The ancient Olympics began in 776 BC in Olympia, Greece and were held every four years to honor Zeus. Only men could compete in running and later wrestling, boxing, jumping and throwing events. Winners received olive wreaths. The games ended in 394 AD but were revived in 1896 in Athens with men and women competing. Modern Olympics have gold, silver and bronze medals and the Olympic rings represent the five continents. The flame is lit in Olympia and carried to the host city where it lights the cauldron at the opening ceremony, being extinguished at the close.
