ABSTRACT
The main purpose of this study is to determine the
effects of Modernization of Media to the Academic
Performance of Grade 12 student in Asia Source College of
Arts and Technology (ASCAT). Since we are aware that media
upgrade is mandatory, we make this study to figure out what
will be the effects of it in student’s academic performance.
The subjects for this study are the grade 12 student in
Asia Source College of Arts and Technology, and the total
number of respondents who responded to our request are 66,
with the total target respondent of 100. On research
methodology, quantitative-descriptive method was used. The
data were gathered through survey questionnaires and were
treated using frequency distribution, percentage, mean and
Chi-square. The statistical technique that we have used is
analyze and interpret the data by calculating the mean,
media and mode, find the degree of freedom, provide the
expected value by formulating a cell in Microsoft Excel and
finally figure out the result whether the Hypothesis is
rejected or not rejected but most of the question prior to
the problem result for rejection of the null meaning there

CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
INTRODUCTION
Modernization influences and affects all social and
political changes that occur during industrialization,
urbanization, occupational structures, social mobility,
education development of production forces, growth of work,
productivity, central power and supporting national
identities, the extension of political rights and social
participation (Habermas, 2000).
In societies with consolidated modernity mass media
are essential as a mean of preserving social cohesion. In
fact, they have had a decisive contribution to transmitting
the same values and behaviors in a national state and have
been a powerful force behind national cohesion. The
Independence of mass media is fundamental direction of
Europeanization. Europeanization as modernization is
produced in the process of autonomous learning through
variety of means, mass media being some of the most
prominent. They can influence top-down mentality changes
Page | 2
and present those European initiatives, actions and
behaviors built from bottom up: ‘Rather we can see that
perceptions and persuasions were incrementally changed by
way of learning, due to a policy discourse, in which the
European Commission played a major role’ (Toller, 2004).
The new media, in contrast, encourages personal interaction
and the free flow of opinions. Personal opinions and
critical exchanges are not normal elements of Philippine
political recruitment with its emphasis on subservience and
hierarchy. For the new media to significantly affects
politics, education, industrialization and social mobility,
and its structure had to change from a top-down to a bottom
up system. Local media can be expected to raise certain
issues pertinent to minorities and its coverage is limited
and seldom seen as nationally relevant (Longboan, 2009).
According to Legasto (1994) The modernization of media
neglects cultural and other minorities. The importance of
access to any information was graphically illustrated in
1983 when Late President Ninoy Aquino was assassinated on
his return from exile in the USA.
Page | 3
The ordinary Filipinos may have had opinions in the
past, but they generally communicated these through a
limited network of kin, associates, and friends. Presently,
people text, use e-groups, YouTube, blogs, and any other
social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
and such. Accessing wider sources of information may be
necessary and sufficient to bring knowledge to students.
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Media is the communication outlets or tools used to
store and deliver information or data. There are plenty of
forms of mass media such as print or published media, news,
photography, cinema, broadcast media, advertising, and
social media.
Around 40,000 years ago where some of our human
ancestors painted on cave’s wall and some suggest that it
is the first example of communicating through a medium. The
recreation of new technologies gives a wider broadcast of
information from a given point which we all know as the
“Mass Media”, the first technology of this age is paper
which is invented in China in about 100 BCE. As technology
upgrades in the 20th Century where a communication between
Page | 4
two different computers were made through the thing called
internet. In the current Century (21st) wherein technology
influences almost every person you can see in the world.
Nowadays, modernized media such as Social Media,
Broadcast Media, and any other forms of media makes our
lives easier, and the very common technology now is
smartphones, aside from being a portable and handy wherein
you can use it every single day, smartphones is a big help
too to students, it's like a library in a pocket, a compact
multifunctional device that can give you references and/or
information needed in your projects every time you want or
needed.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This chapter describe the theoretical orientation to
help us better understand the modernization of media and
its effect on student’s academic performance. In this
article we reviewed both theoretical and empirical
advancement when it comes to modernization of media. Social
media become an area of interest to researchers, marketers,
students, celebrities, and many other economic and socio-
political institutions. This has to do with the belief that
Page | 5
the power of globalization that forced many people to be
active in media to cope and survive with the demand of the
21st Century technology.
Nowadays, millions of people do their activities on
social media because they have the opportunity to view,
read, seek and share whatever they like, anywhere, anytime
and on any topic (Vicen and Cavus, 2010, Papoola, 2014).
The main objective of these research is to prove why
modernization of media take effect to student’s academic
performance. The figure 1 shows the connection between two
different theories made by Brix A. Badar, this two theories
aim to replace or to prove why media takes place when it
Page | 6
comes to student’s academic performance. The first theory
is Uses and Gratification Theory that identify and analyze
new forms of media and its importance in different
basis(Wikipedia,2004). Another theory that will guide this
study is the Walberg’s Theory of Productivity that explains
the changes in a student’s academic performance with the
relation to student’s ability, motivation, development and
environment on school based learning through the help of
media(IPL.org).
Modernization of media can have a great effect on
student’s academic performance. Access to media makes it
easier for students to learn, and to become motivated to
learn. For example, software programs are available that
teach students how to become proficient touch-typists, an
essential skill for the digital age. Media is easily and
stress free accessible through the Internet in every
language imaginable, much of it freely available. Modern
media can also help youth to express a productivity by
making an art, contents and videos through inexpensive
software programs that might help other to gain knowledge
or to share your knowledge to them of that certain topic
through the internet. Today's youth can use these readily
Page | 7
available tools to create original works of art and then
use the Internet to publish their work on their personal
web page or on a community sharing site such as YouTube,
Quora or Flickr and/or with the larger public domain. An
easy access portal for every learner that are seeking for
information needed to every aspect of education (Mageto J,
2017).
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
Figure 2 shows the paradigm of the study using the IPO
model. This model is known for being an information known
as the input-process-output pattern which is a widely used
approach in engineering business system and analysis for
describing the structure of information processing program
In the final
output we will
find the

or other process (Wikipedia, 2005). In this study the input
will be the demographic profile of the respondent and other
necessary; the process will be giving a concise
descriptions about the topic (Media Modernization)and what
will be the process; lastly, the expected output of this
study are the effect of Modernization of Media to the grade
12 student’s academic performance in Asia Source College of
Arts and Technology.

and information relating to the modernized media,
also they are the target respondents.
Page | 11
Teachers
It will surely give them information on how they
will remind their students and child about what
will be the impact of modernized media,
undergoing such knowledge on using it and how
they will develop skills to use it in a great way.
School
Asia Source College of Arts and Technology will
have a great impact and effect in this research
especially in Marketing because as we all know,
Students nowadays chooses school with Electronic-
based Learning System that uses most of media
than the one that sticks into the Traditional
Learning. It will also be benefited by
advertising itself through the usage of media
either print or advertisement.
Future Researchers
This study will give them some ideas and
knowledge. They can also use this as a guide
while conducting their research.

Chapter II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
This chapter shows the Review of Related Literature
and Studies on the Modernization of Media and its effect to
Academic Performance, its wealth in Literature and Studies,
gathered from published literary works and recent studies.
In understanding the impact and effect of
modernization of media platforms to student’s academic
performance has been active area of research in the
intersection of the field of Senior High School in Asia
Source College of Arts and Technology. This research was
primarily focused on knowing the impact and how it’ll
effect student’s academic performance as stated above.
Statistical data of Statista Philippines shows an increased
use of different types of media either mass or social media
and some of this media types are educational related such
as LinkedIn with more than 8 million users as of 3rd Quarter
of 2019 and rapidly grow, as of September 2020 the total
user of LinkedIn is 9,377,000 which is accounted as 8.4% of
the entire population in the Philippines. The recognition
Page | 16
of this increase, as well as questions concerning its
impact on student learning and performance with the help of
modernized media produced the impetus for this study.
The following review of the literature represents the
literature related to this research study. Through
examination of previous research, the direction of the
present study was formulated. Specifically, the chapter is
organized into four sections: (a) the local literature
related to the study; (b) the foreign literature related to
the study; (c) the local study related to the study itself;
and (d) the local foreign related to the study itself.
Local Literature
There is no doubt that the internet and social media
makes the world so small. They will have a research tool.
Before internet, there are only libraries, research papers
and interviews that are used for references. Now, with just
one click, they will have what they need for their projects
etc. But this can also make teenagers affect their self-
confidence (Bon J., 2020).
Page | 17
In posts that they usually do, they receive "likes" or
"hearts. this is where they get self-validation. But if
they get their self-validation only in these situations,
their self-confidence has a chance to be low. If it depends
on their confidence in social media, it will be weak.
In these times, Internet becomes a part of our daily
lives, especially with teenagers and students. These helps
students in giving information and helps to understand
things they don't usually understand. It also helps with
schoolwork and it gives out precious knowledge with
different things. Like the Internet, there are benefits
that social media gives, particularly for students. in its
own way, it gives students additional information. With the
"share option" it gives students the opportunity to share
articles, videos and information to others that can help
them with their studies. Also, social media is a network in
which it provides communication. these gives students a way
to connect, talk and exchange information with others.
there are so many benefits social media and Internet gives.
But in the other hand, social media has its bad influence.
First, this can make students tardy, because they can
Page | 18
easily search for the answers to their modules. It also
gives wrong information, because not everything on the
Internet is true. It can affect the privacy of the students
and can be victims of cybercrimes and cyber bullying. and
the lastly, this can make the students addicted and consume
their time (Socio-Psychology Open Text, 2014). . . . . . .
Over 10,000 teenagers aging from 13 to 16 years old
participates in a research to see the effects of social
media. The participants were interviewed every year from
2013 to 2015. They were ask how often they use social media
platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and
WhatsApp. if they used these platforms 3 times a day, it
wil be counted as "often use" but it was not questioned how
long they spend when in the said platforms. The teenagers
were placed under a psychological test wherein the said
test that it affects both male and female. these are
connected from using social media but, it was seen that it
affects women more than it affects men. Exposed to cyber
bullying are the causes of this psychological distress.
Social media became a part of our culture.
Page | 19
According to Digital Global Review, across the globe,
Filipinos have the most spent time visiting social media
sites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. 4
hours and 17 minutes average were spent by 58% of Filipinos
that actively uses social media. it is way far behind
Japanese because they spent average of 40 minutes a day.
The use of social media affects the studies of
students. these might give information and new ideas for
the students. There are so many students who uses social
media as a source for their studies and projects. One of
the best examples is their thesis.
Social media are not only for research but can also be
used as a platform to share pictures and videos that can
entertain and bring joy.…………………………………………………………………………………………
Foreign Literature
Though social media can increase student learning
through student interactions, challenges arise when social
media are incorporated into an academic course. The
assumption that students are familiar with and agreeable to
Page | 20
using certain types of social media can cause educators to
inadvertently fail to provide the resources or
encouragement necessary to support student usage and
learning (Tarantino, Kirsten, and McDoNough, 2013).
This review discusses the connections between student
engagement and student learning, followed by the prevalence
of social media use and how it can impact peer interactions,
collaboration, and knowledge creation that can be related
to our study.
Even when social media is used for an educational
purpose, students incorporate the technology into their
lives in a way that may differ from the intentions of the
course instructor. For example, off-topic or non-academic
discussions occur on social media because of its primary
design as a social networking tool. Furthermore, as a
student’s age increases, the frequency of off-topic
discussions also increases. This indicates that while
social media may encourage broader discussions of course
content, older students may spend more time than younger
students engaging in unrelated discussions. Social media
Page | 21
can also negatively affect student GPA as well as the
amount of time students spend preparing for class. One
explanation for this impact is that social media provides
too much stimulation and therefore can distract students
from completing their coursework. Another reason for this
may be that students who spend more time on social media
may have difficulty balancing their online activities and
their academic preparation (Arnold and Paulus,2010).
This study can easily be connected to our study itself
because it draws on the perspectives of the students, the
instructor, and an outside observer to explore the intended
and unintended outcomes of Ning use. As intended by the
instructor, the site effectively served as an information
repository and the blogs and discussion forums promoted
reflection and review of each other's work. Unintended
outcomes included community building and modeling, both of
which are types of vicarious interaction that fall into the
category of pedagogical lurking.
Social network websites grab attention of the students
and then diverts it towards non-educational and
Page | 22
inappropriate actions including useless chatting. Based on
the above statement we can say that social networking sites
may badly affect the academic life and learning experiences
of the student. Moreover, the internet is no doubt
evolution of technology, but specifically social networks
are extremely unsafe for teenagers, social networks become
hugely common and well-known in past few years(Kuppuswamy
and Shankar, 2010).
The relation of our study to this paper is social
networking websites distract students from their studies,
but these websites can be useful for education based on
sound pedagogical principles and proper supervision by the
teachers. Moreover, this literary piece concludes that
social networking websites have both positive as well as
negative impact on the education of youth, depending on
one’s interest to use it in a positive manner for his or
her education and vice versa.
Social media has got much importance because of mostly
use by the people for lots of purposes including education.
In world changing into digital global village, social
Page | 23
networking technology has played a vital role compare to
other internet tools (Ullah, 2019).
The findings revealed in this article proposed that
the social media got much more importance in Social
Commerce and is significantly influenced that urge to buy
technology. Furthermore, impulse buying tendency moderates
all relationships except negative sentiments. Social
interaction in the context of impulse buying though users
encounter them concurrently and frequently while browsing.
Hence, the relation of this study gives a much more modern
influence for lots of factor like education which can be
used to uphold our research that can be used to classify
the effects of modern media to our academic performance.
Furthermore, Giving reference of four different
research papers that for measuring student academic
performance around the world most of the researchers used
GPA and the role of effects of Facebook on students in
students’ academic in Sri Lankan university, that
university grant commission of Sri Lanka decided to measure
academic performance by GPA. Facebook is only an electronic
Page | 24
communication between human but unfortunately it has become
an addiction for all. The impact of Facebook can either be
good or bad on university students and in their academic
activities. Even though a closer look on the real impact of
Facebook reveals that it leads to several problems in
student’s academic performances, with the help of a survey
conducted to collect the data among more than 250 students
of different Universities in Sri Lanka (Thuseethan &
Kuhanesan, 2014).
Today Facebook serve as the main platform used by the
student all around the globe it can easily be related to
the study because Facebook is one of the forms of media,
social media to be specific but somehow it can destroy
someone’s future and academic performance of students. At
the same time this study also intended to find the
significance of use of medias that take effect of students
in their academic performance or succession.
Page | 25
Local Studies
Social Media is considered a deteriorating agent in
academics by some people. The study aims to know the
positive or negative effects of social media usage towards
student’s academic performance in Iligan City National High
School. In this study, the researchers had the sample size
of 257 out of 739 Grade 12 Senior High school students from
Iligan City National High School as the respondents.
Amongst the 257 respondents the researchers randomly picked
10 respondents who were chosen to be interviewed. The
researchers concluded that there is no direct relationship
between using social media and school performance of the
students, since even though the students just use social
media for entertainment they still have high and good
grades instead of looking for some information related to
their lessons. The researchers suggest that students must
have control over their usage of social media to avoid
negative effects of social media towards academic
performance (Branzuela, Bete, Dela Pena, Sagarino and
Maneja, 2016).
Page | 26
The relation between this study to our research is the
possible good and bad effect on a student's academic
performance but this study says that it does not cause any
harm because many students use social media in their
searching for information regarding the lesson they are
discussing. They suggested to reduce its excessive use
which is social media.
To determine the effects of SNSs on academic
performance, the researcher used the descriptive
correlational method of research. An online survey
questionnaire designed using Google docs was distributed to
203 randomly-selected student respondents from the six
colleges in Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna. The study
found out that all students in Lyceum of the Philippines –
Laguna have Facebook accounts and were significantly
registered to more than one SNSs account. The results of
the study showed a statistically significant positive
relationship between time spent by students on SNSs and
their academic performance. The student-respondents tended
to use SNSs to interact with their friends and not use for
academic reasons. Specifically, the study found out that
Page | 27
the higher the time spent on SNSs showed the lower is the
time spent on studying. Hence, correlation analysis showed
an inverse relationship between the GPA and the number of
SNSs accounts being maintained by the students, the
frequency of SNSs use, since when they have SNSs, length of
SNSs use, and the number of study hours. The results
revealed that as these mentioned variables increases, the
GPA also increases, showing that SNSs made contribution in
the attainment of higher grades. However, such
relationships are not significant. Therefore, the study
found that SNSs usage had no significant relationship on
student academic performance.
The relation between this study to our research is
that social networking sites do not affect a student's
grade because The improvement in the grade relies on other
factors within the teaching-learning process and thus could
not be attributed to the use of SNs alone (Morallo, 2013).
Social networking media has been the major source of
communication between individuals in the world over, hence,
the label cyber-world. This includes Facebook, Twitter,
Page | 28
MySpace, Instagram, Flicker, Frienster, Blogs,
Podcast,Youtube, Tumblr and Skype, among others. Users of
these forms of media made use of such technology gadgets as
cell phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and e-
readers. Researchers all over the world have varied
findings on the effects of these forms of media on the
academic performance of students. Those students who used
the media wisely, their academic performance improved.
However, those who failed to regulate their use of these
social networking tools negatively affected their studies
which oftentimes led to their addicted use. In general, the
study found out that the exposure of the IMEAS students to
the social networking media positively affected their
academic performance. Hence, the University must implement
policies and projects designed for more easy access of the
students to the Facebook network site in the school campus.
In contrast, there is also this very disturbing finding of
the study which disclosed that the students of IMEAS,
University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato used the
social networking media almost daily since majority of them
answered to have used said form of media 5-6 days a week at
Page | 29
an average of about 1-2 hours every session (Kulidtod and
Pasagui,2017).
The relation between this study to our research is the
use of media wisely can improve the academic performance of
the student but, frequent use can cause addiction which
will affect the academic performance of a student. It is
recommended that the USM must regulate the proper time
usage by the students of social networking media in the
campus in order not to destruct with their classroom
activities.
Social Media is considered as phenomenal in today’s
generation. It conquered the world by storm and became more
popular to the youth of most nations including the
Philippines. This research aims to study the relationship
of Social Media in relation to the Academic Performance of
the students of Bachelor of Science in Information
Technology at Centro Escolar University-Malolos. Among the
one thirty-eight (138) respondents drawn using stratified
random sampling there are 45 first years, 37 second and
third years and 19 fourth years. There are 102 males and 36
females participated in this study. Seventy-one (71) or

51.4% of the respondents have reached below satisfactory
grade average while sixty-seven (67) or 48.6% students have
successfully reached the satisfactory academic performance
from an average grade. Sixty-one (61) or 44.3% falls under
the Occasional User of Social Media while seventy-seven (77)
or 55.7% falls under Frequent User of Social Media. This
represents that there are more Frequent User of Social
Media among the respondents participated in this study.
Students’ Prelim and Midterm Average and their Social Media
usage were correlated using Pearson ( r ) correlation and
evaluated that there is moderate significant relationship
between Social Media and the Academic Performance of the
BSIT students of Centro Escolar University -Malolos,
Bulacan (Tamayo and Dela cruz, 2014).
The relation between this study to our research is the
use of social media by students can really help in learning
especially in students who have taken degree in information
technology.
Page | 31
According to Ma. Mercedes Rodrigo, Ph.D.a, Michael
Grosch, Ph.D.b and Juan miguel Andres(2013) in their study
"Media Usage by Filipino Students" states that Between the
different traditional learning tools and the rapid rise of
technology and ease of access to them, students are
presented with a multitude of avenues for learning. With so
many resources available, students had to learn to be
selective. By finding out what tools and services students
use the most, this research aims to determine how students
avoid information overload and getting lost in cyberspace.
To do this, a survey was carried out at the Ateneo de
Manila University in Manila, Philippines. Using a print
questionnaire, 942 students were asked 145 questions about
their media usage for learning and related topics. Analysis
of the data included analysis of variance and comparing
mean values by creating rankings of the different media
services. It was aimed to find out what services are used
the most, and to what extent. The results showed that
students are more inclined to use online resources such as
Google, online course material and literature, though there
is still great appreciation for traditional learning media
such as books and printed handouts from teachers. Filipino
Page | 32
students seem to prefer self-learning, whether through
traditional or non-traditional means, rather than learning
through social media (Rodrigo, Grosch, and Andres,2013).
The relation between this study to our research is the
use of a student's traditional or non-traditional in his
studies where he will be comfortable learning a lesson he
will study but many of the Filipino students are self-
learning rather than traditional and non-traditional means
or even social media.
Foreign Studies
The influence of social media participation on
academic performance. The sample consisted of 1960 students
taking one of two courses at undergraduate or postgraduate
level, respectively (Faculty of Education, National
Distance Education University, Spain), of whom 411 students
carried out an activity based on social media participation.
We used a mixed quantitative (descriptive analysis and
ANOVA) and qualitative (content analysis) design. Our
results showed that the students who participated in a
social media-based activity presented better academic
performance than those who did not carry out any activity
Page | 33
or who took part in a more traditional learning activity.
We conclude that regardless of educational level, social
media participation exerts a positive influence on
performance. Consequently, it is important to consider the
variable of social networking site use because this can
partially explain academic performance. We also found that
the networks generated during the course did not constitute
stable communities of practice. Our main recommendation is
that three stages of instruction should be considered when
designing a course based on social media participation:
beginners, intermediate, and professional (Santoveña-Casal,
2019).
The relation between of this study and our study is
the impact of social media on academic performance, this
study shows that social media shows a positive impact on
academic performance, as the students who participated in
it showed better performance in academic work or academic
performance and the use of social media shows a positive
influence on learning.
Page | 34
India is the third biggest country in terms of
internet users in the world, with a high social and mobile
audience. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter,
Orkut, etc., diverting students from their studies.
Students spend more time on social media than they do do
using personnel email. Even Though, there is loss of
privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for
connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared
interest. Today, the main aim of the student should be
education and their future career. However, many students
rely on the accessibility of information on social media.
That means reduced focus on learning and retaining
information. The study also points out the popularity of
social networking sites among student community. The social
networking sites and social media have revolutionized the
world, bringing us closer than ever before. However,
students can exploit this and use it for a better life, a
better tomorrow. It should be used to connect, stay in
touch, share views but not waste time on. The sample size
for the study is 100. A questionnaire is designed to
determine the various factors of social media that have
impact on student’s education. Variables identified are
Page | 35
gender, education, social influence, and academic
(Selvaraj2 December, 2013)
This study shows negative effect of using social media
to the academic performance, because they prioritize the
use of social media and neglect their studies. Students
devoted more time to social media than their studies and
many of them relying on social media. Which means that
their focus on their studies is reduce, and the use of
social media is given more importance.
This study looks at social media network participation
and academic performance in senior high schools. The study
was aimed at identifying social media network sites and
their usage among students, how students networked and
participated on social media networks, time invested by
students on social networks, the effects of social media on
students’ grammar and spelling as well as the effects of
social network participation on the student’s academic
performance within the context of the social learning and
the use and gratification theories. To achieve the
objectives of the research, the study used a mixed method
Page | 36
approach which involved the survey of students in four
senior high schools and interviews of heads of the senior
high schools. The study revealed that majority of
respondents used Whatsapp and Facebook for making friends
and chatting. In addition, majority of respondents
experienced negative effects 2 such as poor grammar and
spelling, late submission of assignment, less study time
and poor academic performance due to the heavy
participation on social media networks. Furthermore, there
was a high addiction rate among students in the usage of
social media networks. Nevertheless, there were cases where
others experienced improvement in their readings skills as
result of participation on social media networks. Also,
respondents shared ideas, discussed, and shared examination
questions among themselves on social media networks. The
study recommended the strict enforcement of Ghana Education
Service rule on electronic devices usage in schools,
promotion of social media usage for academic purpose,
counselling for addicted students and the use of the right
grammar and spelling when participating on social networks
(Mingle and Adams, 2015).
Page | 37
This study shows that majority of the respondents
experienced negative effects because of using social
network or social media. Some of its effect are late
submission of assignments, less study time and poor
academic performance due to excessive use of social media.
Media is playing a very prominent role in the life of
a modern man. There are a large number of people who use
different type of social media in order to keep them update
and connected with the entire world. Using social media
affects their study and academic performance and ultimately
their result become effective. Some of the students cannot
remain away from using social media and it affects their
academic performance badly. The purpose of this research is
to find out the impact of using social media on academic
performance of students at graduate level . The
population of this study was all male and female graduate
(final year) students of post graduate colleges of district
Vehari. 300 students were selected as a sample of study
randomly. A questionnaire comprised 40 statements based on
5-points Likert scale was developed for data collection.
The respondents are to tick any one out of the five given
Page | 38
options to show their attitude towards every statement
presented to them via questionnaire. Our results show that
the students use social media as a helping tool in their
studies but it badly social affects their studies (Kausar1
and Ghafoor , 2019).
This study shows that using of social media had a
negative effects on academic performance of students, they
use social media as tool to their study, but unfortunately
it affects their studies badly. The result of this study
showed that, though social media have negative effects on
teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting students
from their academic work, taking most of their productive
time, and such like, they also have benefits and can be
used appropriately.
Despite the unhealthy impact of social media many
students are engrossed in spending most of their hours on
social media sites which includes the most popular Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram. Social media has embedded a negative
image upon many minds however it is also perceived as a
pathway to develop vital knowledge and social skills among
Page | 39
students beyond their campus walls (Wang, Chen, and Liang,
2011). Social media has equal positive or negative aspects
but, many students are using these sites on a regular basis.
Over the years many studies have been conducted over the
impact of social media on academic performance of students
and it demonstrates a strong relationship between the two
variables. Therefore, our research aims to study the
relationship between the social media and students’
academic performance in Pakistan (Hasnain, Nasreen, Ijaz,
2015).

Chapter III
Research Design and Methodology
The methodology used in this study, which covers the
research method, research design, population of the sample
study, threats to validation, data gathering and data
processing, and statistical treatment of data used in this
study.
Research Method
To discover the effects of Modernization of Media to
the academic performance and their perceived as well as
experience consequences of it, the researcher used
quantitative method of research, employing the survey
questionnaire, data gathering, and interview method.
Research Design
To figure out the effects of modernization of media to
the academic performance, the researchers decided to take
Quantitative-Descriptive Research Design as the design of
the study.
Page | 41
Population of the Sample Data
The sample data of this study covers the respondent
ages from 15-22 years old from different section in
different strands of Asia Source College of Arts and
Technology a total of 70 students.
Threats to Validation
The possible threats to our study internally will be
the Maturation, wherein the internal states may have
changed and therefore the differences obtained would be
attributable to these changes as opposed to variable also
in external threats we might encounter testing effect (The
administration of a pre- or post-test affects the outcomes)
and experimenter effect (The characteristics or behaviors
of the experimenter(s) unintentionally influence the
outcomes).
Data Procedure
To support the following stated above, A Pre-existing
or Official Data that has already been documented (Grades
of the Student) and non-existing data (Interview and Survey)
Page | 42
will be the basis of our data gathering procedure after
planning of what is the targeted data to seek.
Data Processing
The research will then ask each Advisers of different
sections/strands for permission to have a copy of student’s
grade and ask the student themselves to answer our survey
questionnaires and randomly select someone as a respondent
to the interview to be conducted.
Statistical Tool/ Treatment of Data
The Statistical tool that we’re going to use is the
Chi Square statistic wherein it measures how a model
compares to actual observed data. The data used in
computation of the chi-square must be random. This is often
used as the statistical tool used in hypothesis testing.
1. Chi-square Formula:
A chi-square (χ2) statistic is a test that measures how
a model compares to actual observed data. The data used in
calculating a chi-square statistic must be random,
raw, mutually exclusive, drawn from independent variables,
and drawn from a large enough sample.
Page | 43
where:
c = Degrees of Freedom
O = Observed Value(s)
E = Expected Value(s)
2. Percentage of the Respondents
Divide the number of people who answered in the
affirmative by the total number polled. The total 66
respondents is divided by 100 which is the total number of
target respondents equals 0.6. Multiply the quotient you
calculated in by 100 to get a percentage figure.
Solution:
66/100 = 0.66 or 0.6 only
0.6*100 = 60 or 60%
Therefor the total percentage of the respondents is
60% in total and 40% of the target respondents to fulfill
100% of it is missing or did not respond.

is an effect in using Modernization of Media to the
Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students by means of time,
creating task and finishing before deadline, gathering
information, effect in grades, learning, just for fun,
stress reliever, and any other positive effects.
This means that there is significant relationship of
Modernization of Media to the Academic Performance of Grade
12 Students in Asia Source College of Arts and Technology.
Thus, the null hypothesis is rejected.

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
This chapter presents summary, conclusion, and
recommendation after empirically collected and analyzed
data.
Summary
This study will determine the effects of Modernization
of Media to the Academic Performance of Grade 12 students
in Asia Source College of Arts and Technology.
This study is conducted at Asia Source College of Arts
and Technology. The study is a sequential-experiment and
survey questionnaire. It is composed of 66 students from
Asia Source College of Arts and Technology.

Conclusion
Majority of the students with mean average of 33 who
responds to our survey are from Academic Track.
Majority of the respondents are ages 17-18 years old
with mean average of 16.5.
The large number of respondents are females more than
males with mean average of 33, maybe because the population
of female students in Asia Source is much more than males.
Out of all strands found in Asia Source most of the
respondents come from ABM Strand with mean average of 11 as
the largest contributor in the study.
Most of the respondents agreed that Modernization of
Media consumes their time with mean average of 16.5.
Most of the respondents agreed that Modernization of
Media take effect in making their assignment, project and
Page | 53
any other task given by their teacher with mean average of
16.5.
Most of the respondents neutralized the possibility of
helping themselves in focusing to finish their task before
deadline with mean average of 16.5.
Most of the respondents agree that the Modernization of
Media helps them gather information necessary to their task
with mean average of 22.
Most of the respondents neutralized the possibility of
raising their grades in a particular subject with mean
average of 22.
Most of the respondents uses Brainly with mean average
of 11 as primary educational application needed to finish
their task followed by LinkedIn (SlideShare).
Most of the respondents with mean of 22 uses Internet
Media more than Broadcast and Print Media.
Page | 54
Most of the respondents with mean average of 11 uses
Print Media once a month and daily for both broadcast and
internet media.
Most of the respondents with mean average of 22 states
that they used the following media application Facebook,
Instagram, Twitter, and Tiktok just for fun, followed by
Learning Purposes and lastly, it helps to remove their
stress after school classes.
All of the respondents (66) uses LinkedIn (SlideShare)
as one of their most used learning application, 29
respondents uses Brainly, 21 uses both Quora and Quizlet,
20 uses Pinterest, 16 uses Geckonation, 15 uses both
Physics Class and Gigantic App, followed by Prodigy, and
lastly, the CoolMath with 10 users out of all 66
respondents.
The YouTube takes lots of purposes to each respondent
with mean average of 22, 26 of them says that they used it
for Learning, 23 just for fun, and 17 states that it helps
them to remove stress after school classes.
Page | 55
In General, the list of all given applications and
website necessary for learning are all well used for
Learning Purposes and some of those application serve as a
time consuming application just to have fun and also to
remove the stress of students after school classes.
Most of the respondents states that Modernization of
Media gives a Positive effect to the Academic Performance
with a frequency of 53(80.3%) and the rest of the
respondents with total frequency of 13(19.7%) cause
negative effect to them. Therefor majority of them gained
lots of positive impact in the usage of Modernization of
Media to their Academic Performance.
Most of the respondents feel like they’re missing out
for a bit after leaving the presence of Modernization of
Media, followed by the perception of it doesn’t affect them
at all and the rest feels anxious about it.
Most of the respondents spends time in any
Modernization of Media platforms for about four to eight
hours, followed by 20 respondents who spends two to four
Page | 56
hours and another 20 who spends eight to twelve hours if
combined together a total of 40 respondents, and lastly, 4
of the respondents spends a minute to an hour in using
Modernization of Media.
In General, respondents with mean average of 16.5 take
almost four to eight hours spending time in using
modernization of media but it gives them a positive impact
with mean average of 33 and after leaving the presence of
it they feel a bit of missin’ out for the rest of the day
with mean average of 22.
Recommendation
The researchers recommend to all students that another
research study on the effects of Modernization of Media
should be conducted in Asia Source College of Arts and
Technology in the next 2 years and with different angle of
it, not only in Academic Performances. This research must
include an awareness on how to properly use the
Modernization of Media, to manage the time of each user to
avoid physical condition or effect such as poor eye sight
Page | 57
due to exposure to smart devices and any other related
effects of using Modernization of Media.
The researchers recommend to all parents, teacher and
school, that any associate related to the respondents
(student or child) such as Teacher and Parents should hold
a personal program wherein the exposure of the student to
any possible Media Forms is limited and must be educational
based only or sometimes a brief scroll on their Social
Media account just to be updated on the happenings around
the globe. There isn’t wrong of using Modern Devices or
Smart Devices as long it will not cause a harm or bad
effect to the Physical, Emotional, and Mental state of
one’s life.

  • 9. Page | 1 CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION Modernization influences and affects all social and political changes that occur during industrialization, urbanization, occupational structures, social mobility, education development of production forces, growth of work, productivity, central power and supporting national identities, the extension of political rights and social participation (Habermas, 2000). In societies with consolidated modernity mass media are essential as a mean of preserving social cohesion. In fact, they have had a decisive contribution to transmitting the same values and behaviors in a national state and have been a powerful force behind national cohesion. The Independence of mass media is fundamental direction of Europeanization. Europeanization as modernization is produced in the process of autonomous learning through variety of means, mass media being some of the most prominent. They can influence top-down mentality changes
  • 10. Page | 2 and present those European initiatives, actions and behaviors built from bottom up: ‘Rather we can see that perceptions and persuasions were incrementally changed by way of learning, due to a policy discourse, in which the European Commission played a major role’ (Toller, 2004). The new media, in contrast, encourages personal interaction and the free flow of opinions. Personal opinions and critical exchanges are not normal elements of Philippine political recruitment with its emphasis on subservience and hierarchy. For the new media to significantly affects politics, education, industrialization and social mobility, and its structure had to change from a top-down to a bottom up system. Local media can be expected to raise certain issues pertinent to minorities and its coverage is limited and seldom seen as nationally relevant (Longboan, 2009). According to Legasto (1994) The modernization of media neglects cultural and other minorities. The importance of access to any information was graphically illustrated in 1983 when Late President Ninoy Aquino was assassinated on his return from exile in the USA.
  • 11. Page | 3 The ordinary Filipinos may have had opinions in the past, but they generally communicated these through a limited network of kin, associates, and friends. Presently, people text, use e-groups, YouTube, blogs, and any other social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and such. Accessing wider sources of information may be necessary and sufficient to bring knowledge to students. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Media is the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or data. There are plenty of forms of mass media such as print or published media, news, photography, cinema, broadcast media, advertising, and social media. Around 40,000 years ago where some of our human ancestors painted on cave’s wall and some suggest that it is the first example of communicating through a medium. The recreation of new technologies gives a wider broadcast of information from a given point which we all know as the “Mass Media”, the first technology of this age is paper which is invented in China in about 100 BCE. As technology upgrades in the 20th Century where a communication between
  • 12. Page | 4 two different computers were made through the thing called internet. In the current Century (21st) wherein technology influences almost every person you can see in the world. Nowadays, modernized media such as Social Media, Broadcast Media, and any other forms of media makes our lives easier, and the very common technology now is smartphones, aside from being a portable and handy wherein you can use it every single day, smartphones is a big help too to students, it's like a library in a pocket, a compact multifunctional device that can give you references and/or information needed in your projects every time you want or needed. THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK This chapter describe the theoretical orientation to help us better understand the modernization of media and its effect on student’s academic performance. In this article we reviewed both theoretical and empirical advancement when it comes to modernization of media. • 13. Page | 5 the power of globalization that forced many people to be active in media to cope and survive with the demand of the 21st Century technology. Nowadays, millions of people do their activities on social media because they have the opportunity to view, read, seek and share whatever they like, anywhere, anytime and on any topic (Vicen and Cavus, 2010, Papoola, 2014). The main objective of these research is to prove why modernization of media take effect to student’s academic performance. The figure 1 shows the connection between two different theories made by Brix A. Badar, this two theories aim to replace or to prove why media takes place when it
  • 14. Page | 6 comes to student’s academic performance. The first theory is Uses and Gratification Theory that identify and analyze new forms of media and its importance in different basis(Wikipedia,2004). Another theory that will guide this study is the Walberg’s Theory of Productivity that explains the changes in a student’s academic performance with the relation to student’s ability, motivation, development and environment on school based learning through the help of media(IPL.org). Modernization of media can have a great effect on student’s academic performance. Access to media makes it easier for students to learn, and to become motivated to learn. For example, software programs are available that teach students how to become proficient touch-typists, an essential skill for the digital age. Media is easily and stress free accessible through the Internet in every language imaginable, much of it freely available. Modern media can also help youth to express a productivity by making an art, contents and videos through inexpensive software programs that might help other to gain knowledge or to share your knowledge to them of that certain topic through the internet. Today's youth can use these readily

An easy access portal for every learner that are seeking for information needed to every aspect of education (Mageto J, 2017). CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Figure 2 shows the paradigm of the study using the IPO model. This model is known for being an information known as the input-process-output pattern which is a widely used approach in engineering business system and analysis for describing the structure of information processing program In the final output we will find the effects of Modernization of Media to the Academic Performance of Grade 12 Students.

  • 23. Page | 15 Chapter II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES This chapter shows the Review of Related Literature and Studies on the Modernization of Media and its effect to Academic Performance, its wealth in Literature and Studies, gathered from published literary works and recent studies. In understanding the impact and effect of modernization of media platforms to student’s academic performance has been active area of research in the intersection of the field of Senior High School in Asia Source College of Arts and Technology. This research was primarily focused on knowing the impact and how it’ll effect student’s academic performance as stated above. Statistical data of Statista Philippines shows an increased use of different types of media either mass or social media and some of this media types are educational related such as LinkedIn with more than 8 million users as of 3rd Quarter of 2019 and rapidly grow, as of September 2020 the total user of LinkedIn is 9,377,000 which is accounted as 8.4% of the entire population in the Philippines. The recognition
  • 24. Page | 16 of this increase, as well as questions concerning its impact on student learning and performance with the help of modernized media produced the impetus for this study. The following review of the literature represents the literature related to this research study. Through examination of previous research, the direction of the present study was formulated. Specifically, the chapter is organized into four sections: (a) the local literature related to the study; (b) the foreign literature related to the study; (c) the local study related to the study itself; and (d) the local foreign related to the study itself. Local Literature There is no doubt that the internet and social media makes the world so small. They will have a research tool. Before internet, there are only libraries, research papers and interviews that are used for references. Now, with just one click, they will have what they need for their projects etc. But this can also make teenagers affect their self- confidence (Bon J., 2020).
  • 25. Page | 17 In posts that they usually do, they receive "likes" or "hearts. this is where they get self-validation. But if they get their self-validation only in these situations, their self-confidence has a chance to be low. If it depends on their confidence in social media, it will be weak. In these times, Internet becomes a part of our daily lives, especially with teenagers and students. These helps students in giving information and helps to understand things they don't usually understand. It also helps with schoolwork and it gives out precious knowledge with different things. Like the Internet, there are benefits that social media gives, particularly for students. in its own way, it gives students additional information. With the "share option" it gives students the opportunity to share articles, videos and information to others that can help them with their studies. Also, social media is a network in which it provides communication. these gives students a way to connect, talk and exchange information with others. there are so many benefits social media and Internet gives. But in the other hand, social media has its bad influence. First, this can make students tardy, because they can
  • 26. Page | 18 easily search for the answers to their modules. It also gives wrong information, because not everything on the Internet is true. It can affect the privacy of the students and can be victims of cybercrimes and cyber bullying. and the lastly, this can make the students addicted and consume their time (Socio-Psychology Open Text, 2014). . . . . . . Over 10,000 teenagers aging from 13 to 16 years old participates in a research to see the effects of social media. The participants were interviewed every year from 2013 to 2015. They were ask how often they use social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. if they used these platforms 3 times a day, it wil be counted as "often use" but it was not questioned how long they spend when in the said platforms. The teenagers were placed under a psychological test wherein the said test that it affects both male and female. these are connected from using social media but, it was seen that it affects women more than it affects men. Exposed to cyber bullying are the causes of this psychological distress. Social media became a part of our culture.
  • 27. Page | 19 According to Digital Global Review, across the globe, Filipinos have the most spent time visiting social media sites like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. 4 hours and 17 minutes average were spent by 58% of Filipinos that actively uses social media. it is way far behind Japanese because they spent average of 40 minutes a day. The use of social media affects the studies of students. these might give information and new ideas for the students. There are so many students who uses social media as a source for their studies and projects. One of the best examples is their thesis. Social media are not only for research but can also be used as a platform to share pictures and videos that can entertain and bring joy.………………………………………………………………………………………… Foreign Literature Though social media can increase student learning through student interactions, challenges arise when social media are incorporated into an academic course. Page | 20 using certain types of social media can cause educators to inadvertently fail to provide the resources or encouragement necessary to support student usage and learning (Tarantino, Kirsten, and McDoNough, 2013). This review discusses the connections between student engagement and student learning, followed by the prevalence of social media use and how it can impact peer interactions, collaboration, and knowledge creation that can be related to our study. Even when social media is used for an educational purpose, students incorporate the technology into their lives in a way that may differ from the intentions of the course instructor. For example, off-topic or non-academic discussions occur on social media because of its primary design as a social networking tool. Furthermore, as a student’s age increases, the frequency of off-topic discussions also increases. This indicates that while social media may encourage broader discussions of course content, older students may spend more time than younger students engaging in unrelated discussions. Social media
  • 29. Page | 21 can also negatively affect student GPA as well as the amount of time students spend preparing for class. One explanation for this impact is that social media provides too much stimulation and therefore can distract students from completing their coursework. Another reason for this may be that students who spend more time on social media may have difficulty balancing their online activities and their academic preparation (Arnold and Paulus,2010). This study can easily be connected to our study itself because it draws on the perspectives of the students, the instructor, and an outside observer to explore the intended and unintended outcomes of Ning use. As intended by the instructor, the site effectively served as an information repository and the blogs and discussion forums promoted reflection and review of each other's work. Unintended outcomes included community building and modeling, both of which are types of vicarious interaction that fall into the category of pedagogical lurking. Social network websites grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and
  • 30. Page | 22 inappropriate actions including useless chatting. Based on the above statement we can say that social networking sites may badly affect the academic life and learning experiences of the student. Moreover, the internet is no doubt evolution of technology, but specifically social networks are extremely unsafe for teenagers, social networks become hugely common and well-known in past few years(Kuppuswamy and Shankar, 2010). The relation of our study to this paper is social networking websites distract students from their studies, but these websites can be useful for education based on sound pedagogical principles and proper supervision by the teachers. Moreover, this literary piece concludes that social networking websites have both positive as well as negative impact on the education of youth, depending on one’s interest to use it in a positive manner for his or her education and vice versa. Social media has got much importance because of mostly use by the people for lots of purposes including education. In world changing into digital global village, social
  • 31. Page | 23 networking technology has played a vital role compare to other internet tools (Ullah, 2019). The findings revealed in this article proposed that the social media got much more importance in Social Commerce and is significantly influenced that urge to buy technology. Furthermore, impulse buying tendency moderates all relationships except negative sentiments. Social interaction in the context of impulse buying though users encounter them concurrently and frequently while browsing. Hence, the relation of this study gives a much more modern influence for lots of factor like education which can be used to uphold our research that can be used to classify the effects of modern media to our academic performance. Furthermore, Giving reference of four different research papers that for measuring student academic performance around the world most of the researchers used GPA and the role of effects of Facebook on students in students’ academic in Sri Lankan university, that university grant commission of Sri Lanka decided to measure academic performance by GPA. Facebook is only an electronic
  • 32. Page | 24 communication between human but unfortunately it has become an addiction for all. The impact of Facebook can either be good or bad on university students and in their academic activities. Even though a closer look on the real impact of Facebook reveals that it leads to several problems in student’s academic performances, with the help of a survey conducted to collect the data among more than 250 students of different Universities in Sri Lanka (Thuseethan & Kuhanesan, 2014). Today Facebook serve as the main platform used by the student all around the globe it can easily be related to the study because Facebook is one of the forms of media, social media to be specific but somehow it can destroy someone’s future and academic performance of students. At the same time this study also intended to find the significance of use of medias that take effect of students in their academic performance or succession.
  • 33. Page | 25 Local Studies Social Media is considered a deteriorating agent in academics by some people. The study aims to know the positive or negative effects of social media usage towards student’s academic performance in Iligan City National High School. In this study, the researchers had the sample size of 257 out of 739 Grade 12 Senior High school students from Iligan City National High School as the respondents. Amongst the 257 respondents the researchers randomly picked 10 respondents who were chosen to be interviewed. The researchers concluded that there is no direct relationship between using social media and school performance of the students, since even though the students just use social media for entertainment they still have high and good grades instead of looking for some information related to their lessons. The researchers suggest that students must have control over their usage of social media to avoid negative effects of social media towards academic performance (Branzuela, Bete, Dela Pena, Sagarino and Maneja, 2016).
  • 34. Page | 26 The relation between this study to our research is the possible good and bad effect on a student's academic performance but this study says that it does not cause any harm because many students use social media in their searching for information regarding the lesson they are discussing. They suggested to reduce its excessive use which is social media. To determine the effects of SNSs on academic performance, the researcher used the descriptive correlational method of research. An online survey questionnaire designed using Google docs was distributed to 203 randomly-selected student respondents from the six colleges in Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna. The study found out that all students in Lyceum of the Philippines – Laguna have Facebook accounts and were significantly registered to more than one SNSs account. The results of the study showed a statistically significant positive relationship between time spent by students on SNSs and their academic performance. The student-respondents tended to use SNSs to interact with their friends and not use for academic reasons. Specifically, the study found out that
  • 35. Page | 27 the higher the time spent on SNSs showed the lower is the time spent on studying. Hence, correlation analysis showed an inverse relationship between the GPA and the number of SNSs accounts being maintained by the students, the frequency of SNSs use, since when they have SNSs, length of SNSs use, and the number of study hours. The results revealed that as these mentioned variables increases, the GPA also increases, showing that SNSs made contribution in the attainment of higher grades. However, such relationships are not significant. Therefore, the study found that SNSs usage had no significant relationship on student academic performance. The relation between this study to our research is that social networking sites do not affect a student's grade because The improvement in the grade relies on other factors within the teaching-learning process and thus could not be attributed to the use of SNs alone (Morallo, 2013). Social networking media has been the major source of communication between individuals in the world over, hence, the label cyber-world. This includes Facebook, Twitter,
  • 36. Page | 28 MySpace, Instagram, Flicker, Frienster, Blogs, Podcast,Youtube, Tumblr and Skype, among others. Users of these forms of media made use of such technology gadgets as cell phones, tablets, laptops, desktop computers, and e- readers. Researchers all over the world have varied findings on the effects of these forms of media on the academic performance of students. Those students who used the media wisely, their academic performance improved. However, those who failed to regulate their use of these social networking tools negatively affected their studies which oftentimes led to their addicted use. In general, the study found out that the exposure of the IMEAS students to the social networking media positively affected their academic performance. Hence, the University must implement policies and projects designed for more easy access of the students to the Facebook network site in the school campus. In contrast, there is also this very disturbing finding of the study which disclosed that the students of IMEAS, University of Southern Mindanao, Kabacan, Cotabato used the social networking media almost daily since majority of them answered to have used said form of media 5-6 days a week at
  • 37. Page | 29 an average of about 1-2 hours every session (Kulidtod and Pasagui,2017). The relation between this study to our research is the use of media wisely can improve the academic performance of the student but, frequent use can cause addiction which will affect the academic performance of a student. It is recommended that the USM must regulate the proper time usage by the students of social networking media in the campus in order not to destruct with their classroom activities. Social Media is considered as phenomenal in today’s generation. It conquered the world by storm and became more popular to the youth of most nations including the Philippines. This research aims to study the relationship of Social Media in relation to the Academic Performance of the students of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology at Centro Escolar University-Malolos. Among the one thirty-eight (138) respondents drawn using stratified random sampling there are 45 first years, 37 second and third years and 19 fourth years. There are 102 males and 36 females participated in this study. Seventy-one (71) or

Sixty-one (61) or 44.3% falls under the Occasional User of Social Media while seventy-seven (77) or 55.7% falls under Frequent User of Social Media. This represents that there are more Frequent User of Social Media among the respondents participated in this study. Students’ Prelim and Midterm Average and their Social Media usage were correlated using Pearson ( r ) correlation and evaluated that there is moderate significant relationship between Social Media and the Academic Performance of the BSIT students of Centro Escolar University -Malolos, Bulacan (Tamayo and Dela cruz, 2014). The relation between this study to our research is the use of social media by students can really help in learning especially in students who have taken degree in information technology.
  • 39. Page | 31 According to Ma. Mercedes Rodrigo, Ph.D.a, Michael Grosch, Ph.D.b and Juan miguel Andres(2013) in their study "Media Usage by Filipino Students" states that Between the different traditional learning tools and the rapid rise of technology and ease of access to them, students are presented with a multitude of avenues for learning. With so many resources available, students had to learn to be selective. By finding out what tools and services students use the most, this research aims to determine how students avoid information overload and getting lost in cyberspace. To do this, a survey was carried out at the Ateneo de Manila University in Manila, Philippines. Using a print questionnaire, 942 students were asked 145 questions about their media usage for learning and related topics. Analysis of the data included analysis of variance and comparing mean values by creating rankings of the different media services. It was aimed to find out what services are used the most, and to what extent. The results showed that students are more inclined to use online resources such as Google, online course material and literature, though there is still great appreciation for traditional learning media such as books and printed handouts from teachers. Filipino
  • 40. Page | 32 students seem to prefer self-learning, whether through traditional or non-traditional means, rather than learning through social media (Rodrigo, Grosch, and Andres,2013). The relation between this study to our research is the use of a student's traditional or non-traditional in his studies where he will be comfortable learning a lesson he will study but many of the Filipino students are self- learning rather than traditional and non-traditional means or even social media. Foreign Studies The influence of social media participation on academic performance. The sample consisted of 1960 students taking one of two courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level, respectively (Faculty of Education, National Distance Education University, Spain), of whom 411 students carried out an activity based on social media participation. We used a mixed quantitative (descriptive analysis and ANOVA) and qualitative (content analysis) design. Our results showed that the students who participated in a social media-based activity presented better academic performance than those who did not carry out any activity
  • 41. Page | 33 or who took part in a more traditional learning activity. We conclude that regardless of educational level, social media participation exerts a positive influence on performance. Consequently, it is important to consider the variable of social networking site use because this can partially explain academic performance. We also found that the networks generated during the course did not constitute stable communities of practice. Our main recommendation is that three stages of instruction should be considered when designing a course based on social media participation: beginners, intermediate, and professional (Santoveña-Casal, 2019). The relation between of this study and our study is the impact of social media on academic performance, this study shows that social media shows a positive impact on academic performance, as the students who participated in it showed better performance in academic work or academic performance and the use of social media shows a positive influence on learning.
  • 42. Page | 34 India is the third biggest country in terms of internet users in the world, with a high social and mobile audience. Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc., diverting students from their studies. Students spend more time on social media than they do do using personnel email. Even Though, there is loss of privacy and safety, social media provides opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interest. Today, the main aim of the student should be education and their future career. However, many students rely on the accessibility of information on social media. That means reduced focus on learning and retaining information. The study also points out the popularity of social networking sites among student community. The social networking sites and social media have revolutionized the world, bringing us closer than ever before. However, students can exploit this and use it for a better life, a better tomorrow. It should be used to connect, stay in touch, share views but not waste time on. The sample size for the study is 100. A questionnaire is designed to determine the various factors of social media that have impact on student’s education. Variables identified are
  • 43. Students devoted more time to social media than their studies and many of them relying on social media. Which means that their focus on their studies is reduce, and the use of social media is given more importance. This study looks at social media network participation and academic performance in senior high schools. The study was aimed at identifying social media network sites and their usage among students, how students networked and participated on social media networks, time invested by students on social networks, the effects of social media on students’ grammar and spelling as well as the effects of social network participation on the student’s academic performance within the context of the social learning and the use and gratification theories. To achieve the objectives of the research, the study used a mixed method

The study revealed that majority of respondents used Whatsapp and Facebook for making friends and chatting. In addition, majority of respondents experienced negative effects 2 such as poor grammar and spelling, late submission of assignment, less study time and poor academic performance due to the heavy participation on social media networks. Furthermore, there was a high addiction rate among students in the usage of social media networks. Nevertheless, there were cases where others experienced improvement in their readings skills as result of participation on social media networks. Also, respondents shared ideas, discussed, and shared examination questions among themselves on social media networks. The study recommended the strict enforcement of Ghana Education Service rule on electronic devices usage in schools, promotion of social media usage for academic purpose, counselling for addicted students and the use of the right grammar and spelling when participating on social networks (Mingle and Adams, 2015).
  • 45. Page | 37 This study shows that majority of the respondents experienced negative effects because of using social network or social media. Some of its effect are late submission of assignments, less study time and poor academic performance due to excessive use of social media. Media is playing a very prominent role in the life of a modern man. There are a large number of people who use different type of social media in order to keep them update and connected with the entire world. Using social media affects their study and academic performance and ultimately their result become effective. Some of the students cannot remain away from using social media and it affects their academic performance badly. The purpose of this research is to find out the impact of using social media on academic performance of students at graduate level . The population of this study was all male and female graduate (final year) students of post graduate colleges of district Vehari. 300 students were selected as a sample of study randomly. A questionnaire comprised 40 statements based on 5-points Likert scale was developed for data collection. The respondents are to tick any one out of the five given

Our results show that the students use social media as a helping tool in their studies but it badly social affects their studies (Kausar1 and Ghafoor , 2019). This study shows that using of social media had a negative effects on academic performance of students, they use social media as tool to their study, but unfortunately it affects their studies badly. The result of this study showed that, though social media have negative effects on teenagers such as lack of privacy, distracting students from their academic work, taking most of their productive time, and such like, they also have benefits and can be used appropriately. Despite the unhealthy impact of social media many students are engrossed in spending most of their hours on social media sites which includes the most popular Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Social media has embedded a negative image upon many minds however it is also perceived as a pathway to develop vital knowledge and social skills among

Over the years many studies have been conducted over the impact of social media on academic performance of students and it demonstrates a strong relationship between the two variables. Therefore, our research aims to study the relationship between the social media and students’ academic performance in Pakistan (Hasnain, Nasreen, Ijaz, 2015).

Statistical Tool/ Treatment of Data The Statistical tool that we’re going to use is the Chi Square statistic wherein it measures how a model compares to actual observed data. The data used in computation of the chi-square must be random. This is often used as the statistical tool used in hypothesis testing. 1. Chi-square Formula: A chi-square (χ2) statistic is a test that measures how a model compares to actual observed data. The data used in calculating a chi-square statistic must be random, raw, mutually exclusive, drawn from independent variables, and drawn from a large enough sample.
