The media we consume affects us, but we also affect it. Most people think that they perceive truth objectively, as it is. However, we all see things from a point of view. Furthermore, people tend to seek media that supports their points of view. This can serve to further entrench us in a more narrow way of looking at things while at the same time making us feel more certain that our point of view is objective and neutral. We also learned in Chapter 8 that people have biases (such as the confirmation bias) that make it hard for them to embrace ideas that contradict with their own points of view. This week’s discussion seeks to explore how we can free ourselves from these tendencies. Keep in mind that you are not only transitioning out of support and into the concession, but also out of the rebuttal and into another support paragraph or conclusion.
2. Concession – For a strong concession/rebuttal section, it is important that you identify an opposition view point that you can empathize with or at least find validity in. This is important because a strong concession will spend time clarifying, in an even handed manner, what this point is and why it is compelling. Keep in mind that a good concession point convinces your audience that you have looked at all perspectives on the issue, and that you have done so with care and diligence. This strengthens your position in the audiences’ mind and makes them more likely to agree with you in the end. It is important to avoid a list of concession points and focus in on one specific point the opposition may have to your argument.
3. Rebuttal – This section should take your opposition to task. Analyze why this opposition point is weak and is ultimately not strong enough to sway your opinion. Try to be specific in this section and not fall into expressing grand generalities. Concession/Rebuttal Paragraph
A concession/rebuttal (counterargument) paragraph needs to be composed of a concession point that looks at an opposing viewpoint and your rebuttal of that point. It is important to maintain a professional and empathetic voice throughout this section. Remember it will be the strength of ideas that will sway your audience, not the snippiness in your voice. Here are some things to remember when creating and completing this element of your research essay.
1. Transitions – Remember that you are changing tasks when you begin to look at an opposing viewpoint. The previous section was filled with support points that clarified your stance. You need to alert your audience to the change of purpose as you enter your concession. A proper transition should only be a sentence or two, but it will clearly signal to your audience that you are doing something different. In the same way that your concession point is narrow and specific, you want to be sure that your refutation is aimed at picking apart this specific point. Be careful of the rebuttal sounding too much like a conclusion or recap of your major support points. Continue to be mindful of your tone and don’t go overboard cutting the opposition down, but you do want to be on the offensive.

The four core values I chose are as listed
Appreciate and support the bond between the child and family. A bond between a child and family is very strong. A parent is it's child 's first teacher. Entering school can be stressful and nerve wrecking for both child and parent. I will let the parents know that they can be involved with their children by volunteering their time to the classroom. I will encourage parents and family to come see how their child is learning through plays or show casing their work at the end of each lesson. For example, we just finished our lesson on plants and how they grow. We drew pictures of seeds, stems, flowers, dirt, etc. We even planted some seeds. Now it's time for performance. The children worked so hard in making their costumes out of construction paper and learning to memorize their lines. Now it is time to invite the parents to watch their children act out what they learned about plants.
Respect the dignity, worth, and uniqueness of each individual (child, family member, and colleagues). It is important to respect the children, families, and colleagues. Every child is different, I will learn about the children's uniqueness and teach the children that everyone learns differently. In my classroom we will discuss and learn about the student's culture and habits. I can one day have parents bring in a dish from their culture and as we sitting down in the classroom talking about how and where this dish comes from, we can then taste it.
Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect. At the start of the day I will greet each child as an individual. I want the children to know that I trust and respect them and in return they can trust and respect me.
Base our work on knowledge of how children develop and learn. I will have a classroom where the child can develop their physical, cognitive,and affective domains. I will have centers for art, reading, writing, and imaginary. With rules written on the rules for the children to follow.
My knowledge and understanding of these values will help me to be a better Early Childhood educator and colleague because I can clearly see that becoming a teacher will be a big impact on the children. The first concept would be Child-rearing styles. In this movie, Sonny adopted a permissive parenting style where he allowed the child to make his own choices, so much that he even allowed him to choose his own name! Sonny later learns that this style of parenting is causing trouble in the child's schooling and resorts to being more assertive in the child's decision making process.

My second concept would be aggression. Sonny displays hostility through both physical and verbal aggression towards others. The child observes this behavior and imitates the same behaviors in situations. The child, Julian, actually feels seeing others get physically hurt is comical. It seems that Sonny's outrageous and aggressive behavior is a result of his father's authoritarian child-rearing style.

The third concept I would cover in relation to the movie is resilience. If not for this 5 year-old's resilience, Sonny probably would have placed the child with social services. Julian was "delivered" to Sonny's door with no idea as to who Sonny was or why his mother left him there. We later learn that Julian's mom dies from cancer. While with his mother there probably was a considerable amount of neglect being as though she was probably to weak and sick to tend to her son needs and the next best person to leave him to is a complete stranger. Considering this, Julian was an adaptive and happy young boy. Also, the sunglasses that Sonny gives Julian help Julian adapt to anxious situations and calm his fear.
My professors comment on my answers was:

- 1. The media we consume affects us, but we also affect it. Most people think that they perceive truth objectively, as it is. However, we all see things from a point of view. Furthermore, people tend to seek media that supports their points of view. This can serve to further entrench us in a more narrow way of looking at things while at the same time making us feel more certain that our point of view is objective and neutral. We also learned in Chapter 8 that people have biases (such as the confirmation bias) that make it hard for them to embrace ideas that contradict with their own points of view. This week’s discussion seeks to explore how we can free ourselves from these tendencies. Prepare : Before addressing this discussion, take a look at the following video about the relationship between media and ideology [Link to video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W4-XVZ7GQD8 ] Make sure to read Chapter 8, for example on “Media and Mediated Images” (including all sub-headings). Reflect : Think about the ways in which people consume media that supports their own points of view. Consider what we might do to learn to think more objectively and see things from multiple points of view. Write : Answer the following questions: In what ways are people manipulated by the media that they consume? Make sure to give specific examples. What types of consequences can follow from people having more choices of what media they can consume? Do we control our media or does it control us?
