The document analyzes the role of electrical vehicles in Europe using scenario analysis with the TIMES PanEU energy system model. The model projects that with current cost reductions for batteries and GHG targets, electro-mobility penetration will be low by 2030 without subsidies. More stringent GHG targets and faster battery cost decreases could increase electro-mobility shares in transport by 2030. Across scenarios, the share of renewable electricity grows significantly by 2050 to 60% of total generation in the EU. Electrical vehicles and other low-carbon transport options will be important to fully decarbonize the transport sector in line with the 2050 goal of an 80% overall GHG reduction.
