THE PROBLEM
The Effects of Unrestricted Usage of Social Media to the Academic Performances
Of Selected G12 SHS-IT Students from PHINMA - Cagayan de Oro College
Background Information of the Study
[3] LEGAL BASES RELEVANT TO THE STUDY
Based on Social Media Act (2017) state that the explosion of online activity in recent years has
led to several pitfalls that need to be addressed, one of which is the abuse and misuse of social media,
which should be curtailed.
The internet and social media are firm fixtures in the daily lives of billions of people around the
world. Social media as a new medium communication is one of the newest trends in information
technology. People can instantly connect and have correspondence with one another by just the use of
their cell phones, laptops, or tablets through these social media sites. However, for every social media
site may bring clearly depict the impact of the usage of Social Networking Sites among college students
on their academic performance (Davis, Mark & Barbara; 2008). Internet usage is negatively associated
with academic performance of student users and destructive impact of internet is far more momentous
than its advantages (Englander, 2010). Kirschner and Karpinski (2009) state that users of Social
Networking Sites devote lesser time to their studies and subsequently had lower grades in their academic
courses. Further Karpinski (2009) says that among various unique distractions of every generation,
social networking sites have been proved as the major distraction of current generation.
[1] PROBLEMATIC SITUATION WHICH PROMPTED TO CONDUCT THE STUDY
What concerns the researchers is that, studies show that students are constantly using social
media without any limitation and has been the root of poor academic performances.
[2] STATISTICAL DATA THAT SUPPORTS OUR CLAIMS
According to Jennifer Walsh (2013), students who spent the most time using social media
had fewer academic behaviors, such as completing homework and attending class, lower academic
confidence and more problems affecting their school work, like lack of sleep and substance use. Social
network websites grab attention of the students and then diverts it towards non-educational and
inappropriate actions including useless chatting (Kuppuswamy &Shankar, 2010). Social media provides
too much stimulation and therefore can distract students who spend more time on social media may have
difficulty balancing their online activities and their academic preparation. (Hurt et al., 2012; Patera et al.,
2008). According to AERS (2009) that users of Social Networking sites study less and generated lower
grades. Similarly, Banquil and Burce (2009) found a continuing drop of grades among student who were
users of social networking sites. In addition, Boogart and Robert (2006) declared that the use of social
networking sites and Facebook have detrimental impacts on academic performance of student users.
Subsequently, Grabmeier (2009) observed that students having lower GPAs were mostly those who log
in any social networking sites. With these facts, it is necessary to limit the usage of social media for the
sake of eradicating the chances of poor academic performances.
[4] EMPHATIC AND EXPLOSIVE
The researchers have observed that students are always keeping up with the trends through social
media. Social media provides a way for people to share ideas, content, thoughts, and relationships
online. It is prominent in making lives much easier than ever before. Thus, attracts students strongly.
Lately, the use of social media among the students has become widespread. Its unrestricted usage has
extremely increased in recent times. The perils of its effects on the academic performance of the over-
involved students are disturbing. Student that spends excessive time on social media become dependent
on it and is believed that their academic performance diminishes completely. The researchers have
conceived the idea of limiting the usage of social media as it poses a threat on the academic
performances of the students.

Unrestricted Usage of Social Media
Dependent Variable

Academic Performances of SHS Students
1. Written Works
2. Performance Tasks
Research Questions
The study aims to determine the effects of unrestricted usage of social media to the academic
performances of senior high school students from PHINMA - Cagayan de Oro College.
More specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What are the effects of unrestricted usage of social media to the academic performances of G12-
IT SHS students?
2. How do these effects of unrestricted usage of social media affect students’ academic
performances in terms of written works and performance tasks?
Research Hypotheses:
1. Unrestricted usage of social media has an effect to the academic performances of G12 SHS-IT
students.
2. Unrestricted usage of social media has an effect to SHS students’ academic performances in
terms of written works and performance tasks.
Scope and Delimitation
The study was focused on the Effects of Unrestricted Usage of Social Media to the Academic
Performances of Selected G12 SHS-IT students from PHINMA - Cagayan de Oro College during the
first semester of the Academic Year 2018-2019. The respondents of the study were 100 selected G12
SHS-IT students who spent the most time using social media with no prior limitations. There were
certain limitations in conducting the study, as it is understood that it is a part of the research work. First,
the researchers had trouble gathering data or information from the respondents due to time constraints.
Second, the research material available was not sufficient due to the researchers’ lack of financial
support. Lastly, majority of the researchers lack experience in doing research. In handling these
limitations, the researchers worked hard on managing the time as well as the resources. As for the lack
of experience, the researchers worked in unison, guided by the proper procedure of conducting a study.
The researchers considered working on this study to find out if there is an effect on the academic
performances such as written works and performance tasks.
Rationale
To the Teachers, the findings of the study will enable to discover the negative effects of
unrestricted usage of social media and not only see the positive side. Since social media have
contributed a lot in the society.
To the Parents, the results of this study will be a great help to the parents especially those who are
bothered about their children spending too much time on using social media.
To the Students, the results of this study will benefit the students. With this, they will start to
realize that using social media without limitation can influence their academic performances in school.
To the School, the findings of the study will enable them to guide the students properly on using
the social media and prevent the factors that might affect the students’ academic performances.
Definition of Terms
For the purpose of clarifying the ideas, the following important terms are defined according to how they
were used in the study:
Diminished – The state of a certain thing that is decreasing or decreased in some way.
Conceived – A process of creation or formulation of (a plan or an idea) in the mind.
Pitfalls – Problems that aren’t noticeable or unaware to the public that is unrecognizable.
Curtailed – Controlling the extent of something or limiting the potential of (something).
Stimulation – A factor that affects the behavior of people prompting or causing them to become active.
Detrimental – Tend to cause harm to a person or a thing in a way that is not easily seen or noticed.
Eradicate – To remove or destroy (something), leaving no trace of its existence.
Prominent – Known or recognized by many people, widely and popularly known.
Peril – Something that is likely to cause harm or a serious and immediate danger.
Constraints – A limitation or restriction, something that limits or restrict someone or something.
Sufficient – Having (something) as much as necessarily needed or equal to what is needed that is
enough.
