Microsoft: A Waking Giant in Healthcare Analytics and Big DataDale Sanders
Ten years ago, critics didn’t believe that Microsoft could scale in the second generation of relational data warehouses, but they did. More recently, many of these same pundits have criticized Microsoft for missing the technology wave du jour in cloud offerings, mobile technology, and big data. But, once again, Microsoft has been quietly reengineering its culture and products, and as a result, they now offer the best value and most visionary platform for cloud services, big data, and analytics in healthcare.
Microsoft: A Waking Giant In Healthcare Analytics and Big DataHealth Catalyst
In 2005, Northwestern Memorial Healthcare embarked upon a strategic Enterprise Data Warehousing (EDW) initiative with the Microsoft technology platform as the foundation. Dale Sanders was CIO at Northwestern and led the development of Northwestern’s Microsoft-based EDW. At that time, Microsoft as an EDW platform was not en vogue and there were many who doubted the success of the Northwestern project. While other organizations were spending millions of dollars and years developing EDW’s and analytics on other platforms, Northwestern achieved great and rapid value at a fraction of the cost of the more typical technology platforms. Now, there are more healthcare data warehouses built around Microsoft products than any other vendor. The risky bet on Microsoft in 2005 paid off.

In this context, Dale will talk about:
His up and down journey with Microsoft as an Air Force and healthcare CIO, and why he is now more bullish on Microsoft like never before
A quick review of the Healthcare Analytics Adoption Model and Closed Loop Analytics in healthcare, and how Microsoft products relate to both
The rise of highly specialized, cloud-based analytic services and their value to healthcare organizations’ analytics strategies
Microsoft’s transformation from a closed-system, desktop PC company to an open-system consumer and business infrastructure company
The current transition period of enterprise data warehouses between the decline of relational databases and the rise of non-relational databases, and the new Microsoft products, notably Azure and the Analytic Platform System (APS), that bridge the transition of skills and technology while still integrating with core products like Office, Active Directory, and System Center
Microsoft’s strategy with its PowerX product line, and geospatial analysis and machine learning visualization tools

Webinar On Lean In Non Manufacturing Environmentsfertuckda
The set of "lean" methods and tools, based on the Toyota Production System, now so widely applied in manufacturing organizations throughout the world, can also be adapted to non-manufacturing environments. Service, health care, construction, back office, sales, and financial organizations have all successfully used lean methods to streamline their repetitive processes by focusing them on the customer and by systematically eliminating waste.
You will learn how to stabilize, standardize, and simplify any set of processes using the power of the Toyota Production System. The presentation will cover: the importance of leadership and team-building to implementing change effectively; defining real value; the categories of waste and how to recognize them; defining work flow to uncover waste; standardizing work; and implementing continuous improvement. You will learn about the major lean techniques and tools such as: 5S, Kaizen events, Standard Work, just-in-time, Value Stream Mapping, and waste audits. You will also learn how to use these methods in concert to "lean up" organizational and cross-functional processes.
By the end of this presentation, you will be able to recognize whether the application of these methods could be of benefit to your organization. Challenge yourself to take a fresh look at how you are doing your work.
Data-Ed: Unlock Business Value through Data Quality Engineering Data Blueprint
Organizations must realize what it means to utilize data quality management in support of business strategy. This webinar focuses on obtaining business value from data quality initiatives. I will illustrate how organizations with chronic business challenges often can trace the root of the problem to poor data quality. Showing how data quality should be engineered provides a useful framework in which to develop an effective approach. This in turn allows organizations to more quickly identify business problems as well as data problems caused by structural issues versus practice-oriented defects and prevent these from re-occurring.

Most Common Data Governance Challenges in the Digital EconomyRobyn Bollhorst
Todays’ increasing emphasis on differentiation in the digital economy further complicates the data governance challenge. Learn about today’s common challenges and about the new adaptations that are required to support the digital era. Avoid the pitfalls and follow along on Johnson & Johnson’s journey to:
- Establish and scale a best in class enterprise data governance program

Most organisations think that they have poor data quality, but don’t know how to measure it or what to do about it. Teams of data scientists, analysts, and ETL developers are either blindly taking a “garbage in -> garbage out” approach, or worse still, “cleansing” data to fit their limited perspectives. DataOps is a systematic approach to measuring data and for planning mitigations for bad data.
Keeping the Pulse of Your Data: Why You Need Data Observability to Improve D...Precisely

Sabre is a technology solutions provider to the global travel and tourism industry, encompassing four business units: Sabre Airlines Solutions, Sabre Travel Network, Sabre Hospitality Solutions and Travelocity. Sabre provides software to travel agencies, corporations, travelers, airlines, hotels, rental car, rail, cruise and tour operator companies. Divisions within each of these groups also service the business or corporate travel market. Sabre grew out of American Airlines and was spun off with an IPO in 2000 and currently employs approximately 10,000 people in 60 countries. In addition to managing the business processes and reporting across the four divisions, the IT group has been tasked to provide an agile architecture to accommodate M&A opportunities in the hospitality industry. Clearly, one of the biggest opportunities for leverage of corporate information assets is travel-related “public” and “private” reference data. Critical to the launch of such a program is to answer the key question “Why after all this time do we need RDM?” This session will provide insights and best practices concerning the establishment of an enterprise RDM program in a large global enterprise by discussing topics such as:
– Establishing the business value of an enterprise RDM program (“Hello, Houston … we have a problem”)
– Overcoming the cultural & territorial obstacles by selling change as a compelling argument for RDM (“Shift Happens”)
– Futureproofing the enterprise RDM program solution, outcome & direction (“What we didn’t think about”)
Data Profiling: The First Step to Big Data QualityPrecisely
Big data offers the promise of a data-driven business model generating new revenue and competitive advantage fueled by new business insights, AI, and machine learning. Yet without high quality data that provides trust, confidence, and understanding, business leaders continue to rely on gut instinct to drive business decisions.
The critical foundation and first step to deliver high quality data in support of a data-driven view that truly leverages the value of big data is data profiling - a proven capability to analyze the actual data content and help you understand what's really there.
View this webinar on-demand to learn five core concepts to effectively apply data profiling to your big data, assess and communicate the quality issues, and take the first step to big data quality and a data-driven business.
Optimize Your Healthcare Data Quality Investment: Three Ways to Accelerate Ti...Health Catalyst
Healthcare organizations increasingly rely on data to inform strategic decisions. This growing dependence makes ensuring data across the organization is fit for purpose more critical than ever. Decision-making challenges associated with pandemic-driven urgency, variety of data, and lack of resources have further highlighted the critical importance of healthcare data quality and prompted more focus and investment. However, many data quality initiatives are too narrow in focus and reactive in nature or take longer than expected to demonstrate value. This leaves organizations unprepared for future events, like COVID-19, that require a rapid enterprise-wide analytic response.
What are some actionable ways you can help your organization guard against the data quality challenges uncovered this past year and better prepare to respond in the future? Join Taylor Larsen, Director of Data Quality for Health Catalyst, to learn more.
What You’ll Learn
- How data profiling and data quality assessments, in combination with your data catalog, can increase data quality transparency, expedite root cause analysis, and close data quality monitoring gaps.
- How to leverage AI to reduce data quality monitoring configuration and maintenance time and improve accuracy.
- How defining data quality based on its measurable utility (i.e., data represents information that supports better decisions) can provide a scalable way to ensure data are fit for purpose and avoid cost outstripping return.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

M Capital Group (“MCG”) expects to see demand and the changing evolution of supply, facilitated through institutional investment rotation out of offices and into work from home (“WFH”), while the ever-expanding need for data storage as global internet usage expands, with experts predicting 5.3 billion users by 2023. These market factors will be underpinned by technological changes, such as progressing cloud services and edge sites, allowing the industry to see strong expected annual growth of 13% over the next 4 years.
Whilst competitive headwinds remain, represented through the recent second bankruptcy filing of Sungard, which blames “COVID-19 and other macroeconomic trends including delayed customer spending decisions, insourcing and reductions in IT spending, energy inflation and reduction in demand for certain services”, the industry has seen key adjustments, where MCG believes that engineering cost management and technological innovation will be paramount to success.
MCG reports that the more favorable market conditions expected over the next few years, helped by the winding down of pandemic restrictions and a hybrid working environment will be driving market momentum forward. The continuous injection of capital by alternative investment firms, as well as the growing infrastructural investment from cloud service providers and social media companies, whose revenues are expected to grow over 3.6x larger by value in 2026, will likely help propel center provision and innovation. These factors paint a promising picture for the industry players that offset rising input costs and adapt to new technologies.
According to M Capital Group: “Specifically, the long-term cost-saving opportunities available from the rise of remote managing will likely aid value growth for the industry. Through margin optimization and further availability of capital for reinvestment, strong players will maintain their competitive foothold, while weaker players exit the market to balance supply and demand.”
Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.
