THE
MUSCULOSKELETAL
SYSTEM
IMAGINE WHAT YOU
WOULD LOOK LIKE IF
ALL YOUR BONES
WERE TAKEN OUT
FROM YOUR BODY?
WHY DO YOU THINK
YOUR SKELETON IS
IMPORTANT?
THE BONES IN OUR
BODY
•Humans have got an internal skeleton. It
is
•made of 206 different bones.
•Infant - 300 or more bones
•Bones are rigid and hard.
THE MUSCULOSKELETAL
SYSTEM
•It is composed of many muscles and
bones.
•It lets you move your body parts and go
from one place to another
THE FUNCTIONS
SKELETON
• It supports the body and
helps to keep its shape.
• It protects the body’s soft
organs, like the brain, the
lungs and the heart.
• Bones can move because they
are connected to muscles.
• So movement is another
function of the skeleton.
BONES
• Bones can be different shapes and sizes.
• There are long bones, short bones, flat bones
• and cylindrical bones.
SKULL
Flat, thick and
very strong bones.
EAR
BONES
The smallest bones
in the body.
CLAVICLE
collarbone
SCAPULA
Shoulder blade
STERNUM
Breast bone
STERNUM
Breast bone
VERTEBRAE
Back bone
PELVIS
Hip bone
The biggest bone in
the body
FEMUR
Thigh
The longest bone in
the body.
TIBIA AND
FIBULA
legs
CRANIUM
part of the skull that
encloses and protects
the brain.
FACIAL
BONES
protect the structures
connected to the eyes,
nose, mouth and ears
RIB CAGE
wall of the chest that
encloses the heart and
lungs
VERTEBRAL
COLUMN
protects the spinal
cord which is located.
WE CAN PUT THE HUMAN
BONES INTO THREE GROUPS
1. Bones in the head.
2. Bones in the extremities (arms and legs.)
3. Bones of the torso.
