THE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT
IN INDO-CHINA

• Indo china comprises Vietnam,Laos and Cambodia.
• This lesson introduce u about one of the important states
of the peninsula, Vietnam.
• Vietnam got its independence in 1945.
Relation To China
• Earlier Vietnamese people generally of that area
(Vietnam) living under the shadow of powerful empire of
china.
• The Vietnam is also connected to China by silk route, in
order to transfer or exchange of goods,people and ideas.
Entry Of French In Vietnam
• French troops landed in Vietnam in 1858.
• The colonisation of Vietnam by French brought the
people of the country into conflict against their rules
and ideas.
• After Franco-chinese war,the french assumed
control over Tonkin and Annam in 1887.
• And then French Indo-china is formed.
French Colonisation
• French thought that colonisation is necessary as:
 To supply natural resources
 To bring the benifits of civilisation to backward people.
 To increase cultivation for trade.
 To insure high level of profit.
Development Of Mekong Delta region
• The french built canals to drain lands in the Mekong delta to
increase cultivation.
• The vast system of irrigation works-canals and earthworks.
• It allowed export of rice to the international market.
• Trans Indo-china rail network was constructed which links
the northern and southern parts of Vietnam and China.
• Infrastructure development.
Should colonies be Developed?
• Someone like Paul Bernard an influential writer and
policy maker,strongly believed that the economy of the
colonies needed to be developed.
• If the economy was developed and the standard of living
of the people improved,they would buy more goods.The
market would consequently expand,leading to better
profits for french business.
Barriers to Economic Growth in Vietnam
a) High population Levels.
b) Low agricultural productivity.
c) Extensive indebtness amongst the peasants.
d) There were necessity of land reforms.
e) Could not ensure sufficient employment.
Dilemma Of Colonial Education
• French not only colonised the economy of Vietnam but
also the the education system.
• The french colonialists believed in carrying out a
“civilising mission” , under the guise of modernising the
colony and they used education as tool to do so.This led
to an erosion of cultural beliefs, religion and tradition of
Vietnam.
Dilemma Of Colonial Education(2)
• Education was seen as one way to civilise the native.But
in order to educate them,the French had to resolve a
dilemma.
• The french needed an educated local labour force but
they feared that education might lose their jobs-as
teachers,shopkeepers etc. to educated Vietnamese.
• So they opposed the policies that would give the
Vietnamese full access to french education.
Talking Modern
• If the education to be replaced ,so what will be the
language Vietamese or French??
• Some of them suggests French and others suggests
Vietnamese as the medium of language.
• Only the Vietamese elites comprising a small fraction of
the population could enroll in the schools and only few
among those admited and ultimated passed the school-
leaving examination.
Talking Modern(2)
• Usually,as many as two-thirds of the students failed in the
final year examination.
• In 1925,in a population of 17million,there were less than
400 who passsed the examination.
• The Vietnamese were represented as backward,primitive
and inferior than French.
Looking Modern
• The Tonkin Free School was started in 1907 to provide a
western style education.
• This education includes classes of Science,Hygiene and
French.
• The School encouraged the adoption of western styles
such having a short haircut to the students.
Resistance in Schools
Saigon Girls School incident in 1926
The major protest erupted in Saigon Native Girls Schol in
1926,in Vietnam,when a Vietnamese girl sitting in the front
seat was asked to move to the back for a local french
student to occupy the front bench to which she refused and
was expelled by the principal.
When in angry students protested,they were too
expelled,leading to further spread of open protests.
Resistance in Schools(2)
• This incident leads them into conflicts with the French as
well as traditional elites.
• By the 1920s,students wee forming various political
parties,such as the party of Young Annan,and publishing
nationalists journals such as the Annanese Student.
• Schools thus became an important place for political and
cultural battles.
Plague Strikes Hanoi
• The French part of Hanoi was built as a beautiful and clean city with
wide avenues and a well-laid-out sewer system.The waste from the
old city drained out into the river or,during heavy rains or floods,
overflowed into the streets.
• Thus what was installed to create a hygienic environment in the
French city became the cause of the plague.
Plague Strikes Hanoi(2)
• The large sewers in the modern part of the city, were an
ideal and protected breeding ground for rats. The sewers
also served as a great transport system, allowing the rats
to move around the city without any problem. Rats began
to enter the homes of the French through the sewage
pipes.
Rat Hunt in 1902
• The French hired Vietnamese workers and paid them for
each rat they caught. Rats began to be caught in
thousands. Those who did the dirty work of entering
sewers found that if they came together they could earn a
big amount. They also discovered innovative ways to
profit from this situation. The bounty was paid when a tail
was given as proof that a rat had been killed. So the rat-
catchers cut the tails and released the rats, so that the
process could be repeated, over and over again. Some
people, in fact, began raising rats to earn a bounty.
Religion and Anti-Colonialism
• Vietnam’s religious beliefs were a mixture of Buddhism,
Confucianism and local practices. Christianity was introduced by
French missionaries. From the eighteenth century, many religious
movements were hostile to the Western presence in Vietnam.
• An early movement against French control and the spread of
Christianity was theScholars Revolt in 1868. This revolt was led
by the officials at the imperial court, whowere angry at the spread
of Catholicism and French power. They led a general uprisingin
Ngu An and Ha Tien provinces where over a thousand Catholics
were killed.
Religion and Anti-Colonialism(2)
• Catholic missionaries had been active in winning converts
since the early seventeenth century, and by the middle of
the eighteenth century had converted some 300,000.
TheFrench crushed the movement but this uprising
served to inspire other patriots to rise up against them.
• There were many popular religions in Vietnam that were
spread by people who claimedto have seen a vision of
God. Some of these religious movements supported the
French,but others inspired movements against the
colonial rule.
Religion and Anti-Colonialism(3)
• The Hoa Hao Movement began in 1939 and gained great
popularity in the fertile Mekong delta area. It drew on
religious ideas popular in anti-French uprisings of the
nineteenth century.
• The French tried to suppress the movement inspired by
Huynh Phu So. They declaredhim mad, called him the
Mad Bonze, and put him in a mental asylum. The French
authorities exiled him to Laos and sent many of his
followers to concentration camps
The Vision of Modernisation
• Some intellectuals felt that Vietnamese traditions had to be
strengthened to resist the domination of the West, while others felt
that Vietnam had to learn from the West even while opposing
foreign domination. These differing visions led to complex
debates,which could not be easily resolved.
• Phan Boi Chau, a nationalist, became a major figure in the anti-
colonial resistance fromthe time he formed the Revolutionary
Society (Duy Tan Hoi) in 1903, with Prince Cuong De as the head.
He believed that Vietnamese traditions had to be strengthened to
resist the domination of the West and develop a common culture
with that of China.
The Vision of Modernisation(2)
• Phan Chau Trinh , another nationalist, was intensely hostile to the
monarchy andopposed to the idea of resisting the French with the
help of the court. His desire was to establish a democratic
republic. Deeply influenced by the democratic ideals of the
West,he did not want a wholesale rejection of Western civilization.
He accepted the French revolutionary ideal of liberty but charged
the French for not abiding by the ideal. He demanded that the
French should set up legal and educational institutions, and
develop agriculture and industries, in Vietnam as well.
The Communist Movement &
Vietnamese Nationalism
• Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces were among the poorest,
had an old radical tradition,and have been called the
‘electrical fuses’ of Vietnam – because when the
(economic)system was under pressure they were the first
to blow. They were the first to affect by the Great
Depression of the 1930s.
The Communist Movement &
Vietnamese Nationalism(2)
• The new republic faced a number of challenges. The French tried
to regain control byusing the emperor, Bao Dai, as their puppet.
Faced with the French offensive, the Vietminh was forced to
retreat to the hills.
• After eight years of fighting, the French were defeated in 1954 at
Dien Bien Phu. In thepeace negotiations in Geneva that followed
the French defeat, the Vietnamese werepersuaded to accept the
division of the country. North and south Vietnam were formed.Ho
Chi Minh and the communists took power in the north while Bao
Dai’s capitalist regime was put in power in the south.
Consequences of the Partition of Vietnam
• The division turned Vietnam into a battlefield bringing
death and destruction to its people as well as the
environment.
• The Bao Dai regime was overthrown by a coup led by
Ngo Dinh Diem. Diem built a repressive and authoritarian
government.
• Anyone who opposed him was called a communist and
was jailed and killed.
Consequences of the Partition of Vietnam
• Diem retained Ordinance 10, a French law that permitted
Christianity but outlawed Buddhism.
• His dictatorial rule came to be opposed by a broad
opposition united under the banner of the National
Liberation Front (NLF).
Entry of the US into the War
• US entry into the war marked a new phase that proved
costly to the Vietnamese as well as to the Americans.
• From 1965 to 1972, over 3,403,100 US services
personnel served in Vietnam (7,484 were women).
• Even though the US had advanced technology and good
medical supplies, casualties were high. About 47,244 died
in battle and 303,704 were wounded.
Entry of the US into the War(2)
• Thousands of US troops arrived equipped with heavy
weapons and tanks and backed by the most powerful
bombers of the time – B52s. The wide spread attacks and
use of chemical weapons – Napalm, Agent Orange, and
phosphorous bombs – destroyed many villages and
decimated jungles. Civilians died in large numbers.
Ho Chi Minh Trail
• It symbolizes how the Vietnamese used their limited resources to
great advantage. The trail, an immense network of footpaths and
roads, was used to transport men and materials from the north to the
south.
• The trail was improved from the late 1950s, and from 1967 about
20,000 North Vietnamese troops came south each month on this
trail.
• The trail had support bases and hospitals along the way. In some
parts, supplies weretransported in trucks, but mostly they were
carried by porters, who were mainly women.These porters carried
about 25 kilos on their backs, or about 70 kilos on their bicycles.
Role of women in the Anti-imperialist
struggle in Vietnam
• As the nationalist movement grew, the status of women came to
be questioned and a new image of womanhood emerged. Writers
and political thinkers began idealizing women who rebelled
against social norms.
• In the 1930s, a famous novel by Nhat Linh caused a scandal
because it showed a woman leaving a forced marriage and
marrying someone of her choice, someone who wasinvolved in
nationalist politics. This rebellion against social conventions
marked thearrival of the new woman in Vietnamese society.
Women as Rebel
• Rebel women of the past were similarly celebrated. In 1913, the
nationalist Phan Boi Chau wrote a play based on the lives of the
Trung sisters who had fought against Chinese domination in 39-
43 CE. (Common Era) In this play, he depicted these sisters as
patriots fighting to save the Vietnamese nation from the Chinese.
• Nationalists popularized image of another rebel leader Trieu Au,
who lived in third century CE. to inspire people to action.
Women as Rebel(2)
• In the 1960s, photographs in magazines and journals
showed women as brave fighters.There were pictures of
women militia shooting down planes. They were
portrayed asyoung, brave and dedicated.
• Stories were written to show how happy they felt when
they joined the army and couldcarry a rifle. Some stories
spoke of their incredible bravery in single-handedly killing
the enemy – Nguyen Thi Xuan, for instance, was reputed
to have shot down a jet with just twenty bullets.

  • 2. THE NATIONALIST MOVEMENT IN INDO-CHINA Presented and Designed By Kishan Mishra
  • 3. • Indo china comprises Vietnam,Laos and Cambodia. • This lesson introduce u about one of the important states of the peninsula, Vietnam. • Vietnam got its independence in 1945.
  • 4. Relation To China • Earlier Vietnamese people generally of that area (Vietnam) living under the shadow of powerful empire of china. • The Vietnam is also connected to China by silk route, in order to transfer or exchange of goods,people and ideas.
  • 5. Entry Of French In Vietnam • French troops landed in Vietnam in 1858. • The colonisation of Vietnam by French brought the people of the country into conflict against their rules and ideas. • After Franco-chinese war,the french assumed control over Tonkin and Annam in 1887. • And then French Indo-china is formed.
  • 6. French Colonisation • French thought that colonisation is necessary as:  To supply natural resources  To bring the benifits of civilisation to backward people.  To increase cultivation for trade.  To insure high level of profit.
  • 7. Development Of Mekong Delta region • The french built canals to drain lands in the Mekong delta to increase cultivation. • The vast system of irrigation works-canals and earthworks. • It allowed export of rice to the international market. • Trans Indo-china rail network was constructed which links the northern and southern parts of Vietnam and China. • Infrastructure development.
  • 8. Should colonies be Developed? • Someone like Paul Bernard an influential writer and policy maker,strongly believed that the economy of the colonies needed to be developed. • If the economy was developed and the standard of living of the people improved,they would buy more goods.The market would consequently expand,leading to better profits for french business.
  • 9. Barriers to Economic Growth in Vietnam a) High population Levels. b) Low agricultural productivity. c) Extensive indebtness amongst the peasants. d) There were necessity of land reforms. e) Could not ensure sufficient employment.
  • 10. Dilemma Of Colonial Education • French not only colonised the economy of Vietnam but also the the education system. • The french colonialists believed in carrying out a “civilising mission” , under the guise of modernising the colony and they used education as tool to do so.This led to an erosion of cultural beliefs, religion and tradition of Vietnam.
  • 11. Dilemma Of Colonial Education(2) • Education was seen as one way to civilise the native.But in order to educate them,the French had to resolve a dilemma. • The french needed an educated local labour force but they feared that education might lose their jobs-as teachers,shopkeepers etc. to educated Vietnamese. • So they opposed the policies that would give the Vietnamese full access to french education.
  • 12. Talking Modern • If the education to be replaced ,so what will be the language Vietamese or French?? • Some of them suggests French and others suggests Vietnamese as the medium of language. • Only the Vietamese elites comprising a small fraction of the population could enroll in the schools and only few among those admited and ultimated passed the school- leaving examination.
  • 13. Talking Modern(2) • Usually,as many as two-thirds of the students failed in the final year examination. • In 1925,in a population of 17million,there were less than 400 who passsed the examination. • The Vietnamese were represented as backward,primitive and inferior than French.
  • 14. Looking Modern • The Tonkin Free School was started in 1907 to provide a western style education. • This education includes classes of Science,Hygiene and French. • The School encouraged the adoption of western styles such having a short haircut to the students.
  • 15. Resistance in Schools Saigon Girls School incident in 1926 The major protest erupted in Saigon Native Girls Schol in 1926,in Vietnam,when a Vietnamese girl sitting in the front seat was asked to move to the back for a local french student to occupy the front bench to which she refused and was expelled by the principal. When in angry students protested,they were too expelled,leading to further spread of open protests.
  • 16. Resistance in Schools(2) • This incident leads them into conflicts with the French as well as traditional elites. • By the 1920s,students wee forming various political parties,such as the party of Young Annan,and publishing nationalists journals such as the Annanese Student. • Schools thus became an important place for political and cultural battles.
  • 17. Plague Strikes Hanoi • The French part of Hanoi was built as a beautiful and clean city with wide avenues and a well-laid-out sewer system.The waste from the old city drained out into the river or,during heavy rains or floods, overflowed into the streets. • Thus what was installed to create a hygienic environment in the French city became the cause of the plague.
  • 18. Plague Strikes Hanoi(2) • The large sewers in the modern part of the city, were an ideal and protected breeding ground for rats. The sewers also served as a great transport system, allowing the rats to move around the city without any problem. Rats began to enter the homes of the French through the sewage pipes.
  • 19. Rat Hunt in 1902 • The French hired Vietnamese workers and paid them for each rat they caught. Rats began to be caught in thousands. Those who did the dirty work of entering sewers found that if they came together they could earn a big amount. They also discovered innovative ways to profit from this situation. The bounty was paid when a tail was given as proof that a rat had been killed. So the rat- catchers cut the tails and released the rats, so that the process could be repeated, over and over again. Some people, in fact, began raising rats to earn a bounty.
  • 20. Religion and Anti-Colonialism • Vietnam’s religious beliefs were a mixture of Buddhism, Confucianism and local practices. Christianity was introduced by French missionaries. From the eighteenth century, many religious movements were hostile to the Western presence in Vietnam. • An early movement against French control and the spread of Christianity was theScholars Revolt in 1868. This revolt was led by the officials at the imperial court, whowere angry at the spread of Catholicism and French power. They led a general uprisingin Ngu An and Ha Tien provinces where over a thousand Catholics were killed.
  • 21. Religion and Anti-Colonialism(2) • Catholic missionaries had been active in winning converts since the early seventeenth century, and by the middle of the eighteenth century had converted some 300,000. TheFrench crushed the movement but this uprising served to inspire other patriots to rise up against them. • There were many popular religions in Vietnam that were spread by people who claimedto have seen a vision of God. Some of these religious movements supported the French,but others inspired movements against the colonial rule.
  • 22. Religion and Anti-Colonialism(3) • The Hoa Hao Movement began in 1939 and gained great popularity in the fertile Mekong delta area. It drew on religious ideas popular in anti-French uprisings of the nineteenth century. • The French tried to suppress the movement inspired by Huynh Phu So. They declaredhim mad, called him the Mad Bonze, and put him in a mental asylum. The French authorities exiled him to Laos and sent many of his followers to concentration camps
  • 23. The Vision of Modernisation • Some intellectuals felt that Vietnamese traditions had to be strengthened to resist the domination of the West, while others felt that Vietnam had to learn from the West even while opposing foreign domination. These differing visions led to complex debates,which could not be easily resolved. • Phan Boi Chau, a nationalist, became a major figure in the anti- colonial resistance fromthe time he formed the Revolutionary Society (Duy Tan Hoi) in 1903, with Prince Cuong De as the head. He believed that Vietnamese traditions had to be strengthened to resist the domination of the West and develop a common culture with that of China.
  • 24. The Vision of Modernisation(2) • Phan Chau Trinh , another nationalist, was intensely hostile to the monarchy andopposed to the idea of resisting the French with the help of the court. His desire was to establish a democratic republic. Deeply influenced by the democratic ideals of the West,he did not want a wholesale rejection of Western civilization. He accepted the French revolutionary ideal of liberty but charged the French for not abiding by the ideal. He demanded that the French should set up legal and educational institutions, and develop agriculture and industries, in Vietnam as well.
  • 25. The Communist Movement & Vietnamese Nationalism • Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces were among the poorest, had an old radical tradition,and have been called the ‘electrical fuses’ of Vietnam – because when the (economic)system was under pressure they were the first to blow. They were the first to affect by the Great Depression of the 1930s.
  • 26. The Communist Movement & Vietnamese Nationalism(2) • The new republic faced a number of challenges. The French tried to regain control byusing the emperor, Bao Dai, as their puppet. Faced with the French offensive, the Vietminh was forced to retreat to the hills. • After eight years of fighting, the French were defeated in 1954 at Dien Bien Phu. In thepeace negotiations in Geneva that followed the French defeat, the Vietnamese werepersuaded to accept the division of the country. North and south Vietnam were formed.Ho Chi Minh and the communists took power in the north while Bao Dai’s capitalist regime was put in power in the south.
  • 27. Consequences of the Partition of Vietnam • The division turned Vietnam into a battlefield bringing death and destruction to its people as well as the environment. • The Bao Dai regime was overthrown by a coup led by Ngo Dinh Diem. Diem built a repressive and authoritarian government. • Anyone who opposed him was called a communist and was jailed and killed.
  • 28. Consequences of the Partition of Vietnam • Diem retained Ordinance 10, a French law that permitted Christianity but outlawed Buddhism. • His dictatorial rule came to be opposed by a broad opposition united under the banner of the National Liberation Front (NLF).
  • 29. Entry of the US into the War • US entry into the war marked a new phase that proved costly to the Vietnamese as well as to the Americans. • From 1965 to 1972, over 3,403,100 US services personnel served in Vietnam (7,484 were women). • Even though the US had advanced technology and good medical supplies, casualties were high. About 47,244 died in battle and 303,704 were wounded.
  • 30. Entry of the US into the War(2) • Thousands of US troops arrived equipped with heavy weapons and tanks and backed by the most powerful bombers of the time – B52s. The wide spread attacks and use of chemical weapons – Napalm, Agent Orange, and phosphorous bombs – destroyed many villages and decimated jungles. Civilians died in large numbers.
  • 31. Ho Chi Minh Trail • It symbolizes how the Vietnamese used their limited resources to great advantage. The trail, an immense network of footpaths and roads, was used to transport men and materials from the north to the south. • The trail was improved from the late 1950s, and from 1967 about 20,000 North Vietnamese troops came south each month on this trail. • The trail had support bases and hospitals along the way. In some parts, supplies weretransported in trucks, but mostly they were carried by porters, who were mainly women.These porters carried about 25 kilos on their backs, or about 70 kilos on their bicycles.
  • 32. Role of women in the Anti-imperialist struggle in Vietnam • As the nationalist movement grew, the status of women came to be questioned and a new image of womanhood emerged. Writers and political thinkers began idealizing women who rebelled against social norms. • In the 1930s, a famous novel by Nhat Linh caused a scandal because it showed a woman leaving a forced marriage and marrying someone of her choice, someone who wasinvolved in nationalist politics. This rebellion against social conventions marked thearrival of the new woman in Vietnamese society.
  • 33. Women as Rebel • Rebel women of the past were similarly celebrated. In 1913, the nationalist Phan Boi Chau wrote a play based on the lives of the Trung sisters who had fought against Chinese domination in 39- 43 CE. (Common Era) In this play, he depicted these sisters as patriots fighting to save the Vietnamese nation from the Chinese. • Nationalists popularized image of another rebel leader Trieu Au, who lived in third century CE. to inspire people to action.
  • 34. Women as Rebel(2) • In the 1960s, photographs in magazines and journals showed women as brave fighters.There were pictures of women militia shooting down planes. They were portrayed asyoung, brave and dedicated. • Stories were written to show how happy they felt when they joined the army and couldcarry a rifle. Some stories spoke of their incredible bravery in single-handedly killing the enemy – Nguyen Thi Xuan, for instance, was reputed to have shot down a jet with just twenty bullets.
