OF
THE MOVIE
The Martian
The Martian is a scientific movie. Astronauts gone to a planet named
Acidalia Palanitia. Their leader was Commander Melissa Lewis. The name of
the main character was Mark Watney. When they were working on a planet
one of the crew members informed the commander that a sand storm is
coming. So commander decided to abort the mission and get into the ship
but mark didn’t make it to the ship .Other members thought that Watney
was dead. So they told their commander to leave the planet otherwise they
would also be stucked in that planet. Commander took the decision to
launch the ship. NASA declared Mark as a dead in the press conference after
receiving the news from commander Lewis. When Watney get his sense
back alarm was beeping and he could know that his oxygen level was critical
in his suit. Beside of this he found himself stuck with a electrical wire. He
found himself alone and done his treatment alone. Next he started to make
a record of his life in mars. He thought that his survive will be a great
surprise to his crew member, NASA and the entire world. He knew that he
will die any minute because of food, water, oxygen etc. If any miracle
happened he will survive so he took a challenge not to die in this planet. So
next day he calculated that with the storage of food he can survive for 400
sol. So he needs to figured out a way to grow food for 3 years on the planet
where nothing grows. Luckily he was a botanist so he had some knowledge
of growing something on the planet. At first he wanted to grow some
potatoes and also worked to create water by basic formula of CO2. He was
successful to his experiment. After few days later NASA came to know that
he was alive and decide to announced it into public. They thought Watney
was upset he would give up but on the other side he took this as a
challenge. Watney and NASA trying to connect with each other. He was also
planning to get back to earth with his crew members. He faces a lot of
problem to contact with NASA and at the end of the day he was successful.
After 2 month later NASA contact to the crew that he was alive.
Commander felt guilty to leave him behind. One day at mars Watney was
closing the door of his camp at that time suddenly an explosion occurred
and destroyed everything . He was upset and angry. Now he could not grow
anything. NASA decided to send him food but failed. China wanted to help
NASA. Suddenly one astrodynamics named Rich Purnell shared his idea and
NASA accepted that idea and started working on it. The process started that
mark was meeting with his crew mates. NASA send some food and fuel to
rescue Mark Watney.
At that time Mark Watney named himself as space pirates a joke for some
specific reason. So at next he shut down everything and left the camp to
met his crew. He lived 461 sol alone. Four and half billon years there was
nothing but Mark was there alone. Finally at sol 561 the process was
started. Mark started his journey to met his crew mates. People were looking
for a good news on earth. They were watching everything through TV.
Watney was to excited for his journey. Watney’s ship was controlled by
Martinez through the hermes . Suddenly Watney lost his sense. After a few
minute he got back his sense. Commander Lewis has gone to grab him to the
space and she was succeed to grab him. Mark Watney complete the
challenge to survive alone in mars. After returning to Earth, Watney becomes
a survival instructor for astronaut candidates
Basically, The Martian is a movie which teaches us to never lose hope when
you know you can die in your future days by living alone.

INTRODUCTION
THE MARTIAN
“The Martian” by Andy Weir is the story of Mark Watney who is a crew
member of the Ares 3 mission to Mars. The crew had traveled the nearly
year-long journey from Earth’s orbit to Mar’s orbit on the Hermes and had
used the Mars descent vehicle to land on the planet’s surface. The Hub, the
living quarters for the crew, was one of the items that was dropped earlier as
well as the MAV (Mars ascent vehicle) which would enable them to return to
the orbiting Hermes for their journey home.
After the astronauts had erected the Hub and created a safe environment
within it, they faced a vicious and unrelenting sandstorm. Visibility was zero
on the planet and NASA feared that this storm. NASA deemed the storm
dangerous and life-threatening for the astronauts and scrubbed the mission.
The astronauts were to board the MAV and return to the Hermes for their
flight home.
As the astronauts were heading to the MAV, the storm raged even more
ferociously. As Mark stumbled toward the MAV as best he could, an antenna
dislodged from the Hub and struck him with full force. It knocked him down
and he soon lost consciousness. The other crew members made it to the
MAV and the headcount was five instead of six. Houston, they had a
problem.
The astronauts’ spacesuits are equipped with monitors that send vital sign
stats to the other astronauts. There were no signs of vitality reported from
Mark’s suit. He was dead. The commander tried in vain to find Mark’s body. It
was impossible given the wind and sand to see more than a few inches in
front of her face and she had to give up her search. The MAV was revved up
and ready to ascend to their rendezvous with Hermes. They had to leave
their dead colleague behind.
But Mark woke up. He wasn’t dead but he was abandoned. When he saw
that the MAV was gone, he knew that he had the challenge of his life ahead
of him.
NASA noticed that things were moving. The rover vehicle was parked in one
spot one day and in another the next. It meant only one thing – Mark Watney
was alive. NASA put one-hundred percent of their efforts on figuring out a
way to rescue Mark or at least keep him alive until Ares 4 arrived four years
later.
1
In the beginning of their communications, Mark discovers two main things:
one is that it is going to take 4 years for a new mission to come and rescue
him, and that to survive until the mission, he is going to have to grow his own
food. Watney is a really good botanist.
Mark starts to plan his potato farm.
NASA notices that he Mark isn't going to be able to survive until the rescue
mission arrives, so they decide to send out supplies, but due to a rushed job,
the rocket explodes soon after take-off. It seems that there is no hope of
Mark getting rescued. Mark's Ares 3 crewmates turning around and picking
up Mark from space, after he launches off of the surface if Mars, before
returning home.
Due to an electric drill overloading the circuits of Pathfinder, Mark's
communication with NASA is severed. But he knows that his crew is coming
back for him. He is going to have to travel to the site of the future Ares 4
mission, where there is another rocket waiting for the crew that is supposed
to arrive years in the future. After about a year of almost starving himself,
Mark prepares for the several-thousand-mile-long journey. With few
incidents, Mark makes it to the site of the Ares 4 mission and, after little time
of relaxation, he gets in contact with NASA and the Ares 3 crew again through
the rocket at the site.
It is time for Mark to take off. He does, but he does not reach the height that
he needed to because he had taken off the nose of the rocket and put canvas
over it, and that canvas had come off. The Ares 3 crew uses boosters meant
for landing to get close enough to Mark and they blow up the front of the
ship and let all the air out to slow themselves down. This works, and in the
end Mark is happy aboard the ship and headed for home.

MAIN CHARACTERS
OF
THE MOVIE
3
Characters
Mark Watney
"Mars will come to fear my botany powers."
Portrayed By: Matt Damon
Mission Specialist 3 for the ARES III (specializing in botany) and the titular Martian. He is
stranded on Mars when the team is forced to abort the mission due to a storm, and
presumed dead.
The Ace: Brilliant, good looking, built like an athlete, resourceful, calm under pressure,
has a terrific attitude in the face of insurmountable odds, and is an astronaut. Subverted
in that he's in fact the lowest-ranked member of the crew and is, more or less, the
handyman and superfluous gardener. Then double-subverted as those are precisely the
skills needed for a lone individual to stay alive when stranded on Mars.
Determinator : Despite all the challenges and setbacks he is faced with, Watney
never gives into despair for any length of time. When he returns and takes up
teaching for NASA, he explains to his students that this is a necessary skill for
any astronaut to survive in the deadly, unforgiving depths of space. Things that
Mark Watney refuses to be killed by on Mars include a ruptured space suit
• A spike in his stomach
• Starvation
• Freezing Martian temperatures
• Inability to communicate with Earth
• An exploding hab
• A thousand-mile dust storm
• An overturned rover
• Going faster than any man in history
• Commander Lewis' terrible disco music
The Gardener: His skills as a Mundane Gardener allow him to supplement his limited
food supply with potatos he grows on mars.
Space Pirate: He has a reasonable claim to being humanity's first, as Mars is technically
classified as international waters under maritime rules and he's hijacking the Ares IV
MAV.
Science Hero: Watney survives by applying his chemistry, engineering, and botany
knowledge to surviving on Mars long enough for a rescue mission, gaining the
admiration of the entire world in the process.
Living Legend: This becomes Mark's status once he returned from Mars, with students
acknowledging him as such, saying that it is an honor to meet him, and are all
enthusiastic to ask him questions during the lectures he gives. 4
Cdr. Melissa Lewis
The ARES III's mission commander
Portrayed By: Jessica Chastain
The Atoner: In contrast to the movie where it is Beck that saves Watney, she is the one
who volunteers to grab hold of Watney during his "Iron Man" spacewalk to the Hermes in
order to make amends for inadvertently leaving him on Mars.
The Chains of Commanding: Takes the news that they left Watney behind particularly
hard, as it was her call. She also refuses to let her crew alleviate her guilt. They were
following orders. She left Watney to die on Mars.
The Comically Serious: When paired off as a foil against Watney and Martinez's antics.
Mainly because she can shut them both up by remotely muting their radios. Disco Dan:
she is a massive fan of 70's disco soundtracks, which to Watney's chagrin are the only
available music he has to play whilst stranded. He lets her have it with "You. Have. Terrible
taste. In. Music!" when she rescues him at the end of the film.
Happily Married: Her husband even shares her passion for disco. Or at least enables it.
Reasonable Authority Figu:re When she receives the surreptitious Purnell Maneuver
data, she refuses to make the call alone, as doing so would risk her crewmates' lives (not
to mention their ability to ever go into space again, to say nothing of probably getting
herself and Martinez, who are members of the Navy and Air Force respectively, court-
martialed). Even when Martinez jumps at the opportunity, she calmly and politely reins
him in so that they can discuss the pros and cons of going along with the plan.
5
Vincent Kapoor
NASA's Director of Mars missions
Portrayed By: Chiwetel Ejiofor
Beleaguered Bureaucrat: Out of all the characters, he has the most managerial duties, and
is probably the most exhausted person next to Mark and Bruce.
Oh My Gods! : When asked if he believes in God, in the film he responds that he has a
Baptist mother and Hindu father, giving him even more options.
Voice with an Internet Connection: Becomes the main point of communication between
Watney and the rest of Earth.
6
Mindy Park
A staffer at Mission Control who is the first to discover that Watney is still alive
Portrayed By: Mackenzie Davis
Almighty Janitor: She has one job: Keep track of Watney through the satellites. For
someone who works at NASA and has a Master's Degree, this job is akin to being a highly
paid voyeur, but she has the most experience in tracking Watney, and is talented in noticing
and deducing his situation based on low-resolution imagery.
Rich Purnell
A NASA astrodynamicist who works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
Portrayed By: Donald Glover
Black and Nerdy: Brilliant astrodynamicist who is the one to come up with the plan that
rescues Watney in the end.
Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He behaves erratically and doesn't know who the director of NASA is.
Is nevertheless a steely-eyed missile man.
Character Tics: In the movie (especially the Extended Edition), he has a tendency to wring
his wrist when he's working on his calculations.
Must Have Caffeine: He is depicted to be a caffeine addict.
Science Hero: Comes up with a flight plan allowing the Hermes to swing around Earth and
return to Mars to pick up Watney. For it, the Hermes crew bestow him the NASA honor of
"Steely-Eyed Missile Man".

PROBLEMS
OF
THE MOVIE
8
Problems Of The Movie
‘THE MARTIAN’
1.Team mistake: When Martinez and Watney were talking loudly and joking, all the team
members were disturbed by this and this hampered their work. As a result Commander
Lewis told Johansson to Cut off Watney’s communication so that what he says no one can
hear but if the other members talk he can only hear them. After the cut off a storm was
detected and all were busy in solving the problem. So as a result they forgot to reconnect his
communication system. So he could not give his feedback while the storm turned
dangerous.
2.Lack of Leadership skills (Captain Lewis): Commander Lewis while taking decisions made a
lot of delay and wrong decision in the movie. In the rescuing part of Watney Commander
Lewis sent Chris Beck to intercept with Watney. But Becks expression said he was nervous
and unable to perform the task. We can see the impact of her decision in the intercepting
moment of Watney when she went outside Hermes by herself suddenly. Before that she
ordered Alex Vogel to make a bomb whereas a reactor specialist was Johansson. In this case
she chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb. This was done to reduce the
velocity of Hermes. Johansson was the more appropriate person to make the bomb.
3.Lack of Responsibility (Teddy Sanders): In the movie we can see that Teddy Sanders the
executive director of NASA had some responsibility problem. He did not give any decision to
search for finding the dead body of astronaut Mark Watney. He said to the world that
Watney was dead. But this was just a wrong perception of other team members. After 41
sols he wanted to give Watney nations highest respect and he wanted to solve the PR
problem. By doing this he thought it would secure his position in NASA. He neglected his
responsibility of finding an astronaut injured in Mars because of he was afraid of his position
and the organization reputation. As an example: He told Vincent Kapoor that if he posts a
dead astronauts picture in the front the daily newspaper, congress won’t give any
permission for upcoming Ares missions.
4.Confusing time Calculation: In the movie there are several places where we see that the
mathematical calculation of sols and the earth days are not given for the audience to
understand. The audience will feel disconnected from the movie while understanding the
movies time perception.
5.Mark Watney’s lack of Meal calculation: Mark Watney colonized Mars by planting
potatoes and it was for a limited amount of sols. When he initially started to eat 2 to 3
potatoes at a time he should have thought that he had limited potato and it won’t last for
long. As a result when the Hub kitchen blows up and all his potato plants died he had to eat
a potato by slicing it by 3 to 4 pieces and ate a single piece for 2 to 3 days.
6.Emotional unstableness of Lewis: As a team leader, we see that Captain Lewis was seen a
little depressed since it was had passed four months after Watney‘s death. As a commander
and a team leader she should not look depressed because this will affect her work
environment.
9
7.Wrong shell selection of taking Battery: With a view to contracting with NASA, Mark
Watney needed to recharge the battery of Pathfinder. For recharging the battery he took the
power system from the virus detect shell which causes the virus detect shell manifested and
blew up the hub. As a result it spoils all of the potatoes.
8.Careless about Health Issue: In the rover Watney solved his temperature problem by
radioactive thermal generator inside his room rather than setting the vacuum room. It leads
to harm his health. Because radioactive molecular has bad effect on human body. Watney
would die of cancer due to excessive cosmic radiation as Mars doesn’t have much of a
magnetic field.
9.Risky process of making Water: As we know that Mars has liquid water under the soil. Matt
Damon’s character took hydrazine from the rocket fuel and dissociated it into nitrogen and
hydrogen, which you can do, and he burned the hydrogen with oxygen to make water. That’ll
certainly work Mars. Water is available in its natural state on Mars as ice, permafrost, or
soaked into the soil. Martian soil is about 5% water by weight at low latitude, and up to 60%
water near the poles. Martians are not going to get their water by importing hydrazine from
Earth and burning it with precious cabin oxygen.
10.Having no Optional plan: NASA wanted to use the Parnell’s idea which added 568 day
extra for their mission .But this the only one idea by which they could secure Watney with
the coordination of JPL within a short time. If the crew member were not agreed to journey
total 900 days in space, they had no other plan as an optional plan for the short run as
Watney’s potatoes were blew up. They had just long run plans that ARES-4 would bring him
after 4 year and they resupply Watney to Mars although they failed to resupply 1st time.
11.Lack of liaison: When the 1st mission of resupply to Watney failed, CNSI wanted to help
them and discussed themselves why NASA did not tell them to help. Before helping one of
the executive of this institutions told other that NASA would not give us the credit in front of
the world. But at last they helped. But NASA did not ask any help for anyone.
12.Delay Decision making process: At the very beginning, Henderson wanted to tell the
other crew members about the existence of Watney on Marks. But he was influenced by
Teddy and Vincent Kapoor so that at 54 sols he did not tell them. If they tell them before,
Watney may secure earlier with the assistance of Martinez’s friend named Rich Parnell .By
using his plan at last NASA could secure Watney.
13.Trying to take Advantage of Watney’s Death: After the declaration of giving the nation’s
highest respect to Watney, Vincent Kapoor suggested Sanders that they should bring
Watney’s dead body. He had a plan for bringing his dead body which indicates the little bit
wrong thinking. As we know that NASA works for human well-being, so they are given fund by
many other countries and so every mission’s fund given by the Congress. Sanders wanted to
tell Congress along with the world that ARES -6 missions would bring Watney’s dead body
.their major vision would be the research about Mars and part of this mission would take his
dead body. Actually they wanted to utilize the people’s sympathy for approving the new
mission which would bring them new project that was ARES-6. Then Vincent Kapoor told if we
would bring Watney’s dead body within one year, Congress would more impress by their work
by which they might get more projects. Their organization’s top management’s thinking was
like that. After passing four month they did not even inspected wheatear team’s perception
right or wrong and did not take any steps even to bring or take picture of dead body of him.
10
14.Lack of Proper Planning and execution of the rescue mission: In the movie we see that
there is problem a while the second mission was in mind. NASA crew members did not plan
out the launch. They only gave importance to time as a result they forgot about how the
rocket will be built, how much supply it will carry and how much fuel it will need to carry
Watney out of the Mars atmosphere.
15.Lack of Inspection of First Supply and Rescue Mission: In the movie Bruce NG was given 47
days to build the rescue ship. But in a conversation he told that he needed 15 more days to
ready the rescue ship on time because he was behind his schedule. After hearing these Teddy
said I can’t give you that much of a time. But you only get 13 days. For inspection and to
mount the prove Bruce needed 3 days but Teddy told that he needed to do it in 2. Vincent
approved his decision.10 days are for tests and inspections. Teddy asked what is the chances
of failure are. Vincent replies 1 in 20. Then Teddy suggested we will skip the inspection
because it will reduce time limit. After hearing it Annie Montrose said but we have told it to
the press. Teddy replied it’s on me.
16.De-motivate of Rich Parnell: In the movie we see that Parnell came up with an idea
reducing time for Hermes to go to Mars. By going faster Ares 3 crew can reduce their space
time journey by 300 sols. When he was explaining the idea Teddy (Director of
NASA) did not motivate him rather he was obsessed by him. Parnell’s well thought out idea
made the rescue easier. Teddy should respect and motivate his decision. But in the movie
when Parnell was finished explaining the idea Teddy said to get out.
17.Wrong representation of scientific facts
 Strom Issue
 Time Issue
 Gravity Issue
 Ease Of Communication Between Space And Earth
 Tendency Of Taking Others Credit
 No Plans For Overcoming The Threats
11
MANAGEMENT
THEORIES
RELATED
TO
THE MOVIE
12
Planning:
Planning is the most important part for every kind of work. In the movie my
point of view is that there are three kinds of planning:
Long Term Planning: Ares ||| full mission planning was long term
planning. These mission takes about three years.
Operational Plan: NASA’S Ares ||| mission was only planned for Mars. The
whole team of NASA work for complete the Mars mission at that time.
Single Use Plan: Rich Purnell rescue plan was single use plan. This plan was
only to rescue Mark Watney from Mars.
GOAL:
In the beginning of the movie NASA and crew’s goal was explore the Mars. But
when mark Watney was stuck in that planet their goal was rescuing mark. At
that time Mark‘s goal was to survive alone in that planet.
Communication:
Organization communication is a process by which people can contact with
each other to achieve goal. In the movie there were perfect communication
process between NASA and crew but unfortunately Mark stuck on the planet
and communication was destroyed for few days. At that time mark faces a lot
of problems but end of the day they succeed to communicate.
Culture:
NASA’s organizational culture is strong culture. Because of their culture in the
movie they did not take help from other organization. When Chinese National
space Administration contact NASA for helping them NASA told Chinese
National space Administration that NASA will not tell anybody about the
mission. In NASA there are a lot of facilities for employees that they can work
with freedom and because of these there are lots of innovative idea. These are
the NASA’S organizational culture.
Motivation:
Motivation is the important part of every employee. Through motivation they
can achieve their goal easily. In the movie there were lack of motivation
because NASA’s director demotivate Rich Purnell of his work.
13
Bounded Rationality:
Bounded rationality means decision making that is rational, but bounded by
individuals ability to process information. In the movie NASA’s director Teddy’s
decision making was Bounded rationality. Only he can make all the decision in
the movie.
Skills:
In NASA there are lots of people with different skills. In the movie there are
three type of skills:
Conceptual Skills: Teddy had conceptual skill in the movie. He only take
decisions for the organization.
Communication Skills: Mandy parker had communication skills in the
movie. she work to stabilize the contact between NASA and crew. At the middle
of the movie she worked to stabilize the contact between NASA and Mark.
Technical Skills: in the movie Bruce had technical skills. He only worked for
NASA to build space craft and other equipment that helps the crew to their
mission.
Time Management:
Time management is one of the important part for an organization to achieve
their goal in a specific time. In the movie there were lots of confusion and
miscalculation of time.
Trust and Openness:
In the movie the pillar of relationship between Bruce and Vincent was trust and
openness. They worked together to stabilize a communication between Mark
and NASA. They also work for rescuing Mark.
Never Give Up :
Keep pushing forward in the face of failure. You can either give up or look for
work around. Obviously for astronauts Mark Watney, giving up means dying.
But we generally don`t want to give up on our projects, either even if it`s not
life-or-death.
14
Managing Social Responsibility:
Annie Montrose the director of media relations for NASA. She was primarily
concerned about public perception of NASA during the Watney rescue. At the
middle of the movie she forced director Teddy to communicate with media and
tell them that Mark is alive.
Team work:
Team work is a vital point of organization success. The Ares||| crew members
could rescue Mark Watney from Mars because of team orientation. They had a
suitable communication between all of the crew members. That’s why they
succeed to their mission.
Optional plan:
Optional plan can make the mission easy during a lot of problems. In the movie
if the crew members were not agreed to journey total 900 day in space. They
had no other plan as an optional plan to rescue Mark. So he had to live for 4
years in Mars. But at the middle of the movie rich Purnell made the optional
plan to rescue Mark.
Decision Making :
In the movie there was a delay of decision making .At the very beginning
,Henderson wanted to tell the other crew members about the existence of
Watney on Mars .But Teddy and Vincent Kapoor influenced him that he did not
tell them. If they told them before ,Watney may secure earlier with the
assistance of Rich Purnell.
Innovation :
Rich Purnell had a innovative idea in the movie . By his idea NASA could save
Mark Watney in a few days . But NASA demotivate Rich`s idea during the movie.
At the end of the movie they could rescue Watney only because of Rich`s idea.
Omnipotent View of Management :
Omnipotent view means that managers directly responsible for an
organization`s success or failure . In the movie Teddy had omnipotent view. His
decision was responsible for NASA and Ares ||| mission`s success or failure.
15
Monitoring and Controlling :
In the movie NASA monitored and controlled the Ares ||| mission from earth .
They made the plan and directed the Ares ||| crew members to accomplish
the mission . They had the full control to abort the mission also. They observed
the situations and took fair decision to rescue Mar Watney.
Leadership & Responsibility :
A perfect leader can make the mission easy and successful. But in the movie
there was lack of leadership skill. Commander Lewis while taking decisions lot
of delay and wrong decision was seen in the movie . She ordered Alex Vogel to
make a bomb where as a reactor specialist was Johansson. In this case she
chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb.
In the movie we can see that Teddy Sanders the executive director of NASA had
some responsibility problem. He didn`t give any decision to search for finding
the dead body of Mark. He said to the world that Mark was dead . So in the
movie there was lack of responsibility .
Stakeholders are Your Hidden Strength :
After the failure of first supply probe mission, things look very bleak for Mark .
But thanks to the positive relationship between NASA and the Chinese National
space Administration , the opportunity emerges for another shot at it. We
might feel that a given stakeholder has low influence or interest in our project
this should never be on invitation to ignore them. You never know when their
support might be the last piece of puzzle required for your project success .
Freedom:
In NASA every employee has freedom to accomplish their goal. Like Rich Purnell
who had too much freedom to make a rescue plan for mark. When the movie
introduced Rich Purnell we saw that he was drinking too much coffee and
funniest conversation between him and Vincent that prove his freedom of
work.

LESSONS
FROM
THE NOVIE

Lessons From The Movie
“THE MARTIAN”
1.Keep Working No Matter What:
In life we tend to sit down and feel sorry for ourselves when we’re hit by a
situation. Keep busy, keep our mind distracted, and keep moving slowly
towards where we want to be. Do the most menial tasks if we have to, or
exercise intensely to remove our mind from our problems. Once we’ve
stopped endlessly thinking about the issue, we’ll find it’s a lot easier to start
seeing positive solutions and hope in the situation.
2.One Step At a Time:
If the challenge is too big to solve in one go then just solve the immediate
problem in front of us and then the next one and then the next. One step at a
time, we just keep going. We cannot try to do more than we can do, or we
will end up doing nothing.
At the end of the movie, Wattney gives a class and says something along the
lines of: ‘You just keep solving one problem and then the next and then the
next. Eventually if you get to solve enough problems you can come home.
3.Make A Short Term Plan:
Mark knew that the next mission to Mars, Mars 4, would arrive in about four
years. he didn’t know how he could survive four years, he made a plan to fix
the radio, so that he could attempt to communicate with earth. Mark didn’t
have answers to everything, and he only had imperfect answers to what he
did know, but he went ahead with a plan and a purpose. He took action,
doing the best that he could for the moment, and figured he would solve the
other problems as he went along.
4. Focus On The Moment:
When Mark discovered that he had been left for dead on Mars, he knew he
was desperately out of luck. But he didn’t want to die on the surface, so he
made his way into the Hub. Even the knowledge that the situation was
hopeless didn’t stop Mark from taking the immediate actions necessary to
ensure his short term survival.
“The power for creating a better future is contained in the present moment:
You create a good future by creating a good present.” – Eckhart Tolle
18
5. Keep Records:
Clutter, being unorganized, and not having accurate records causes
frustration. Being able to find what we need, when we need it is
encouraging. We get the momentum we need to take more action. Also,
others are encouraged because when we ask for something and we have it
readily available, they know they can trust and depend on us.
6.Journal:
Use your journal to write out our story. We should record our history for
our self and for others who will follow in our footsteps. Journaling help us
to grow and to get a great lesson out of our day. What can we get out of
our day? What did we grow from and who were we a blessing to?
7.Sometimes We really Do Know The better:
When we’re on the ground in a situation, we can see better than those
outside the situation what is going on. We actually in a better position to
make judgment calls. Likewise, all tests of faith involve an element of
intuition, and we are learning to trust and listen to our intuition in these
trials – often because we turn to God/the Universe and listen when we
have no other option left. Trust what our gut is saying to us. Listen to what
others have to say, but make the best decision for us in that moment. No
one will ever be able to see as well as we what we need.
8. Team Work:
There is nothing like a strong team. A strong team that offsets each others
strengths and weaknesses. A team that is willing to fight for one another.
The best teams are great even when we are across the miles.
9.Don’t Give Up:
“Never give up, and be confident in what you do. There may be tough times,
but the difficulties which you face will make you more determined to achieve
your objectives and to win against all the odds.” – Marta
Mark Watney may be a fictional character, but the lessons we learned can be
put to good use in the real world. When we find yourself stalled when
working toward a vision or goal, think to our self, “How can I be like Mark?”
19
10.There’s Always a way:
No matter what happens in our situation or our life there is always a way. It
may not always be the way we see it happening or how we expect it to
play out, but it will be resolved. We must not lose faith or give up.
Sometimes our way out may seem completely ridiculous or we may not
even think it will work, but it is a chance. And sometimes a chance is all we
need!

SOLVE
OF
THE MOVIE
21
Solve Of The Movie
1.Need to Right Shell Selection Of Taking Battery:
Mark Watney needed to recharge the battery of Pathfinder. For recharging
the battery he took the power system from the virus detect shell which
causes the virus detect shell manifested and blew up the hub.
In the movie they did not explain the real usage of the RTG. The RTG
produces 1500 watts of heat and 100 watts of power. The 100 watts of power
also reduces recharge the battery of Pathfinder.
2.Need to More Careful About Health Issue:
In the rover Watney solved his temperature problem by radioactive thermal
generator inside his room. Watney would die of cancer due to excessive
cosmic radiation .
Mark should creates a heat reservoir by submerging the RTG in a container
of water. This warms the water up. Mark can now bubble the cold sub-
freezing air through the warm water to raise its temperature. The RTG
produces 1,400 Watts of heat, giving Mark the energy he needs to survive his
long trip.
3.Need Not to Take Any Risky Process of Making Water:
Matt Damon’s character took hydrazine from the rocket fuel and dissociated
it into nitrogen and hydrogen and he burned the hydrogen with oxygen to
make water.
If I was stranded on Mars I would just make water out of the soil. Water is
available in its natural state on Mars as ice, permafrost, or soaked into the
soil. Martian soil is about 5% water by weight at low latitude, and up to 60%
water near the poles.
4.Need To Have a Optional Plan:
If the crew member were not agreed to journey total 900 days in space, they
had no other plan. They had just long run plans that ARES-4 would bring him
after 4 year. NASA can't just send a resupply mission right away to give
Watney needed the food, water, air and other basic supplies he desperately
needs for survival.
They Should try again. The planets have to line up just right to send a
spacecraft from Earth to Mars using the standard route, called a Hofmann
transfer. But That alignment only happens once every 26 months. They
Should plan for this.
The increased time is due to two factors- waiting for a desired planetary
alignment and the required flight time itself. So, Watney needs to wait well
over a year for any supplies to arrive.
22
5.Need To Liaison:
When the 1st mission of resupply to Watney failed, CNSI wanted to help
them and discussed themselves but NASA did not tell them to help. Before
helping one of the executive of this institutions told other that NASA would
not give us the credit in front of the world. But at last they helped.
It’s a huge lack of liaison. Here It was a life of a man who was outside the
world into mars. But NASA did not ask any help for anyone. If CNSI didn’t help
may be the result would not be the same.
6.Need to Fast in Decision Making Process:
Henderson was influenced by Teddy and Vincent Kapoor so that at 54 sols he
did not tell them. If they tell them before, Watney may secure earlier with
the assistance of Martinez’s friend Rich Parnell. By using his plan at last NASA
could secure Watney.
Henderson should tell about this early when he saw Watney. Teddy and
Vencent have already decided not to tell the Ares 3 crew that Watney is alive.
But finally the crew member were agreed to journey total 900 days in space
and back Watney.
7. Need to Motivate Rich Purnell:
In the movie Rich Purnell came up with a plan reducing time for Hermes to
go to mars. By his idea of rescue mission make easier to rescue mark. But he
didn’t get motivated by director of NASA. If he got motivated and he will do
more innovated work in future.
8.Improve Team Management:
As Lewis told Johansson to cut off Watney’s communication, so that he could
not give his feedback while the storm turned dangerous. If they improved
their team management they didn’t have this problem and Watney could
communicate while storm turned dangerous.
9.Need More Leadership Skills:
Commander Lewis should make the mission easy and successful. In this case
she chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb. So she needs more
leadership skills to make this mission successful.
23
10.Need to be More Responsible:
Teddy Sanders should take responsibility to find Watney’s death body and
then declare about his death. But he didn’t find out that. So he should more
responsible about his mission.
11.Clear Concept About Time Calculation:
In this movie there need clear concept about time calculation so that
audience will understand the movie’s time perception.
12.Strong Mentality And Positive View About Every Situation:
Every leader should have strong mentality and positive view about every .As
a leader she should not look depressed about this incident.
13. Need Inspection of First Supply And Rescue Mission:
We have seen in the movie that they didn’t inspect the space rocket because
they wanted to start rescue mission fast and for this reason the can reduce
the time. But I believe that if they inspect the rocket it would be more
smoothly to rescue mark.
14. Need of Proper Planning And Execution to Rescue:
We see in the movie that proper planning and execution was needed to
rescue mark properly. Because planning is the most important part of doing
work correctly. But we see that lacking of food, supplies and equipment are
not sufficient. So from my point of view is that Watney’s rescue plan should
have executed properly that how much reassures he has to live and how will
the rocket carry him to earth.
24
CONCLUSION
25
“The Martian” – a review
There are many things to like about Ridley Scott’s movie “The Martian”,
starring Matt Damon in the central role as Mark Watney, an American
astronaut stranded on Mars. The movie is long - 2 hours and 22 minutes - but
it keeps you engaged and entertained right through; it is science fiction, but
not the kind that tries to impress you with excessive special effects; it is a
movie that you can truly enjoy with your family, without worrying about
“explicit content”; and it celebrates the calm, fight –to-the-finish spirit of a
human being facing certain death. The timing of this movie release is also
terrific – with the recent revival of interest in Mars due to successful
American and Indian missions, evidence of water on the planet, talk of
manned explorations, and so on.
The story line is simple enough. A huge storm on the Martian surface forces
the Ares III mission commander (played well by Jessica Chastain) to take the
decision to blast off on an emergency basis, without astronaut Mark Watney.
All communication with him has been lost, and he is presumed dead in the
storm. In any case, there is no time to go and look for him. Half buried by the
storm, Mark (Matt Damon) wakes up and realizes that he is all alone on Mars,
with very limited food and water, and no way of communicating with his
fellow astronauts or mission control back home. Does he survive? Can he be
rescued, when the next mission is four years away? How does the Ares III
crew (especially the commander) handle the guilt of having left him behind?
What should NASA do? What can Matt do, except lie down and accept the
inevitable? The answers to these questions form the crux of the movie.
As the astronaut, Matt Damon does a great job, playing the role of the never-
say-die hero with the right combination of finesse, self-deprecating humor,
and a light touch. Here is a guy staring at sure death, and he just buckles
down to “solving one problem at a time”, without striking heroic poses or
collapsing in despair. Watney – a biologist - also figures out how he can set up
a potato farm using his own waste (for want of a better word), and a
contraption to produce water from hydrogen and oxygen. Early in the movie,
reflecting on the challenges ahead, Mark Watney says, “I’m going to have to
science the shit out of this”. That’s a pretty funny line, and it sums up his
philosophy quite well. At the same time, his fears and anxieties also get
portrayed with subtlety and realism.
Matt’s role is not an easy role, given that he is the only character on the
screen for extended periods of time. How should he communicate what he is
thinking, his fears and anxieties, and what he plans to do? Ridley Scott, the
director, solves this problem by having Damon start a video log in which he
regularly records his thoughts, plans and actions. This actually works well,
and you end up quite liking the character.
26
Mark start a video log in which he regularly records his thoughts, plans and actions
It is evident that the director has had expert help (including from NASA) in
getting the science and technology parts mostly right – with very few
liberties taken for the sake of the storyline or drama. NASA is shown in
reasonably good light, with their scientists even reaching out to their
counterparts in China for help. Quite a few scenes feature conference calls
through large video screens, and you can see the Cisco logo on the screens
clearly. A nice marketing coup, I must say.
The photography is excellent, and the special effects and background score
are never intrusive.
So, should you go and see this movie? Yes, you should. You come out feeling
good – and that’s not something you can say about a lot of movies these
days. Take your family along – the theme is “universal”, in every sense of the
word.

  • 6. The Martian The Martian is a scientific movie. Astronauts gone to a planet named Acidalia Palanitia. Their leader was Commander Melissa Lewis. The name of the main character was Mark Watney. When they were working on a planet one of the crew members informed the commander that a sand storm is coming. So commander decided to abort the mission and get into the ship but mark didn’t make it to the ship .Other members thought that Watney was dead. So they told their commander to leave the planet otherwise they would also be stucked in that planet. Commander took the decision to launch the ship. NASA declared Mark as a dead in the press conference after receiving the news from commander Lewis. When Watney get his sense back alarm was beeping and he could know that his oxygen level was critical in his suit. Beside of this he found himself stuck with a electrical wire. He found himself alone and done his treatment alone. Next he started to make a record of his life in mars. He thought that his survive will be a great surprise to his crew member, NASA and the entire world. He knew that he will die any minute because of food, water, oxygen etc. If any miracle happened he will survive so he took a challenge not to die in this planet. So next day he calculated that with the storage of food he can survive for 400 sol. So he needs to figured out a way to grow food for 3 years on the planet where nothing grows. Luckily he was a botanist so he had some knowledge of growing something on the planet. At first he wanted to grow some potatoes and also worked to create water by basic formula of CO2. He was successful to his experiment. After few days later NASA came to know that he was alive and decide to announced it into public. They thought Watney was upset he would give up but on the other side he took this as a challenge. Watney and NASA trying to connect with each other. He was also planning to get back to earth with his crew members. He faces a lot of problem to contact with NASA and at the end of the day he was successful. After 2 month later NASA contact to the crew that he was alive. Commander felt guilty to leave him behind. One day at mars Watney was closing the door of his camp at that time suddenly an explosion occurred and destroyed everything . He was upset and angry. Now he could not grow anything. NASA decided to send him food but failed. China wanted to help NASA. Suddenly one astrodynamics named Rich Purnell shared his idea and NASA accepted that idea and started working on it. The process started that mark was meeting with his crew mates. NASA send some food and fuel to rescue Mark Watney.
  • 7. At that time Mark Watney named himself as space pirates a joke for some specific reason. So at next he shut down everything and left the camp to met his crew. He lived 461 sol alone. Four and half billon years there was nothing but Mark was there alone. Finally at sol 561 the process was started. Mark started his journey to met his crew mates. People were looking for a good news on earth. They were watching everything through TV. Watney was to excited for his journey. Watney’s ship was controlled by Martinez through the hermes . Suddenly Watney lost his sense. After a few minute he got back his sense. Commander Lewis has gone to grab him to the space and she was succeed to grab him. Mark Watney complete the challenge to survive alone in mars. After returning to Earth, Watney becomes a survival instructor for astronaut candidates Basically, The Martian is a movie which teaches us to never lose hope when you know you can die in your future days by living alone. • 9. INTRODUCTION THE MARTIAN “The Martian” by Andy Weir is the story of Mark Watney who is a crew member of the Ares 3 mission to Mars. The crew had traveled the nearly year-long journey from Earth’s orbit to Mar’s orbit on the Hermes and had used the Mars descent vehicle to land on the planet’s surface. The Hub, the living quarters for the crew, was one of the items that was dropped earlier as well as the MAV (Mars ascent vehicle) which would enable them to return to the orbiting Hermes for their journey home. After the astronauts had erected the Hub and created a safe environment within it, they faced a vicious and unrelenting sandstorm. Visibility was zero on the planet and NASA feared that this storm. NASA deemed the storm dangerous and life-threatening for the astronauts and scrubbed the mission. The astronauts were to board the MAV and return to the Hermes for their flight home. As the astronauts were heading to the MAV, the storm raged even more ferociously. As Mark stumbled toward the MAV as best he could, an antenna dislodged from the Hub and struck him with full force. It knocked him down and he soon lost consciousness. The other crew members made it to the MAV and the headcount was five instead of six. Houston, they had a problem. The astronauts’ spacesuits are equipped with monitors that send vital sign stats to the other astronauts. There were no signs of vitality reported from Mark’s suit. He was dead. The commander tried in vain to find Mark’s body. It was impossible given the wind and sand to see more than a few inches in front of her face and she had to give up her search. The MAV was revved up and ready to ascend to their rendezvous with Hermes. They had to leave their dead colleague behind. But Mark woke up. He wasn’t dead but he was abandoned. When he saw that the MAV was gone, he knew that he had the challenge of his life ahead of him. NASA noticed that things were moving. The rover vehicle was parked in one spot one day and in another the next. It meant only one thing – Mark Watney was alive. NASA put one-hundred percent of their efforts on figuring out a way to rescue Mark or at least keep him alive until Ares 4 arrived four years later. 1
  • 10. In the beginning of their communications, Mark discovers two main things: one is that it is going to take 4 years for a new mission to come and rescue him, and that to survive until the mission, he is going to have to grow his own food. Watney is a really good botanist. Mark starts to plan his potato farm. NASA notices that he Mark isn't going to be able to survive until the rescue mission arrives, so they decide to send out supplies, but due to a rushed job, the rocket explodes soon after take-off. It seems that there is no hope of Mark getting rescued. Mark's Ares 3 crewmates turning around and picking up Mark from space, after he launches off of the surface if Mars, before returning home. Due to an electric drill overloading the circuits of Pathfinder, Mark's communication with NASA is severed. But he knows that his crew is coming back for him. He is going to have to travel to the site of the future Ares 4 mission, where there is another rocket waiting for the crew that is supposed to arrive years in the future. After about a year of almost starving himself, Mark prepares for the several-thousand-mile-long journey. With few incidents, Mark makes it to the site of the Ares 4 mission and, after little time of relaxation, he gets in contact with NASA and the Ares 3 crew again through the rocket at the site. It is time for Mark to take off. He does, but he does not reach the height that he needed to because he had taken off the nose of the rocket and put canvas over it, and that canvas had come off. The Ares 3 crew uses boosters meant for landing to get close enough to Mark and they blow up the front of the ship and let all the air out to slow themselves down. This works, and in the end Mark is happy aboard the ship and headed for home. 2
  • 12. Characters Mark Watney "Mars will come to fear my botany powers." Portrayed By: Matt Damon Mission Specialist 3 for the ARES III (specializing in botany) and the titular Martian. He is stranded on Mars when the team is forced to abort the mission due to a storm, and presumed dead. The Ace: Brilliant, good looking, built like an athlete, resourceful, calm under pressure, has a terrific attitude in the face of insurmountable odds, and is an astronaut. Subverted in that he's in fact the lowest-ranked member of the crew and is, more or less, the handyman and superfluous gardener. Then double-subverted as those are precisely the skills needed for a lone individual to stay alive when stranded on Mars. Determinator : Despite all the challenges and setbacks he is faced with, Watney never gives into despair for any length of time. When he returns and takes up teaching for NASA, he explains to his students that this is a necessary skill for any astronaut to survive in the deadly, unforgiving depths of space. Things that Mark Watney refuses to be killed by on Mars include a ruptured space suit • A spike in his stomach • Starvation • Freezing Martian temperatures • Inability to communicate with Earth • An exploding hab • A thousand-mile dust storm • An overturned rover • Going faster than any man in history • Commander Lewis' terrible disco music The Gardener: His skills as a Mundane Gardener allow him to supplement his limited food supply with potatos he grows on mars. Space Pirate: He has a reasonable claim to being humanity's first, as Mars is technically classified as international waters under maritime rules and he's hijacking the Ares IV MAV. Science Hero: Watney survives by applying his chemistry, engineering, and botany knowledge to surviving on Mars long enough for a rescue mission, gaining the admiration of the entire world in the process. Living Legend: This becomes Mark's status once he returned from Mars, with students acknowledging him as such, saying that it is an honor to meet him, and are all enthusiastic to ask him questions during the lectures he gives. 4
  • 13. Cdr. Melissa Lewis The ARES III's mission commander Portrayed By: Jessica Chastain The Atoner: In contrast to the movie where it is Beck that saves Watney, she is the one who volunteers to grab hold of Watney during his "Iron Man" spacewalk to the Hermes in order to make amends for inadvertently leaving him on Mars. The Chains of Commanding: Takes the news that they left Watney behind particularly hard, as it was her call. She also refuses to let her crew alleviate her guilt. They were following orders. She left Watney to die on Mars. The Comically Serious: When paired off as a foil against Watney and Martinez's antics. Mainly because she can shut them both up by remotely muting their radios. Disco Dan: she is a massive fan of 70's disco soundtracks, which to Watney's chagrin are the only available music he has to play whilst stranded. He lets her have it with "You. Have. Terrible taste. In. Music!" when she rescues him at the end of the film. Happily Married: Her husband even shares her passion for disco. Or at least enables it. Reasonable Authority Figu:re When she receives the surreptitious Purnell Maneuver data, she refuses to make the call alone, as doing so would risk her crewmates' lives (not to mention their ability to ever go into space again, to say nothing of probably getting herself and Martinez, who are members of the Navy and Air Force respectively, court- martialed). Even when Martinez jumps at the opportunity, she calmly and politely reins him in so that they can discuss the pros and cons of going along with the plan. 5
  • 14. Vincent Kapoor NASA's Director of Mars missions Portrayed By: Chiwetel Ejiofor Beleaguered Bureaucrat: Out of all the characters, he has the most managerial duties, and is probably the most exhausted person next to Mark and Bruce. Oh My Gods! : When asked if he believes in God, in the film he responds that he has a Baptist mother and Hindu father, giving him even more options. Voice with an Internet Connection: Becomes the main point of communication between Watney and the rest of Earth. 6
  • 15. Mindy Park A staffer at Mission Control who is the first to discover that Watney is still alive Portrayed By: Mackenzie Davis Almighty Janitor: She has one job: Keep track of Watney through the satellites. For someone who works at NASA and has a Master's Degree, this job is akin to being a highly paid voyeur, but she has the most experience in tracking Watney, and is talented in noticing and deducing his situation based on low-resolution imagery. Rich Purnell A NASA astrodynamicist who works at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Portrayed By: Donald Glover Black and Nerdy: Brilliant astrodynamicist who is the one to come up with the plan that rescues Watney in the end. Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He behaves erratically and doesn't know who the director of NASA is. Is nevertheless a steely-eyed missile man. Character Tics: In the movie (especially the Extended Edition), he has a tendency to wring his wrist when he's working on his calculations. Must Have Caffeine: He is depicted to be a caffeine addict. Science Hero: Comes up with a flight plan allowing the Hermes to swing around Earth and return to Mars to pick up Watney. For it, the Hermes crew bestow him the NASA honor of "Steely-Eyed Missile Man". 7
  • 17. Problems Of The Movie ‘THE MARTIAN’ 1.Team mistake: When Martinez and Watney were talking loudly and joking, all the team members were disturbed by this and this hampered their work. As a result Commander Lewis told Johansson to Cut off Watney’s communication so that what he says no one can hear but if the other members talk he can only hear them. After the cut off a storm was detected and all were busy in solving the problem. So as a result they forgot to reconnect his communication system. So he could not give his feedback while the storm turned dangerous. 2.Lack of Leadership skills (Captain Lewis): Commander Lewis while taking decisions made a lot of delay and wrong decision in the movie. In the rescuing part of Watney Commander Lewis sent Chris Beck to intercept with Watney. But Becks expression said he was nervous and unable to perform the task. We can see the impact of her decision in the intercepting moment of Watney when she went outside Hermes by herself suddenly. Before that she ordered Alex Vogel to make a bomb whereas a reactor specialist was Johansson. In this case she chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb. This was done to reduce the velocity of Hermes. Johansson was the more appropriate person to make the bomb. 3.Lack of Responsibility (Teddy Sanders): In the movie we can see that Teddy Sanders the executive director of NASA had some responsibility problem. He did not give any decision to search for finding the dead body of astronaut Mark Watney. He said to the world that Watney was dead. But this was just a wrong perception of other team members. After 41 sols he wanted to give Watney nations highest respect and he wanted to solve the PR problem. By doing this he thought it would secure his position in NASA. He neglected his responsibility of finding an astronaut injured in Mars because of he was afraid of his position and the organization reputation. As an example: He told Vincent Kapoor that if he posts a dead astronauts picture in the front the daily newspaper, congress won’t give any permission for upcoming Ares missions. 4.Confusing time Calculation: In the movie there are several places where we see that the mathematical calculation of sols and the earth days are not given for the audience to understand. The audience will feel disconnected from the movie while understanding the movies time perception. 5.Mark Watney’s lack of Meal calculation: Mark Watney colonized Mars by planting potatoes and it was for a limited amount of sols. When he initially started to eat 2 to 3 potatoes at a time he should have thought that he had limited potato and it won’t last for long. As a result when the Hub kitchen blows up and all his potato plants died he had to eat a potato by slicing it by 3 to 4 pieces and ate a single piece for 2 to 3 days. 6.Emotional unstableness of Lewis: As a team leader, we see that Captain Lewis was seen a little depressed since it was had passed four months after Watney‘s death. As a commander and a team leader she should not look depressed because this will affect her work environment. 9
  • 18. 7.Wrong shell selection of taking Battery: With a view to contracting with NASA, Mark Watney needed to recharge the battery of Pathfinder. For recharging the battery he took the power system from the virus detect shell which causes the virus detect shell manifested and blew up the hub. As a result it spoils all of the potatoes. 8.Careless about Health Issue: In the rover Watney solved his temperature problem by radioactive thermal generator inside his room rather than setting the vacuum room. It leads to harm his health. Because radioactive molecular has bad effect on human body. Watney would die of cancer due to excessive cosmic radiation as Mars doesn’t have much of a magnetic field. 9.Risky process of making Water: As we know that Mars has liquid water under the soil. Matt Damon’s character took hydrazine from the rocket fuel and dissociated it into nitrogen and hydrogen, which you can do, and he burned the hydrogen with oxygen to make water. That’ll certainly work Mars. Water is available in its natural state on Mars as ice, permafrost, or soaked into the soil. Martian soil is about 5% water by weight at low latitude, and up to 60% water near the poles. Martians are not going to get their water by importing hydrazine from Earth and burning it with precious cabin oxygen. 10.Having no Optional plan: NASA wanted to use the Parnell’s idea which added 568 day extra for their mission .But this the only one idea by which they could secure Watney with the coordination of JPL within a short time. If the crew member were not agreed to journey total 900 days in space, they had no other plan as an optional plan for the short run as Watney’s potatoes were blew up. They had just long run plans that ARES-4 would bring him after 4 year and they resupply Watney to Mars although they failed to resupply 1st time. 11.Lack of liaison: When the 1st mission of resupply to Watney failed, CNSI wanted to help them and discussed themselves why NASA did not tell them to help. Before helping one of the executive of this institutions told other that NASA would not give us the credit in front of the world. But at last they helped. But NASA did not ask any help for anyone. 12.Delay Decision making process: At the very beginning, Henderson wanted to tell the other crew members about the existence of Watney on Marks. But he was influenced by Teddy and Vincent Kapoor so that at 54 sols he did not tell them. If they tell them before, Watney may secure earlier with the assistance of Martinez’s friend named Rich Parnell .By using his plan at last NASA could secure Watney. 13.Trying to take Advantage of Watney’s Death: After the declaration of giving the nation’s highest respect to Watney, Vincent Kapoor suggested Sanders that they should bring Watney’s dead body. He had a plan for bringing his dead body which indicates the little bit wrong thinking. As we know that NASA works for human well-being, so they are given fund by many other countries and so every mission’s fund given by the Congress. Sanders wanted to tell Congress along with the world that ARES -6 missions would bring Watney’s dead body .their major vision would be the research about Mars and part of this mission would take his dead body. Actually they wanted to utilize the people’s sympathy for approving the new mission which would bring them new project that was ARES-6. Then Vincent Kapoor told if we would bring Watney’s dead body within one year, Congress would more impress by their work by which they might get more projects. Their organization’s top management’s thinking was like that. After passing four month they did not even inspected wheatear team’s perception right or wrong and did not take any steps even to bring or take picture of dead body of him. 10
  • 19. 14.Lack of Proper Planning and execution of the rescue mission: In the movie we see that there is problem a while the second mission was in mind. NASA crew members did not plan out the launch. They only gave importance to time as a result they forgot about how the rocket will be built, how much supply it will carry and how much fuel it will need to carry Watney out of the Mars atmosphere. 15.Lack of Inspection of First Supply and Rescue Mission: In the movie Bruce NG was given 47 days to build the rescue ship. But in a conversation he told that he needed 15 more days to ready the rescue ship on time because he was behind his schedule. After hearing these Teddy said I can’t give you that much of a time. But you only get 13 days. For inspection and to mount the prove Bruce needed 3 days but Teddy told that he needed to do it in 2. Vincent approved his decision.10 days are for tests and inspections. Teddy asked what is the chances of failure are. Vincent replies 1 in 20. Then Teddy suggested we will skip the inspection because it will reduce time limit. After hearing it Annie Montrose said but we have told it to the press. Teddy replied it’s on me. 16.De-motivate of Rich Parnell: In the movie we see that Parnell came up with an idea reducing time for Hermes to go to Mars. By going faster Ares 3 crew can reduce their space time journey by 300 sols. When he was explaining the idea Teddy (Director of NASA) did not motivate him rather he was obsessed by him. Parnell’s well thought out idea made the rescue easier. Teddy should respect and motivate his decision. But in the movie when Parnell was finished explaining the idea Teddy said to get out. 17.Wrong representation of scientific facts  Strom Issue  Time Issue  Gravity Issue  Ease Of Communication Between Space And Earth  Tendency Of Taking Others Credit  No Plans For Overcoming The Threats 11
  • 21. Planning: Planning is the most important part for every kind of work. In the movie my point of view is that there are three kinds of planning: Long Term Planning: Ares ||| full mission planning was long term planning. These mission takes about three years. Operational Plan: NASA’S Ares ||| mission was only planned for Mars. The whole team of NASA work for complete the Mars mission at that time. Single Use Plan: Rich Purnell rescue plan was single use plan. This plan was only to rescue Mark Watney from Mars. GOAL: In the beginning of the movie NASA and crew’s goal was explore the Mars. But when mark Watney was stuck in that planet their goal was rescuing mark. At that time Mark‘s goal was to survive alone in that planet. Communication: Organization communication is a process by which people can contact with each other to achieve goal. In the movie there were perfect communication process between NASA and crew but unfortunately Mark stuck on the planet and communication was destroyed for few days. At that time mark faces a lot of problems but end of the day they succeed to communicate. Culture: NASA’s organizational culture is strong culture. Because of their culture in the movie they did not take help from other organization. When Chinese National space Administration contact NASA for helping them NASA told Chinese National space Administration that NASA will not tell anybody about the mission. In NASA there are a lot of facilities for employees that they can work with freedom and because of these there are lots of innovative idea. These are the NASA’S organizational culture. Motivation: Motivation is the important part of every employee. Through motivation they can achieve their goal easily. In the movie there were lack of motivation because NASA’s director demotivate Rich Purnell of his work. 13
  • 22. Bounded Rationality: Bounded rationality means decision making that is rational, but bounded by individuals ability to process information. In the movie NASA’s director Teddy’s decision making was Bounded rationality. Only he can make all the decision in the movie. Skills: In NASA there are lots of people with different skills. In the movie there are three type of skills: Conceptual Skills: Teddy had conceptual skill in the movie. He only take decisions for the organization. Communication Skills: Mandy parker had communication skills in the movie. she work to stabilize the contact between NASA and crew. At the middle of the movie she worked to stabilize the contact between NASA and Mark. Technical Skills: in the movie Bruce had technical skills. He only worked for NASA to build space craft and other equipment that helps the crew to their mission. Time Management: Time management is one of the important part for an organization to achieve their goal in a specific time. In the movie there were lots of confusion and miscalculation of time. Trust and Openness: In the movie the pillar of relationship between Bruce and Vincent was trust and openness. They worked together to stabilize a communication between Mark and NASA. They also work for rescuing Mark. Never Give Up : Keep pushing forward in the face of failure. You can either give up or look for work around. Obviously for astronauts Mark Watney, giving up means dying. But we generally don`t want to give up on our projects, either even if it`s not life-or-death. 14
  • 23. Managing Social Responsibility: Annie Montrose the director of media relations for NASA. She was primarily concerned about public perception of NASA during the Watney rescue. At the middle of the movie she forced director Teddy to communicate with media and tell them that Mark is alive. Team work: Team work is a vital point of organization success. The Ares||| crew members could rescue Mark Watney from Mars because of team orientation. They had a suitable communication between all of the crew members. That’s why they succeed to their mission. Optional plan: Optional plan can make the mission easy during a lot of problems. In the movie if the crew members were not agreed to journey total 900 day in space. They had no other plan as an optional plan to rescue Mark. So he had to live for 4 years in Mars. But at the middle of the movie rich Purnell made the optional plan to rescue Mark. Decision Making : In the movie there was a delay of decision making .At the very beginning ,Henderson wanted to tell the other crew members about the existence of Watney on Mars .But Teddy and Vincent Kapoor influenced him that he did not tell them. If they told them before ,Watney may secure earlier with the assistance of Rich Purnell. Innovation : Rich Purnell had a innovative idea in the movie . By his idea NASA could save Mark Watney in a few days . But NASA demotivate Rich`s idea during the movie. At the end of the movie they could rescue Watney only because of Rich`s idea. Omnipotent View of Management : Omnipotent view means that managers directly responsible for an organization`s success or failure . In the movie Teddy had omnipotent view. His decision was responsible for NASA and Ares ||| mission`s success or failure. 15
  • 24. Monitoring and Controlling : In the movie NASA monitored and controlled the Ares ||| mission from earth . They made the plan and directed the Ares ||| crew members to accomplish the mission . They had the full control to abort the mission also. They observed the situations and took fair decision to rescue Mar Watney. Leadership & Responsibility : A perfect leader can make the mission easy and successful. But in the movie there was lack of leadership skill. Commander Lewis while taking decisions lot of delay and wrong decision was seen in the movie . She ordered Alex Vogel to make a bomb where as a reactor specialist was Johansson. In this case she chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb. In the movie we can see that Teddy Sanders the executive director of NASA had some responsibility problem. He didn`t give any decision to search for finding the dead body of Mark. He said to the world that Mark was dead . So in the movie there was lack of responsibility . Stakeholders are Your Hidden Strength : After the failure of first supply probe mission, things look very bleak for Mark . But thanks to the positive relationship between NASA and the Chinese National space Administration , the opportunity emerges for another shot at it. We might feel that a given stakeholder has low influence or interest in our project this should never be on invitation to ignore them. You never know when their support might be the last piece of puzzle required for your project success . Freedom: In NASA every employee has freedom to accomplish their goal. Like Rich Purnell who had too much freedom to make a rescue plan for mark. When the movie introduced Rich Purnell we saw that he was drinking too much coffee and funniest conversation between him and Vincent that prove his freedom of work. 16
  • 26. Lessons From The Movie “THE MARTIAN” 1.Keep Working No Matter What: In life we tend to sit down and feel sorry for ourselves when we’re hit by a situation. Keep busy, keep our mind distracted, and keep moving slowly towards where we want to be. Do the most menial tasks if we have to, or exercise intensely to remove our mind from our problems. Once we’ve stopped endlessly thinking about the issue, we’ll find it’s a lot easier to start seeing positive solutions and hope in the situation. 2.One Step At a Time: If the challenge is too big to solve in one go then just solve the immediate problem in front of us and then the next one and then the next. One step at a time, we just keep going. We cannot try to do more than we can do, or we will end up doing nothing. At the end of the movie, Wattney gives a class and says something along the lines of: ‘You just keep solving one problem and then the next and then the next. Eventually if you get to solve enough problems you can come home. 3.Make A Short Term Plan: Mark knew that the next mission to Mars, Mars 4, would arrive in about four years. he didn’t know how he could survive four years, he made a plan to fix the radio, so that he could attempt to communicate with earth. Mark didn’t have answers to everything, and he only had imperfect answers to what he did know, but he went ahead with a plan and a purpose. He took action, doing the best that he could for the moment, and figured he would solve the other problems as he went along. 4. Focus On The Moment: When Mark discovered that he had been left for dead on Mars, he knew he was desperately out of luck. But he didn’t want to die on the surface, so he made his way into the Hub. Even the knowledge that the situation was hopeless didn’t stop Mark from taking the immediate actions necessary to ensure his short term survival. “The power for creating a better future is contained in the present moment: You create a good future by creating a good present.” – Eckhart Tolle 18
  • 27. 5. Keep Records: Clutter, being unorganized, and not having accurate records causes frustration. Being able to find what we need, when we need it is encouraging. We get the momentum we need to take more action. Also, others are encouraged because when we ask for something and we have it readily available, they know they can trust and depend on us. 6.Journal: Use your journal to write out our story. We should record our history for our self and for others who will follow in our footsteps. Journaling help us to grow and to get a great lesson out of our day. What can we get out of our day? What did we grow from and who were we a blessing to? 7.Sometimes We really Do Know The better: When we’re on the ground in a situation, we can see better than those outside the situation what is going on. We actually in a better position to make judgment calls. Likewise, all tests of faith involve an element of intuition, and we are learning to trust and listen to our intuition in these trials – often because we turn to God/the Universe and listen when we have no other option left. Trust what our gut is saying to us. Listen to what others have to say, but make the best decision for us in that moment. No one will ever be able to see as well as we what we need. 8. Team Work: There is nothing like a strong team. A strong team that offsets each others strengths and weaknesses. A team that is willing to fight for one another. The best teams are great even when we are across the miles. 9.Don’t Give Up: “Never give up, and be confident in what you do. There may be tough times, but the difficulties which you face will make you more determined to achieve your objectives and to win against all the odds.” – Marta Mark Watney may be a fictional character, but the lessons we learned can be put to good use in the real world. When we find yourself stalled when working toward a vision or goal, think to our self, “How can I be like Mark?” 19
  • 28. 10.There’s Always a way: No matter what happens in our situation or our life there is always a way. It may not always be the way we see it happening or how we expect it to play out, but it will be resolved. We must not lose faith or give up. Sometimes our way out may seem completely ridiculous or we may not even think it will work, but it is a chance. And sometimes a chance is all we need! 20
  • 30. Solve Of The Movie 1.Need to Right Shell Selection Of Taking Battery: Mark Watney needed to recharge the battery of Pathfinder. For recharging the battery he took the power system from the virus detect shell which causes the virus detect shell manifested and blew up the hub. In the movie they did not explain the real usage of the RTG. The RTG produces 1500 watts of heat and 100 watts of power. The 100 watts of power also reduces recharge the battery of Pathfinder. 2.Need to More Careful About Health Issue: In the rover Watney solved his temperature problem by radioactive thermal generator inside his room. Watney would die of cancer due to excessive cosmic radiation . Mark should creates a heat reservoir by submerging the RTG in a container of water. This warms the water up. Mark can now bubble the cold sub- freezing air through the warm water to raise its temperature. The RTG produces 1,400 Watts of heat, giving Mark the energy he needs to survive his long trip. 3.Need Not to Take Any Risky Process of Making Water: Matt Damon’s character took hydrazine from the rocket fuel and dissociated it into nitrogen and hydrogen and he burned the hydrogen with oxygen to make water. If I was stranded on Mars I would just make water out of the soil. Water is available in its natural state on Mars as ice, permafrost, or soaked into the soil. Martian soil is about 5% water by weight at low latitude, and up to 60% water near the poles. 4.Need To Have a Optional Plan: If the crew member were not agreed to journey total 900 days in space, they had no other plan. They had just long run plans that ARES-4 would bring him after 4 year. NASA can't just send a resupply mission right away to give Watney needed the food, water, air and other basic supplies he desperately needs for survival. They Should try again. The planets have to line up just right to send a spacecraft from Earth to Mars using the standard route, called a Hofmann transfer. But That alignment only happens once every 26 months. They Should plan for this. The increased time is due to two factors- waiting for a desired planetary alignment and the required flight time itself. So, Watney needs to wait well over a year for any supplies to arrive. 22
  • 31. 5.Need To Liaison: When the 1st mission of resupply to Watney failed, CNSI wanted to help them and discussed themselves but NASA did not tell them to help. Before helping one of the executive of this institutions told other that NASA would not give us the credit in front of the world. But at last they helped. It’s a huge lack of liaison. Here It was a life of a man who was outside the world into mars. But NASA did not ask any help for anyone. If CNSI didn’t help may be the result would not be the same. 6.Need to Fast in Decision Making Process: Henderson was influenced by Teddy and Vincent Kapoor so that at 54 sols he did not tell them. If they tell them before, Watney may secure earlier with the assistance of Martinez’s friend Rich Parnell. By using his plan at last NASA could secure Watney. Henderson should tell about this early when he saw Watney. Teddy and Vencent have already decided not to tell the Ares 3 crew that Watney is alive. But finally the crew member were agreed to journey total 900 days in space and back Watney. 7. Need to Motivate Rich Purnell: In the movie Rich Purnell came up with a plan reducing time for Hermes to go to mars. By his idea of rescue mission make easier to rescue mark. But he didn’t get motivated by director of NASA. If he got motivated and he will do more innovated work in future. 8.Improve Team Management: As Lewis told Johansson to cut off Watney’s communication, so that he could not give his feedback while the storm turned dangerous. If they improved their team management they didn’t have this problem and Watney could communicate while storm turned dangerous. 9.Need More Leadership Skills: Commander Lewis should make the mission easy and successful. In this case she chooses the less appropriate person to make a bomb. So she needs more leadership skills to make this mission successful. 23
  • 32. 10.Need to be More Responsible: Teddy Sanders should take responsibility to find Watney’s death body and then declare about his death. But he didn’t find out that. So he should more responsible about his mission. 11.Clear Concept About Time Calculation: In this movie there need clear concept about time calculation so that audience will understand the movie’s time perception. 12.Strong Mentality And Positive View About Every Situation: Every leader should have strong mentality and positive view about every .As a leader she should not look depressed about this incident. 13. Need Inspection of First Supply And Rescue Mission: We have seen in the movie that they didn’t inspect the space rocket because they wanted to start rescue mission fast and for this reason the can reduce the time. But I believe that if they inspect the rocket it would be more smoothly to rescue mark. 14. Need of Proper Planning And Execution to Rescue: We see in the movie that proper planning and execution was needed to rescue mark properly. Because planning is the most important part of doing work correctly. But we see that lacking of food, supplies and equipment are not sufficient. So from my point of view is that Watney’s rescue plan should have executed properly that how much reassures he has to live and how will the rocket carry him to earth. 24
  • 34. “The Martian” – a review There are many things to like about Ridley Scott’s movie “The Martian”, starring Matt Damon in the central role as Mark Watney, an American astronaut stranded on Mars. The movie is long - 2 hours and 22 minutes - but it keeps you engaged and entertained right through; it is science fiction, but not the kind that tries to impress you with excessive special effects; it is a movie that you can truly enjoy with your family, without worrying about “explicit content”; and it celebrates the calm, fight –to-the-finish spirit of a human being facing certain death. The timing of this movie release is also terrific – with the recent revival of interest in Mars due to successful American and Indian missions, evidence of water on the planet, talk of manned explorations, and so on. The story line is simple enough. A huge storm on the Martian surface forces the Ares III mission commander (played well by Jessica Chastain) to take the decision to blast off on an emergency basis, without astronaut Mark Watney. All communication with him has been lost, and he is presumed dead in the storm. In any case, there is no time to go and look for him. Half buried by the storm, Mark (Matt Damon) wakes up and realizes that he is all alone on Mars, with very limited food and water, and no way of communicating with his fellow astronauts or mission control back home. Does he survive? Can he be rescued, when the next mission is four years away? How does the Ares III crew (especially the commander) handle the guilt of having left him behind? What should NASA do? What can Matt do, except lie down and accept the inevitable? The answers to these questions form the crux of the movie. As the astronaut, Matt Damon does a great job, playing the role of the never- say-die hero with the right combination of finesse, self-deprecating humor, and a light touch. Here is a guy staring at sure death, and he just buckles down to “solving one problem at a time”, without striking heroic poses or collapsing in despair. Watney – a biologist - also figures out how he can set up a potato farm using his own waste (for want of a better word), and a contraption to produce water from hydrogen and oxygen. Early in the movie, reflecting on the challenges ahead, Mark Watney says, “I’m going to have to science the shit out of this”. That’s a pretty funny line, and it sums up his philosophy quite well. At the same time, his fears and anxieties also get portrayed with subtlety and realism. Matt’s role is not an easy role, given that he is the only character on the screen for extended periods of time. How should he communicate what he is thinking, his fears and anxieties, and what he plans to do? Ridley Scott, the director, solves this problem by having Damon start a video log in which he regularly records his thoughts, plans and actions. This actually works well, and you end up quite liking the character. 26
  • 35. Mark start a video log in which he regularly records his thoughts, plans and actions It is evident that the director has had expert help (including from NASA) in getting the science and technology parts mostly right – with very few liberties taken for the sake of the storyline or drama. NASA is shown in reasonably good light, with their scientists even reaching out to their counterparts in China for help. Quite a few scenes feature conference calls through large video screens, and you can see the Cisco logo on the screens clearly. A nice marketing coup, I must say. The photography is excellent, and the special effects and background score are never intrusive. So, should you go and see this movie? Yes, you should. You come out feeling good – and that’s not something you can say about a lot of movies these days. Take your family along – the theme is “universal”, in every sense of the word. 27
