The Note On The Bench Essay
bench was the stupidest decision he had ever made. He was so starving that he had to follow the
scent of some roasted onions and ribs to keep his feet moving. The black huge box he carried with
him was attractive. Passengers walked on the street were gazing at him with an air of pity, like he
was a beggar brat, but everyone knew the box he carried was a cello box, everyone knew that he
was a musician, a homeless, poor, but tough musician. He didn't notice other people's gazes. He
accelerated his steps to track the smell of food like a grey hound, and he finally reached the source
of that luscious scent. It was from inside of a small, orchard door at the end of a dark alley of 68th
street. The door was aged and full of scratches without any windows on the wall. However, the
smell of delicious food was definitely leaking from the narrow gap under the doorstep, but he
hesitated. He hadn't decide what to offer to trade for his meal, and he knew nothing about the people
who lived inside a small apartment at the end of a dark alley in Brooklyn. He sat down, camped at
the porch, but he was exhausted so he fell asleep immediately. He dreamed about his childhood, his
first cello from his father, his small band at high school, his private studio a few years ago. He was
woken by a young girl, who was pale but still attractive, with a thick magazine curled in her right
hand. He saws the girl only dyed the nails of her third fingers with cerise, the same color of his
favorite strawberry

C. Hildren 's Literature
C hildren's literature is universally known for its "wide range of works, including acknowledged
classics of world literature, picture books and easy–to–read stories written expressly for children," in
addition to its many "fairy tales, lullabies, fables, folk songs, and other primarily orally transmitted
materials" (Encyclopedia of Literature 237). In this encyclopedic denotation, we fail to see the
presence of realistic fiction, wherein "everyday events, particularized settings, and characters from
all ranks on life" are portrayed (Segel 417). Most people hold firm to the belief that children's
literature is only limited to hope and happy endings, when it is truly unbounded and free to be
expressed in whatsoever way is possible.
Moreover, in recent debates discussing realism or mimesis in children's literature and its ongoing
aim to reflect "more accurately the random and inclusive nature of actual events and the complex
individuality of actual people" (Segel 417), the problematic issue that continues to arise is whether
realistic fiction is too realistic for the children it is ostensibly written for. Two books that are in
question specifically at the moment are Kimberly Willis Holt's My Louisiana Sky and Rita
Williams–Garcia's One Crazy Summer. In both narratives, authors Holt and Williams–Garcia take
their implied audiences (children) on a journey through explicit subject matter foreign and forbidden
in the fruitful and fantastical garden of conventional children's

Lewis And Clark Expedition Essay
As we go back in 1802 Thomas Jefferson sent an expedition to the Western part of the United States
after purchasing the land called Louisiana Territory. They were instructed to bring back maps,
plants, animals, and discover a water way from the Mississippi River to the pacific Ocean. You will
venture on an expedition back in time following Lewis and Clark as they journey through rough
weathers and landscapes. Sacagawea; a former shoshone woman until kidnapped and raised by the

Well, in July 9, 1806 at the Rocky Mountains this plant was discovered. It had a perennial (To live
for a couple years) tufted plant, with slender, leafy stems, sky blue color that bloom in the summer.
This magnificent plant was named, "The Blue Flax." The Blue Flax plant is used as cordage and
string, which caught the eye of many people. Far into the mountains is a marvelous location called
the "Tower Rock." The Tower Rock was a transition from Great PLains to unknown terrain of the
Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest. On the west side of the Missouri River approximately 8

Car-Much-Ers: A Personal Narrative-My Home
Every family has their quirks and arguments but there was something different about mine before
2005. I honestly believe they hated each other while I was seemingly caught in the middle. I'm sure
everyone knows about Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it brought to Louisiana that summer
and I'm sure it will be one of those disasters that will show up in my child's history book one day. I
was only six years old that summer and I didn't completely understand how threatening the storm
really was to our safety and lifestyle; however, I do remember the chaos of 10 dysfunctional family
members in one house–my house. My parents and I lived the furthest north and we had the most
sturdy house of all my family therefore; they all piled up at our place. Now, others won't fully
understand how alarming this really was. Imagine Kim Possible and Dr. Drakken in the same house
for five weeks, or maybe Batman and the Joker. That was my association with it. This was
completely defective and not only had my six–year–old–self known it. ... Show more content on

The Symbol Of The Confederate Flag
On September 18, 1863 Confederate soldiers stood proud at the edge of the battle field raising their
Confederate Flag in pride and hope. One hundred and fifty–four years later, that flag is now being
demonized from its true meaning by many people. Conflict about this well–known flag has been
going on for generations. In Georgia, during the Civil War, the Confederate Flag represented the
formation of the Confederacy and hope for success of the Southern states; now some people have
turned the flag into a symbol of racism, hate, and many more untrue meanings.
The idea of a Confederate Flag started 24 days after the secession of the Confederate States of
America from the United States. These states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida,
Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Since they
had yet to make a flag for their new government the Provisional Congress made the "Committee on
the Flag and Seal," directed by William Porcher Miles of South Carolina. The Committee asked for
ideas for the Confederate Flag and received hundreds of designs for the flag from ... Show more

When several people were questioned about their view of the flag some responded with pride. For
example, a Cherokee High School senior said, "The flag stands for my heritage and pride in my
southern culture". Another said, "I think it is a symbol of pride because my people stood up for
themselves" (Schall). The negative statements said about the flag include, "...it represents red–necks
and stupidity," (La Tona), "...it means slavery of African–Americans by ruthless white men and
women and their fight to keep slavery," (Sicilia). After asking someone from Quebec, Canada who
has lived in Georgia for 30 years about their thoughts on the flag they simply answered with, "It
means the south to me, nothing more."

Airline Industry : Delta Airlines
Though Delta Airlines which is my choice of Airline does not operate solely as cargo carrier
but as both passengers and Cargo carrier. Usually people ask where the difference between
passengers and cargo carrier lies and the difference is simply the schedule and types of aircrafts
used in each operation. For cargo only freighters there is no need for windows, seats and other
comforts usually expected by customers. But operating a combined passenger/cargo aircraft,
most basic requirements must be met when it comes to customer's comfort and that is where
Delta Airlines falls in this category.
Introduction:
Delta Air Lines' long history of service actually began in agriculture, when the company was
founded in 1924 as the world's first aerial crop dusting organization called Huff Daland Dusters.
In fact, if the boll weevil had not marched out of Mexico prior to the turn of this century to
devastate the cotton fields of the South, there might not have been a Delta Air Lines. When the
weevil's relentless destruction reached the Mississippi Valley, such a serious economic threat
faced the South that the Bureau of Entomology operated a laboratory in Tallulah, Louisiana, as
the base for an intensified cotton insect investigation. Directing the activities at the laboratory
was Dr. B. R. Extension Department of Coad, assisted by a young district agent with the
Louisiana State University, C. E. Woolman. Woolman, an agricultural engineering graduate of

Natural Disasters And Manmade Disasters Essay
Abstract Some or maybe all of us have been a part of some event that has taken place throughout
their existence. The events that you or other people may have taken part in have been for enjoyment
or for pleasure as for others or there are people who have gone through a series of events that has
completely ruined their lives in a matter of days. Just to throw this out there, some events that could
ruin people lives are natural disasters or manmade disasters, losing someone that you cared about
most in this world. These events leave us looking hopeless, needing a sense of direction and a big
contribution from the man upstairs. I'm here to talk to you about a natural disaster that happen just a
little over 10 years ago and the event that had taken place was Hurricane Katrina. What comes to
mind when we think of the word natural disaster? Well my take on it is that it's a major adverse
event resulting from the natural processes of the Earth. Natural disasters can claim properties,
damage the economy, and can even result in death. You know as well as I know what happened in
Hurricane Katrina. I went through it back in 2005. I'm here to research and provide a summary of
the event, to examine the precautions (preparations) that were taken beforehand when the storm was
still in the tropics, to take a look at how the local, state, and federal governments responded to the
event and talk about the recovery process and where the state of Louisiana is today. Keywords:

Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying
I agree with the statement, "At the end of A Lesson Before Dying, desolation prevails over
consolation," because the last chapters of A Lesson Before Dying had a negative and depressing
tone. According to Sidney deRogers, "He didn't pay any close attention to the black truck with the
gray tarpaulin cover, but he would tell the people at the Rainbow Club that he did feel a cold chill
when the truck went by." Basically, Sidney is saying that he felt that something was awry, or that
something wrong or evil was in that truck. The whole town knew what was happening that day and
everyone had an opinion, whether that opinion was indifferent, uneasy, or disgusted/sickened by
what was going to happen on that day. Grant says that "It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud," but
there was an overlying notion of sorrow and fear that laid over everyone in the quarter. One could
argue that the end of A Lesson Before Dying prevailed with consolation rather than desolation since
according to Paul, "He was the strongest man in that crowded room, Grant Wiggins." Paul's point is
that Jefferson died a man as a result of Grant. Despite what someone might say, I still consider this
argument to be wrong considering that Grant is still upset because Jefferson did not have a "Jury of
his peers;" everyone on that jury was white and had no concern for Jefferson's life. At the end, it
seems to me that Grant feels alone since he has spent much of the past six months with Jefferson. He
developed a strong

Kevin Mark Perron, my best friend (boyfriend), impacts my life in two ways. He teaches me
happiness and also reminds me of my place in the world. Even though many teenagers assert the
same claim, our relationship is distinctly more mature than that of many teens our age. He is often
extremely goofy but has the largest heart. Kevin is the Romeo to my Juliet, the peanut butter to my
jelly, and most importantly, he is the stars sparkling in my night sky. We met on the first day of
seventh grade, so as twelve–year olds, we did not experience revelation of love that many people
seem to relate to the meeting of soulmates. We did become close friends, however, and by the end of
seventh grade he professed his affection for me. Our relationship officially

The And Gold Tour Bus From Louisiana State University
On Losing Everything
This past week I saw that purple and gold tour bus from Louisiana State University in my town, not
only surprising me but also forcing me to think back on my childhood in the south. Growing up in
southern Louisiana one must be prepared for major storms and flooding at less than a day's notice.
Hurricanes are powerful storms that can ravish towns and can be deadly for people and animals
alike. Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, and I was in the midst of
that wreckage. My family and I were living in a small, close–knit community, named St. Amant,
about an hour west of New Orleans. On the third day of the hurricane, my family experienced a loss
greater than we could have ever imagined. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In no way do I mean to trivialize the severe and deadly effects hurricanes can potentially bring, but
not all hurricanes are the same. Most storms that would make it to the area I used to live usually lost
strength by the time it got to us. For the weaker storms, the kids would get a mini vacation from
school, and the parents got a much–needed break from work. At the time, I thought everyone in
Louisiana and especially New Orleans were not ready for what was coming. Louisiana is a laid back
state, due to its French roots. The catch–phrase for the state was always "Laissez Les Bon Temps
rouler," or "Let the good times roll!" So, it's easy to see why the media portrayed Louisianan's as
"not caring" about the tropical storm that was headed our way. We did care, we were just expecting
much less than what we received. I think a good way to describe this is that people from California
have been through many earthquakes and are prepared for them, but would you stop living your life
for a small earthquake that might not happen? Probably not. My family tried to be as prepared as we
possibly could, but there is only so much money to go around buying things for situations that might
not even happen. My dad purchased our first gasoline generator earlier that year which sadly put a
dent into our emergency savings. Nevertheless, we had enough supplies, water, and food to last
about a week if necessary. From my memories, about a week

Personal Experience: Lessons Learned From Hurricane Katrina
We all have our problems in life, whether it's lack of friends, food, or even money. That's one thing
that makes us all similar. We're all struggling in some way or another. What's important is that us
human beings are all here to help each other. That makes handling our problems much easier, right?
Wrong. It may seem trivial, but my crisis is identity. I don't know which clothes to wear, when to
wear them, or how my actions should reflect on my group of friends. I know that I have people
around me who can provide help, but what's the point of even asking? If there are young children
dying of hunger in some countries, my problem is nothing. "They are always around, and they are
always here to help," the television echoes back at me, as if answering my question. "If you happen
to get caught in this storm, try your best to find the closest wood shop center. There are quite a few
in the Couturie Forest." It was the news reporter warning everyone about a storm. Apparently, it's
supposed to be Louisiana's worst nightmare. "...It'll be strong," he continues. "With winds at around
seventy–four miles per hour, this storm will have breezes of the average hurricane. We definitely
advise all individuals to stay in their homes. The storm should occur at ... Show more content on

Personal Narrative Analysis
The human body is an amazing work of art capable of achieving extraordinary things in the most
extraordinary situations. Intra–cellular communication, processing, and reactions seem nearly
instantaneous to our conscious selves. Recognition is usually absent from the capabilities of an
impressive network of highspeed neurological highways – until a life–threatening event shocks you
into acknowledgement of those systems. There I was, on my way from Texas to South Carolina.
With bags packed and loaded and music emanating from the speakers of my truck. I energetically
departed from my point of origin towards my destination under the cover of a cool dusky sky. I
hoped to get there by morning, therefore my itinerary was comprised of a nonstop over night drive

Understandable, as it was to be conducted during hours of darkness after all; most normal folk
would be sleeping during this time. The trip involved long boring segments of highway driving.
Tractor trailers dominated the soft orange glow of the interstates. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama,
with each passing state, my eagerness to arrive at my destination grew. The more states I passed, the
more I believed I should be near my destination. My patience diminished as did my sensible
judgements on distance and time. As dawn threatened darkness, I rejected restroom or nap breaks
with the illusion of arriving at my destination. There it was, on the right side of the highway.
"Welcome to Georgia", the sign read. It gave me a sense of accomplishment. The end was near and
the sun had yet to break the horizon. One final stop, I thought, for a quick lazy breakfast on a

The Importance Of The Tower Of Pisa
The Tower of Pisa is a major cite in Italy due to its natural, but not intended, lean. The bell tower
stands at close to one hundred ninety feet tall with one side noticeable being shorter than the other.
The reason for the lean of the tower is due to the soil and weight distribution. The weight of the
building is so heavy and the soil itself was not very stable. (Urban Climatology). The stair case on
the inside of the bell tower is made of marble and took over three hundred years to be completely
built. Marble was a material that was used by ancient Greece that eventually ended up being used by
not only them, but the rest of the world also. Marble is a very smooth, hard substance that is usually
a sign of wealth. (Lezzerini). "Important to catch their dynamic response to natural actions in
general, and also to assess the effects due to pedestrian and users, and consequently to define
functional capabilities and levels of acceptable dynamic stress. The studied structure was subject to
artificial loading by synchronous movement of about 20 people." (Piroddi). This is stating that the
tower may have been affected with a lean due to people walking amongst it. Not only can soil and
the building itself have an impact on the buildings overall structure but people walking in it can also
dramatically affect it. Although the tower being on a lean is a fantastic thing to look at, its main
purpose was to be a bell tower for the near by cathedral. As the Tower of Pisa has a lean, it is

Harry Gunther : A Short Story
He promised me a future better than the one I already had. With his snow–like skin and raven–
colored hair, a man–who I would later find his name to be Harry Gunther–coaxed me with a bright
future and high hopes one July evening. A future that died in a slave pen, and hopes that faded when
a man crueler than the devil claimed as his own. I was drying clothes out in the Smith's front yard
when Mr. Gunther approached me in a black suit and tobacco–stained smile. Smiles like those were
not easily directed towards me. Being born a black girl, I was used to having wary looks thrown my
way or a racial slur uttered through gritted teeth. The latter most especially after Momma died due to
a fever five years ago when ten, and the Smiths, compassionate and caring, took me in as one of
their own in exchange for helping them around the house. When Momma got pregnant with me and
escaped the brutal South, Henry and Jenny Smith took her in, as well.
Momma used to tell me stories about how harsh and cruel those white men were, and how they used
to beat her when she "disobeyed". That was all they were–mere stories left up to the imagination.
Stories that were never supposed be tangible, because she escaped to Philadelphia so I could be free.
Mr. Gunther stood in front of me with the sun hitting his smiling face. "What's your name?" he
asked. A simple question laced with wicked intentions that would lead to much devastation. I did not

Benjamin Bush Informative Speech
On the fateful September day nine years ago, Bush's first inkling of the unfolding tragedy came as
he walked into a classroom in Florida to read to a group of young children. "On the short walk from
the motorcade to the classroom, Karl Rove mentioned that an airplane had crashed into the World
Trade Centre. That sounded strange. I envisioned a little propeller plane horribly lost," writes Bush.
But then his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, called to tell him that what he thinks is a
small plane is actually a commercial airliner. "I was stunned. That plane must have had the worst
pilot in the world. How could he possibly have flown into a skyscraper on a clear day? Maybe he
had a heart attack," writes Bush. The president may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

thinking. "I looked at the faces of the children in front of me. I thought about the contrast between
the brutality of the attacks and the innocence of those children. Millions like them would soon be
counting on me to protect them. I was determined not to let them down," Bush writes. "The reading
lesson continued, but my mind raced far from the classroom. Who could have done this? How bad
was the damage? What did the government need to do?" Bush finally leaves the class and is ushered
into another room to watch TV coverage of the attacks. The president's first impulse is to get on
television himself. "I watched in horror as the footage of the second plane hitting the south tower
replayed in slow motion. The huge fireball and explosion of smoke were worse than I had imagined.
The country would be shaken, and I needed to get on TV right away," he says. He drafted a few

Dr. R. Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln And Many...
When learning about the topic of slavery in school you hear of names like Harriet Tubman, Fredrick
Douglas, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln and many others I have not listed. I am not
taking anything away from these brave men and women and their courageous works to end the
cruelty of slavery and how they suffered but there are some who go unmentioned and their stories
are left untold. Have you ever heard of a gentleman named Solomon Northup? Most people have not
nor his story and experience with slavery. Solomon Northup was a free black man living in Saratoga
Springs, New York. Northup had a wife and three children he loved greatly. Solomon was a very
busy man, he worked long hours on a farm. Northup was an educated man who enjoyed reading
books and playing his violin in his spare time. (Northup 1–10) One day two strangers approached
Northup and asked if he would like to join them to perform in a town miles away. Solomon agrees to
join these white men on their journey to perform. Little did Solomon know that these men were in a
business where they capture free and escaped black men to make money. Beginning in 1793,
congress passed the first Fugitive Slave Act which allowed local governments to return escaped
slaves back to their rightful owners. (Histroy.com) This law was one of the many slave laws that
brought much controversy to the nation as it was expanding westward and asking how slavery
would work in the new states and if it would even be allowed.

Rhetorical Devices Used In A Change To Come By Gcse
Sam Cooke, 'A Change is Gonna Come"
Heralded by many as the anthem to the Civil Rights Movement, 'A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam
Cooke was and still is one of the most influential songs of all time. The song was originally released
in 1964 on the album 'Ain't That Good News', but was released again as a single eleven days after
Sam Cooke's untimely death on the 11th of December, 1964.
There is no other social movement so effected by pop culture in the last century than the black Civil
Rights Movement in America during the 1960s. The music at the time had political motivation and
yet it was still enjoyed widely as pop music. Sam Cooke was one of the few African American

He sings; 'I go to the movie and I go down town/Somebody keep telling me don't hang around',
referring, of course, to the incident in the Louisiana. This lyric, while seeming innocuous, spoke to
all of his coloured fans as it was a situation they were all to familiar with. The middle eight, which
reads; 'Then I go to my brother / And I say, "Brother, help me please."/ But he winds up knockin' me
/ Back down on my knees.', is a phrase highlighting the aggression the movement received from the
police force during their marches. The very people meant to "protect and serve" ended up being one
of the biggest obstacles to overcome during the notorious peace walks. Despite the air of anguish
throughout, it is a song of hope. The famed lyrics; 'It's been a long, a long time coming / But I know
a change gon' come', that appear at the end of every verse, are the bones on which the whole song is
built. Even after Cooke's death, this message remained one of positivity and aspiration. His epitaph
became a crutch for the movement to lean on instead of another reminder of all they have

What Are Jean Toomer's Struggles
1920's Struggles
During the Harlem Renaissance there were many inspirational authors, poets, and artistic influences
in the African American culture, along with women's rights. Two of which are Jean Toomer, who
wrote "Georgia Dusk" and Amy Lowell who wrote, "New Heaven's for Old." "Georgia Dusk"
portrays the lives of African Americans from an inside perspective that allows readers to grasp onto
what it was like to live with racism and diversity during that time period. While at the same time
Amy Lowell is describing her life as a women with no rights but those in the house, both views
inflict upon the idea of being unvaluable and underappreciated for being the race or gender that they
are. Jean Toomer was born in Washington, D.C., and lived from 1894–1967. While growing up with
his grandfather, Toomer never really knew his father. His grandfather had been an important
Louisiana politician during the Reconstruction era, and his mother. After high school Toomer

Coming from a powerful family Lowell is unable to do anything not asked of her. She writes about
her obligations as a women compared to those of the men in her family and her community. The
very first line reads, "I am useless" this is a powerful first statement because the reader can tell
because of the time period that it must be about black culture or women. She goes on to talk about
her life being nothing. "The fellows call for me to join them" readers can take a larger meaning form
this than what's initially thought. The fellows, referring to the men in her life, are inviting her to be
apart of what they're doing because she can't do it at her own will. Lowell describes these men as
"fresh and fulminant" they laugh, curse and and brawl. They do what they want when they want and

Descriptive Essay On The Fourth Of July
Fourth of July. It is pitch black and everyone is waiting for the sky's performance. The patriotic
American song starts in the background and I look around to see where the fireworks will start
streaming. My eyes fixate on the dazzling sparks of colors and heart–hammering noises, but the
moment that I break eye contact with the sky, I look down upon the crowd. There is a light
performance going on the ground level. A mob of phones pointed into the sky orchestrated the
performance; their lenses were a curtain to the actually performance taking place in the sky.
Realistically, these pictures will never see the light of day again. How often does someone go back

Descriptive Essay On Beach Vacation
My family has been looking forward to our annual beach vacation since last year's trip to Alabama.
Although it has been a long, winding journey for two days, hauling through five states and having a
personal concert in the passenger seat for fourteen hours, it was all worth it by the time we make it.
Beach Boulevard is overflowing with giant houses, palm trees, stores, and thousands of other
activities we are in a position to do. Everyone in the car is so antsy, we roll our windows down and
breathe in the sweet, warm Alabama air. My eyes locked on my phone, I count down the miles until
we arrive at our destination. Ten miles... Five miles... Three miles... One mile... Two–Hundred feet...
"You have arrived at your destination," Siri informs me. Pulling into the driveway, not a single soul
waits for the car to stop completely. We leap out of the vehicle, hugging my distant relatives from
Louisiana and rapidly begin sprinting down to the water. My friend, Kambri, and I are flinging sand
behind us, with the wind blasting against our faces. Finally arriving to the ocean, we stand shoulder
to shoulder along the shore, taking it all in. Silently, we listen to the continuous, calming crashes of
water, allowing it to splash up our legs, for the salty breeze to blow through our hair, and the rays of
the sun shine on our pale adolescent bodies. I have never felt more at home than I do right now, in
this moment in time.
My extended family promptly begins to unpack the loaded vehicles. Opening the wide truck
tailgates, there is not even room for a fly to buzz around back there. Stuffed to the top, the bed of the
truck was full of over packed clothes, unhealthy sugary snacks, tubs packed to the rim with bottles
of sunscreen, and of course, a plethora of sand toys. Us kids toss the bags at the top of the winding
staircase, quickly scoping out our temporary house for the week. As we make it up to our room, we
do not skip a beat unzipping our suitcases to find the superb fitted, blue bikini for our first day in
paradise. Before any adult has time to summon us back downstairs to help them finish unloading the
cars, we are out the door and headed down to the beach. On our journey down, we each grab our

The Natural Disaster Of Hurricane Katrina Essay
Some or maybe all of us have been a part of some event that has taken place throughout their
existence. The events that you or other people may have taken part in have been for enjoyment or
for pleasure as for others or there are people who have gone through a series of events that has
completely ruined their lives in a matter of days.
Keywords:

Uncle Tom's Cabin By Harriet Beecher Stowe: An Analysis
Anna approached Karolina one day with a letter from the Dowager Duchess Stéphanie de
Beauharnais addressed to Karolina. The Duchesses' spies had informed her that Karolina was in
New York City visiting Anna and so she had written to her there. Karolina opened the letter and read
it quickly. The Dowager Duchess conveyed her sympathies to Karolina on the loss of her child, as
she understood the unbearable pain she must be enduring. She also lost two sons at an early age and
still grieved for them. As Karolina, finished the letter an old clipping from a newspaper fluttered to
the ground. It was an article written by Harriet Beecher Stowe describing the death of her young
child. The Dowager Duchess described how Harriet Beecher Stowe's book "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

I don't particularly feel like talking about it because my heart can barely take all the emotion of
today. I am overwhelmed with confusion a sadness. Today my eighteen month old son died of
Cholera. As I sat cradling him in my arms for the last minutes, the last breath of his short life, I
could see the life being sucked right out of his small, frail body. His eyes were glassy and his skin
was as dry as the dust on my boots. It felt as if the life was being sucked out of me the longer I sat
there staring into his blank expression. He seemed so disconnected; So helpless. That was one of the
hardest things I have ever done. No way to help, all I could do was sit there and accept that my child
was breathing his last breaths. I referred to him as my sunshine child. At only one year and six
months, he lit up my day like the sun fills the sky with light and gives everyone a feeling of warmth.
I will never forget my baby boy. Having experienced losing someone so close to me I can
sympathize with all the poor, powerless slaves at the unjust auctions. You will always be in my heart

My Mother : A Short Story
My mother was a reader. Her favorite spot was in front of the fire on frigid days, settled with a soft
sweater and her then–best friend. Words comforted her exceptionally greater than any sweater, and
when reality failed, a book would always grow to fill the vacancy. She read to me in times like this,
on the vicious and sinister nights when thunder raged in tantrum at the entirety of the world, or after
I scuffed my skin on harsh sidewalks and even harsher people. Hercules and the Nutcracker and the
Big Nutbrown Hare, who loved his son "right up to the moon – AND back," all danced in my head
on different nights, but were all sung in the same sweet cadence of my mother's delicate voice. She
sent me on my reluctant way when I eventually learned how to decipher the silent letters and the
vowels, and I was encouraged to read on my own. My parents printed out a big chart – a calendar,
I've since learned – and we picked books. I would see how fast I could read these books: how fast I
traveled to Hogwarts, how expediently I found the buried treasure, how fast I sank the Titanic. I
could do anything that I set myself out to do with a book, so I did it all. I was the resident Egyptian
archeologist, the walking compilation of every horror book in the library, the archer from medieval
England, and I knew I could be even more. So I read. My mother was a singer. Every night she
would come into my bedroom to sing a lullaby of Edelweiss, even beautiful when her melodious lilt

Sam Cooke Meaning
A Change is Gonna to Come It's hard to listen to songs about slavery or the civil rights movement
without imaging the hardships and the unfairness that African American had to go through. Sam
Cooke did that, writing a song that grads your attention and later after Cooke's death would come
more popular. He had a vision for the African Americans, and was not afraid to sing about what he
felt was right. Sam Cooke's song "A Change is Gonna to Come" was a song of protest. For the
African Americans that were fighting for their rights. He wrote this song to support the civil rights
movements. Not just for his self, but for all blacks that was affected by the unfairness. He wanted to
capture the frustrations he had and he was not afraid of a challenge. Before the Civil Rights Act of
1964, segregation in the U.S was mostly in the Southern states. The segregation was supposed to be
separate but equal. But that is not how it was. Blacks in the south were discriminated against and the
law did nothing to protect their rights as individuals. The civil rights act of 1964, stated that all
public places including public schools were desegregated. This meant that employer may not deny a

I Am Proud At The University Of Wisconsin- Madison Essay

life in southern Louisiana. My early formative years were passed in New Orleans, where I was born,
before a move upstate Louisiana at the age of seven. It was a month before my turning of this age
that proved to be one of the most arduous weeks of my life. I remember the pain quite vividly and
am not sure how I persevered at such a young age. At the beginning of that week, my mother
stormed into the house sweating and with a frantic look on her face. In a startled tone that I was not
used to, she alerted that we had to go because there was a storm coming. I grabbed my blanket, as
many bags of goldfish that I could carry, and some clothes and shoved it all in my backpack. While
quickly walking to the car, I asked my mother in an out–of–breath tone, where we were going and
she replied "to the stadium, hun." I couldn't believe it, I was so excited to be going to the
Superdome. I remember always wanting to go to a game there with my father to watch our favorite
team, the New Orleans Saints. When rushing out of the house and being buckled into my booster
seat, I did not realize that I was leaving my house for last time. I remember arriving at the

Example Of Personal Narrative Essay For College
For years I had been hiking the same dull, barren trail. There was nothing to see besides the empty,
looming trees on either side of the path and nothing to hear besides the constant crunch of dead
leaves underfoot. Day after day, I marched aimlessly; however, I soon stumbled upon a divergent
road. The contrast was astonishing. Where my current pathway was monotonous, the other was
alive. Its trees were blazing with vibrant auburns and golds, and some of their leaves danced in the
wind. Patches of daisies and dandelions peaked out from underneath piles of fallen leaves. I was
entranced by the warm kiss of the sun, the rich smell of flowers, and the chatter of woodland
creatures. It held a secret: the wondrous beauty of life. Although I was not sure what this trail would
hold for me later on, I was eager to embark on this new journey. I started by letting go of the forces
that weighed me down. With every burden I shed, the colors seemed to grow impossibly brighter.
Finally, I was happily strolling down the path to who I would become. No longer was I pressured by
others' expectations. No longer did I stress over disappointing or pleasing those around me.. I was

An Examination of the Music of Garth Brooks Essay
For generations, singers and songwriters of country music have been working to evoke emotions in
listeners by performing and writing songs that the listeners will be able to relate to. Country music
traditionally reveals stories of life, love, death, and values, all of which can be seen in the works of
great singers and songwriters like George Strait, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and Alan Jackson. One
artist in particular, Garth Brooks, forever left his stamp on country music and on the hearts of his
millions of listeners with his hit songs, "The Beaches of Cheyenne", "Callin' Baton Rouge", and

listeners should feel. The tempo of the song varies throughout, starting high, turning lower, and then

range of musical notes. Lyrically, the song tells a story that conveys many strong emotions and

Saint Augustine Of Hippo Once Stated
Saint Augustine of Hippo once stated, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only
one page." It was after stumbling across this statement that I was influenced to call up my friend and
suggest a road trip.
When we started off, it was a beautiful day. The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian
mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still
perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards
Tennessee.
My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood
song blaring from the radio. It was the radio's job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the
morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride.
Sarah had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia.
"Hey, Allyson," she called as she shook my shoulders, "it would be nice if you woke up, so I could
take a nap."
I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response.
"I can just drive right back to Pennsylvania. We don't have to take a road trip."
That got me up. I had so much invested into this trip like money and time.
I sat in the driver's seat and watched the road continuously channel under the car sort of like a
conveyor belt. It was hypnotizing, just keeping my eye on the road. Before either Sarah or I knew it,
we were already parked in front of our hotel in Gatlinburg,

Hunting Research Paper
Hunting is when you search for animals and kill them. Though Bambi may have been a cute Disney
cartoon, imagine how much better he would look on your plate with a little bit of catsup and alot of
red wine. Lets face it venison is refined crude deer. Deer are pointless. Sure the deer is pretty
coming out of the woods (if they don't destroy your car) but they are far more pretty coming out of
the oven, and they also smell a lot better too. In addition, they don't fit in your fish tank, they won't
wear leashes, and they'd surely stink up the litter box (obviously, they are not as dainty or as subtle
as cats). Contrary to Mr. Disney's propaganda they really can't act and they never break into song.

These people are bleeding hearts from the the Northeast. They are women or they are like women.
Woman are strangely attracted to pretty things that guys like me could care less about, like deer, or
candles. For example, I remember driving my girlfriend all over Lafayette, Louisiana. We'd walk
into every restaurant and she'd reject it. Was it food? No way. She just wanted a place with candles
at the table. All I wanted was a TV at the bar so I could sneak glances at the game while pretending
to be admiring her. She also likes deer. We didn't find candles, but I did find a place that serves
venison.
It is evident that hunting is good because the law says how many deer you can hunt. The right
amount to hunt is six deer per season. Here in Louisiana you are allowed to shoot one buck and one
doe per season.
Hunting is good because it is our traditional way of life. Father's like bringing their sons hunting. I
remember the first time I went hunting with my father. I saw the deer standing their. It was a
beautiful day. My father said shoot it. I told him I didn't want to. He said, "What are you, one of

Why Was The War Of 1812 Important
The War of 1812, otherwise known as the Second War of Independence was a war that should of
ended long before it actually did. This is because Britain sent a letter to the United States that said
they wanted to withdraw from having a war, but because there was such a long time difference from
when the letter was sent and when it was received the United States started war a little bit to soon,
and didn't receive the letter in time. Speaking of writing, I was tasked to figure out whether the War
of 1812 is important enough to leave in the history book. Some people say it is a waste of paper, ink,
and other materials. I could understand these reasons because the prices of these items is sky–
rocketing. In my opinion I do not think the War of 1812 should be taken out of the history book

Well, there are many reasons the United States got involved. It all started with the British putting

impressment, seizing and stealing people off of our ships was the right idea, all because British

Theme Of In My Father's House By Ernest Gaines
Introduction
Throughout his public writing, Ernest Gaines has been consistently asked about the themes of his
novels and short stories. Because of his desire to express Black manhood, interviewers and critics
have recognized Gaines as a current fiction voice for
African American men. In a 1990 interview with Marcia Gaudet, Gaines addressed this trend,
saying, .I think I know more about the black male because I am male myself. I know something
about his dreams. I listened to them when I was a kid growing up, I.ve drunk with him, I.ve been in
the army and athletics–I know what men dream about. All men dream about certain things. All men
have hopes.. (43). Gaines's decision to address the struggle of Black males begins in his own
experience as a man and expands to include the dreams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, Gaines is quick to admit that the novel had been ..kicking my ass for ten years.. (Tooker

As a child on the plantation and ancestor of slaves, Gaines experienced firsthand the struggles of
fathers and sons because of slavery. This conflict, seen in In My Father's
House, was a subject Gaines knew he had to approach. Eventually, Gaines decided to model his
book after a Greek tragedy. Like the characters of Greek tragedies, Phillip
Martin is a great man who falls and must get himself back up. Although Gaines devoted much time
to the novel, and approached a subject that has disturbed him, he still does not like to talk about or
read from the novel. In an interview with Mary Doyle, Gaines says,
..That book is a hard one for me to talk about. I don't ever read from it when I go to colleges and
universities. It is a book that I had to write because I was haunted by the idea. It cost me more time
and pain than any book I've written. (162). Gaines's
audience's reaction to the novel is similar to the pain Gaines experienced while creating the
characters. The story reminds his audience that a man is more than a father. He is

Personal Narrative: A Whole New Culture

The parade starting time was around 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. We had arrived early to tour the Downtown
of Minden, Louisiana. Seeing all the historical buildings made me realize that this was a very
remarkable place for the parade. As we walked around the streets, we saw many kinds of foods: hot

The end of the parade neared, and I was greatly saddened. The time had passed so quickly since I
was greatly enjoying myself. My uncle noticed my disappointed look at said "Don't worry Jay, there
are numerous parades throughout Louisiana. Mardi Gras goes on for two weeks!" This surely made
me smile and realize how enjoyable the parade had been.
During the night after the parade, I had several dreams about various things such as: color beads to
glimmering lights to marching floats. It was as if I was reliving my Mardi Gras's experience yet
again. After waking up from a very entertaining session of dreams, I heard from my sister that I was
speaking in my sleep. Although, I found this part unbelievable and greatly

The Note On The Bench Essay

  • 1. The Note On The Bench Essay bench was the stupidest decision he had ever made. He was so starving that he had to follow the scent of some roasted onions and ribs to keep his feet moving. The black huge box he carried with him was attractive. Passengers walked on the street were gazing at him with an air of pity, like he was a beggar brat, but everyone knew the box he carried was a cello box, everyone knew that he was a musician, a homeless, poor, but tough musician. He didn't notice other people's gazes. He accelerated his steps to track the smell of food like a grey hound, and he finally reached the source of that luscious scent. It was from inside of a small, orchard door at the end of a dark alley of 68th street. The door was aged and full of scratches without any windows on the wall. However, the smell of delicious food was definitely leaking from the narrow gap under the doorstep, but he hesitated. He hadn't decide what to offer to trade for his meal, and he knew nothing about the people who lived inside a small apartment at the end of a dark alley in Brooklyn. He sat down, camped at the porch, but he was exhausted so he fell asleep immediately. He dreamed about his childhood, his first cello from his father, his small band at high school, his private studio a few years ago. He was woken by a young girl, who was pale but still attractive, with a thick magazine curled in her right hand. He saws the girl only dyed the nails of her third fingers with cerise, the same color of his favorite strawberry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. C. Hildren 's Literature C hildren's literature is universally known for its "wide range of works, including acknowledged classics of world literature, picture books and easy–to–read stories written expressly for children," in addition to its many "fairy tales, lullabies, fables, folk songs, and other primarily orally transmitted materials" (Encyclopedia of Literature 237). In this encyclopedic denotation, we fail to see the presence of realistic fiction, wherein "everyday events, particularized settings, and characters from all ranks on life" are portrayed (Segel 417). Most people hold firm to the belief that children's literature is only limited to hope and happy endings, when it is truly unbounded and free to be expressed in whatsoever way is possible. Moreover, in recent debates discussing realism or mimesis in children's literature and its ongoing aim to reflect "more accurately the random and inclusive nature of actual events and the complex individuality of actual people" (Segel 417), the problematic issue that continues to arise is whether realistic fiction is too realistic for the children it is ostensibly written for. Two books that are in question specifically at the moment are Kimberly Willis Holt's My Louisiana Sky and Rita Williams–Garcia's One Crazy Summer. In both narratives, authors Holt and Williams–Garcia take their implied audiences (children) on a journey through explicit subject matter foreign and forbidden in the fruitful and fantastical garden of conventional children's ... They were instructed to bring back maps, plants, animals, and discover a water way from the Mississippi River to the pacific Ocean. You will venture on an expedition back in time following Lewis and Clark as they journey through rough weathers and landscapes. Sacagawea; a former shoshone woman until kidnapped and raised by the Hidatsa Tribe. Now welcome to the Corps Discovery! AAleutian Canada Goose was encountered in March 8, 1806. The Blue Flax plant is used as cordage and string, which caught the eye of many people. Far into the mountains is a marvelous location called the "Tower Rock." The women were scared, but relaxed when they saw Sacagawea and her son. This tribe was a nomadic tribe that would always move. Shoshone traded with the Spanish and were a poor tribe. I honestly believe they hated each other while I was seemingly caught in the middle. I'm sure everyone knows about Hurricane Katrina and the devastation it brought to Louisiana that summer and I'm sure it will be one of those disasters that will show up in my child's history book one day. I was only six years old that summer and I didn't completely understand how threatening the storm really was to our safety and lifestyle; however, I do remember the chaos of 10 dysfunctional family members in one house–my house. My parents and I lived the furthest north and we had the most sturdy house of all my family therefore; they all piled up at our place. Now, others won't fully understand how alarming this really was. Imagine Kim Possible and Dr. Drakken in the same house for five weeks, or maybe Batman and the Joker. That was my association with it. • 13. The Symbol Of The Confederate Flag On September 18, 1863 Confederate soldiers stood proud at the edge of the battle field raising their Confederate Flag in pride and hope. One hundred and fifty–four years later, that flag is now being demonized from its true meaning by many people. Conflict about this well–known flag has been going on for generations. In Georgia, during the Civil War, the Confederate Flag represented the formation of the Confederacy and hope for success of the Southern states; now some people have turned the flag into a symbol of racism, hate, and many more untrue meanings. The idea of a Confederate Flag started 24 days after the secession of the Confederate States of America from the United States. These states included South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Since they had yet to make a flag for their new government the Provisional Congress made the "Committee on the Flag and Seal," directed by William Porcher Miles of South Carolina. The Committee asked for ideas for the Confederate Flag and received hundreds of designs for the flag from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, a Cherokee High School senior said, "The flag stands for my heritage and pride in my southern culture". Another said, "I think it is a symbol of pride because my people stood up for themselves" (Schall). The negative statements said about the flag include, "...it represents red–necks and stupidity," (La Tona), "...it means slavery of African–Americans by ruthless white men and women and their fight to keep slavery," (Sicilia). After asking someone from Quebec, Canada who has lived in Georgia for 30 years about their thoughts on the flag they simply answered with, "It means the south to me, nothing more." ... • 15. Airline Industry : Delta Airlines Though Delta Airlines which is my choice of Airline does not operate solely as cargo carrier but as both passengers and Cargo carrier. Usually people ask where the difference between passengers and cargo carrier lies and the difference is simply the schedule and types of aircrafts used in each operation. For cargo only freighters there is no need for windows, seats and other comforts usually expected by customers. But operating a combined passenger/cargo aircraft, most basic requirements must be met when it comes to customer's comfort and that is where Delta Airlines falls in this category. Introduction: Delta Air Lines' long history of service actually began in agriculture, when the company was founded in 1924 as the world's first aerial crop dusting organization called Huff Daland Dusters. In fact, if the boll weevil had not marched out of Mexico prior to the turn of this century to devastate the cotton fields of the South, there might not have been a Delta Air Lines. When the weevil's relentless destruction reached the Mississippi Valley, such a serious economic threat faced the South that the Bureau of Entomology operated a laboratory in Tallulah, Louisiana, as the base for an intensified cotton insect investigation. Directing the activities at the laboratory was Dr. B. R. Extension Department of Coad, assisted by a young district agent with the Louisiana State University, C. E. Woolman. • 17. Natural Disasters And Manmade Disasters Essay Abstract Some or maybe all of us have been a part of some event that has taken place throughout their existence. The events that you or other people may have taken part in have been for enjoyment or for pleasure as for others or there are people who have gone through a series of events that has completely ruined their lives in a matter of days. Just to throw this out there, some events that could ruin people lives are natural disasters or manmade disasters, losing someone that you cared about most in this world. These events leave us looking hopeless, needing a sense of direction and a big contribution from the man upstairs. I'm here to talk to you about a natural disaster that happen just a little over 10 years ago and the event that had taken place was Hurricane Katrina. What comes to mind when we think of the word natural disaster? Well my take on it is that it's a major adverse event resulting from the natural processes of the Earth. Natural disasters can claim properties, damage the economy, and can even result in death. You know as well as I know what happened in Hurricane Katrina. I went through it back in 2005. I'm here to research and provide a summary of the event, to examine the precautions (preparations) that were taken beforehand when the storm was still in the tropics, to take a look at how the local, state, and federal governments responded to the event and talk about the recovery process and where the state of Louisiana is today. • 19. Analysis Of A Lesson Before Dying I agree with the statement, "At the end of A Lesson Before Dying, desolation prevails over consolation," because the last chapters of A Lesson Before Dying had a negative and depressing tone. According to Sidney deRogers, "He didn't pay any close attention to the black truck with the gray tarpaulin cover, but he would tell the people at the Rainbow Club that he did feel a cold chill when the truck went by." Basically, Sidney is saying that he felt that something was awry, or that something wrong or evil was in that truck. The whole town knew what was happening that day and everyone had an opinion, whether that opinion was indifferent, uneasy, or disgusted/sickened by what was going to happen on that day. Grant says that "It was a nice day. Blue sky. Not a cloud," but there was an overlying notion of sorrow and fear that laid over everyone in the quarter. One could argue that the end of A Lesson Before Dying prevailed with consolation rather than desolation since according to Paul, "He was the strongest man in that crowded room, Grant Wiggins." Paul's point is that Jefferson died a man as a result of Grant. Despite what someone might say, I still consider this argument to be wrong considering that Grant is still upset because Jefferson did not have a "Jury of his peers;" everyone on that jury was white and had no concern for Jefferson's life. At the end, it seems to me that Grant feels alone since he has spent much of the past six months with Jefferson. He developed a strong ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Even though many teenagers assert the same claim, our relationship is distinctly more mature than that of many teens our age. He is often extremely goofy but has the largest heart. Kevin is the Romeo to my Juliet, the peanut butter to my jelly, and most importantly, he is the stars sparkling in my night sky. We met on the first day of seventh grade, so as twelve–year olds, we did not experience revelation of love that many people seem to relate to the meeting of soulmates. • 23. The And Gold Tour Bus From Louisiana State University On Losing Everything This past week I saw that purple and gold tour bus from Louisiana State University in my town, not only surprising me but also forcing me to think back on my childhood in the south. Growing up in southern Louisiana one must be prepared for major storms and flooding at less than a day's notice. Hurricanes are powerful storms that can ravish towns and can be deadly for people and animals alike. Hurricane Katrina tore through the Gulf Coast in August of 2005, and I was in the midst of that wreckage. My family and I were living in a small, close–knit community, named St. Amant, about an hour west of New Orleans. On the third day of the hurricane, my family experienced a loss greater than we could have ever imagined. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In no way do I mean to trivialize the severe and deadly effects hurricanes can potentially bring, but not all hurricanes are the same. Most storms that would make it to the area I used to live usually lost strength by the time it got to us. For the weaker storms, the kids would get a mini vacation from school, and the parents got a much–needed break from work. At the time, I thought everyone in Louisiana and especially New Orleans were not ready for what was coming. Louisiana is a laid back state, due to its French roots. The catch–phrase for the state was always "Laissez Les Bon Temps rouler," or "Let the good times roll!" So, it's easy to see why the media portrayed Louisianan's as "not caring" about the tropical storm that was headed our way. We did care, we were just expecting much less than what we received. I think a good way to describe this is that people from California have been through many earthquakes and are prepared for them, but would you stop living your life for a small earthquake that might not happen? Probably not. My family tried to be as prepared as we possibly could, but there is only so much money to go around buying things for situations that might not even happen. My dad purchased our first gasoline generator earlier that year which sadly put a dent into our emergency savings. • 25. Personal Experience: Lessons Learned From Hurricane Katrina We all have our problems in life, whether it's lack of friends, food, or even money. That's one thing that makes us all similar. We're all struggling in some way or another. What's important is that us human beings are all here to help each other. That makes handling our problems much easier, right? Wrong. It may seem trivial, but my crisis is identity. I don't know which clothes to wear, when to wear them, or how my actions should reflect on my group of friends. I know that I have people around me who can provide help, but what's the point of even asking? If there are young children dying of hunger in some countries, my problem is nothing. "They are always around, and they are always here to help," the television echoes back at me, as if answering my question. "If you happen to get caught in this storm, try your best to find the closest wood shop center. There are quite a few in the Couturie Forest." It was the news reporter warning everyone about a storm. Apparently, it's supposed to be Louisiana's worst nightmare. "...It'll be strong," he continues. Out of all the students I could've associated myself with, I decided to sit at a table with the 'rebellious' kids. I knew in my gut that it was a bad decision, but what other choice did I have? Intra–cellular communication, processing, and reactions seem nearly instantaneous to our conscious selves. There I was, on my way from Texas to South Carolina. With bags packed and loaded and music emanating from the speakers of my truck. • 29. The Importance Of The Tower Of Pisa The Tower of Pisa is a major cite in Italy due to its natural, but not intended, lean. The bell tower stands at close to one hundred ninety feet tall with one side noticeable being shorter than the other. The reason for the lean of the tower is due to the soil and weight distribution. The weight of the building is so heavy and the soil itself was not very stable. (Urban Climatology). The stair case on the inside of the bell tower is made of marble and took over three hundred years to be completely built. Marble was a material that was used by ancient Greece that eventually ended up being used by not only them, but the rest of the world also. Marble is a very smooth, hard substance that is usually a sign of wealth. (Lezzerini). "Important to catch their dynamic response to natural actions in general, and also to assess the effects due to pedestrian and users, and consequently to define functional capabilities and levels of acceptable dynamic stress. The studied structure was subject to artificial loading by synchronous movement of about 20 people." (Piroddi). This is stating that the tower may have been affected with a lean due to people walking amongst it. Not only can soil and the building itself have an impact on the buildings overall structure but people walking in it can also dramatically affect it. Although the tower being on a lean is a fantastic thing to look at, its main purpose was to be a bell tower for the near by cathedral. As the Tower of Pisa has a lean, it is ... • 31. Harry Gunther : A Short Story He promised me a future better than the one I already had. With his snow–like skin and raven– colored hair, a man–who I would later find his name to be Harry Gunther–coaxed me with a bright future and high hopes one July evening. A future that died in a slave pen, and hopes that faded when a man crueler than the devil claimed as his own. I was drying clothes out in the Smith's front yard when Mr. Gunther approached me in a black suit and tobacco–stained smile. Smiles like those were not easily directed towards me. Being born a black girl, I was used to having wary looks thrown my way or a racial slur uttered through gritted teeth. The latter most especially after Momma died due to a fever five years ago when ten, and the Smiths, compassionate and caring, took me in as one of their own in exchange for helping them around the house. When Momma got pregnant with me and escaped the brutal South, Henry and Jenny Smith took her in, as well. Momma used to tell me stories about how harsh and cruel those white men were, and how they used to beat her when she "disobeyed". That was all they were–mere stories left up to the imagination. Stories that were never supposed be tangible, because she escaped to Philadelphia so I could be free. Mr. Gunther stood in front of me with the sun hitting his smiling face. "What's your name?" he asked. A simple question laced with wicked intentions that would lead to much devastation. I did not respond him, for I did not know how to. For the most ... Benjamin Bush Informative Speech On the fateful September day nine years ago, Bush's first inkling of the unfolding tragedy came as he walked into a classroom in Florida to read to a group of young children. "On the short walk from the motorcade to the classroom, Karl Rove mentioned that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Centre. That sounded strange. I envisioned a little propeller plane horribly lost," writes Bush. But then his national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, called to tell him that what he thinks is a small plane is actually a commercial airliner. "I was stunned. That plane must have had the worst pilot in the world. How could he possibly have flown into a skyscraper on a clear day? Maybe he had a heart attack," writes Bush. The president may ... I was determined not to let them down," Bush writes. "The reading lesson continued, but my mind raced far from the classroom. Who could have done this? How bad was the damage? What did the government need to do?" Bush finally leaves the class and is ushered into another room to watch TV coverage of the attacks. The president's first impulse is to get on television himself. "I watched in horror as the footage of the second plane hitting the south tower replayed in slow motion. The huge fireball and explosion of smoke were worse than I had imagined. When learning about the topic of slavery in school you hear of names like Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Abraham Lincoln and many others I have not listed. I am not taking anything away from these brave men and women and their courageous works to end the cruelty of slavery and how they suffered but there are some who go unmentioned and their stories are left untold. Have you ever heard of a gentleman named Solomon Northup? Most people have not nor his story and experience with slavery. Solomon Northup was a free black man living in Saratoga Springs, New York. Northup had a wife and three children he loved greatly. Solomon was a very busy man, he worked long hours on a farm. Northup was an educated man who enjoyed reading books and playing his violin in his spare time. (Northup 1–10) One day two strangers approached Northup and asked if he would like to join them to perform in a town miles away. Solomon agrees to join these white men on their journey to perform. Little did Solomon know that these men were in a business where they capture free and escaped black men to make money. Beginning in 1793, congress passed the first Fugitive Slave Act which allowed local governments to return escaped slaves back to their rightful owners. Rhetorical Devices Used In A Change To Come By Gcse Sam Cooke, 'A Change is Gonna Come" Heralded by many as the anthem to the Civil Rights Movement, 'A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke was and still is one of the most influential songs of all time. The song was originally released in 1964 on the album 'Ain't That Good News', but was released again as a single eleven days after Sam Cooke's untimely death on the 11th of December, 1964. There is no other social movement so effected by pop culture in the last century than the black Civil Rights Movement in America during the 1960s. The music at the time had political motivation and yet it was still enjoyed widely as pop music. Sam Cooke was one of the few African American artists of his generation to successfully crossover and reach both a white and black audience. The middle eight, which reads; 'Then I go to my brother / And I say, "Brother, help me please."/ But he winds up knockin' me / Back down on my knees.', is a phrase highlighting the aggression the movement received from the police force during their marches. The very people meant to "protect and serve" ended up being one of the biggest obstacles to overcome during the notorious peace walks. Despite the air of anguish throughout, it is a song of hope. The famed lyrics; 'It's been a long, a long time coming / But I know a change gon' come', that appear at the end of every verse, are the bones on which the whole song is built. What Are Jean Toomer's Struggles 1920's Struggles During the Harlem Renaissance there were many inspirational authors, poets, and artistic influences in the African American culture, along with women's rights. Two of which are Jean Toomer, who wrote "Georgia Dusk" and Amy Lowell who wrote, "New Heaven's for Old." Silently, we listen to the continuous, calming crashes of water, allowing it to splash up our legs, for the salty breeze to blow through our hair, and the rays of the sun shine on our pale adolescent bodies. I have never felt more at home than I do right now, in this moment in time. My extended family promptly begins to unpack the loaded vehicles. She read to me in times like this, on the vicious and sinister nights when thunder raged in tantrum at the entirety of the world, or after I scuffed my skin on harsh sidewalks and even harsher people. Hercules and the Nutcracker and the Big Nutbrown Hare, who loved his son "right up to the moon – AND back," all danced in my head on different nights, but were all sung in the same sweet cadence of my mother's delicate voice. Sam Cooke did that, writing a song that grads your attention and later after Cooke's death would come more popular. He had a vision for the African Americans, and was not afraid to sing about what he felt was right. Sam Cooke's song "A Change is Gonna to Come" was a song of protest. The segregation was supposed to be separate but equal. But that is not how it was. Blacks in the south were discriminated against and the law did nothing to protect their rights as individuals. I was entranced by the warm kiss of the sun, the rich smell of flowers, and the chatter of woodland creatures. It held a secret: the wondrous beauty of life. Although I was not sure what this trail would hold for me later on, I was eager to embark on this new journey. I started by letting go of the forces that weighed me down. With every burden I shed, the colors seemed to grow impossibly brighter. Finally, I was happily strolling down the path to who I would become. No longer was I pressured by others' expectations. No longer did I stress over disappointing or pleasing those around me.. I was free to pursue my own satisfactions and set my own standards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An Examination of the Music of Garth Brooks Essay For generations, singers and songwriters of country music have been working to evoke emotions in listeners by performing and writing songs that the listeners will be able to relate to. Country music traditionally reveals stories of life, love, death, and values, all of which can be seen in the works of great singers and songwriters like George Strait, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and Alan Jackson. One artist in particular, Garth Brooks, forever left his stamp on country music and on the hearts of his millions of listeners with his hit songs, "The Beaches of Cheyenne", "Callin' Baton Rouge", and "The River". There is a strong presence of the fiddle and steel guitar in the song which helps direct emotions, that is to say it helps guide how listeners should feel. The tempo of the song varies throughout, starting high, turning lower, and then returning high. • 68. Saint Augustine Of Hippo Once Stated Saint Augustine of Hippo once stated, "The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page." It was after stumbling across this statement that I was influenced to call up my friend and suggest a road trip. When we started off, it was a beautiful day. The bright morning sun peeked over the Appalachian mountains to bid us farewell as we packed our belongings into the 2011 Chevy Cruze. Dew still perched on the delicate leaves of various summer flowers while we rode down the road towards Tennessee. My friend Sarah drove. Her fingers tapped the steering wheel in rhythm to the Carrie Underwood song blaring from the radio. It was the radio's job to keep us awake since we had left so early in the morning; however, it was not doing a good job as I fell asleep only twenty minutes into the ride. Sarah had to wake me up at the rest stop just outside of Roanoke, Virginia. "Hey, Allyson," she called as she shook my shoulders, "it would be nice if you woke up, so I could take a nap." I just mumbled an incoherent string of words in response. "I can just drive right back to Pennsylvania. We don't have to take a road trip." That got me up. I had so much invested into this trip like money and time. I sat in the driver's seat and watched the road continuously channel under the car sort of like a conveyor belt. It was hypnotizing, just keeping my eye on the road. Before either Sarah or I knew it, we were already parked in front of our hotel in Gatlinburg, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Hunting Research Paper Hunting is when you search for animals and kill them. Though Bambi may have been a cute Disney cartoon, imagine how much better he would look on your plate with a little bit of catsup and alot of red wine. Lets face it venison is refined crude deer. Deer are pointless. Sure the deer is pretty coming out of the woods (if they don't destroy your car) but they are far more pretty coming out of the oven, and they also smell a lot better too. In addition, they don't fit in your fish tank, they won't wear leashes, and they'd surely stink up the litter box (obviously, they are not as dainty or as subtle as cats). Contrary to Mr. Disney's propaganda they really can't act and they never break into song. It's more than likely that when you do kill ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These people are bleeding hearts from the the Northeast. They are women or they are like women. Woman are strangely attracted to pretty things that guys like me could care less about, like deer, or candles. For example, I remember driving my girlfriend all over Lafayette, Louisiana. We'd walk into every restaurant and she'd reject it. Was it food? No way. She just wanted a place with candles at the table. All I wanted was a TV at the bar so I could sneak glances at the game while pretending to be admiring her. She also likes deer. We didn't find candles, but I did find a place that serves venison. It is evident that hunting is good because the law says how many deer you can hunt. The right amount to hunt is six deer per season. Here in Louisiana you are allowed to shoot one buck and one doe per season. Hunting is good because it is our traditional way of life. Father's like bringing their sons hunting. I remember the first time I went hunting with my father. I saw the deer standing their. It was a beautiful day. My father said shoot it. I told him I didn't want to. He said, "What are you, one of them girls from the Northeast?" I said that I wasn't. He said, "Shoot the deer or we don't eat dinner." I said, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Why Was The War Of 1812 Important The War of 1812, otherwise known as the Second War of Independence was a war that should of ended long before it actually did. This is because Britain sent a letter to the United States that said they wanted to withdraw from having a war, but because there was such a long time difference from when the letter was sent and when it was received the United States started war a little bit to soon, and didn't receive the letter in time. Speaking of writing, I was tasked to figure out whether the War of 1812 is important enough to leave in the history book. Some people say it is a waste of paper, ink, and other materials. I could understand these reasons because the prices of these items is sky– rocketing. In my opinion I do not think the War of 1812 should be taken out of the history book based on my research and what I have learned. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well, there are many reasons the United States got involved. It all started with the British putting trade restrictions on the United States when they wanted to trade with France. The British made the U.S. pay fees to pass through Britain to get to France. Then the royal British Navy had an idea that impressment, seizing and stealing people off of our ships was the right idea, all because British didn't show any respect towards their soldiers, making the soldiers leave. Finally the U.S. just didn't like that the British kept supplying the Native Americans with supplies to keep pressure on the U.S. All in All the U.S. didn't like the way British were handling the ... • 74. Theme Of In My Father's House By Ernest Gaines Introduction Throughout his public writing, Ernest Gaines has been consistently asked about the themes of his novels and short stories. Because of his desire to express Black manhood, interviewers and critics have recognized Gaines as a current fiction voice for African American men. In a 1990 interview with Marcia Gaudet, Gaines addressed this trend, saying, .I think I know more about the black male because I am male myself. I know something about his dreams. I listened to them when I was a kid growing up, I.ve drunk with him, I.ve been in the army and athletics–I know what men dream about. All men dream about certain things. All men have hopes.. (43). Gaines's decision to address the struggle of Black males begins in his own experience as a man and expands to include the dreams ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, Gaines is quick to admit that the novel had been ..kicking my ass for ten years.. (Tooker 100). As a child on the plantation and ancestor of slaves, Gaines experienced firsthand the struggles of fathers and sons because of slavery. This conflict, seen in In My Father's House, was a subject Gaines knew he had to approach. Eventually, Gaines decided to model his book after a Greek tragedy. Like the characters of Greek tragedies, Phillip Martin is a great man who falls and must get himself back up. Although Gaines devoted much time to the novel, and approached a subject that has disturbed him, he still does not like to talk about or read from the novel. In an interview with Mary Doyle, Gaines says, ..That book is a hard one for me to talk about. I don't ever read from it when I go to colleges and universities. It is a book that I had to write because I was haunted by the idea. It cost me more time and pain than any book I've written. (162). Gaines's audience's reaction to the novel is similar to the pain Gaines experienced while creating the characters. The story reminds his audience that a man is more than a father. He is ... The game was just about to begin, me and my team was eagle eyeing the bomb squad. It was so quiet that you could hear your own sweat hitting the bench. The umpire broke up everyone's concentration by saying, "play ball"! The defense had ran out on the field and I started rolling ground balls from 2nd to short–stop to third base. They had all made good throws back to me and then I threw the ball into the dug–out because the game had begun. Nate had threw the first pitch. Wackk. They had hit the ball right back to me and I ran touched first base. I threw the ball back to Nate to pitch it again and Crack They had hit a sky rocket and it can soring down like and eagle. • 78. Personal Narrative: A Whole New Culture In 2008, I was given an opportunity to learn about a whole new culture. My family had recently moved from India, and we were new to the American concepts. The Mardi Gras Parade was approaching. My uncle decided that it would be a great idea for our whole family to go see the parade to get settled in America. My family and I were greatly thrilled and accepted the offer without hesitation. The parade starting time was around 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. We had arrived early to tour the Downtown of Minden, Louisiana. Seeing all the historical buildings made me realize that this was a very remarkable place for the parade. As we walked around the streets, we saw many kinds of foods: hot dogs, Cajun fries, and funnel cakes. This was my first perception of these new types of food, so I eagerly asked my uncle to buy some. The end of the parade neared, and I was greatly saddened. The time had passed so quickly since I was greatly enjoying myself. My uncle noticed my disappointed look at said "Don't worry Jay, there are numerous parades throughout Louisiana. Mardi Gras goes on for two weeks!" This surely made me smile and realize how enjoyable the parade had been. During the night after the parade, I had several dreams about various things such as: color beads to glimmering lights to marching floats. It was as if I was reliving my Mardi Gras's experience yet again. After waking up from a very entertaining session of dreams, I heard from my sister that I was speaking in my sleep.
