By
contrast, its main competitors such as HP reported R amp;D spending of $3,000
million and $2,800 million in financial year 2010 and 2009; and IBM reported R
amp;D spending of $6,026 million and $5,820 million, respectively, in financial
year 2010 and 2009. Furthermore, the company s R amp;D spending as percentage
of total revenues was 1.1% in financial year 2010, compared to HP (2.4%), and
IBM (6%) (Data Monitor report). These numbers shows that Dell is lacking inputting
impetus to its R amp;D wing which may impact its growth in highly competitive,
rapidly changing and dynamic technology market. As a result Dell has significantly
less number of patents than it competitor like HP and IBM. At the end of financial

Space Odyssey Vs Technology
Technology has long become a part of our everyday lives from small gadgets like our
phones to huge scientific breakthroughs like rockets. Even discovering how humans
evolved from apes into the organisms that they are today, revealed how humans are
still undergoing evolution. Curiosity is a trait that has inspired humans to innovate
and be where they are today, and has given them the capability to be able to make
tools that can make their lives easier. Unfortunately, these tools have inclined humans
to become increasingly dependent on them, giving the tools more control as
technologyinnovates. In Space Odyssey: 2001 by Stanley Kubrick, as humans invent
more and more technology, they invest their own powerin it, becoming dependent on
it and relying on the tools to live their own lives. In the movie, a computer system
with artificial intelligence, Hal, has control over the entire spaceship, risking the
human passengers aboard the vessel. When humans build new technology, the
devices are meant to be controlled by their inventors, not vice versa. Yet, Hal
conducts the mental health reports of the passengers on board, checking in every
once in awhile to make sure they are emotionally and mentally healthy. As he
conducts there periodic surveys, Hal gets to know a lot more about the passenger s,
Dave and Frank s lives, snatching their most basic right of privacy away.
Furthermore, Frank and Dave have to go into a space pod and turn off the audio
connection to Hal s computer

India s Break From The British Raj
In my search for a research topic, all I knew was that I wanted to learn more about
a country that I knew almost nothing about. I ve always been intrigued by India
with its beautiful land and culture, but in my years of school I have never learned
too much about it and had always wondered why there was such a heavy British
influence there. Little did I know, this English influence began long before I
imagined and will mostly likely continue to exist for quite some time. Furthermore, I
have chosen to research and write about Indias break from the British Raj(rule) of
almost 100 years of imperialism. The leader I chose in this movement that proved to
be extremely significant for its success is Mahatma Gandhi. Through my research I
wanted to focus on how India, aided by Gandhi, fought the increased
interconnectedness forced upon them by the British to show how this resistance
movement was successful and brought about change. A significant question that I
want to answer in this paper is, what does India s example of resistance show us about
both imperialism and globalization? To effectively analyze their resistance
movement, we must consider the many causes for the tension and need for
separation, the nature of the resistance movement, and most importantly, whether or
not it was effective. From my research, I learned that there were countless causes for
resistance towards Great Britain due to the fact that so many issues had been building
up between the two countries overtime,
Strengths And Weaknesses Of Leadership
The first step to analyzing my personal leadership practices is to evaluate my
strengths and weaknesses as a leader. One of the tools used to evaluate my
leadership profile is the Seven Habits Profile, attached to this analysis.
After completing this Seven Habits profile, some of the leadership strengths and
weaknesses I knew I possessed were reinforced with the results of this survey. Scoring
highest, were my strengths of putting first things first and sharpening the saw. These
two strengths were followed closely by a third place tie of being in tune with my
emotional bank account and ability to be proactive. Scoring lowest were my two
greatest weaknesses, which are seeking first to understand and life balance. Tied in
third place as weaknesses are thinking win win and synergize.
One of my highest scoring strengths is my ability to put first things first. This came
to me as no surprise, as I see this dominant characteristic in almost every aspect of
my life. Whether professionally or personally, my ability to see what needs to get
done coupled with my drive to cross things off my to do list has been a strength of
mine as far back as I can remember. My personality is inclined to work first, play
later. I tend to enjoy work and personal life at a greater capacity when I know there
are no pressing matters to tend to.
Another strength identified in the Seven Habits Profile is my ability to sharpen the
saw. Personal growth in all aspects, including spiritual, physical, mental
Why God Should Not Be Blamed On God
Many people throughout history have found themselves asking why evil exists. Or
why, an all powerful, omnipotent, omniscient, and morally perfect God allows evil
into the world that he/she created. This question has brought about many answers
and much debate between believers and non believers. I have done a lot of reading
on this dilemma and hope to address it through looking at a few key points. First, I
want to address the question, what do we, as humans perceive as evil. To answer that
question, I will look at both physical and moral evil, as well as try to explain what
both are, and how they should not be blamed on God. Secondly, I will address the
question why would an all good God allow evil to exist within his creation. To
answer that question, I will look to freewill to help explain why God would allow
evil to take place. Finally, I will address the major question, why do bad things
happen to good people. I feel to answer the question we have to look to our own
perception of the situation, and what Gods plan is. The problem of evilhas been of
great debate throughout time, and continues to be today. The best place to start to
understand this debate, and try to make heads or tails of it is to discuss what we as
human beings see as evil.
The first question that needs to be answered is what type of things humans perceive
as evil. To answer this, you must understand that there are two types of evil that is
present in our world. These two types of evil are physical and
Test Taking Strategies
Test Taking Strategies
For 10 years, I was the one testing the students, teaching strategies and finding new
ones to help students study. Suddenly, I found myself returning to school and the
anxiety, stress, lack of time, and just all the unknowns seemed to overwhelm my life.
The last couple of years I have learned to incorporate strategies that work best for me,
but there is always room for improvement and strengthening. Learning, study and test
taking skills are some of the most important things to have when furthering your
education. Upon reading Strategies for Test Success by Linda Anne Silvestri, I was

Test Strategies Not so Helpful
There are so many strategy recommendations for students. While each have good
points, some are more helpful than others. Strategies that don t seem as helpful to me
are simulating actual test like circumstances when studying for the exam, study
groups, note taking by using the fancy systems. These three strategies just seem to
increase my stress level to the point I feel like I am not learning.
Simulating actual test like circumstances has just never worked for me as I usually
don t pick the correct information to test myself on and the important information
gets left behind. Study groups cause me too much pressure because I find that one
or two people seem to be putting the study guides together. This is a pet peeve for
me; I don t mind sharing my ideas but don t expect me to do all the work and then
hand it to you. The final one that has never worked for me is taking notes by using
one of the many note taking systems. I find myself spending too much time trying
to remember what needs to be written where, organizing, how to fold the paper. I
have developed my own crazy way of taking notes over the years. Note taking is an
area that I feel is individualize for each

CouchSurfing, which is a hospitality online exchange service, enables its members to
enrich their lives by connecting with people from around the world without
necessarily having to travel or pay for it. Members learn more about each other s

is remarkably safe, she states the following three protective measures: The Website

Stock Market
In the modern time, the competitive business world seems to be more serious than
previously. The main aim of business strategy is creating the benefit in trade and also
reducing some of its limitations. Furthermore, another strategy that is applied to the
modern business world is to link the economic globalization such as in order to
become a listed company on the stock market. We can see lots of advantages by listed
companies compared to private companies such as financial stability or are more
opportunities to do business. It is an absolutely interesting that the top biggest

such as Wal mart stores the biggest companies by 2010 (Fortune global 500, 2010)...

Book Summary Of The Bell Jar By Sylvia Plath
Book Summary. The Bell Jar, by Sylvia Plath was published in 1963. It is an
autobiography that is said by some to correspond to the author s life. Throughout
this research paper, I fully agree that this is an autobiography of Plath s life, but
will get into why further into the paper. With this in mind, the protagonist, Esther
Greenwood, travels from Massachusetts to New York as a guest editor for a
magazine. Esther loves poetry. Knowing this, Esther is staying with eleven other
girls at a hotel who are in the same magazine as she is. When first reading that

Then, later on in the novel shows what s really going on in Esther s head in regards
to her sexual nature. Esther doesn t really want to have sex at first because she
doesn t want to get pregnant. Later on, though, she wants to get birth control, even
though this novel is set during a time where birth control is not so common. On
the same topic, Esther also almost gets raped by a man named Marco on the last
night in the city. Esther also gets betrayed by her college boyfriend, Buddy during
the novel who had sexual relations with another woman while dating Esther. With
this said, Esther just wanted to have sex with someone afterwards. After these
scenes, as well as others that will be mentioned shortly, Esther does not know if
she should go after her ambition of poetry, or to keep trying to be more like the
girls in her group and get married. (Sparknotes) Going off of this, Buddy wants to
marry Esther when he gets better from his tuberculosis outbreak. I feel as though
people who are looking at Buddy from the outside think he would be the perfect
person to marry because of his looks, brains, and how ambitious he is. However,
for Esther, he does not understand why she wants to write poetry. I can totally
relate to this part of Esther s life, however, because I had a boyfriend in my past
who everyone thought was tall, dark, and handsome. They thought he was the
kindest and smartest man alive. On the flip side, he was only good for his looks . His
personality was deadly,

Persuasive Essay On Plastic Surgery
Studies have shown that people report increased satisfaction with the body part they
had surgery on. In today s society, a majority of people are unhappy with their
appearance, because of insecurities. Due to insecurities, humans are driven to change
whatever they are unhappy with. It is well known by many that society contributes to
these issues. Plastic surgeryhas become such a common quick fix in today s modern
world that it is necessary to be knowledgeable of the information about it. There are
many different things you can do to your body to change for the better. Vast amounts
of people believe that plastic surgery is one of those better changes. The three most
common types of plastic surgery are: BreastAugmentation, Liposuction, and

Breast Augmentation also known as a boob job was the most common procedure in

Analysis Of Our Son Swear He Has 102 Gallons Of Water
In...
The most complex relationship one could ever try to understand is the relationship
of a child and his or her parents. In the poem, Our Son Swears He Has 102 Gallons
of Water in His Body, by Naomi Shihab Nye, the speaker effectively portrays the
damaged relationship between a child and his parents. The son in the poem believes
he knows everything, and his know it all mentality is the source of the familys
troubles. Through details, imagery, and a shift in the last stanza, the speaker
conveys the son s stubbornness. Throughout the poem, the speaker uses specific
details that show the conflict between the speaker s son and his parents. In the first
stanza, the speaker recalls exchanges of dialogue between the speaker and his or
her son. For example, the speaker s son exclaims, I did the problem / and my
teacher said I was right! (Nye 3 4). The child validated his teacher s opinion but
ridiculed his parents opinion. This is further explained through more details in a later
part of the same stanza. The motherexplains how the son believed his parents were
idiots / without worksheets to back us up (Nye 9 10). The speaker s son had
entrusted his teacher and thought of his teacher as highly intelligent, but believed
that way because of foolish reasoning. In addition, the speaker lists examples of
minor mistakes the parents made that caused the son to be embarrassed of them.
Through distinct details, the speaker describes how the son s mother never
remembers / what a megabyte means and his dad fainted on an airplane once / and
smashed his head on the drinks cart (Nye 10 12). By choosing to include these
particular details, the poet outlines the foundation of the conflict between the son and
his parents. By using imagery, Naomi Shihab Nyeallows readers to visualize the
extent of the situation between the speaker and his or her son. Our Son Swears He
Has 102 Gallons of Water in His Body is filled with sensory language that appeals
to readers senses. The parents desperation shows when the speaker says Light
strokes the dashboard. We are years away from its source (Nye 5 6). The speaker
includes to use this detail for a literal and figurative purpose. In this instance, the
family was in a car, and the
The Issues With Organizational Communication
Issues with Organizational Communication Crises are seen substantially as media
events. Therefore media coverage whether they have been natural or man made; is
indicative of how important, essential and even at times, how down right frustrating
the media has been and will continue to be before, during and after a crisis. Many
people tend to turn to the media and various different media sites (such as Twitter,
Facebook, etc.) to gain pertinent information regarding an event that has taken place
or that is on going. But this has not been done without any issues. When a crisis
occurs sometimes emotions take over and all other plans go out the window.
Communicationis nil at best which can mean that others will suffer. Organization
and communication is the key to the response and recovery efforts of a disaster. At
times before, during and after a disaster there is a lack of inter organizational
networking and/or communication. Inter organization networks are increasingly
portrayed as a more effective form of organization among businesses (Newell and
Swan, 2000). This is essential for businesses in order to be effective in coordinating
the work and required for the development of trust. This makes a huge difference in
the response and recovery phase.
During Hurricane Katrina crisis communication was a huge problem from which it
overshadowed the disaster itself and its aftermath causing politicians and government
officials to waste time arguing than trying to devise a plan to

How successful can the management of fragile environments be, given the constant
and increasing demand for their exploitation?
A fragile environment is an area where the flora and fauna have adapted to a specific
climate and evolved to occupy many different niches due to extremely high
competition for resources. Furthermore due to the constant abiotic conditions,
specialisation and symbiotic relationships have occurred to such a degree that even
the slightest ecological or environmental disruption cannot be accommodated,
meaning individual habitats and ecosystems can be easily destroyed. This
combination of specialisation and interdependence increases the overall fragility and
vulnerability of this biome

As most locals have no other viable alternative to generate income for their families.
Furthermore indigenous peoples often receive little education regarding global
affairs and may not recognise the need for conservation. In addition it is rare that a
single fragile environment is endemic to one country, as they often span over several
territories. A good example is the Amazon rainforestwhich lies within Brazil, holding
60% of the forest, Peru 13%, Columbia 10% and with Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia,
Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana also holding small amounts. This makes it
difficult to establish a uniform strategy across the whole are, and made harder still by
low funds available for conservation in many of these countries.
One of the more popular forms of conservation management is conservation reserves

Introduction and Objective
After its discovery, the artwork of the cave amazed the world! Really, how in the
world were artists able to accomplish so much in such limited circumstances?
Consider the lack of light and the crude tools really, these are masterpieces in every
sense of the word.
But it ALSO brought more than a million visitors to Lascaux between 1948 and 1963.
That s a lot of visitors and those visitors caused a variety of problems for the cave art
itself.
Let s learn more about how the scientists and historians at Lascaux are preserving the
artwork through three main sources:
1.Preservation
2.Reproduction
3.Restoration

Never directly touch fragile decorated walls.
2.Run impact studies before the implementation of any new policy.
See, microbiologists have figured out that spraying certain pest killers can have
harmful secondary effects. We also know now that the surfaces are crumbly and that
any brushing action, even with a very fine brush, will lead to a loss of substance.
Such actions are forbidden in the decorated areas, since they will cause irreversible
damage and will have unpredictable results, like infestations that can occur again.

Summary
Rock art as a whole is one of the most important assets in the history of art. Lascaux
is certainly a part of that, and therefore it must be protected. Lascaux Cave reminds
us of the reasons why preservation is a necessity: above all to limit the effects of
human activity on any decorated sites, and on their surrounding environment. That is
the main condition for their survival. That, and by reproducing their beauty in

The Student Athlete Association and Subsidized Payment
of...
Position Statement
It is the position of the SAA that all college student athletes begin and remain amateur
athletes while attending college. Payment for college athletes should be scholarships
that can include tuition, books, dorm accommodations, meal on campus or while
traveling. Anything above this should be considered subsidized and is considered in
violation of the SAA s governing body.
Introduction
The SAA (Student Athletic Association) is an organization that was developed to
protect and keep all college athletes in an amateur status. The SAA s job is to make
sure student athletes are not being taken advantage of and are remaining true to the
student first mission set forth by the SAA College studies should not undertake for ...

taking on a life of their own. It seemed that the SAA needed a full time staff just to
deal with the complexity of these problems. In 1952 the SAA was created as we
know it today to deal with these complex issues. Women s Athletics were introduced
in 1980, when Divisions II and III established 10 championships for 1981 82. A year
later, the historic 75th Convention adopted an extensive governance plan to include
women s athletics programs, services and representation. (Crowley, 2006)
Discussion
What has happened to the idea of attending college for the sake of an education and
playing a sport that is loved by the athlete to help offset the cost of a college
education? That simple thought seems to be lost as of late as college sports have
become a stepping stone for anyone wanting to play a professional sport. The current
dilemma in college athletics is weather to pay, especially football and basketball
athletes extra money while attending college. There has been much discussion and
rational on the subject over the last few years. According to James H. Humphrey,
Stress in College Athletics there are 5 causes of stress among college athletes. 1.
Academic Problems, 2.Athletic demands, 3. Time 4. Relationships with others, 5.
Finances (Humphrey, 2000). This is one of

lyrics used in the song Masters Of War by Bob Dylan, that were used to reveal the
disappointment and anger that Dylan felt towards the US government and military
officials during the Vietnam war. Bob Dylanwas a folk singer who was well known
for creating political protest songs about then current topics throughout history. After

This song has a powerful anti war statement that can still be considered relevant to
today s society and war culture. The song Masters Of War by Bob Dylan uses
rhetorical devices, melodic rhythms, and different types of appeal to express the
political message of the song. The meaning and message of the song is an anti war
political song against the government. The communicator is Dylan himself who uses
his song to convey the unmorality of the government to the audience through the
lyrics and haunting vocals. The intended audience is the government, who Dylan
feels is responsible for a lot of death and must learn from their mistakes. The song
Masters Of War carries a resentful message towards the government, and after

James D. Watson s The Double Helix
James D. Watson s The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the
Structure of DNA is his version of what happened between 1950 and 1953 and how
he and his colleague Francis Crick discovered the structure of DNA. In this essay I
will establish how Watson presents himself, how he describes his own personality
and character as a scientist, the nature of scienceand the characteristics of the
scientific community. In particular, how he depicts the the character and personality
of other scientists specifically Linus Pauling and Rosalind Franklin. I will do this in
relation to Mertonian norms Communism and Organised Skeptism as well as Ian

It is constantly recurring throughout his autobiographical statements as he recounts
how each small discovery by the scientists he encounters help find a simple
explanation, model for the structure of DNA from the complex ideas and evidence
they began with. It is seen that each scientist had something to contribute whether it
was a discovery or knowledge in their area of expertise that was beneficial in the
discovery of the DNA structure. For example, when Crick saw Crystallographer
V.Vand s discovery of a theory for the diffraction of x rays by helical molecules
though he thought the theory was invalid it peaked his curiosity in finding an
accurate theory. Furthermore, in Watson s interview it is seen that when it comes to
science he thinks that if there is scientific knowledge that will affect human beings ,
scientists, the scientific community should work to ensure that they understand the

Currently, there are two major of database management systems which are used to
deal with data, the first one called Relational Database Management System
(RDBMS) which is the traditional relational databases, it deals with structured data
and have been popular since decades from 1970, while the second one called Not
only Structure Query Language databases (NoSQL), they have been dealing with
semi structured and unstructured data; the NoSQL term was introduced for the first
time in 1998 by Carlo Strozzi and Eric Evans reintroduced the term NoSQL in early
2009, and now the NoSQL types are gaining their popularity with the development of
the internet and the social media. NoSQL are intending to override the cons of

The Relationship Between Grks And Arrestins
2.3.2GRKs and пЃў arrestins
GPCR desensitization is a deactivation of GPCR elicited signaling following
prolonged or repeated agonist exposure. A major mechanism underlying
desensitization is agonist stimulated phosphorylation and endocytosis of the receptor.
The second messenger dependent protein kinases were originally regarded as the
principal mediators of GPCR phosphorylation and desensitization. However,
following the discovery of G protein coupled receptor kinases (GRKs, originally
called пЃў adrenoceptor kinases), the GRKs have been shown to play a central role
in the agonist induced desensitization of many GPCRs (Kelly 2008). The GRK
family of serine/threonine kinases comprises seven members. Based on sequence
homology, vertebrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, пЃў arrestins can mediate sustained ERK phosphorylation or
protective mGluR signaling, which are G protein independent processes (Emery
2010, Wang 2016). At the end of GPCR cycles, a regulator of G protein signaling
(RGS) acts as GTPase activating proteins (GAPs), leading to GTP hydrolysis and
reversing the receptor to an initial resting state (Sato 2015).
Different GRK subtypes combined with the action of пЃў arrestins can contribute the
endocytosis of Group I mGluRs in an agonist dependent manner; however, the
results are inconsistent (reviewed in Refs: Iacovelli 2013, Kim 2008). Both GRK2
and GRK4 induce the agonist induced internalization of mGluR1a, which appears to
require GRK2 mediated phosphorylation of the S869 V893 region of mGluR1a
when expressed in HEK cells (Iacovelli 2003, Sallese 2000, Mundell 2003). These
agonist induced internalization processes are пЃў arrestin 1/2 and dynamin
dependent (Mundell 2001, 2002, 2003). пЃў arrestin 1 appears to be important in
mGluR1 endocytosis; however, the agonist stimulated internalization of mGluR1a is
observed only when пЃў arrestin 1 is co expressed with either GRK2 or GRK5 in
HEK cells. GRK2, GRK5, пЃў arrestin 1, or пЃў arrestin2 individually has no
significant effect on the internalization of mGluR1a (Dale 2001). пЃў arrestin 1, but
not пЃў arrestin 2, selectively interacts with mGluR1a and is redistributed to the same

banks, energy companies, schools, hospitals and everything around us, ultimately,
all of it helps users to do something, technology is the world. If IT didn t work, and
didn t function, and didn t do what it supposed to do it would be a massive
problem. We won t be able to shop or use ATMs; drive a car or fly a plane; monitor

touch anything we do is IT related. It s such a powerful tool to create or make a
change, it can diminish the poverty and drive the economy, and if you are someone
who is determined to change the world, IT is the way to do that. People who are
naturally inquisitive, like innovation, cutting edge, excitement and fun will make a
great IT specialist. I think, the world would be a very sad and boring place to live

consumer confidence, consumer demographics or size, and the overall sells. The best
commercials with celebrityendorsements are usually funny, as they are more
memorable. Snickers used Betty Whitein one of the You re not you when you re

Fosfomycin Resistance Against Salmonella Species
A group of researchers from Canada have discovered that there is a gene that
confines an antibody from Salmonella. They discovered that this gene is found in
broiler chickens. Broiler chickens aren t used as much for egg production. These
chickens are known for being raised on farms and then butchered for meat. The
researchers took their information and published a journal where the information
and research can be found. The gene itself is named fosA7; it got its name because
it carries a high level of resistance to fosfomycin. A common use to fosfomycin is an
antibiotic and is commonly used to help women cure their urinary tract infections.
The 7 is fosA7 represents that it is the seventh of the fosA genes that have been
discovered. As of now fosfomycin resistance is limited against Salmonellaspecies....

Diarra, is a research scientist in Food Safety at Agriculture and Agri Food Canada.
Diarra said, The powerful resistance the fosA7 gene confers is worrisome. It could
spread among different Salmonella species, as well as other bacterial pathogen
species, via horizontal gene transfer, due to increased use of fosfomycin in both
clinical and veterinary settings. Thus, vigilant monitoring for the spread of
fosfomycin resistance in bacteria, isolated from humans and animals, is needed.
Because of what Diarra said, many researchers wanted to test to see the strength of
the resistance. For the researchers to test the strength of this gene they had to clone it
and place it into the chromosome that was non antibiotic resistant. The chromosome
that they were placing the chromosomes into was Salmonella Enterica. After
reviewing their results, they found that their hypothesis was correct. The gene fosA7
is responsible for the resistance of fosfomycin. The gene binds to fosfomycin and this
is what causes it to become

Why Is John Brown Wrong
John Brown: Right or Wrong about Abolition
While John Brown had the right idea about abolishing slavery, he killed people
because of it. However, he believed that it was his God given mission to free the
slaves, and so he employed the help of his sons and other people sympathetic to his
cause. Even though he might have had good intentions and ideas, he went about
abolishing slavery the wrong way.
John Brown was a radical abolitionist who believed in the violent overthrow of the
slavery system. (History.com Staff) He was born in Torrington, Connecticut, on
May 9, 1800, to Ruth Mills and Owen Brown. Brown s father was a Calvinist and

What Is King Arthur Real
The story of King Arthur is one that has fascinated schoolchildren and adults alike

Media; Levi Jeans Campaign Essay
Why in your opinion, was the Levi Strauss 501 campaign so successful?
The Levi Strauss 501 advertising campaign was so successful in 1984 1990 as it
attracted the typical American teens selling independence, sexuality and physical
good looks, representing the perfect figure and body. It illustrated a complete
lifestyle to the teenagers world. Admiring the fantasy of idols James Dean and
Marlon Brando, all connecting to the Levi guys (jeans) in the adverts, giving the

changed from blue to black. They purposely did this to make more money because
since World War 11, people had more wealth. The teens had to be in with the latest
fashion.
There is plenty of iconography throughout the adverts. The image of a dark, muscled,
tanned bloke appears in each advert. This independent, sexy guy is in it, as it will
attract more customers to buy the jeans, thinking they will be like him (or the Levi s
girl, who is stunning, free and healthy too). The camera will constantly focus on the
jeans, encouraging you to buy them. American styles emerge in every advert. A
good example is the sunsets. Usually at the end, a car (or Harley Davidson) will
disappear into the sunset leaving with happy thoughts. Or skyscrapers will crop up in
the background reminding you it originated in America!
The red label on the jeans means everything so it is repeated frequently, many big
close ups are used on them. At the beginning of each advertisement music
commences. The song will always relate to that specific advert. The Launderettes
song is by Marvin Gaye, Hurdle Through the Grapevine . The lyrics will constantly

years and modern theorists, such as Michael Walzer, author of Just and Unjust

wage war. The criteriain jus ad bellum include; just cause, declaration by a proper
authority, right intention, a reasonable chance of success, the end proportional to the

In Locke s State of nature the government s primary objective is to protect
individuals. For example, if one was in a state of nature and a gang of savages
attacked him or her, he or she would do anything necessary to defend themselves.
They would then form a group with a common objective of protection. With life now
insured, the group can pursue liberty, happiness and estate. Just War Theorists claim
the governments of today are essentially the same, only on a larger scale.
Walzer and other Just War Theorists hold that self defense justifies pre emptive
strikes. If an outside force is obviously endangering a state, it is then justifiable to
stop the attack before it happens. Pre emptive strikes can prevent a future war that
has worse effects. Walzer has what he calls a general formula for a just pre
emptive strike, States may use military force in the face of threats of war,
wherever the failure to do so would seriously risk their territorial integrity and
political independence (87). Walzer uses an example to justify his general formula
of a justifiable pre emptive strike. He claims that the Six Day War in 1967 was
indeed a just pre emptive attack on Egypt by Israel. Israel was under real threat
because Egyptian President Nasser massed an army and was positioning for attack,
while simultaneously closing the Straits of Tiran to Israel, and publicizing his goal to

The Human Resource Management Policies
Human Resource Management Policies
Each school district has human resource policies in place to help ensure a safe and
smooth running workplace. The policies serve to provide for the needs of the
diverse workforce. It is important as an educational leader to know your school s
policies and how they are differentiated to meet the needs of each subgroup in the
workforce and thereby increase student achievement. Your organization s systems for
engaging, developing, and assessing the engagement of your work force, with the aim
of enabling and encouraging all members of your workforce to contribute effectively
and to the best of their ability. These systems are intended to foster student
achievement and high performance, to address your core competencies, and to
contribute to the accomplishment of your action plans and to organizational
sustainability (Baldrige National Quality Program, 2007, p. 49)
Human Resource Management Policies
The following information about human resource management policies that are being
used to improve the workforce efficiency in this small rural school was gleaned from
an interview with Andrea Williams, principal of Theresa Bunker Elementary School.
The majority of the policies we discussed come from the district human resources
department, or the negotiated master contract that is negotiated by our local teacher
union. Many of these policies are the same for all employees in the workforce no
matter the group, such as certified or classified.
Hallucinogens In The Ancient Maya Civilization

What hallucinogens Did the Maya use?
What hallucinogenic substances were available in the Maya region or via trade
routes? The following substances are the most widely documented substances used
by the ancient Maya. Drugs, drinks, and ritual enemas were used all across the Maya
region. Using or mixing different psychoactive plants with intoxicating preparations
was also a common practice. Consumption of many of these substances dates back to
the Olmec era (1200 400 BCE). But there is limited evidence to support this.

Pros And Cons Of Birth Control
traception
Contraception is used to prevent pregnancy. The use of condoms can prevent
pregnancy and protect against STDs. Other protective barriers, such as dental dams,
are recommended for oral sex and analingus. Some sexually transmitted infections,
such as genital warts and genital herpes can be spread through skin to skin contact,
not just penetrative sex. For those in committed relationships who seek only to
prevent pregnancy, there are many forms of birth control, and a healthcare provider
can discuss options and detail what is the ideal form of birth control. There is no
single universal method that works for everyone.
According to Michael McGee, MEd, a certified sexual health educator and adjunct
professor at Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, sexual health is

Essay about Reader-Response on Soldier s Home
Reader Response on Soldier s Home The initial reaction I received from reading
Soldier s Home, and my feelings about Soldier s Home now are not the same.
Initially, I thought Harold Krebs is this soldier who fought for two years, returns
home, and is disconnected from society because he is in a childlike state of mind,
while everyone else has grown up. I felt that Krebs lost his immature years, late
teens to early 20 s, because he went from college to the military. I still see him as
disconnected from society, because there isn t anyone or anything that can connect
him to the simple life that his once before close friends and family are living. He has
been through a traumatic experience for the past two years, and he does not... Show

What if the town where you spent two years, was poor and that you learned to take
part in the daily operations of life in order for everyone in the family to be able to
survive, eat, learn, and live healthy. Now two years later, you return back to your
hometown where things come easy, people waste, and people are not as
appreciative of the same things that you are. You dress differently, you eat
different foods, and you have a different outlook on life as a whole. How would
you feel if all your childhood friends and close family treated you like you were
eccentric? One reader felt that Krebs seems to have changed a lot and doesn t
really seem to care about too much . ( Reader , response 14). Krebs is not quite
able to function in society as his friends and family expect. Is this his fault, the
fault of society, or is it a fault at all? Several different readers pointed out that
Krebs is having difficulty because he no longer shares a common interest with the
people in his hometown. Response 12 in Reader Responses to Soldier s Home
suggest that Krebs is struggling to fit in after coming back from war and response
14 in Reader Responses to Soldier s Home points out that Krebs seems to feel an
outcast . What I see is Krebs has just spent two years of his life in battle, something
he never imagined he would be involved in, something that most people could never
imagine. Upon his arrival to his hometown,
The Theories And Interventions That Can Be Applied For
The...
In considering this case and within the social work profession, there are many
theories and interventions that can be applied to the SRS s CPS program including:
contingency, conflict resolution, organizational, systems, and empowerment theories.
These theories do not operate alone, instead they are combined with one another. The
conflict resolution theoretical approach will be utilized through the task centered
model with evidence of NASW s Code of Ethics, because this is specific to this case.
An ethical practitioner should be knowledgeable of these practices and evidence that
supports them (NASW, 2008).
Goal and Objectives
SRS s CPS program goal is to develop a new culture in the way employees deliver
services. In order to accomplish this goal, the CPS program s supervisors will need
to focus on and complete two objectives, which are to develop and implement a
required CPS training for all employees on the new model within three weeks and to
develop and provide a training manual with HIPPA guidelines on case scenarios
when and when not to remove children from their homes in order to ensure more
consistent services at SRS within four weeks.
Approaches and Models for Intervention
As stated previously, the conflict resolution theoretical approach will be utilized
through the task centered model. CPS is in need of required trainings for employees
to develop a new culture on how to effectively deliver services. This case study
illustrates how culture and change are
Essay Date Rape
Date Rape
Every two minutes, somewhere in the world, someone is sexually assaulted. Of these
approximately 248,000 victims, about 87,000 were victims of completed rape, and
70,000 were victims of sexual assault. Up to 4,315 pregnancies may have resulted
from these attacks. Calculations based on the (National Crime Victimization Survey).
Rape is often misunderstood. For one reason rapist are usually portrayed as a
stranger, his motivation is entirely sexual, and the victim is always a young and sexy
female. The truth is not all rapes are the same. The victim doesn t have to be a young

Date rape may involve sex that leaves the victim feeling confused and traumatized.
The victims are usually confused because they are still thinking about how they
knew the assailant from work, mutual friends, or at school. The issue of sexual
consent is a big problem of date rape. Any type of sex forced on a date or person who
has not consented is rape. In our society people think that since you re in a
relationship you could never refuse sexual encounters. Intimate relationships are
one of the main reasons date rape is not recognized as a serious issue. Sexual
consent by force is just wrong and shouldn t be used. People should just accept the
word no and be done with it. The fact is that they still go through great extents to
have sex with a person even like blackmail. Males use their masculine strength to
over power their victims by forcing there bodies down and holding there arms.
Many young boys feel that as long as they can get away with it, they will continue
to force sexual intercourse on a female. Now a day s drugs have been used to
seduce people into having sexual relations. Offenders sometimes spike their victim
s drink in order to dope them up. Spiking drinks usually occurs at parties, clubs, or
any other types of crowded places. The top drug used for this reason is (Rohypnol).
Rohypnol is used for insomnia but people use it for
Descriptive Essay About Art
Art is a form of expression that I could never abandon in my life. I became an artist
at a young age, and I can still remember the day art came into my life like angel
sent straight from God. It was my first time watching my Pops draw a portrait. It
was around noon on Saturday in the summer because the noon heat was almost
unearthly. However the vibe in our small two bedroom apartment was absolutely
groovy and cool. Pops was playing the oldies from the 70 s. Sweet love, my sweet
love you ll be crying out my name , I heard as the talented Anita Baker filled my
home s walls with even more soul! He was drawinga self portrait. The detail in the
drawing was so hyper realistic. At the time I did not know that it was a self
portrait. I thought it was just a black man with his hands placed both sides of his
head as if inside he was going crazy inside. My pops hands moved so smoothly as if
each finger had a tiny brain in the tip where the penciltouched. I was around 8 years
old at the time. From that moment I knew I would want to be an artist, because
that type of expression seemed best for my dad. I always paid attention to the early
teachings from the big guy. The cleanliness of the lines that my dad had , it almost
seemed as if he was a surgeon of the paper. He would start with this blank piece paper
and hours later it would become a piece of his life , and in some ways it would
become a major part of mine. Pops handed me a wooden number two pencil and a big
piece of off
George Eliot s Middlemarch
In George Eliot s Middlemarch, Will Ladislaw is introduced as Mr. Casaubon s
young cousin. He is seen in the gardens at Lowick Manor and described as a
gentleman with a sketch book [...] and light brown curls (49). Mr. Casaubon
describes him as a young man who with a mercurial temperament, general
inclination to resist responsibility and an affinity towards grand artistic endeavors.
Later in the book, town gossip Mrs. Cadwallader refers to him as a dangerous little
sprig [...] with his opera song and his ready tongue. A sort of Byronic, amorous
conspirator (237). In Middlemarch, Eliot weaves a character with a Romantic
character into the social web of a provincial Victorian village. Eliot s depiction of

In his Preface, Wordsworth claims that the principle objective of his poetry was, to
choose incidents and situations from common life, and to relate or describe them,
throughout, as far as was possible in a selection of language really used by men, and,
at the same time, to throw over them a certain coloring of imagination, whereby
ordinary things should be presented to the mind in an unusual aspect. (294)
The Victorian approach to knowledge which took on the form of large scale
surveys, like Mr. Casaubon s Key to All Mythologies, and factual explorations of
absolute truths, like Dr. Lydgate s practice of medicinal research. Unlike these
grandiose projects, Wordsworth and Ladislaw stand for an exploration of the world
through human understanding. In explaining the nature of his work, Ladislaw tells
Dorothea that being a poet is having the kind of soul in which knowledge passes
instantaneously into feeling, and feeling flashes back as a new organ of
knowledge (142). In stating this, Eliot is in direct conversation with Wordsworth s
claim regarding the objective of the Romantic poet. The Romantics believed that the
physical nature of objects was intrinsically attached to the effect they had on the
perceiver and the true pursuit of knowledge didn t discount either of these two
aspects. There is a key difference in the
Flq And The Quiet Revolution
This argument between the two groups reached a climax during the 1960 s. All
hopes of partnership and cooperation between the two seemed to disappear after the
change in provincial leadership.
This period of massive reform that overtook Quebec was given the name: The Quiet
Revolution. It did not only cause division within the nation, but als, rifts within
Quebec itself. The province was an unstable society where rapid changes [had]
occurred, but which [had] not absorbed [those] transformations at an equal rate.
Groups formed on both sides of arguments concerning separatism, maintaining French
culture, and social classes within society. People felt lost while everything was
changing so quickly and so drastically; defined, opinionated, and unwavering groups
began to emerge. Some of these were terrorist groups who felt very strongly about
the path that Quebec should be taking, and were unafraid to impose their beliefs on
others. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is difficult to define exactly what the FLQ stood for, since there were many
smaller cells that had different priorities. Each group worked semi independently and
had goals that reflected the views of their respective members, which were not always
synonymous with the larger FLQ viewpoint. The members came from diverse
backgrounds and places in society, meaning that the terrorist organization infiltrated a
little everywhere. The wide spread nature of this group meant that there was support
from many sectors within society, allowing the FLQ to act without fear of being

LEAD PARAGRAPH
When you think about Romania, the first thing that probably comes to your mind is
the tale of Dracula. Fictional character who sprang through the homonymous novel
by Irish author Bram Stoker, a figure that was communicated by Hollywood movies
and nowadays has become an urban legend.
Since I was in Bucharest, I decided to visit Transylvania and see the homeland of
Dracula (associated with Vlad III, Prince of Wallachia also known as Vlad the
Impaler) in person. Transylvania is maybe the most famous part of Romania offering
great mountain views, impressive castles, historic medieval cities and little cute
villages.

Or else Dracula s Castle!! We were so excited, the half hour drive from Peles to Bran
felt like hours!!
Much more simple and rugged, our very well informed tour guide told us that this
rangy castle was built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order especially for battles
as it is located on the border of Wallachia with Transylvania and was suffering from
attacks all the time. Its narrow corridors, the low tunnel staircases and its complex
construction like a labyrinth, allowed Romanians to fight the enemy with ease.
In the following years, the castle was used as customs office as it is conveniently
located on the Silk Road until it was taken by royal family in 1920. It initially
became the residence of Queen Mary and after her death it was given to her
daughter, Princess Iliana. It functioned as a hospital during World War II and then
came into the possession of the communist regime with the eviction of the royal
family in 1948.
Although the locals insist that there is no connection of Bram Stoker s novel with
the castle or with the figure of Vlad III the Impaler, ruler of Wallachia, a whole floor
is devoted to recounting the legend, showing the movies filmed based in this myth
and an extended homage to

The Real Estate Investment Trust
This is different from the term land used in economic term, which refers to pieces of
land, livestock, minerals, oil, gases, crops or anything that comes from land source.
On the other hand, term personal property can include land, as well as anything that
is subject to ownership of tangible assets such as stocks, bonds, cash, notes or
intangible assets such as patents or intellectual property.
The Real estate is that area of investment which has been used for the purpose of

The Greatest Composers Of The Twentieth Century
In the forty one years since his passing, Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the most
widely discussed and fiercely debated composers in Western Music. His
compositions are known throughout the world, and his life and morals are a
discussed passionately amongst musicologists with his catalogue consisting of 15
symphonies, 15 string quartets, 37 film scores, and a number of pieces in other
genres. For someone that is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth
century, there lacks a consensus on the meaning of this major works; more
specifically where he is being sarcastic and where he is genuine. It is with certainty
that musicologists can say that Shostakovich suffered terribly from oppression by the
Soviet Unionmost of his adult life, yet he regularly received the government s most
prestigious prizes and accolades. At every development of Soviet Policy regarding
art, whether becoming increasingly strict or more lax, we find Shostakovich
lamenting and jubilant, respectively. He truly was the epitome of the roller coaster
ride of being an artist in the Soviet Union. Ultimately, it is impossible to distinguish
whether Dmitri Shostakovichwas a cynical dissident or a loyal civic artist of the
Soviet Union through the examination of publications by: Solomon Volkov, Laurel
Fay, Irina Shostakovich, Ian McDonald and Richard Taruskin, due to the polarizing
viewpoints that these sources present.
The first publication on the life of Shostakovich was called Testimony:
The Success Of The Gettysburg Address
Abraham Lincoln was a great influence not only to this country, but also to other
political leaders. He showed a great example of how just a few words can change
so much about the U.S and how the people of the U.S live. He had many successes
in his presidential years; one of his great successes was the emancipation
proclamation, this document effected how the people of the U.S treated African
Americans as well as give them right to own land and vote. He also wrote and
delivered the Gettysburg Address, this speech gave people much to think about. The
Gettysburg Address also gave many ideas that they soon put into perspective.
The speech, Gettysburg Address, was written in Gettysburg Pennsylvania after the
Gettysburg battle. According to Civil War Can Trust, this battle was between the
union led by George G. Meade and the confederates led by Robert E. Lee. The union
had 93,921 men and the confederates had 71,699; from those there were 51,112
casualties from both sides of the battle field. It was after the war that president
Lincoln went to Pennsylvania to deliver his, now famous, speech the Gettysburg
Address along with other political leaders.
The Gettysburg Address was written by the 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. This
speech was written for the public, the speech explains how all men should be equal
and how those who serve our country should not be held as slaves. Abraham Lincoln,
the writer of the Gettysburg Address, grew up in Kentucky where there was no

Analysis Of The Novel 1984 By George Orwell
Can anyone recall a time in history more dystopian than the upside down society
that is Nazi Germany? While no other time period comes close, the novel we have
been reading in class deals vigorously with dystopian society. 1984, by George
Orwell, is a dystopian, fiction based book that features a main character named
Winston Smith, a girl named Julia, and many others who come together to make
for a very intense storyline and an intriguing read. It takes place in Oceania, in
1984, while it was written in 1948. With a sense of science fiction, it s set in near
future Oceania. The city is still named London, though the country is called Airstrip
One instead of England. The main conflict in the novel is how Winston wants to
rebel against the party, with only instinct and trace memories to guide him, and
ultimately set the course to change society for the future. However, he ll later find
how it s not so easy to get what you want in this upside down and twisted society.
Nazi Germanyand the fictional society portrayed in 1984 share similar dystopian
characteristics such as how a figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of
the society, how propaganda is used to control the citizens of society, and how
citizens live in a dehumanized state.
While he s arguably the most hated person to ever set foot on this earth, Hitler has
to go down as one of the most successful leaders ever. This is solely because of how
he manipulated his people so well, and how he was a figurehead

The Scarlet Letter Essays

  • 1. The Scarlet Letter Essays Writing an essay on "The Scarlet Letter" can be quite challenging due to the intricate nature of the novel and the depth of its themes. The narrative, penned by Nathaniel Hawthorne, is rich in symbolism and explores complex issues such as morality, sin, and societal expectations. Crafting an essay on this topic requires a thorough understanding of the characters, the historical context, and the symbolism employed by Hawthorne. One of the difficulties lies in analyzing the characters, particularly Hester Prynne and Arthur Dimmesdale, and deciphering the psychological and emotional turmoil they undergo throughout the story. The Scarlet Letter itself is a powerful symbol that requires careful interpretation, and connecting it to the broader themes of the novel demands a nuanced approach. Moreover, addressing the historical and cultural aspects of Puritan society in 17th-century America adds another layer of complexity. A comprehensive essay would delve into the societal norms, the role of religion, and the harsh consequences faced by those who deviated from the established moral code. Effective essays on "The Scarlet Letter" also necessitate the ability to integrate literary criticism and scholarly perspectives. Engaging with academic analyses adds depth to the essay but requires a solid grasp of literary theory and critical perspectives. In summary, writing an essay on "The Scarlet Letter" demands a combination of literary analysis skills, historical understanding, and the ability to navigate complex themes. It's not just about summarizing the plot but about delving into the layers of meaning woven into the narrative. Nevertheless, with careful research, thoughtful analysis, and a clear thesis, crafting a compelling essay on this classic novel is definitely achievable. • 2. Essay Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep Raymond Chandler s Writing Techniques in The Big Sleep I sat at my desk, wondering what I could possibly write about The Big Sleep. I mean, there are so many possibilities. This guy, Raymond Chandler s writing style is so different from anything I have ever read before, that there are many things that I could talk about. I heard that Chandler once said, I live for syntax! It does not surprise me that he would say something along those lines. I mean, this writer is all over the page with different writing techniques. Whether it is his use of similes or the lack of punctuation, Chandler s novel is easy to read, process and enjoy. I wouldn t say that this book requires an in depth reading to understand the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In places that he could use a dash, the reader will see a comma. This is a strange style because it makes the reader think that he did not know how to use the other kinds of punctuation so he just stuck to the comma. I think that Chandler was a bit comma happy because every paragraph, consisting of about six sentences on average, probably has six or seven commas at least that s a lot for one small paragraph! Small paragraphs are also a characteristic of Chandler s style. Not including the conversational paragraphs, I would say that Chandler s average paragraph was six sentences. The sentences say what they say; they are not long winded, layered sentences, but quick and to the point sentences. The words in the sentences are not by any means elaborate either. It might take longer to find a word with more than two syllables than a colon! This technique is very effective to let the reader follow the plot easier; the words are not ones that an average intellectual person would stumble over. Possibly the most famous of Chandler s techniques is his use of similes. The man must eat, sleep and breathe similes because they are everywhere! If the reader were to open the book to any page, most likely there will be a simile on it. For instance, randomly opening my copy of The Big Sleep, I turn to page 81 and find this: People who spend their money for second hand sex jags are as nervous as dowagers who can t find the restroom (81).
  • 3. Dj Kol Herc History Industry of Hip Hop Where did hip hop originate and who were its founder? Like any style of music, hip hop has roots in other forms, and its evolution was shaped by many different artists, but there s a case to be made that it came to life precisely on this day, August 11, 1973, in the west Bronx, New York City. Clive Campbell better known to history as DJ Kool Herc, founding father of hip hop. Born and raised to the age of 10 in Kingston, Jamaica, DJ Kool Herc began spinning records at parties and between sets his father s band played while he was a teenager in the Bronx in the early 1970s. Herc often emulated the style of Jamaican selectors (DJs) by toasting (i.e., talking) over the records he spun, but his historical significance has nothing to do with rapping. Kool Herc s contribution to hip hop was even more fundamental. According to Data Monitor report Dell has relatively weak research, development and engineering (R amp;D) capabilities compared to its major competitors. The company s R amp;D spending has been lower than its competitors. Dell s R amp;D expenses were $661 million, $624 million respectively, during financial year 2011 and financial year 2010. By contrast, its main competitors such as HP reported R amp;D spending of $3,000 million and $2,800 million in financial year 2010 and 2009; and IBM reported R amp;D spending of $6,026 million and $5,820 million, respectively, in financial year 2010 and 2009. Furthermore, the company s R amp;D spending as percentage of total revenues was 1.1% in financial year 2010, compared to HP (2.4%), and IBM (6%) (Data Monitor report). • 5. Space Odyssey Vs Technology Technology has long become a part of our everyday lives from small gadgets like our phones to huge scientific breakthroughs like rockets. Even discovering how humans evolved from apes into the organisms that they are today, revealed how humans are still undergoing evolution. Curiosity is a trait that has inspired humans to innovate and be where they are today, and has given them the capability to be able to make tools that can make their lives easier. Unfortunately, these tools have inclined humans to become increasingly dependent on them, giving the tools more control as technologyinnovates. In Space Odyssey: 2001 by Stanley Kubrick, as humans invent more and more technology, they invest their own powerin it, becoming dependent on it and relying on the tools to live their own lives. In the movie, a computer system with artificial intelligence, Hal, has control over the entire spaceship, risking the human passengers aboard the vessel. When humans build new technology, the devices are meant to be controlled by their inventors, not vice versa. Yet, Hal conducts the mental health reports of the passengers on board, checking in every once in awhile to make sure they are emotionally and mentally healthy. As he conducts there periodic surveys, Hal gets to know a lot more about the passenger s, Dave and Frank s lives, snatching their most basic right of privacy away. Furthermore, Frank and Dave have to go into a space pod and turn off the audio connection to Hal s computer

  • 7. India s Break From The British Raj In my search for a research topic, all I knew was that I wanted to learn more about a country that I knew almost nothing about. I ve always been intrigued by India with its beautiful land and culture, but in my years of school I have never learned too much about it and had always wondered why there was such a heavy British influence there. Little did I know, this English influence began long before I imagined and will mostly likely continue to exist for quite some time. Furthermore, I have chosen to research and write about Indias break from the British Raj(rule) of almost 100 years of imperialism. The leader I chose in this movement that proved to be extremely significant for its success is Mahatma Gandhi. Through my research I wanted to focus on how India, aided by Gandhi, fought the increased interconnectedness forced upon them by the British to show how this resistance movement was successful and brought about change. A significant question that I want to answer in this paper is, what does India s example of resistance show us about both imperialism and globalization? To effectively analyze their resistance movement, we must consider the many causes for the tension and need for separation, the nature of the resistance movement, and most importantly, whether or not it was effective. From my research, I learned that there were countless causes for resistance towards Great Britain due to the fact that so many issues had been building up between the two countries overtime,
  • 8. Strengths And Weaknesses Of Leadership The first step to analyzing my personal leadership practices is to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses as a leader. One of the tools used to evaluate my leadership profile is the Seven Habits Profile, attached to this analysis. After completing this Seven Habits profile, some of the leadership strengths and weaknesses I knew I possessed were reinforced with the results of this survey. Scoring highest, were my strengths of putting first things first and sharpening the saw. These two strengths were followed closely by a third place tie of being in tune with my emotional bank account and ability to be proactive. Scoring lowest were my two greatest weaknesses, which are seeking first to understand and life balance. Tied in third place as weaknesses are thinking win win and synergize. One of my highest scoring strengths is my ability to put first things first. This came to me as no surprise, as I see this dominant characteristic in almost every aspect of my life. Whether professionally or personally, my ability to see what needs to get done coupled with my drive to cross things off my to do list has been a strength of mine as far back as I can remember. My personality is inclined to work first, play later. I tend to enjoy work and personal life at a greater capacity when I know there are no pressing matters to tend to. Another strength identified in the Seven Habits Profile is my ability to sharpen the saw. Personal growth in all aspects, including spiritual, physical, mental
  • 9. Why God Should Not Be Blamed On God Many people throughout history have found themselves asking why evil exists. Or why, an all powerful, omnipotent, omniscient, and morally perfect God allows evil into the world that he/she created. This question has brought about many answers and much debate between believers and non believers. I have done a lot of reading on this dilemma and hope to address it through looking at a few key points. First, I want to address the question, what do we, as humans perceive as evil. To answer that question, I will look at both physical and moral evil, as well as try to explain what both are, and how they should not be blamed on God. Secondly, I will address the question why would an all good God allow evil to exist within his creation. To answer that question, I will look to freewill to help explain why God would allow evil to take place. Finally, I will address the major question, why do bad things happen to good people. I feel to answer the question we have to look to our own perception of the situation, and what Gods plan is. The problem of evilhas been of great debate throughout time, and continues to be today. The best place to start to understand this debate, and try to make heads or tails of it is to discuss what we as human beings see as evil. The first question that needs to be answered is what type of things humans perceive as evil. To answer this, you must understand that there are two types of evil that is present in our world. These two types of evil are physical and

Suddenly, I found myself returning to school and the anxiety, stress, lack of time, and just all the unknowns seemed to overwhelm my life. The last couple of years I have learned to incorporate strategies that work best for me, but there is always room for improvement and strengthening. Learning, study and test taking skills are some of the most important things to have when furthering your education. Upon reading Strategies for Test Success by Linda Anne Silvestri, I was able to scrutinize some of my weaknesses, reevaluate my learning style, and look at some new test taking strategies while assessing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using this strategy instead of trying to memorize text out of a book, one should have to spend less time studying and more information should be retained. (Kaplan Nursing: Lipponcott) Test Strategies Not so Helpful There are so many strategy recommendations for students. While each have good points, some are more helpful than others. Strategies that don t seem as helpful to me are simulating actual test like circumstances when studying for the exam, study groups, note taking by using the fancy systems. These three strategies just seem to increase my stress level to the point I feel like I am not learning. Simulating actual test like circumstances has just never worked for me as I usually don t pick the correct information to test myself on and the important information gets left behind. Study groups cause me too much pressure because I find that one or two people seem to be putting the study guides together. This is a pet peeve for me; I don t mind sharing my ideas but don t expect me to do all the work and then hand it to you. The final one that has never worked for me is taking notes by using one of the many note taking systems. I find myself spending too much time trying to remember what needs to be written where, organizing, how to fold the paper. I have developed my own crazy way of taking notes over the years. Note taking is an area that I feel is individualize for each

The main aim of business strategy is creating the benefit in trade and also reducing some of its limitations. Furthermore, another strategy that is applied to the modern business world is to link the economic globalization such as in order to become a listed company on the stock market. We can see lots of advantages by listed companies compared to private companies such as financial stability or are more opportunities to do business. Throughout this research paper, I fully agree that this is an autobiography of Plath s life, but will get into why further into the paper. With this in mind, the protagonist, Esther Greenwood, travels from Massachusetts to New York as a guest editor for a magazine. Esther loves poetry. Knowing this, Esther is staying with eleven other girls at a hotel who are in the same magazine as she is. On the same topic, Esther also almost gets raped by a man named Marco on the last night in the city. Esther also gets betrayed by her college boyfriend, Buddy during the novel who had sexual relations with another woman while dating Esther. With this said, Esther just wanted to have sex with someone afterwards. After these scenes, as well as others that will be mentioned shortly, Esther does not know if she should go after her ambition of poetry, or to keep trying to be more like the girls in her group and get married. (Sparknotes) Going off of this, Buddy wants to marry Esther when he gets better from his tuberculosis outbreak. I feel as though people who are looking at Buddy from the outside think he would be the perfect person to marry because of his looks, brains, and how ambitious he is. However, for Esther, he does not understand why she wants to write poetry. I can totally relate to this part of Esther s life, however, because I had a boyfriend in my past who everyone thought was tall, dark, and handsome. They thought he was the kindest and smartest man alive. On the flip side, he was only good for his looks . His personality was deadly,

In the poem, Our Son Swears He Has 102 Gallons of Water in His Body, by Naomi Shihab Nye, the speaker effectively portrays the damaged relationship between a child and his parents. The son in the poem believes he knows everything, and his know it all mentality is the source of the familys troubles. Through details, imagery, and a shift in the last stanza, the speaker conveys the son s stubbornness. Throughout the poem, the speaker uses specific details that show the conflict between the speaker s son and his parents. In the first stanza, the speaker recalls exchanges of dialogue between the speaker and his or her son. For example, the speaker s son exclaims, I did the problem / and my teacher said I was right! (Nye 3 4). The child validated his teacher s opinion but ridiculed his parents opinion. This is further explained through more details in a later part of the same stanza. The motherexplains how the son believed his parents were idiots / without worksheets to back us up (Nye 9 10). The speaker s son had entrusted his teacher and thought of his teacher as highly intelligent, but believed that way because of foolish reasoning. In addition, the speaker lists examples of minor mistakes the parents made that caused the son to be embarrassed of them. Through distinct details, the speaker describes how the son s mother never remembers / what a megabyte means and his dad fainted on an airplane once / and smashed his head on the drinks cart (Nye 10 12). By choosing to include these particular details, the poet outlines the foundation of the conflict between the son and his parents. By using imagery, Naomi Shihab Nyeallows readers to visualize the extent of the situation between the speaker and his or her son. Our Son Swears He Has 102 Gallons of Water in His Body is filled with sensory language that appeals to readers senses. The parents desperation shows when the speaker says Light strokes the dashboard. We are years away from its source (Nye 5 6). The speaker includes to use this detail for a literal and figurative purpose. In this instance, the family was in a car, and the
  • 19. The Issues With Organizational Communication Issues with Organizational Communication Crises are seen substantially as media events. Therefore media coverage whether they have been natural or man made; is indicative of how important, essential and even at times, how down right frustrating the media has been and will continue to be before, during and after a crisis. Many people tend to turn to the media and various different media sites (such as Twitter, Facebook, etc.) to gain pertinent information regarding an event that has taken place or that is on going. But this has not been done without any issues. When a crisis occurs sometimes emotions take over and all other plans go out the window. Communicationis nil at best which can mean that others will suffer. Organization and communication is the key to the response and recovery efforts of a disaster. At times before, during and after a disaster there is a lack of inter organizational networking and/or communication. Inter organization networks are increasingly portrayed as a more effective form of organization among businesses (Newell and Swan, 2000). This is essential for businesses in order to be effective in coordinating the work and required for the development of trust. This makes a huge difference in the response and recovery phase. During Hurricane Katrina crisis communication was a huge problem from which it overshadowed the disaster itself and its aftermath causing politicians and government officials to waste time arguing than trying to devise a plan to

  • 28. The Relationship Between Grks And Arrestins 2.3.2GRKs and пЃў arrestins GPCR desensitization is a deactivation of GPCR elicited signaling following prolonged or repeated agonist exposure. A major mechanism underlying desensitization is agonist stimulated phosphorylation and endocytosis of the receptor. The second messenger dependent protein kinases were originally regarded as the principal mediators of GPCR phosphorylation and desensitization. However, following the discovery of G protein coupled receptor kinases (GRKs, originally called пЃў adrenoceptor kinases), the GRKs have been shown to play a central role in the agonist induced desensitization of many GPCRs (Kelly 2008). The GRK family of serine/threonine kinases comprises seven members. Based on sequence homology, vertebrate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, пЃў arrestins can mediate sustained ERK phosphorylation or protective mGluR signaling, which are G protein independent processes (Emery 2010, Wang 2016). At the end of GPCR cycles, a regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) acts as GTPase activating proteins (GAPs), leading to GTP hydrolysis and reversing the receptor to an initial resting state (Sato 2015). Different GRK subtypes combined with the action of пЃў arrestins can contribute the endocytosis of Group I mGluRs in an agonist dependent manner; however, the results are inconsistent (reviewed in Refs: Iacovelli 2013, Kim 2008). Both GRK2 and GRK4 induce the agonist induced internalization of mGluR1a, which appears to require GRK2 mediated phosphorylation of the S869 V893 region of mGluR1a when expressed in HEK cells (Iacovelli 2003, Sallese 2000, Mundell 2003). These agonist induced internalization processes are пЃў arrestin 1/2 and dynamin dependent (Mundell 2001, 2002, 2003). пЃў arrestin 1 appears to be important in mGluR1 endocytosis; however, the agonist stimulated internalization of mGluR1a is observed only when пЃў arrestin 1 is co expressed with either GRK2 or GRK5 in HEK cells. GRK2, GRK5, пЃў arrestin 1, or пЃў arrestin2 individually has no significant effect on the internalization of mGluR1a (Dale 2001). пЃў arrestin 1, but not пЃў arrestin 2, selectively interacts with mGluR1a and is redistributed to the same

Just War Theorists claim the governments of today are essentially the same, only on a larger scale. Walzer and other Just War Theorists hold that self defense justifies pre emptive strikes. If an outside force is obviously endangering a state, it is then justifiable to stop the attack before it happens. Pre emptive strikes can prevent a future war that has worse effects. Walzer has what he calls a general formula for a just pre emptive strike, States may use military force in the face of threats of war, wherever the failure to do so would seriously risk their territorial integrity and political independence (87). Walzer uses an example to justify his general formula of a justifiable pre emptive strike. He claims that the Six Day War in 1967 was indeed a just pre emptive attack on Egypt by Israel. Israel was under real threat because Egyptian President Nasser massed an army and was positioning for attack, while simultaneously closing the Straits of Tiran to Israel, and publicizing his goal to destroy Israel. Israel went

Other protective barriers, such as dental dams, are recommended for oral sex and analingus. Some sexually transmitted infections, such as genital warts and genital herpes can be spread through skin to skin contact, not just penetrative sex. For those in committed relationships who seek only to prevent pregnancy, there are many forms of birth control, and a healthcare provider can discuss options and detail what is the ideal form of birth control. There is no single universal method that works for everyone. In his Preface, Wordsworth claims that the principle objective of his poetry was, to choose incidents and situations from common life, and to relate or describe them, throughout, as far as was possible in a selection of language really used by men, and, at the same time, to throw over them a certain coloring of imagination, whereby ordinary things should be presented to the mind in an unusual aspect. Unlike these grandiose projects, Wordsworth and Ladislaw stand for an exploration of the world through human understanding. In explaining the nature of his work, Ladislaw tells Dorothea that being a poet is having the kind of soul in which knowledge passes instantaneously into feeling, and feeling flashes back as a new organ of knowledge (142). In stating this, Eliot is in direct conversation with Wordsworth s claim regarding the objective of the Romantic poet. The Romantics believed that the physical nature of objects was intrinsically attached to the effect they had on the perceiver and the true pursuit of knowledge didn t discount either of these two aspects. Much more simple and rugged, our very well informed tour guide told us that this rangy castle was built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Order especially for battles as it is located on the border of Wallachia with Transylvania and was suffering from attacks all the time. Its narrow corridors, the low tunnel staircases and its complex construction like a labyrinth, allowed Romanians to fight the enemy with ease. In the following years, the castle was used as customs office as it is conveniently located on the Silk Road until it was taken by royal family in 1920. The Greatest Composers Of The Twentieth Century In the forty one years since his passing, Dmitri Shostakovich is one of the most widely discussed and fiercely debated composers in Western Music. For someone that is considered one of the greatest composers of the twentieth century, there lacks a consensus on the meaning of this major works; more specifically where he is being sarcastic and where he is genuine. While no other time period comes close, the novel we have been reading in class deals vigorously with dystopian society. 1984, by George Orwell, is a dystopian, fiction based book that features a main character named Winston Smith, a girl named Julia, and many others who come together to make for a very intense storyline and an intriguing read. It takes place in Oceania, in 1984, while it was written in 1948. With a sense of science fiction, it s set in near future Oceania. The city is still named London, though the country is called Airstrip One instead of England.
